Obama's Possible Candidates for Education Secretary By PAUL BASKEN
2008-11-22 01:42:00
[RE-PRINTED FROM THE CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION--Wednesday, November 5, 2008]If history is any guide, Barack Obama will spend several weeks chugging through higher priorities on his presidential to-do list before choosing an education secretary. And if he follows past trends, Mr. Obama is not likely to choose a secretary on the basis of higher-education policy. His nominee will be the ninth U.S. secretary of education, and nearly all of the previous eight were known more for their backgrounds at the elementary and secondary levels.Only one had a background focused primarily on higher-education: Lauro F. Cavazos Jr., who had been president of Texas Tech University and dean of the Tufts University School of Medicine. Mr. Cavazos was named education secretary in 1988, the last year of the Reagan administration, and resigned in 1990, under President George Bush."There's been a big emphasis, sure, on elementary and secondary," Mr. Cavazos said in an interview. "That's where practical...
The Constitution, Two Candidates & An Election

-By Nancy Salvato We are presently witnessing an historic event during this 2008 presidential election. On the one hand, we could see the first female vice president resulting from the vote. On the other hand, we may find that we have elected our first black president. Either way, a glass ceiling will have been broken, heralding ...

First Solar (FSLR): A bet on both candidates

"Trading at 17 times 2009 earnings with a long-term growth rate above 56%, First Solar (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=fslr) (NASDAQ: FSLR (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=fslr)) looks ridiculously cheap at current levels," notes Paul Tracy (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2520 ).In his StreetAuthority Market Advisor (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2520 ), he adds, "Both U.S. Presidential candidates are talking about carbon regulation, which in turn will benefit green energy firms like First Solar." Here's his review."The company is the global leader in what's called thin-film solar technology. Thin-film cells are made from a material known as cadmium telluride rather than the more common polysilicon-based cells used by most solar PV cell producers. "Until the financial stabilization bill was passed in October including an eight year renewal of solar tax credits, there remained considerable uncertainty abo...
How Obama Has Changed How Candidates Pursue Political Office
2008-10-29 14:23:00
In every election cycle we hear about how some politician will change America - for the worse. If elected, he will …. And the whine is a bi-partisan whine. What is often not mentioned, until well after the fact, is how politicians change the political process while on the campaign trail. It’s happened several times in our ...

Asked for a reaction to the news that he'd been endorsed by reality-soap bad girl Heidi Montag of "The Hills," John McCain told Swampland: "I’m honored to have Heidi’s support and I want to assure her that I never miss an episode of 'The Hills,' especially since the new season started." Candidates point to alternative energy sources

"Both Presidential candidates have supported promoting natural gas over oil over oil given our country’s large gas reserves, and alternative energies such as solar and wind,” says Jim Oberweis, Jr. (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2361)Here-, the small cap growth fund manager and editor of The Oberweis Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2361) looks at several stocks that poised to benefit under a new administration.“Normally- we focus on tiny companies -- but the changing landscape –merits a mention of the likely beneficiaries, irrespective of market cap.“GMX Resources (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=) (NASDAQ: GMXR (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=gmxr)), one of our favorite US natural gas exploration and production companies, will benefit if demand for natural gas increases. Texas GOP Pressing Libertarian Candidates to Bow Out
2008-08-05 21:55:00
Looks like a former GOP State Rep called a few Libertarian candidates running in close races and asked them to drop out. From the Austin American Statesman:A former Republican state representative called three Libertarian Party candidates for the state House on Friday to request that they drop out of their races rather than take votes from their Republican opponents.Suzanna Hupp, who represented District 54 in Central Texas for 10 years, said she made the calls Friday because of concerns that the Libertarian candidates would take Republican votes and ultimately give Democrats control over state and national seats. "The fact is, we've got redistricting coming up in a few years," said Hupp, from Lampasas, who served in the House from 1997 to 2007, "and if the Republicans lose the (Texas) House of Representatives because there are a handful of people mad at them and vote for the Libertarians instead, then we could be in big trouble at the federal level."...Hupp said she called thr...

Where McCain and Obama stand on housing WASHINGTON - June 6, 2008 - As the race for the presidency shapes up as a contest between Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, and Sen. Barack Obama, who claims the Democratic nomination, here are their initial positions on housing and related economic issues. McCain: 1. Proposes to spend up to $10 billion to allow some homeowners to trade high-interest, adjustable-rate mortgages for fixed-rate loans. 2. Proposes a suspension of the 18.4-cent federal gas tax and 24.4-cent diesel tax during the summer. 3. Supports a middle-class tax cut by doubling the personal tax exemption for dependents to $7,000. 4. Calls for a simpler tax system with two tax rates and a generous standard deduction. 5. Supports making permanent the 2001 and 2003 income tax cuts and proposes cutting the corporate tax rate to 25 percent from 35 percent and allowing businesses to immediately write off capital expen...
