Higher education and the GOP candidates: What do they have to say?
2012-01-30 14:20:00
One of the foremost topics in President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union speech was the need to make higher education more affordable and accessible, by keeping tuition costs down, increasing student aid and retaining immigrant students. “Higher education can’t be a luxury – it’s an economic imperative that every family in America should be... 2012 Candidates' Sun/Moon Personalities
2012-01-22 18:42:00
2012 Campaign: Butterfly v Utopian v Royalist v Moralistby Jude Cowell Now that our 2012 election year has arrived, why not compare and contrast the personality blends of the 2012 candidates: Obama, Gingrich, Romney, and Santorum? This may be quite easily accomplished by considering each of their Sun (adult; conscious mind) and Moon (child; the unconscious) combinations through their signs, elements, and modes.Rick Santorum's birth hour is unknown to me ('noon' is used), Gingrich's birth time seems to be somewhat in question ('born in middle of night'; 11:45 pm or 3:00 am are often used; June 17, 1943 Harrisburg, PA), Mitt Romney's is said to be correct (LDS maintain major genealogical records, as you know, so correct birth certificates must be especially prized, I would think; March 12, 1947 9:51 am est Detroit, MI), and Mr. Obama's hour, date, and place of birth seem to have been settled upon: August 4, 1961 Honolulu, Hawaii @ 7:24 pm AHST.)Yet because Mr. Santorum's Moon...

All current GOP candidates are flawed*
2011-12-16 00:57:00
Like many conservatives, I don’t yet have a candidate in the presidential race and still hope that an accomplished former governor of a large state may yet jump in the race. Although I appreciate Newt Gingrich’s rhetorical feistiness, having interned for the guy, I question his executive aptitude. Every time I come close to backing ...
Are only surging Republican candidates subject to scrutiny?
2011-11-17 00:57:00
If I had access to Lexis/Nexis, I would love to do a search for how the media covered Barack Obama four years ago as he began his surge in polls (of candidates running for the Democratic presidential nomination”. As he emerged as the leading “non-Hillary” candidate, did scrutiny of his record increase? When Michele Bachmann ...

Cubs trade candidates as buyers and sellers
2011-07-09 17:29:00
So now that we know that Jim Hendry won’t be dealing anybody he expects to be useful for next year’s team, we can run down the list of people who can be traded.   We can safely assume nobody will take Alfonso Soriano and his ridiculous contract unless the Cubs take a ridiculous one in return…Barry...
White Sox All-Star game candidates, and other fictional creatures
2011-06-28 08:51:00
The All-Star game is kind of silly. The fans vote for the starters, and that inevitably results in a great deal of the team being determined via popularity contest, and anyone who's been to high school knows that popularity is distributed with little rhyme nor reason. That's not good news for a team like the White Sox averaging under 24,000 fans per home game and not exactly drawing national attention for being 3 games under .500. I suppose people are gawking at Adam Dunn's 2011 like one would stop and stare if they saw a bus fall off a freeway ramp onto a Target.... but you don't vote that kind of thing into an All-Star Game.
Top Cubs GM Candidates IF Cubs don't retain Jim Hendry
2011-05-17 19:22:00
There's been some speculation about Jim Hendry's job security ever since the Cubs changed ownership.  None of this has actually been fueled by  the team's new owner Tom Ricketts who, if anything, has done his best to squelch such talk.  Nevertheless, the whispers continue that if the Cubs can't finish .500 or at least show some sort of progress by season's end, Hendry will be fired. The much-maligned Hendry has been blamed for every Cubs shortcoming -- this despite the fact that the Cubs have been more successful during his tenure than any GM in recent memory, including fan favorite Dallas Green.  Still, no fans need a scapegoat more than Cub fans, from billy goats to Bartman, we've turned blame into...
Social Media Allowing Recruiters To Find Candidates For Jobs
2011-05-03 06:10:00
It’s time you start polishing that Facebook profile of yours and start maintaining your Twitter profile — A new survey from the Society for Human Resource Management shows that 56 percent of employers refer to social networking sites to find the right person for the job. The report informs, “Social networking websites allow an employer the opportunity to gather initial information about a job candidate before a single word has been exchanged.” Social network here does not only limit to LinkedIn. Facebook and Twitter are equally important. The three key numbers that the report reveals are: 95 % of recruiters who use social networks look at LinkedIn to find candidates 58% source Facebook to find the right candidate 42 % hunt for candidates on Twitter While, recruiters are using social media, the employees are not lagging behind. A study by Ma Foi Randstad reveals that, 82% of Indian employees use social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to find...

Loyola coaching candidates
2011-03-15 18:05:00
Now that Loyola (IL) released Jim Whitesell the coaching search has officially begun. In the press release Dr. Grace Calhoun said:"The new coach will be fully immersed in and committed to the mission of Loyola. They will be a person of high integrity, experience, and will have either Midwestern roots or a proven track record of effectively recruiting the Chicago area. Loyola is making significant investments in athletics with the recent opening of the Norville Center for Intercollegiate Athletics and the planned renovations to the Gentile Arena. The new facilities, along with new leadership, are a winning combination for the Ramblers and our goal is to be both quick and thorough as we find the right coach to lead the...

What the mayoral candidates say about public transit
2011-02-21 14:00:00
When Chicago votes go to the polls Tuesday, for the first time in more than 20 years they won't say Richard Daley's name on the ballot. That fact makes this a very important election for the future of Chicago. And with funding for public transportation very much in question for 2012, it's important to know the candidate's positions on public transit.See my four posts with positions on public transportation issues:Carol Moseley BraunGery ChicoMiguel del ValleRahm EmanuelAdvance warning: I couldn't find anything from Chico on public transit. Dueling Interviews With Texas Senate Candidates Cruz and Williams
2011-02-18 19:51:00
-By Warner Todd Huston At CPAC this year, I interviewed two of the candidates for Kay Bailey Hutchison's soon to be vacated Senate seat in the great state of Texas. And with two such fine candidates as these you really do have to call it the great state of Texas! First up is former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz. His website can be found at www.tedcruz.org. Next up and in alphabetical order follows Mr. Michael Williams. Mr. Williams is currently a commissioner on the Texas Railroad Commission. His site can be found at www.williamsfortexas.com. Texas has an embarrassment of riches for senate candidates for sure....
How to bring balance to WTTW. The Chicago Mayoral Candidates' Forum: E
2011-02-15 10:38:00
The Chicago Public TV (WTTW) forum with the Chicago Mayoral candidates last night omitted any discussion of education, taxes and jobs. Does the lack of focus on the drivers of economic growth suggest a lack of ideological balance by the TV station? Does its treatment of the Tea Party issue reflect a similar liberal bias by the WTTW Chicago Tonight team. The Chicago Mayoral candidates do differ significantly on education reform, including on vouchers, charter schools, etc. They also differ on taxes and how and whether to modify tax rates. This post suggests how WTTW can remedy its lack of thought diversity.

Chicago's mayor candidates play 'Jenny from the block,' but
2011-01-11 20:14:00
All the candidates who hope to be Chicago's next mayor love to spend time telling us why they're better than the next guy. But lately, they've entered into a new competition--one that seems a little ridiculous at times--who's more "street" than the next guy.Today's Chicago Tribune chronicles the ways each candidate tries to claim they're the common man or woman. Miguel Del Valle is the son of West Side factory workers. Carol Moseley Braun is a struggling business woman from Chicago's South Side. Gery Chico has a few yarns about getting knocked off his bike by a runaway pig and working after school at a gas station. And Rahm Emmanuel? Well, he clings to the fact that he was born...
Meet the Candidates for Mayor of Chicago
2011-01-11 16:15:00
On Sunday, January 9th, the 48th Ward Democratic Party had an endorsement session featuring the four major candidates for mayor. The session included the four candidates speaking for roughly fifteen minutes followed by a fifteen minute question and answer session. It was an excellent session with some lively questions and answers and an opportunity to listen to candidates. Provided below are some observations of each candidate's presentation, starting with facts and arguments provided by the candidate and finishing with my personal opinion and feeling of the candidate.

One candidate, Sidney "Sid" Shelton, did not respond to several notes left behind at the residence listed on his petition to be placed on the ballot. RedEye reached David Nuckolls Jr., an attorney also running in the 20th Ward, but did not receive the responses to his questionnaire by press time. Answers have been condensed to give a sense of candidates' priorities and goals for the ward....

Hall of Fame Candidates Don't Measure Up To Santo
2010-11-08 23:14:00
This is another post about Ron Santo getting into the Hall of Fame, but it admittedly takes me awhile to get there. The Baseball Hall of Fame announced today that 12 individuals are up for election to the Hall by the new Expansion Era Committee and any winners will be announced at the baseball winter meetings in Orlando on December 6. The Hall has done away with the "we don't want anybody else in our club and if pressured, we'll just vote in a dead guy like Joe Gordon" panel of all living HOF members doing the Veterans voting. Instead, this year the new panel votes on a group selected from 1973-present. Next year, the panel will look at Golden...

As every other outlet did today, Ken Rosenthal reported on the Mets dwindling the GM field down to two, but Rosenthal also had some other tidbits of information...Apparently Allard Baird had some out-of-the-box ideas, my first thought was, which core player did he suggest to trade but who knows what he said, the ideas were described as "intriguing":Allard Baird, the Mets’ only other candidate with previous GM experience, had three 100-loss seasons with the Royals. He presented several intriguing “outside-the-box” ideas, but would have been tough to sell to a frustrated fan base, one source said. Also the GM candidates were asked to give a list of managerial prospects, according to Rosenthal both Alderson and Byrnes had Backman on their list:Both Alderson and Byrnes presented lists of four or five managerial candidates in their initial interviews. Each of their lists included Mets Class A manager Wally Backman, sources said.source Ken Rosenthal

Richmond candidates Myrna Lopez and Maria Viramontes are making news in their races for City Council. Their top priorities are creating jobs in Richmond to get residents back to work, and improving public safety.Richmond has been learning more about Lopez and Viramontes in recent days as they have been getting the word out.According to a mail piece advocating on behalf of Myrna Lopez:Fighting to Bring 1,200 New Jobs to Richmond: Myrna Lopez knows creating good-paying jobs in Richmond begins with working with Richmond?s biggest employers ? not driving them away. As a member of the City Council, Myrna Lopez drove a tough bargain with Chevron for an agreement that would have created 1,200 new jobs and reduced pollution by upgrading older equipment at the refinery.According to the piece about Maria Viramontes:Creating a Brighter Future for Richmond Tomorrow: Nine years ago, Maria took civic involvement to a new level, running and winning a seat on the Richmond City Council. Analysis of The Chicago Mayoral Candidates Forum Held In Chicago Today
2010-10-17 05:29:00
Editors Note -- I am responding to a couple of voicemail media messages and a few others today asking for my analysis of today's Chicago Black Mayoral Candidates Forum, and my response was to re-issue the analysis I authored the other day on the subject. There is No such process that will produce a singular Black "consensus" Chicago Mayoral candidateThe old adage, "action speaks louder than words" completely describes the current state of Black politics in Chicago.   When the first African American mayor of Chicago succumbed to a heart attack on November 25, 1987, that event would only represent the first of a series of political tragedies the Black community would have to endure. Next, would come the protracted...

LP Monday Message: Candidates, Campaigns, Polls, Fundraising
2010-09-21 04:35:00
LP Monday Message: Candidates, Campaigns, Polls, Fundraising posted by Staff on Sep 20, 2010 September 20, 2010 Dear Friend of Liberty, We have a great slate of over 800 Libertarian candidates for the upcoming November elections. Many of them are looking for more coverage on our website, in our emails, and in LP News. They want publicity, donations and help. That's a good thing. Unfortunately, there's just too much information about our candidates for us to convey directly. And even though there are probably a hundred candidates around the country who would be happy to email all Libertarians nationwide each week, we know that you might not appreciate getting that much unsolicited email. We have to rely on our state and local affiliates to provide announcements about the campaigns. I also encourage you to seek out candidates you might be interested in, and get more information. You can visit all 800 candidates listed here. Some of them have websites with email announcements ...

Libertarian party of New York needs help getting its candidates on the ball
2010-06-28 19:56:00
June 28, 2010 Dear Friend of Liberty, The Libertarian Party of New York needs our help getting its candidates on the ballot this year. Please make a generous donation today. The New York LP needs 15,000 valid signatures in a petition drive starting July 6 and ending August 17. That's just 6 weeks. While we expect many New Yorkers to volunteer and for the state party to spend most of their own funds on this drive, they simply cannot make this happen without financial help from the National Libertarian Party. The Libertarian National Committee (LNC) recently approved spending $25,000 to aid New York's petition drive. We haven't spent that money, but we've authorized it. Authorizing those funds was a very difficult decision for the LNC. Our resources are limited, and deciding how to fairly and optimally allocate funds is not easy. ...

Dem Gov. Candidates Debate: A Question of Competence
2010-01-26 04:09:00
Is it really all about the competence, stupid? If you watched the entertaining (for political standards) debate between Quinn and Hynes tonight, you didn't lack for political vitriol. Smarting from Hynes' attack on his competence, Quinn hit back hard, mentioning Hynes' own incompetence in nearly every answer. I'll try to get some video up tomorrow morning, but here's the Tribune write-up:Hynes contended it showed Washington firing Quinn for "incompetence and mismanagement", adding "that's what we got" from Quinn's first year as governor.Quinn responded that he quit the Washington administration at the mayor's request because he was in a dispute with the mayor's chief of staff, and without giving specifics Quinn implied that he was under pressure to give breaks to...
