Briere Leads Flyers Past Canadiens 3-2
2008-05-01 06:54:00
The Flyers once again blew a two goal lead, but Daniel Briere was the hero, as he scored the game winning goal. Briere has been awesome in the playoffs, and looks like he was the best free agent signing by far. The Flyers are not as talented and have been outplayed by Montreal, but they are coming ...
Flyers Beat Canadiens Despite Terrible Penalty
2008-04-29 20:59:00
The refs make an awful call on Darrien Hatcher. That was a normal hit by Hatcher, but because Boullion end up getting hurt, the refs decide to blow the whistle.  They refs kept the whistles in their pockets most of the game, but of course they decide to make that brutal call. Not only was this a ...

Montreal Canadiens: The pedal to the metal.
2008-04-22 10:43:00
The Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins disputed game seven of their first round series yesterday at the Bell centre in Montreal. The Canadiens played a solid game and this time they have kept the pedal to the metal as the game went on. As for the young rookie goaltender Carey Price, he has been absolutely perfect all game long.Mike Komisarek opened the score for Montreal during the first period when his shot from the blue line was deflected by a Boston player and past goaltender Tim Thomas.Halfway into the second period, Mark Streit doubled Montreal's lead on a great play as he went past Boston's defense and slipped the puck thru the goaltender. Andrei Kostitsyn increased Montreal's lead to 3-0 before the end of the seocnd frame.Andrei Kostitsyn scored his second goal of the game during the third period and his brother Sergei completed the score with only a few seconds left to the game.Final score: Montreal Canadiens 5 - Boston Bruins 0 (Montreal wins the series by 4-3)(Pic...

Montreal is a real hockey town I am more then happy… Habs are in the playoff. On top of that, they are the number one team in the east conference. Can you imagine that? Can you believe that? This is amazing. Will they win the Stanley cup this year? I do not know but they took ...

Montreal Canadiens: Eastern conference champions!
2008-04-07 11:30:00
The last match of the regular season has been played in the NHL and the Montreal Canadiens with 104 points clinched the Eastern conference championship. The last time the club has won the conference championship was in 1992.So for the first round of the playoffs, The Montreal Canadiens will face the Boston Bruins who finished 8th in the East. Montreal and Boston played each other eight times this season and Montreal has won all eight games. I expect that this trend will continue. I think the Habs have what it takes to take the Bruins out in five games.I will add more details about the 2008 NHL Playoffs, daily. I will also give my view on every first round series.

Sundin and the Canadiens, Kaberle, Smith, Thrashers, Canadiens, and Crosby
2008-03-18 00:29:00
Were the Canadiens close to picking up Mats Sundin on deadline day? How close were the Flyers from acquiring Tomas Kaberle? Is Jason Smith on course to become a Devil? Are the Thrashers trying to re-sign their their pending free agents? Will the Canadiens have an easier time in attracting free agents this summer? Would Penguins ever trade Sidney Crosby?
Canadiens Blank Isles 3-0
2008-03-16 20:30:00
The New York Islanders...the NHL's version of Groundhog's Day. If one were to compose a template for reporting on the remaining games on the schedule, it would read something like this: "The team worked hard....the kids gained experience....Rick Dipietro played well but had no offensive support....New York has no one who can put the puck in the net on a regular basis".

Will the Maple Leafs consider buying out Darcy Tucker? Did Erik Christensen want out of Pittsburgh? Should the Bruins re-sign Tim Thomas, Glen Metropolit? Were the Sharks intent on moving Patrick Marleau before the deadline? Did the Canadiens miss out on deals with the Blackhawks, Flames? Do the Capitals intend on re-signing Cristobal Huet? Why did the Blue Jackets trade Adam Foote, couldn't trade for Brad Richards? Which teams chased Tuomo Ruutu before he was dealt to the Hurricanes? Will Ryan Miller leave the Sabres after next season?

Montreal Canadiens turn heads in Northeast charge
2008-02-06 22:37:00
Memo to the Ottawa Senators: that bleu, blanc et rouge object in your rearview mirror is a hell of a lot closer than it once appeared.Just as the prohibitive favorite Sens are slipping off the rails, the Montreal Canadiens are making an unforeseen, spirited charge for the Northeast division crown and more than likely the top seed in the Eastern Conference. As surprising as it seems, I for one like their chances. With the two locking horns last night in La Belle Province, the Habs answered the bell by edging Ottawa to creep within one point of the Northeast's top perch. All things considered, this is still Ottawa's division to lose. Top to bottom, they are the most dominant team in the conference, at least on paper. But you know the old adage. The game isn't played on paper. With the Sens hobbled by key losses to captain Daniel Alfredsson and sniper Dany Heatley, the Canadiens have quietly crept up and are now within arm's reach of the defending Eastern champions.A few weeks ago, any ...

Would Canadiens take a run at Ovechkin?

Canadiens...is the city really hockey?
2007-11-08 22:32:00
An article published on the French version of Canoe has me a little troubled and perplexed at the moment. What it basically states is that the Canadiens, le Tricolore, les Glorieux, 24 time Stanley Cup Champs, whatever you wanna call them, are overrated when it comes to their popularity around Montreal and Quebec. The article specifically quotes like this:"If you think that the Canadiens are as important in Montrealers' eyes as the Red Sox are for Bostonians or the Yankees for New Yorkers, you are sadly mistaken..."It claims that, according to a study/survey done by Turnkey Sports and Entertainment, Montreal finishes a lowly 74th out of 122 sports cities in North America when it comes to exposure in their local area."Exposure" here meaning "being a fan" or "who really cares about the Habs", in short, the real "fans".The Habs media group has been using the phrase "The City is Hockey", "La Ville est Hockey" as the Habs slogan, and I gotta admit, it's quite appealing, appeasing and tha...
Fantasy Focus: Montreal Canadiens
2007-10-31 02:09:00
Quietly, almost imperceptibly, the Montreal Canadiens have kept themselves in the Eastern Conference thick of things.OK, outside of hockey-mad Quebec not many may have noticed the surging Canadiens. Inside La Belle Province, I'm sure hordes of pundits and fans are enraptured by the Habs' 6-2-2 record. This is as balanced a team as any, with all but three starters having at least one goal. Fantasy GMs will be happy to know rookies Mikhail Grabovski and Kyle Chipchura have blended well with savvy veterans Saku Koivu and Alex Kovalev. The big free-agent signee, Roman Hamrlik, won't cause Canadiens' fans to forget about Sheldon Souray. Still, his seven points and plus-3 rating make him a valuable addition as a depth defenseman.Defenseman Mathieu Dandenault has made an admirable transition to forward, chipping in with three goals. The power play has definitely been the Canadiens strength this year. Montreal has converted 17 of 56 opportunities to lead the NHL with a 30.4 per ...

There may be Price to pay for Canadiens (Blog)
2007-10-02 02:41:00
Ever-optimistic supporters of the Montreal Canadiens are about to get an up-close look at Carey Price - a year or two ahead of schedule. In a somewhat enigmatic decision, it looks like the Canadiens threw caution to the wind and decided, once the season gets underway this week, Price will be tending goal in Montreal, not Hamilton.Talk about rolling the dice with your future. Now, it goes without saying that Price will ride shotgun to incumbent Cristobal Huet for the bleu, blanc et rouge. He'll get in some action, but unless Huet drops the ball - a scenario that is not as far-fetched as you might think - Price will not be the go-to guy.Still, the Montreal brass is sitting on a powder keg.As sure as the kid is still popping pimples before a Friday night date, keeping Price with the big club comes with more cons than pros. There is no doubt Price will carry the goaltending fortunes of the Habs on his shoulders for many years to come. He is about as close to a sure-thing as you can ...

TSN.CA is reporting that the Canadiens have re-signed centre Tomas Plekanec for 2 more years. Not surprising in the least, as Plekanec is a huge part of the team and an incredibly versatile and useful forward. Glad to see him locked up for a few years but I would have preferred a longer deal.

2007-04-17 00:17:00
It has been reported in an Austrian news article, that Red Bull (yes, it give you wings! More like migraines for me.) is interested in buying the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. You can read the translated version thanks to our friends over at Google here. And the idiots say the Habs have won 23 Stanley Cups, sheesh.IT'S 24 YA DUMBELLS!Ahem, now the more pertinent question arises.Could this mean owner George Gillett has finally decided Liverpool and Tom Hicks will bring in more cash than the Habs? No way, the Habs are the biggest market in all of hockey and definitely up there in all of sports...The article cites there have already been meetings between Gillett and Red Bull.Dieter Mateschitz, the head of Red Bull, has said he would never re-brand a team that he buys...in this case, Formula One, and I for one think that he wouldn't make a bad owner at all, he seems passionate in what he does and I wouldn't mind the switcheroo. And besides, the way the Habs fell after December 23rd, y...
Leafs and Canadiens get a second chance at the cup
2007-04-16 21:27:00
David Martin of the Ottawa Citizen is reporting on a new NHL playoff format that sees the bottom 16 teams in the NHL playing for the Rabinovitch cup.The second tier playoff series is the brainchild of the CBC which has named it the Rabinovitch Cup after their president Robert Rabinovitch. The CBC is faced with a declining television audience with the absence of the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers from the Stanley Cup playoffs this year. They are predicting a 30% loss in viewership over the length of the playoffs. In a further brilliant move the Rabinovitch Cup sees the 9th seed teams in each conference go through to the second round automatically. This ensures that the Toronto Maple Leafs will make it to the second round and that at least one Canadian team will still be in the hunt for the new cup after the first series play themselves out.Even Don Cherry was reported as being supportive of this new cup and says "This is great. I love it. At least my Leafs ...

Samsonov regrets signing with Canadiens
2007-03-13 02:12:00
It's been a season of disappointments for the Montreal Canadiens, especially for Sergei Samsonov. The high-priced Russian forward, who was a healthy scratch for the sixth time on Saturday, pulled no punches this weekend saying he regretted signing with the team last summer."I've been blamed for everything that has gone wrong. Why stop now?" Samsonov told the Gazette."Obviously, looking back, I regret my decision (to sign with the Canadiens). All you can do is make things different and learn from your mistakes. Things could have been done and handled differently."After a 53-point season last year with Boston and Edmonton, Samsonov signed to a two-year, $7.05 million contract with the Canadiens in July. He is arguably the biggest free agent bust from last summer, scoring just nine goals and 26 points this season. Head coach Guy Carbonneau tried to light a spark under the former first-round pick like scratching him out of the lineup and shuffling him between all four lines. The Canadie...
HOCKEY SU GHIACCIO: CANADIENS VS. MAPLE LEAFS 5 A 4
2007-03-08 22:52:01
Wow!

2007-02-25 18:31:01
Tampa Bay Lightning GM Jay Feaster tells The Tampa Tribune that he is not finished exploring the trade market leading up to the February 27 trade deadline. Still on Feaster’s wish list is “some help” on the Lightning’s third and fourth lines. Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the New York Islanders are trying hard to acquire St. Louis Blues impending unrestricted free agent forward Bill Guerin. However, it appears that the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators Senators are currently the front runners. Gordon also reports that the Pittsburgh Penguins may deal young forwards Colby Armstrong and Ryan Malone for some veteran help. Another young player on the market appears to be Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook. The Blackhawks are shopping Seabrook in exchange for top-end forwards. According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun the Montreal Canadiens have held trade talks with the Blackhawks about forward Bryan Smolinski...

2007-02-21 00:24:02
According to Stan Fischler of MSG Network Nashville Predators forward Peter Forsberg will retire to the from the NHL at season end. Fischler also reports that out of the four unrestricted free agent defensemen the Montreal Canadiens currently have on their roster, Janne Niinimaa is “a sure goner.” An NHL source tells Matt Paulson of the East Valley Tribune that the Buffalo Sabres are having trade discussions with the Phoenix Coyotes in regards to forward Kevyn Adams. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the Florida Panthers are asking for “top-end prospects,” such as Jiri Hudler and Cory Perry, in return for forward Todd Bertuzzi. While no team is expected to deal those kind of assets for the still injured Bertuzzi, McKenzie suggests that a “soft” deal might take place, “something like a conditional draft pick deal where the pick would improve based on Bertuzzi’s performance, the team’s performance or if he re-signs with ...

2007-02-12 18:05:01
After trading defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski to the Nashville Predators for center Eric Belanger and picking up forward Denis Hamel off waivers from the Ottawa Senators, the Atlanta Thrashers still have some room under the salary cap to make more moves, reports Craig Custance of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I don’t know what players are going to be available at the deadline,” [Thrashers GM Don] Waddell said. “I think there are so few elite [players] that we were more concerned about making sure we helped our team as soon as we could.” Rumor has it that the Montreal Canadiens may send struggling forward Sergei Samsonov and defenseman Craig Rivet to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for center Shawn Horcoff, according to Pat Hickey of The Montreal Gazette. One problem: Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish and GM Kevin Lowe have said this week that they have no interest in bringing back Samsonov. Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times reports ...
