Why Is The Canadian Dollar Not Strengthening
2008-04-18 10:42:00 I devote a lot of attention to inter-market analysis in the Forex Point and Figure System (FxPnF). In fact, I dedicate an entire chapter in the book to the discipline of inter-market analysis.Inter-market analysis is essentially looking at one market in an attempt to gain an edge in another market. The forex market is the most applicable market in which to conduct inter-market analysis because of the nature of pairs trading and the nature of fiat currencies.A classic example of inter-market analysis is to buy the currencies of countries who export crude oil when oil prices rise. According to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the top exporters of crude oil are: Saudi Arabia,European Union, Russia, Norway, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Canada, Mexico. The Saudi riyal is a fixed exchanged rate, pegged to the U.S. dollar at 3.75 riyals. The European Union imports much more oil than it exports, so the euro isn't a good currency to trade based on oil prices. The Russian ruble isn't li...

Forex - Canadian dollar strengthens vs US dollar after strong employment da
2008-02-08 14:48:00 LONDON (Thomson Financial) - The Canadian dollar strengthened against the US dollar following a strong set of employment data, which dampened hopes for a large interest rate cut at the Bank of Canada's next meeting in March. Statistics Canada said jobs rose by 46,000 in January, boosting the employment rate to a record high of 63.8 pct. This brought the unemployment rate down to 5.8 pct from 5.9 pct in December, confounding Thomson IFR Markets' consensus expectation for a rise to 6.0 pct. "The probability of the BoC doing a 50 basis point cut has dropped significantly," said James Vola at Thomson IFR Markets. "The economy has had another monster print for employment and wages are rising, and the BoC does not seem likely to add to much fuel to the economy's fire." At 12.49 pm, the US dollar had weakened to 1.0018 cad, from 1.0074 cad prior to the data.

Canada Prepared For U.S. Recession
2008-01-11 05:00:00 Tonight I came across an article in the National Post (Canada) entitled ?Riding Out Global Gloom,? which claims that Canada is well-positioned to withstand a U.S. recession. Market Watch: Canadian Dollar - October 2007
2007-10-25 20:37:00 Is the high-flying loonie going to punish the Canadian Economy?Six months ago I wrote an article warning the loonie (called this because of the bird on Canada’s one-dollar coin) was undervalued, oversold and due for a reversal in fortune. At the time the US dollar was worth 1.1850 against the Canadian dollar, with the euro valued at 1.56 Canadian. The Canadian economy was beginning to pick up following 6 months of lacklustre growth to the end of last year. Oil prices were rallying to over $60 having come off a low of $50 a barrel earlier in the year. Consumption was on the up, exports were growing steadily, employment was rising faster than forecast, business confidence was improving and there were some early signs that inflation was beginning to tick upwards. Against this backdrop of evidence it was a mystery why the currency was rejected, but that soon changed when economic report after report demanded the world take notice. Before we had time to blink the loonie had appreciated...

Strong Canadian dollar could prompt deep price cuts
2007-09-22 04:03:00 Strong Canadian dollar could prompt deep price cuts If you live in Canada, you're probably already aware the Canadian dollar matched the U.S. dollar for the first time since 1976 yesterday. Canada's currency has been inching toward par all year, finally coming in line with the greenback on Thursday. Unfortunately for Canadians, car prices have not kept up with trend. But that may be about to change. Back when it took $1.50 in Canada to match one U.S. dollar, Canada's higher car prices were perfectly logical. A car the sold for $50,000 in America would sticker for $75,000 at a Canadain dealership. Those days are long gone, but car prices remain high. Take the Porsche Cayman S, for example. If a car shopper in Canada heads to his or her nearest Porsche dealership this weekend, they will have to shell out nearly $85,000 for the mid-engine coupe — a whopping $26,000 more than the U.S. MSRP of $59.000. Similarly, a BMW M5 retails for $83,000 in America and $113...
Strong Canadian dollar makes for good shopping online
2007-09-22 01:54:00 Holy crap, the Canadian dollar is on par with the U.S. dollar! The last time this happened was in the year of 1976. It's not good news for the manufacturers and exporters, but for us shoppers, it's great news! All my friends are crossing the border to the U.S. this weekend for some serious shoppage. I wish I could go too! But we're signing the deal with the builder to purchase our new house (yay!) this Saturday, so I'm going to take advantage of the strong dollar on eBay! Canadian Dollar Over 99 Cents
2007-09-19 13:56:00 Well, it is almost here and quicker than I expected. This morning, the Canadian dollar is trading over 99 cents to the American dollar. The Globe and Mail have an article on the Loonie today. It also strengthened against the euro, so it isn't just the U.S. currency falling this time. Canada will have definitely lost the cheapness it has with its imports, both products and services. It will definitely bode well for travelers and those monopoly products we have, but who knows what will happen for the other sectors over time. They will have felt it for the past few years leading up to this anyways. Published on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 04:56:07 MST. - 0 Comments

Canadian Dollar Hits New 30 Year High - 96.93
2007-09-13 13:00:00 The Canadian dollar reached a new 30 year high yesterday. At one point it was trading at 96.63 cents to the American dollar. That is a far cry from the 62 cents we were trading at in November of 2001. The difference in the past 6 years has been astounding. I know it has been nice when I convert my money over, but I can't even imagine the impact it must have on trading goods and services. I was working for a company located in Canada that was owned by a major company in the U.S. in 2001 and that was a big plus for us being up here. We were cheaper employees, not because of our skill level, but because our salaries and expenditures were in Canadian dollars. I don't know if it is positive or negative, but it is definitely interesting times. If we do hit $1 (which it looks like we are going to), it will be something never seen by an entire generation of Canadians (including myself). It was only part of stories that our parents told when we were younger about their younger year...
