Support Breast Cancer Research
2008-05-02 19:09:00 Breast cancer is a family disease. I experienced this first hand when I lost my mother to breast and cervical cancer when I was 16 years old. Her death knocked me off my feet and in some ways I am still dealing with that loss today. Most of you know me as an actor on television, but I think the most important role I play is that of breast cancer activist. As we approach Mother's Day, I am reminded of the pain and the uncertainty of this disease and how the loss of our mother affected me and my sisters. I am also reminded of what a remarkable woman my mother was. I cannot think of a better way to honor her than by working toward a world without breast cancer. Legislation has been introduced in Congress for a Mother's Day commemorative coin. A portion of the proceeds from this coin will benefit breast cancer research. Will you join me in the fight against breast cancer by letting Congress know how important this issue is to you?In the United States, one woman will be diagnosed with br...

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation's Hottest Pink Party Ever 2008
2008-04-09 13:30:00 Gwyneth Paltrow is having a fantastic style week. For this event she wore vintage again. This time a pink Christian Dior Haute Couture by Marc Bowan classic from Decades Inc.She wore her sexy bustier strapless gown with a black satin sash, a large black clutch and sandals.Elizabeth Hurley has been channeling the sari look since her wedding to Indian businessman Arun Nayar. It is a look that she wears really well. I love that she is embracing the traditional female garment from India. I adore the ombre pink, and the shimmering embellishment. This is a huge departure from her Versace split to the thigh dresses, she always used to wear.I am a huge fan of Lanvin's Spring 2008 collection, and I am always excited to see how is is worn on the red carpet.Padma Lakshmi is wearing a white strapless Lanvin Spring 2008 gown, which was one of the highlights of the collection and has been seen in many editorials.I adore this fuschia dress worn by Evelyn Lauder, Senior VP at Esteé Lauder. 2008-04-09 12:03:00 Last night was all about the Glitz and Glam for actresses Elizabeth Hurley and Gwyneth Paltrow. The two were attended the hottest pink party at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. Since Liz married that Indian guy she has been rocking the Sari look. Our question is when will Liz return to the big screen. What can we say fierce, fierce fierce. Christian Siriano also came out for the Hottest Pink Party and for supporting breast cancer. Resident hot Chef who is rumoured to be dating Tracey Edmonds made a solo appearance at the event. They do make a hotttt couple if they are indeed dating. Tracey is such a talented and business savvy woman We are trying to figure out what made her try to waste her life with that Eddie Murphy. (photo via wireimage)

Is Cancer Research Being True to the Legacy of Terry Fox?
2008-04-01 06:56:00 Every year in September millions of Canadians pay special tribute to a very special young man named Terry Fox. Terry was the young Canadian who after having his leg amputated because of cancer decided he would run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. That run took place in the spring and summer of 1980 and was known as the "Marathon of Hope".After 142 days of running 26 miles a day (a marathon a day), and after 3339 miles, Terry was forced to end his run near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario on September 1, 1980. His cancer had returned, and this time it was in his lungs.Several months later while still just 22 years old Terry succumbed to cancer.Running for "Cancer Research"The initial objective of the Marathon of Hope was to raise roughly 25 millions dollars -- one dollar for every Canadian at that time. Terry's goal was actually met before he died, due to donations and pledges made during his run and during a telethon held shortly after he was forced to end his run....

How Breast Cancer Research Treatment Saves My Sister
2008-03-28 14:56:00 It seems that there are so many charitable causes that you cannot begin to give to all of them. My husband and I give to our church and the charities that it sponsors. That is the bulk of our cash donations. We also give to the food shelf and donate clothing and house hold items to the homeless and needy. It was not until my sister developed cancer that I thought about donating to medical research.Eighteen months ago my sister called me to let me know that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. This came as a huge surprise to both of us because there is no history in our family. She is an x-ray technician so she is very aware of the importance of getting mammograms and she has been getting one every year since she was forty years old. It was during her annual mammogram that the lump showed up on the test. The doctors told her all of her options and shared with her that they thought she would be a good candidate for a new treatment. There have been many advancements in breast can...

Environmental Focus in Breast Cancer Research
2007-10-10 19:04:00 This interview from Living on Earth with Dr. Devra Lee Davis helped me realize that the concern about environmental pollutants contributing to breast cancer is real, and we all need to take it into account. Dr. Davis is the author of The Secret History of the War on Cancer which argues that there has been a deliberate effort to suppress attempts to address cancer from the prevention angle, resulting in “10 million preventable cancer deaths over the past 30 years.” From the interview: […] CURWOOD: So, this report says what there are some 216 chemicals with carcinogenic properties that could be responsible for breast cancer. What sorts of chemicals are we talking about here? DAVIS: Well, let’s first establish this: every chemical that we know for sure causes cancer in humans has been shown to cause it in animals when experimentally tested. That’s a very important fact. Now the question is, is the obverse true? Namely, is every chemical we know that c...
