2009-09-17 19:41:00
When someone tells you that TV is "going to pot," you can now take them literally, because "all things marijuana" has found a TV channel it can call its own!  It's the latest in a new wave of niche marketing where TV programming is devoted to one topic!

NZ Police Intel 'New Cannabis'
2009-01-05 01:26:00
The 102 page report is on the Police website at http://www.police.govt.nz/resou-rces/2008/Cannabis_Strategic_As-sessment_Final3_2007_mirror.pdf-It is written in the traditional Image via Wikipediaprohibitionist style, is poorly referenced, makes numerous sweeping declarations (one sample 4.2.4 below), and is effectively a call to arms against cannabis, and by implication, the cannabis law reform movement. It makes use of SHORE's data, cherry picks a little from others, but treats statements by the INCB, Kofi Annan, Mario Costa as data. Some sections, including some recommendations , are withheld , under the OIA act. (heads up thanks to BrandonH)4.2.4 Cannabis Hospital Admissions by Gender and Age The abuse of cannabis by young New Zealanders is a key focus of this assessment primarily because of the widely held perception that cannabis is a harmless drug. Many young people know national policies on cannabis vary from country to country that includes partial legalisation in some countrie...
Cannabis Intel, a "confident suppose" is the best we'll get!

Displace Alcohol Problems with Cannabis Benefits.
2008-12-13 09:33:00
Image via Wikipedia Cheers! We're killing ourselves with hypocritical double standards A massive hike in alcohol prices is the key solution to a national booze problem which kills nearly three people every day and injures many more, say doctors and counsellors.Just because something is affordable doesn't make it laudable....Creating an artificial difference by excise tax is an blatant admission of our systemic drug policy failure. The curtailment of adult choice by the creation of an artificial red line will be no barrier to access, only the choices will alter as they have done in Victoria, Australia. This is a harm maximising strategy masquerading as good policy from which nothing significant will be achieved. If politics is the art of the possible, this suggestion is the graffiti of the stupid.Do we really want to hand hard liquors over to criminal supply chains and add to our justice burden in so doing? And who is going to benefit from that?Alcohol is a contributing factor to 70...

Cannabis, Teens and Schizophrenia
2008-09-25 07:32:00
I received a mail today from someone who attended an interesting conference in the Midwest. At a Mental Illness and Criminal Justice Conference today in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Frederick Frese, who is the Coordinator of the Summit County Recovery Project and Assistant Prof of Psychology in Clinical Psychology at NEOUCOM and Case Western Reserve U, and on the Board of Trustees for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, gave a session on teenage cannabis use and schizophrenia. He has been a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic for 40 years.Frese stated that use of cannabis between the ages of 15 and 18 in persons who have a variant allele of the COMT gene will lead to an almost certain psychotic break by the age of 25. He said it's because of the formative time that the brain is in during those years, in combination with that certain allele, together with cannabis use.He said that if you have do not have the variant allele, no problem. Frese is so concerned about this that he and his tea...
Cannabis Is Good For You
2008-08-15 08:24:00
Well, not necessarily in general, but if you are a regular methamphetamine user, there is a suggestion that you get less, not more, brain damage if you concurrently use cannabis than if you use methamphetamine only. The fact that there is a drug that gets you high that might actually be protective of brain damage in some cases is downright fascinating. For a widely-praised review of whether or not cannabis causes brain damage, see here.

Cannabis and Brain Damage: Structural Evidence
2008-08-10 13:52:00
A major charge against cannabis is that it causes actual structural damage to the brain, that is, damage to the brain cells, axons and dendrites themselves. In this post, we will look at this charge. In other posts, we will look at other charges relating to cannabis and brain damage.A frequent charge is that marijuana causes "changes to the hippocampus", which may or may not be permanent.A new study released in early June 2008 suggested that use of more than 5 joints/day for more than 10 years (average of 20 years) caused shrinkage of the hippocampus and the amygdala in the brain. The hippocampus of the cannabis users was 12% smaller, and the amygdala was 7.1% smaller. The cannabis users also did poorer on a word recall test.Nadia Solowij of Australia was involved in this study, and her studies, for whatever reason, almost always find serious harm from cannabis, even at low doses (see below). However, three other studies found no hippocampal damage from cannabis. An MRI study from 2...
Cannabis grower denied home detention

A year for pot, fur krise ake! $200 tonnes or more is dispatched benignly, the social harms are weak, and harms to self, while also 'very weak' who the hell cares? Judge Harding has just added about $100,000 to the 'pterodactyl prevention' budget. Further, this man will probably never work again and who could blame him. No doubt the Police could equally argue that they have saved the community Millions.... Puke! /BlairCannabis grower denied home detentionMonday July 07, 2008Home detention was "inappropriate" for a man who had been growing cannabis to supplement his sickness benefit, a judge said today. It was precisely the sort of offending Lawrence Frederick Williams had been committing from home, said Judge Christopher Harding in Tauranga District Court.Williams, 43, was jailed for 12 months when he appeared for sentence on four charges - cultivating, possessing and supplying cannabis, and possessing methamphetamine. He had converted a bedroom for growing cannabis, a drug he ha...
Cannabis is not a cause of anti-social behaviour.
2008-06-06 02:47:00
Image via Wikipedia In the politics of drug policy in the community an emerging concern is being expressed characterised by an anti-fun, anti-youth intolerance ranging from neo-prohibitionism to a 'more rules is better than some rules' debate surrounding alcohol deficits in the community. If Cannabis is not a cause of anti-social behaviour AND cannabis is displacing alcohol and other mind altering substances it can be reasonably argued its use is ''harm minimizing" AND producing a positive social outcome. And why do those who are morally (or politically) concerned 'about drug harms' resist change (ie: "we don't need a third drug!") when cannabis is so prevalent and so benign by any comparison yet 'in their name and mine' its draconian sanction so damaging."The Advisory Council also found that cannabis use isn't actually associated with antisocial or criminal behaviour, but the public perception is that it is, because there's a lot of misleading information which confuses p...

Long-term daily cannabis use seen harmful to brain tissue, mental health
2008-06-03 09:33:00
Image by Getty Images via DaylifeDr. Yucel says "Many people in the community, as well as cannabis users themselves, believe that cannabis is relatively harmless and should be legally available,"(see Yucel Research link here)This argument is a straw man.The heavy use of cannabis as characterized by this study [5+ daily joints*356*10yrs] would be the extreme exception in consumption. It would be very difficult to find 15 cannabis only consumers in Australia using at this level.(further) This heavy consumption was occurring in a context of absolute prohibition, clear evidence of policy 'efficacy' failure being so predicated on zero tolerance of any harm. But what do we find? A harm association by a correlation only, and as reported elsewhere - no basis for thinking there is cannabis harm causation other than at sub clinical behavioral measures.Remember the UN cannabis related covenants sanctions billions of dollars annually on police, justice, law, and corrections and maintains a cult...
Cannabis - no threat. Very relevant to NZ Law Comm. review?
2008-05-31 20:38:00
Small data set but very relevant to NZ Law Comm. drug policy review? It complements the important sociology research paper presented by Geoff Noller at Otago University in early May. STUDY SHOWS MARIHUANA USE NOT A THREAThttp://www.mapinc.org/nor-ml/v08/n541/a11.htm"I would argue that it is the prohibition of marihuana that actually leads to crime," he said. "Not that there aren't any cases where someone is inebriated and in such a state that they aren't thinking clearly and do things that normally they wouldn't do, but that is the same with alcohol. If you look at it, the drug that is most highly correlated with crime, particularly violent crime, is alcohol. And no one is calling for that to be criminalized." .... snip...."Although these findings are not generalizable given the small sample size, if they are corroborated by further ethnographic research there may be a compelling reason to reconsider present laws that prohibit marihuana use and treat recreational marihuana users a...

Cannabis linked to use of amphetamines

Cannabis linked to use of amphetamines and concrete floors!More people who have friends who smoke cannabis are likely to walk on concrete floors too err. well thats correlation for ya!! (/blair!) Doctors have tracked 2,000 Victorian high school students for 10 years and found those who were smoking cannabis at the age of 15 were as much as 15 times more likely to be using amphetamines in their early 20s. The work, to be published in the August edition of the journal Addiction also dispels the image of ice and speed users as young, wealthy party-goers. "That's something which people have speculated on for decades and decades - that there was some progression in the way in which young people are introduced to drugs. You start with tobacco and alcohol, move to cannabis, once you feel comfortable with the former, once you feel comfortable with cannabis, you're more likely to move onto other drugs. And that's certainly the progression that we found with amphetamine use," one of...

What, we can order Cannabis seeds online?
2008-05-14 16:59:00
Yes, that?s right folks! Much to my surprise, people can actually order and purchase Cannabis seeds online!I found that out after stumbling upon FlyingDutchmen Dot Com a few hours ago. It turns out that the former mentioned site belongs to Flying Dutchmen, one of the oldest Cannabis seeds retailers in Netherlands (Holland to some people).I took a closer look at FlyingDutchmen Dot Com and found that it also has feminized seeds, sensi, various sativa and indica seeds too. What bothers me the most is the fact FlyingDutchmen Dot Com has an outgoing link that leads to a video channel that seems to promote prohibitive use of cannabis and marijuana! This is quite outrageous! That outgoing link raised a lot of questions about FlyingDutchmen Dot Com. Sure, cannabis and Marijuana do have medicinal properties that can be put to good use. I?m sure that many concerned people out there would not mind if cannabis and marijuana are used for good purposes. FlyingDutchmen Dot Com in the other hand has...

"It is therefore recommended that an intersectoral policy to improve health by reducing cannabis related harm should be developed as part of a comprehensive national policy on tobacco, alcohol and other drugs." (notably a health primitive completely at odds with the terms of reference of the Law Commission, though remarkably like Class D)Monitoring and evaluationPolicy should be continually monitored and evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives and is in line with the latest evidence. Because of their integral nature, monitoring and evaluation should be built into the policy development process itself. Pro-cannabis protest held in peace, man
2008-05-01 18:49:00
Police made no arrests at a pro-cannabis protest in Invercargill yesterday — despite a cannabis plant being in plain view and supporters openly smoking the drug.A police officer at the scene, next to the Cenotaph in Dee St, read the Misuse of Drugs Act but after talking with the protesters did not act on it.Protest co-ordinator Dakta Green said it was the group's most heated exchange with police on its nationwide protest tour but was pleased it had not gone further. "It was a perfectly reasonable and responsible thing for the Invercargill police to do — this is a peaceful political protest and they did right to step back and withdraw." There had been two arrests on the tour, in Palmerston North on Good Friday, for cannabis use.Senior Sergeant Olaf Jensen, of Invercargill, said police didn't undertake the search for operational reasons.Southland area commander Inspector Tony O'Neill said the group's aim was to provoke a reaction — which police were not going to give it.He a...
Cannabis a Political Football

He said it was time to take decisions about how illegal substances were classified out of the hands of ministers and base them on science, rather than political and public opinion. The former Home Secretary Charles Clarke is understood to support such a shake-up, while Professor Sir Michael Rawlins - outgoing chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, the Home Office's advisory body - is also said to be concerned about the wa...

Cannabis so strong V8 driver stoned for two years.
2008-04-28 16:18:00
Re: Motorsport: NZ Race Driver Banned After Positive Drug TestThe V8 driver was tested for the presence of metabolites of cannabis. The metabolites are the left overs, the residual chemical structure from the active ingredient. They are not proof of impairment rather the opposite, their existence shows that what ever THC (and any impairment associated with the unfamiliarity with the THC experience) has been used up, its gone, no longer active however they are proof, even at nanogram quantities that cannabinoids have been in this driver system.Personally, I would rather work, recreate and take risks (and have done so many times) with someone who can make a rational choice to consume cannabis in a responsible manner than someone for whom other drugs, many of them legal, can have confounding effects. The former UK top cop, Det. Chief Super, Eddie Ellison described cannabis testing of drivers as the logical equivalent of licking the exhaust pipe to see if the car exceeded the speed limit...
Dunedin Overgrown By Cannabis Truth
2008-04-25 21:29:00
The long-smouldering debate over cannabis law reform will be reignited when Dunedin activists host a series of public events designed to inform and educate the community about the cannabis plant. The Otago University branch of the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), with support from the Otago University Students' Association (OUSA), is preparing to kick off Cannabis Awareness Week on the Otago University Campus in Dunedin.Cannabis sativa, while being one of mankind's longest cultivated crops, has only in recent times become a source of great controversy. Sadly, this controversy is generally framed in divisive rhetoric based on unexamined premises, and is rarely thoroughly discussed.Cannabis Awareness Week kicks off with the arrival of Mary Jane the CannaBus in Dunedin, the final destination NORML New Zealand's six-week tour of the country, raising awareness and encouraging law reform in this election year 2008. Psychedelic Cannabis
