ACC WEEKLY WRAP-UP AND COMMENTARY BY THE EVIL Q jim@accnation.com I love warm weather. So it completely boggles my mind that I’m still sitting here while the weather is perfect. The word is upset. First there was sixth-seed Florida State knocking off third-seed Miami. Then there’s stunning upset. Fourth-seed Clemson shutdown top-seed Georgia Tech to move into the women’s ACC tennis championship against Duke. The nail-biting didn’t stop in the semifinals for Tiger fans as it took close to three and a half hours for Carol Salge ...
Canes Edge FSU for Series
2008-04-21 02:36:00
I for one am not a fan of shortened games. If you have travel restrictions, then schedule the damn games earlier or not at all. Ending game after 7 or 8 innings is foolish unless the weather is to blame. One of our 4 losses this season came to a premature finish against NC State. However, today the Canes benefited from the shortened game in a 11-10 victory over FSU in 7 innings.Topping the #2 team in the country proved difficult. Miami won the series 2-1 but did not prove themselves as the clearly superior team. What they did do was prove to the world that they can play with the very best and still produce at a high level. This indeed is the best baseball team in the country, particularly when they are hitting on all cylinders. The series with FSU proves it and this should give us some more confidence heading into the final stretch of the season.Today's victory was largely in part to eventual 1st round pick Yonder Alonso, who belted 2 home runs--one a grand slam, in driving 5 runs ...
Somehow Canes Remain #1
2008-04-16 21:22:00
I guess the pollsters were more impressed by our series sweep of #10 GT than I was. Frankly, I was pretty certain that the loss to FAU would drop us out of the top spot in the country, but most polls kept us at #1 with FSU in at #2.That leads up to this weekend's monster series at Tally against the Noles. Like I said before, this matchup will be Miami's first true test of the season. They've played some very good ballclubs, losing only 3 games all season. However, FSU is an elite team and presents a major challenge for the Canes. In terms of predictions, I couldn't tell you what I think. I don't follow college baseball all that often outside of the Canes and the CWS, so I don't know how we fare against the Seminoles. What I do know is that the Miami lineup is ridiculously balanced and the pitching staff is excellent when it is at its best. That should be enough to win a series against anybody, even the #2 team in the country. Before that though, the Canes have to stick it to the...
Canes Sweep Yellow Jackets
2008-04-14 03:33:00
Tough weekend to be a Canes fan. Yes, Miami dominated the 10th ranked Georgia Tech team, topping them 10-5, 15-5, and 9-3. However, the victories come with a heavy heart as the series initially had to be postponed due to the premature death of GT pitcher Michael Hutts. You never want to play teams facing this sort of situation. Either they'll rally around their fallen teammate and beat you, or their heads will understandably not be in the game and the victory means little. There are more important things sometimes than W's and L's. My condolences go out to the GT family.Game 1 saw the return of freshman Chris Hernandez's excellent form, as the lefty pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. Not quite the dominating stuff of earlier this season, but certainly an improvement from his last outing. His outstanding arm was backed up by the Canes bats that had disappeared earlier this week. Five different players managed to collect 3 hits each.Game 2 was played later that day and pr...

Canes Film Festival 2008

When: 14 - 25 May 2008Where: Palais des FestivalsCannes is the biggest and most famous film festival in the world. Advertisement document.write(''); Best known for starlets on the beach, stars on yachts and fractious bunfights at controversial screenings, the festival also has a proud history of upholding artistic standards within an industry increasingly dominated by the bottom line.Everyone has their own favourite Cannes moment - Jean-Paul Sartre strolling the Croisette in a bathing suit in 1947; Brigitte Bardot doing the same, to rather different effect, in 1953; the 1975 bombing attempt by an appropriately Buñuel-esque terrorist group called "People's Struggle Against The Perversion of Humanity" - the list goes on.In 1939, the world's leading film festival - Venice - was apparently being run by Fascist stooges. In response, the enterprising French drew up plans for the first Cannes Film Festival. Unfortunately, the war intervened and only one movie - The Hunchback of...

Dominating Performance by the Canes
2007-12-18 16:48:00
Newly ranked Miami Hurricanes basketball defeated Stetson 89-53 last night in a game that was never in doubt. This despite missing Jimmy Graham who was held out of the game to rest his injury. The win was propelled by a great night from the field, including 11/22 from the 3 point line. The victory leaves the Canes at 10-0 and rolling towards 4 more easy games on paper before playing Georgia Tech in January.Last night's game was a good indicator of how focused this team is by not experiencing a let down against an inferior opponent. That's the mark of a Top 25 ball club. Win the games you are supposed to win. Frank Haith's plan is finally coming to fruition it seems. Unfortunately, despite their efforts the Canes only managed to draw about 1900 fans to the game. Surely this will go up during ACC play, especially vs North Carolina, but it remains as proof that 1) this is a football school and 2) we have some really fair weather fans down here in the Miami area.
Canes Crack the Top 25
2007-12-17 23:42:00
Miami finally gets the respect they deserve and are ranked 22nd in both major polls today. This is a step up from what I expected as usually it is difficult for voters to rank unfamiliar teams in the top 25 even when they are undefeated. Granted, the Hurricanes definitely needed to beat Mississippi State to prove they were worth it, so I think the time is right for the ranking. Miami remains #1 in the RPI and ESPNRPI Polls. On that note, the Canes play creampuff Stetson tonight at the BankUnited Center and should roll if they play as they have of late. In fact, expect the team to be 14-0 and ranked somewhere between 15-17 by the time they face Georgia Tech in January to open ACC play.Check out the full rankings here.
Canes Recruiting Update
2007-12-16 17:35:00
Being inspired by last night's performance by future Miami commits from Miami Northwestern, I felt it was time to update the status of some of our potential commits. This weekend we hosted 11 players, notably K Jake Wieclaw (a likely commit any time now), FB Patrick Hill (same), and DE Toby Jackson, currently committed to Georgia. Absent was CB Janoris Jenkins who canceled his trip and instead committed to the Gators.Expect about 7 or 8 of our verbals to enroll early at the U and count towards last seasons total, allowing us to sign about 33 kids this upcoming class (NCAA rules only allow 25 commitments a year). Who those early enrollees will be varies from the source, but I've heard consistently that Forston will be here early. Matt Patchan, son of a former Cane and a 5 star OL plans on enrolling early wherever he signs, so he might be an option. Finally, the two most sought after recruits of this Miami class are soon to let us know where they are going. LB Arthur Brown decides to...
Canes Receiving Lofty Praise
2007-12-15 15:28:00
For those of you with ESPN Insider access, I suggest reading Andy Katz' blog entry about the Canes basketball team. Our undefeated run went mostly unnoticed by the major media outlets, but now that Miami is poised to get to 14-0 and are sitting atop the RPI Poll, people are paying attention. Apparently Frank Haith's former boss at Texas, Rick Barnes, has kept an eye on his protege's team and has high praise for it. The Longhorns are also undefeated at this time by the way. Next time the Top25 Polls get announced, expect Miami to be there at around 23rd or 24th.
Canes Remain Undefeated
2007-12-14 11:09:00
The Canes B-Ball team stayed unbeaten last night with probably their toughest game of the year so far by beating Mississippi State 64-58. They trailed late into the game but Jack McClinton absolutely blew up for 29 points, including a flurry of 3's late in the game to put away the Bulldogs. They now face a relatively easy path to 14-0 before ACC play starts, and will be ranked in the Top 25 when the next polls are released.I have to say I'm proud of the effort. The Canes did not shoot well at all from the field (34%) and need better production from their front line (6 for 24 shooting for 17 points). In fact, McClinton was the only player to even sniff double-figures tonight. However, they did keep turnovers down for the most part (can't blame McClinton for his 4 considering he has that injury) and played excellent defense yet again, holding MSU to 37% shooting. Regardless of how ugly the box score may look, this team is tough and are proving they can close games.
Peppermint and Vanilla Butter Cookies (Inspired by Candy Canes for Christma
2007-12-12 18:58:00
Just as wreaths, stockings and mistletoes signify the spirit of christmas, cookies and cakes do their part in spreading the joy all around. As the festival of christmas is just a few days away, people have started baking goodies and packing them in decorative tin boxes and wrapping papers, shipping them across to their loved ones and friends, wishing them joy and success in the days to come. Some flavors and smells reign the kitchens in these festive days, including, but not limited to chocolate, peppermint, vanilla, and of course, gingerbread! Joining in the fun and having found a reason to bake more often, I decided to go for a batch of these beautiful pink and white Swirl Cookies flavored with peppermint and vanilla. I love the candy canes and the beautiful ribbon patterns that they form, but I can't take too much of peppermint in one go. So here's the perfect solution, these basic sugar cookies, with a hint of peppermint and all the goodness of the lovely colors.Ingredients1 c...

'Canes sweep Eastern Canada
2007-10-14 16:14:00
After an embarrassing loss to the Caps last Saturday, the Canes traveled to Toronto with a new optimism. After falling behind 1-0 early in the first the Canes came out firing and shamed the Leafs with a final score of 7-1 (Williams, Stillman, Cullen, Whitney, Walker, Hamilton, and Staal; that's right, seven different scorers) A sub-par game for the Leafs, but it was important for the Canes to get that type of offense rolling. This was the motivation they needed. Two nights later they took on the previously undefeated Senators. After both teams testing the water and basically just scrambling to get something going, Erik Cole opened up the scoring for the Canes. 6 minutes into the 3rd and the Canes go up 4-1. With less than 5 minutes left to go the Canes defense seemed to back off and slow down. This was answered with two quick goals by Mike Fisher and Joe Corvo of the Sens. When the Sens pulled Gerber to get the extra attacker on the ice, the Canes sealed their win when Eric Staal sc...

Canes Exhibition Game 1
2007-09-17 21:49:00
So far, so good.I won't do a play-by-play analysis of the game, but just mention a few that stood out to me.Noah Babin who will be playing in Albany for the Canes looked great out there. Tallying the first goal and handling the puck really well may just get him his ticket to come to Carolina should one of our defensemen go out of commission.Erik Cole seemed to return to pre-neck injury form. He was flying around that ice and throwing himself around all 22 minutes of his ice time. There was one scary moment for him when a hard hit on one of the Caps left the player laying on the ice for a minute and you could see Cole was afraid he had seriously injured the guy as he bent down to wait with him until someone could come help him off the ice. Erik was called for boarding on that play. The other highlight of the night was netminder Michael Leighton, who we acquired during the offseason. He relieved John Grahame halfway through the 2nd period and stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced. (The ...
