Canonical Tag - Really useful for SEO
2009-05-20 17:44:00
It was only a few months ago, that Kerry reported that the major search engines had been working together to create a new tag that allows webmasters to specify which version of a URL they want to be indexed. It was decided that this was necessary, as there are lots of issues of duplicate content on many websites caused by a variety of problems - some of which can be easily fixed, with others that are quite difficult to overcome. Duplicate content is a problem for lots of websites - certainly it's something that we encounter on a daily basis working on a number of campaigns, particularly at the beginning of a campaign, where we have to unravel the mess that we are sometimes given to work with. Sometimes this is caused by shopping carts - lots of shopping carts will have the same products across different categories, each with its own URL. Previously this was very difficult to fix, as short of only having a product in 1 category (which wouldn't be sensible from a user of the ...

Ubuntu/Canonical not helping ?us? compute?
2008-02-04 02:12:00
Recently Ubuntu/Canonical contacted me for the use of buntu in our domain name. I had emailed them long before any announcement of the site but with no reply until the site began to attract visitors/users. I understand that Ubuntu/Canonical has a job to do when it comes to protecting their best interest. But Ourbuntu is doing nothing more than giving users the ability to setup a Ubuntu/Linux based system and sell it at no cost. Which helps promote the use of opensource software.

10 Open Source Companies Set to Dominate 2008
2007-12-17 19:07:00
The VAR Guy spent most of 2007 blogging about open source start-ups and open source business models. As he looks ahead to 2008, The VAR Guy knows hundreds of open source software providers are seeking to catch on in the corporate market. Here are the top 10 open source providers and platforms that are set to succeed in 2008.
Red Hat?s Loss Is Ubuntu Linux?s Gain
2007-12-11 21:14:00
Time for The VAR Guy to stir up a little controversy, this time in the Linux desktop market. He thinks a small desktop setback at Red Hat could lead to more PC momentum for Ubuntu Linux. Here's the scoop.
Ubuntu Linux Is Dead, Long Live Ubuntu Linux
2007-12-06 01:58:00
The VAR Guy received a rude greeting when he returned home from a business trip last night. His Ubuntu PC from Dell was dead. Fried. Done. Well, not entirely. But things were bad. The PC was displaying a bunch of errors and never fully booted up. But this sad story has a happy ending for The VAR Guy and Ubuntu.
Dell Sells 40,000 Linux Desktops; Preps Ubuntu Server Push
2007-11-30 18:40:00
OK, so Dell's desktop Linux PCs aren't setting the world on fire. The PC giant has sold about 40,000 of the Ubuntu Linux PCs since introducing them at the end of July. That's a run rate of about 8,000 per month. And one of those systems was sold to The VAR Guy. So what will Dell do next? End the Linux experiment based on slow sales? Guess again.

TechIQ?s Founder: Leaping From Windows to Mac OS or Linux?
2007-11-16 15:14:00
Posted by Mike Perkowski: I have to admit ... I?ve always thought The VAR Guy was whining needlessly when it came to his lamentations about Windows XP and Vista. Why was he so ecstatic about dumping Windows for Mac and/or Ubuntu Linux? But then my own 3-year-old Dell desktop crashed at home this weekend -- and my outlook suddenly changed. Now, I need everyone?s input to help me decide what to do next: Vista, Mac OS or Linux?
Novell: The Avis of Open Source?
2007-11-12 19:55:00
Whenever The VAR Guy hears chatter about Novell, he thinks of Avis -- the Number 2 rental car company that proudly declares "We try harder" as it pursues the market leader (Hertz, er, Red Hat). Hmmm. Is 2008 the year that all of Novell's hard work in the open source market finally pushes the company into the fast lane? UBS, the Wall Street analyst firm seems to think so. But The VAR Guy isn't so sure.
Novell?s Small Loss, And Huge Linux Win
2007-11-08 19:04:00
Sometimes, reporters spend too much time looking at a tree and never see the bigger forest. For instance, lots of folks are writing about Novell changing its channel chief. Excuse The VAR Guy as he yawns. In fact, something far more strategic -- and interesting -- has occurred at Novell.
Google, Ubuntu Linux Going Mobile Together?
2007-11-04 18:59:00
Lots of folks -- including The VAR Guy -- expect Google to announce a mobile software/phone strategy on November 5. Now for the rather interesting twist: The VAR Guy wonders if Ubuntu Linux will be Google's preferred platform for a range of forthcoming mobile devices and services.
Wal-Mart Stocks Ubuntu Linux
2007-11-02 16:26:00
It's another small step for Linux on the desktop, and another great leap for Ubuntu -- one of the fastest-growing flavors of Linux. Retail giant Wal-Mart is now offering Ubuntu-based PCs from Everex. The $200 system signals growing interest in Windows alternatives among mainstream consumers. Next up, watch for Ubuntu to land on some niche small business servers.
Landmark Day for Desktop Linux
2007-10-18 18:09:00
When the history of desktop Linux is written, open source pundits will likely point to October 18, 2007, as an historic date. Although most of the desktop industry is gearing up for Apple's Leopard upgrade and Microsoft's Windows Vista Service Pack 1, a small but significant Linux product launch -- occurring today -- could eventually bring open source to the masses.
Canonical Looking For Contracts
2007-10-12 23:18:00
Canonical, the supporting company of Ubuntu Linux, is trying to make deals with large hardware vendors like Dell, so their Linux distribution gets pre-installed on servers. Until now, Canonical has made contracts with small vendors. The company is discussing with hardware vendors for a big server deal that could help improve its standing on the enterprise market.Gerry Carr, marketing manager at Canonical, said: "We haven't got the same deal as we have with Dell on desktop. My personal belief is that it [a deal] will happen reasonably soon."The decision took by Dell, to pre-install Ubuntu Linux on their desktop systems, didn't involve Canonical in any way. Dell said that customers were the ones who demanded this change. If Dell's clients will ask for Ubuntu Server, then the company will deliver it, just like it happened for the desktop computers. The success of the two desktop PCs and the Inspiron E1505n notebook with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed on them is not known because Dell want...
New Linux Server Competition for Novell, Red Hat?
2007-10-10 17:07:00
There's a growing body of evidence suggesting that Novell and Red Hat could soon face new competition in the Linux server market. Something new from Microsoft? Nope. Another attack from Oracle? Not quite. This time, the competition could come from tiny Canonical and the company's latest Ubuntu Linux release.

Dell Preps for Next Linux Desktop Release
2007-10-08 16:43:00
A major desktop Linux upgrade is set to be released on October 18. Michael Dell is expected to personally use it. And the PC giant will pre-load it on selected desktops and notebooks. Buzz about this next Linux release -- dubbed Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon -- is growing across the web. But what exactly does Gutsy Gibbon (aka Ubuntu 7.10) offer to desktop customers and solutions providers? Here's a look.
Shipt va a seguir con Gutsy

Dell?s Desktop Linux Strategy: Slow and Steady
2007-09-17 16:24:00
So far, so good. That statement sums up Dell's current desktop Linux strategy, which focuses heavily on the Ubuntu operating system from Canonical. Dell insiders tell The VAR Guy that reaction to  the company's Ubuntu PCs, introduced in June, has been good. Even so, Dell representatives are careful not to hype the machines. Here's why.
Windows Vista Service Pack: No Thanks (For Now)
2007-08-30 17:44:00
Microsoft has finally confirmed plans for the first Windows Vista Service Pack in 1Q 2008. That's nice. But The VAR Guy isn't going to take the Vista bait anytime soon. Here's why.

Novell?s CEO: Painted Into A Corner?
2007-08-10 22:13:00
Novell CEO Ron Hovsepian is calling for a standardized way to develop Linux applications across multiple distributions (Novell, Red Hat, etc.). Hmmm. Hovsepian's motivations are easy to understand -- Novell badly trails Red Hat when it comes to Linux application support. But will anybody answer his call for help?
