Peter Kinch on Canadian Mortgage Rates
2009-10-12 00:34:00
If you're riding the variable rate it can be scary sometimes, it can even keep you up at night. With interest rates at historical lows people are starting to wonder when and how high rates will go. Peter Kinch, The Number 1 Mortgage Broker in Canada, has insight on what to expect in the short term and in the next 2 to 4 years. He points out that interest rates are at their lowest ever which is attracting buyers to the market in turn firming up prices. Housing affordability is very good right now so take advantage while you can.He also expects rates to go up 3% in the next 2 to 4 years.Watch the full interview here on CTV News.Small piece of trivia Mr. Kinch lived in the same city I do in Japan and we have mutual acquaintances - Six degrees of separation!
Yeah for Canadian Real Estate!
2009-10-08 03:58:00
Canadian real estate is on the road to recovery."On balance, given the recent unbelievable strength in the Canadian housing market, the modest downshift in sales in August should not be seen as anything other than a brief respite in what has been a remarkable recovery in the sector," said TD Securities economics strategist Millan Mulraine."Even so, we believe that Canadian housing market activity in the coming months will be relatively tepid as the sector consolidates the gains made since January." Chicago lawyer named Canadian ambassador
2009-09-23 23:55:00
Among the best jobs in the world has to be that of U.S. Ambassador to Canada. It's not far from home. They speak the language (for the most part). There's hardly any chance of a nasty diplomatic feud, much less a war. So lots of Chicagoans are happy for their friend David Jacobson, who's been confirmed as ambassador to America's biggest trade partner. Shia Kapos has the dish on her blog....
Canadian Bank Accounts for Kids
2009-09-09 12:30:00
A few years ago we took the kids down to our local RBC and signed them up for a Leo Account. I did some online research to find out which Canadian bank offered the best bank accounts for kids. They were all so similar that no single bank was a clear winner. The only incentive at the time was with Royal Bank who offered a bank tour which ended in the vault. There each child would find 5 loonies in a safety deposit box to start out their accounts. I was really impressed with the level of service we received. The kids were treated like VIPs through the whole process and they came out feeling valued and excited to start their financial journey. When I began doing the research for this post, I was disappointed to find Royal Bank had discontinued this incentive. I even called them directly to confirm that they no longer offered it. If I were choosing again today, I would choose one of the banks that offered unlimited debits. Debit use isn’t a huge issue yet for my kids but I’ve...

ASE09 Meet Market Observations
2009-08-21 20:00:00
Guest Post by Dominic Fawver. During Affiliate Summit I visited both the Meet Market and the exposition hall to see the booths.  I was impressed at how good some of the booths and tables were, and also at how bad some were.  If I could recognize they were bad as a first time attendee, they must have stood out to veterans.  Here are some general comments based upon my experiences. Have a banner behind the table, giving your name and hopefully an idea of what you are (network, merchant, etc.) Have a give away: this is something that will make people remember you later.  It is even better if it ties in with your company name, slogan, or something of that nature.  It never hurts to be unique. Have people at the booth (I would have assumed that was obvious). Be friendly (again, obvious). Don’t have several people working the crowd and handing out stuff (I got asked if I wanted Perfect English at least 10 times) and no one at the table. If you have a giveaway or are doing a contest...

Canadian Military Training for ?Environmental Insurgency?

This pretty much tells you what our leaders of any country think of the environmental movement and how they’re going to deal with any direct action. The Canadian military is training for an environmental insurgency. An environmental insurgency is the scenario driving the majority of Canadian army training in Medicine Hat this week. Ostentatiously for “Afghanistan“, ...
Happy Easter for Canadian Rabbits
2009-04-13 05:40:00
Animal Liberation Front Frees Rabbits Destined for SlaughterSimulposted with NAALPOQuebec, Canada: In a communique received today by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, the Animal Liberation Front claims to have freed captive rabbits exploited for Christian rituals in Quebec, Canada. The brief communique reads:April 11, Bunnies in Quebec liberated from petting zoo. Their fate after Easter was unknown, to be sold to the highest bidder (farm to be slaughtered or testing lab) --ALF.Although not delineated in the communique, typical liberations of domesticated animals by the ALF also involve their placement in homes where they can live out their lives in comfort, unmolested and uneaten by humans.Thousands of rabbits and young chickens are rounded up every easter and peddled to children and their parents in a bizarre aberration of a religious festival that is purported to celebrate the murder of Jesus Christ, a largely fictional character in Christian theology. According to...
Canadian Patents - A Better Way?

A Newly Centrist Plea From A Wingnut Canadian MP
2009-03-23 23:14:00
The New York Times Book Review section today brought us the following in a critique of the latest from Leslie Gelb?Few Americans know the inner world of American foreign policy ? its feuds, follies and fashions ? as well as Leslie H. Gelb. He served Lyndon B. Johnson in the Pentagon and Jimmy Carter in the State Department. He was a foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times and president of the Council on Foreign Relations. ?Power Rules? builds on that lifetime of experience with power and is a witty and acerbic primer for moderate pragmatists. His chief targets are ideological dogmatism and imperialist hubris. America should be unafraid to exercise power, but it must be mindful that power?s reach usually exceeds its grasp. According to Mr. Gelb liberal Democrats should stop apologizing when they use American power, and conservative Republicans should stop believing that no problem can resist the application of American force. Both need to understand that power is wasted when ...

REAL Canadian Heros

Warrant Officer Brown Corporal Kenneth Chad O'Quinn, Warrant Officer Dennis Raymond Brown, Corporal Dany FortinIt is time to seriously give Pakistan notice that they are at war with the world. I am getting tired of lunatic Islamic terrorists based in Pakistan killing innocents in countries around the world be it the USA, England, Indonesia, India, Russia, Spain; be it sport teams, or children in a school like happened in Beslan or young people dancing in a night club like in Bali. When do we hold the country of Pakistan responsible for what eminates from Pakistan? How many Canadian heros do we need to see die before we go to war with Pakistan?. The reality is that Pakistan is the problem in Afghanistan and I am tired os seeing young brave Canadian lads lose their life because of some insane Muslim terrorist fighting to preserve nonsense. When does Pakistan get confrounted? It is a good job I'm not in charge of the Canadian army in Afganistan cause I'd go bomb and completely eradi...

Canadian Road Trip

Let?s say that you are taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Where would you go in each of these cities? The reason for this post is because I am taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. What a coincidence! I attended a wedding in Montreal almost 10 years ago, but don?t remember much about the city besides taking a river cruise and visiting the William Shatner Center at McGill University. I?ve never been to Ottawa, and figure that since I?m there, maybe I can be Prime Minister for the day. Toronto is one of my favorite places, and I plan on visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame on this trip since I?ve never been there before. I?m heading to these cities as part of my third annual hockey road trip and will be attending NHL games in each place. Besides the hockey games, I?m looking for suggestions of things to do. Therefore, please feel free to add any suggestions about things to do and see in the comments section be...
Canadian infrastructure: Bet on Bird
2009-01-06 06:00:00
"Like the US, Canada is looking to big infrastructure plans," says Roger Conrad (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2721). In The Canadian Edge (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2721), he looks to Bird Construction Income (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=birdf) (Other OTC: BIRDF (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=birdf)) as his top pick for 2009."The US isn't the only country about to pour billions into infrastructure; Canada is also making a big move. And Bird Construction will be a prime beneficiary of this infrastructure spending. "The stock trades on the Toronto stock exchange under the symbol BDT-UN (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=B-DT-UN.TO), as well as the US pink sheets under the symbol BIRDF (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=birdf)."Bird has been a dominant player in building design and construction services for more than 85 years. The biggest Canadian losers
2008-12-03 05:01:00
The three losers: Dion who didnt win , Jack Layton who couldn't outdo Dion and win the left wing vote and Duceppe who hasn't got anything to lose? Dion has likely been conned by Layton, being the weakling he is? I can remember Layton telling Dion to get out of the way in the televised debates and Layton won that point? The only way Dion can do it is by way of an underhanded back door illegitimate power grab being the loser he is. Layton and Duceppe have nothing to lose, so they think. Roll those dice gentlemen because you have been out maneouved again. It is with great concern that I find it necessary to write this. I truly hope that the left wing CBC will not simply endorse the left wing power grab by the Liberals with NDP and BLOC support simply because it is a Left wing power grab. It would be a government by scoundrels, socialists and separatists. This is as close to an armed revolution as I want to see in Canada and of course it is being carried out by the left wingers. It ta...

Exeter (XRA): Canadian mining gains
2008-10-23 06:00:00

If this happens, energy and commodities including precious metals could all move much higher. “Since deflation and inflation continue battling for dominance, the near term outcome is far from certain. But eventually inflationary forces will win because this is what the Federal Reserve is intent on achieving. “Meanwhile, we are recommending Exeter Resource, a Canadian exploration company. They are currently core drilling two gold/copper prospects in Chile, a mi...

Theo Tams, Tigana, and Canadian Idol
2008-09-11 07:06:00
My 10 year old daughter follows Canadian Idol closely, hoping to go for it herself when she is old enough; so when UofL student Theo Tam made the final two, Mary sent me to line up for tickets for the hometown viewing of the final show. The university lent its new gym for the purpose, and we showed up early enough to be among the first through the door. Tigana ran ahead to get good seats for Mary, Kasia and I even though it was 90 minutes before the show and the gym was not yet crowded. I was pleased with Tigana?s choice of the front seats in the second section, a good spot to see and be seen, and about the best we could have gotten without being the very first in line. But after about 20 minutes the producer came over to us and asked if we would move to the section signed as reserved for Tam friends and family. We were pleasantly, though not very, surprised: yet again, the ?cuteness factor? had worked in our favor, as the producers selected Kasia and Tigana to be front and center ...

Is Canadian Culture Important? Harper Says NO
2008-08-16 18:37:00
Apparently our PM Stephen Harper, who likely enjoys paint by numbers and took lessons as a child to learn how to play the radio, doesn't recognize the economic and other benefits of investing in the arts.I'll tell you what's wrong with cutting funding for Arts and Culture.According to a 2001-02 Statistics Canada report, with an investment of $6.8 billion from three levels of government, the arts and culture sector directly employed 740,000 people and generated $26 billion for the economy. The arts and culture sector employs as many people as the combined sectors of agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, oil, gas and utilities.Green Party: Harper's disrespectful attitude towards cultural expression will damage Canada's reputation "Slashing funds for cultural activities, both domestic and abroad, is damaging to the fabric of our country and further jeopardizes Canada's international reputation," said Ms. May. "This move appears to be more about extending the government's long t...
Provident Energy (PVX): A 'Canadian Edge'
2008-07-31 07:00:00
Roger Conrad (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2232) offers a specialized newsletter for sophisticated income investors; his Canadian Edge (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2232), focuses on high yielding investments north of the border.Bucking the market trend, he notes that the nine Canadian oil and gas producers in his portfolio have returned nearly 50% in the first half of 2008. Here, he looks at Provident Energy Trust (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=pvx) (NYSE: PVX (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=pvx))."The 24% year-to-date return from Provident Energy Trust actually more out of step with the torrid gains in other oil and gas sector trusts. The question: Are there real reasons to expect these trusts’ first half 2008 underperformance to continue or even get worse? "If so, we don’t want to keep owning them. If not, there’s every reason to expect they’ll outperform in the second half. Fortu...

Canadian Minor League Teams Seek Different Revenue Streams

Canadian Minor League Teams Seek Different Revenue Streams For minor league baseball franchises, Canada has become a different field of dreams.  With the exception of Vancouver, the old business model, where major league clubs supplied players - and more importantly, paid their salaries and travel expenses - has disappeared like Shoeless Joe into an Iowa cornfield.
Canadian Household Debt On the Rise
2008-07-17 16:02:00
The level of household debt has been steadily increasing for the last 20 years in Canada so it should be no surprise that it continued to rise again this quarter. The average Canadian household now has an average of 19.6 cents of debt for every dollar of networth and household debt is averaging about 123.8% of personal disposable income. This is a frightening figure at this stage of the financial cycle as it is much more likely that interest rates will be rising than decreasing. An increase in interest rates will of course make managing this debt much more difficult for many Canadian households. How does your household debt compare to your personal disposable income?
