Ted Kennedy?s Cancer Treatment Under Socialized Medicine
2008-05-22 13:21:00
This article isn't written with disrespect to Ted Kennedy or his current situation, but to illustrate the difference between the system we have now, and the system he, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton advocate. It's true that not everyone has access to the same treatment Kennedy received, but that would not change under government run health care.
Improving Pregnancy Prospects After Cancer Treatment
2008-04-27 09:36:00
It has been reported for the first time in Germany that healthy ovarian tissue has been taken from a non-pregnant woman with cancer and then re-implanted after cancer therapy. The patient is now 32 years old and could become pregnant as a result. This case is described by Ralf Dittrich and his colleagues from Erlangen University Hospital in the current issue of Deutsches Arzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2008; 105[15]: 274-8). Anal carcinoma was diagnosed in this young patient in 2004 and chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy was recommended. As the ovaries lie near to the tumor, they are often damaged by therapy of this sort and the women become infertile. The Erlangen physicians succeeded in removing healthy ovarian tissue from the woman before treatment and to freeze it. The patient was then given the recommended cancer treatment. She tolerated this well and has not suffered any relapse. On the other hand, her menstrual periods had stopped, in spite of hormone treatme...

Bladder Cancer Treatment Options
2008-03-25 05:07:00
There are many different treatments available for people diagnosed with bladder cancer. Treatment depends mainly on the stage of cancer. A cancer caught early enough will require less dramatic measures than more advanced cancers. The most common treatment options are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. In certain cases, your doctor may combine two or more treatment options, most commonly combining surgery with chemotherapy or radiation therapy.Surgery may be performed with both early and advanced bladder cancers. When bladder cancer is caught early on, the tumor may be removed through the urinary opening, or urethra. This involves inserting small surgical instruments and a laparoscope through the urethra. The laparoscope is like a small telescope and is used to find the tumor and successfully remove it. This type of surgery is called a transurethral resection and rarely results in the patient requiring an external urine collecting method.Once bladder cancer h...

Nanotech applications in Cancer treatment - Today!
2008-03-03 21:06:00
Once again the modern technology available to us today that just simply wasn't 20 years ago...or 10...or heck 18 months ago is remarkable. Cancer researchers believe that further engineering the shape or surface properties of nanoparticles can enable the particles to actively target tumors, and thereby maximize their diagnostic or therapeutic function at the cancer site, while minimizing collateral damage to healthy tissue This is merely the beginning, for this early nanotech being tested is for better, more targeted deployment of current medicines. "We're not trying to re-invent every aspect of the science," said Seth Feuerstein, president of Carigent Therapeutics in New Haven, Conn. "We focus on delivering current drugs better, and we're also working with companies whose drugs haven't yet been approved, to help make them more effective." It may remain primarily a deployment mechanism, but even so this could be a harbinger of the end of chemotherapy.  I kno...

Androgen Deprivation Therapy For Prostate Cancer Treatment
2008-02-28 18:30:00
During the old days, practice of Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Treatment is what scares many men. Losing a part of your genitalia, for a man to lose ones faculty for sex is too much for a cure that's percentage driven. The former practice, this Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Treatment is Orchiectomy or the surgical castration -a term that hardly requires definition. The science for this is that testosterone stimulates prostate cancer growth. Testosterone is the male androgen hormone essential for a boy's development to manhood. It is responsible for many things characteristically man: baritone voice, deepening of chests, bulging of muscles, and growth of body hair among several things. And an enzyme that is secreted in the prostate gland converts this testosterone into a metabolite Dihydrotestosterone (abbreviated as DHT) which is a cancer stimulating cell. And because the testicles produce the majority of the testosterone, the Androgen Depriva...

Testicular Cancer - Treatment Options
2007-12-03 15:33:00
Stage I seminomas are usually treated with surgical removal of the testicle and spermatic cord (radical inguinal orchiectomy) followed by radiation aimed at regional lymph nodes (inguinal and retroperitoneal lymph nodes). Because seminoma cells are very sensitive to radiation, moderate doses can be used, usually around 10 to 15 treatments. More than 95% of stage I seminomas can be cured this way.The doctor may recommend radiation therapy even if CT scan results do not show that the cancer has spread to the nodes. This is because in approximately 20% of cases of testicular cancer of this type, cancerous cells have spread but were not detected during imaging studies. Radiation therapy is usually successful in destroying these hidden (occult) metastases.Another approach to treating men with stage I seminomas is currently being evaluated. Instead of treating regional lymph nodes with radiation right after surgery, patients are followed closely with blood tests and regularly scheduled im...
