Chaucer's Realism in ?The Canterbury Tales?
2008-05-14 16:19:00
Literature is the mirror of its age. Supreme literary artist is one who becomes a mouthpiece and provides a real picture of his age with its minute details. Chaucer is a perfect representative of his age. He is in true sense a social chronicler of England. His poetry reflects the 14th century not in fragment but as a complete whole. Realism of Chaucer in ?The Canterbury Tales? not gives us the impression that whatever has been described is real in the ordinary sense of the word. Realism is not reality; it is a collective term for the devices that give the effect of reality. Chaucer represented life in its nakedness. ?What he has given is a direct transpiration of daily life.? Chaucer's principle object of writing poetry was to portray men and women truthfully without any exaggeration and to present an exact picture of average humanity. He painted life as he saw it, and he saw it with so observant eye that it seems that he was viewing all the events as well as characters throug...
Chaucer's ?The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales?: Art of Characterization
2008-05-13 20:06:00
On the aisle of English poetry, Chaucer flourishes the fantastic colours of his words and paints different characters of his age with minute observation. Indeed, he is a great painter who paints not with colours but with words. Undoubtedly, he has: ?The Seeing Eye, the retentive memory, the judgment to select and the ability to expound.? His keen analysis of the minutest detail of his characters, their dresses, looks and manners enable him to present his characters lifelike and not mere bloodless abstractions. His poetical piece, ?The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales? is a real picture gallery in which thirty portraits are hanging on the wall with all of their details and peculiarities. Rather it is a grand procession with all the life and movement, the colour and sound. Indeed, ?His characters represent English society, morally and socially, in the real and recognizable types?. And still more representative of humanity in general. So, the characters in Chaucer's ?The Prologue?...

Archbishop of Canterbury Hedges On Sharia Law View
2008-02-12 08:23:00
Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, slightly hedged his recent comments in which he urged the British nation to accept sharia law. Hitchens: To Hell With The Archbishop of Canterbury
2008-02-12 01:26:00
Christopher Hitchens has a great piece in Slate about the ridiculous endorsement of Sharia law by the archbishop of Canterbury. The worldwide criticism of the archbishop’s comments has now turned to calls for his resignation, which frankly are more than justified considering the stupidity of his comments. Does the Archbishop of Canterbury drive a Civic or Prius hybrid?
2008-02-09 20:56:00
The Archbishop of Canterbury is in the middle of a large controversy because of things he said about Sharia law. This is AutoblogGreen, so we are interested in what he drives. According to the Sun, a "perk" of being the Archbishop of Canterbury is: "chauffeur to appointments in a green Toyota Prius." That may not be correct as the BBC reports the Archbishop, Rowan Williams, drives a Civic hybrid. Virtue Online also says, "Dr Williams practises what he preaches and has already changed his predecessor's car for the environmentally-friendly Honda Civic hybrid, a car similar to the Toyota Prius, the hybrid petrol-electric car used by a number of Government ministers." So, on the list of famous celebrities that drive hybrids, add the head of England's church and the head of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Be sure to put an asterisk noting Civic or Prius hybrid. Below the fold is a Christmas video message from the Archbishop on sustainability.[Source: The Sun, BBC, Virtue Online]
*UPDATED* The Imam of Canterbury
2008-02-08 02:33:00
The most famous Archbishop of Canterbury was the martyred Thomas a Becket, a man who was ostensibly the victim of a political assassination, yet who essentially died for his faith. Thinking about Becket, I rather wonder what he would have made of the current occupier of his Bishopric, which is still the most important position in the Church of England

Christchurch Gate, Canterbury

Christchurch Gate (built in 1517) is the main entrance to the cathedral precincts.Buttermarket Square is immediately in front of Christchurch Gate. From the Square are streets such as Mercery Lane - a narrow medieval street with overhanging buildings. The bronze figure of Christ in the centre is a recent addition, a bronze figure installed in 1991 replacing a figure of Christ destroyed in 1642 by Parliamentarians. The elaborate carvings and shields are dedicated to the last patron of the Abbey, Prince Arthur, brother to Henry VIII. Prince Arthur died in 1502, leaving the way to his younger brother, Henry VIII to succeed as King of England.
The Tomb of Cardinal Pole in Canterbury Cathedral
2007-08-22 19:53:00
Sebastiano del Piombo,(1485 - 1547), Portrait of Cardinal Reginald Pole, 1540, The Hermitage, Saint Petersburg In his lifetime, he was a highly controversial figure. Even today, his memory can still arouse deep passions and hot debate.Reginald Pole (1500-1558) was one of the leading figures of the sixteenth-century Reformations. Throughout his life he served as a diplomat, cardinal, papal legate and archbishop. Pole, though, is probably best remembered for his prolific and often inflammatory writing. He is buried in the Corona of the Cathedral at Canterbury, close to the chair of St Auustine. Cardinal Pole, was the last Roman Catholic Archbishop of England. He was described by his successor as Archbishop of Canterbury, Matthew Parker,(non Roman Catholic) as the first ?inglese italianato, diavolo incarnato?.Pole was made cardinal under Pope Paul III in 1536, over Pole's own objections. In 1542 he was appointed as one of the three papal legates to preside over the Council of Trent, and...

Canterbury awaits Le Tour
2007-07-12 22:19:00
Taking a break from the Hebridean holiday blogging I report on that which would not be permitted up there. The first Sunday in July we visited our family in Canterbury and with them saw the first full stage of The Tour de France as it approached the final kilometer of the stage.Katy, Sahara, Elizabeth and Zac are in the midday sun by the roadside.About three hours before the cyclists were due to arrive we had secured a good position by the side of RheimsWay in Canterbury. We would see the riders come up this slight incline. Nte the lady partially shown on the right. Her's was the hand to spoil my day somewhat. We would then see thew riders negotiate this roundabout and head for the finish. the blue arch behind the advertising sign denotes the one kilometer mark to the finishing line. You can see we are just outside the city walls. The family waits behind the barriers which came off French lorries the night before. The Tour is a huge operation.
