Texas Man Executed for Decade-Old Murder HUNTSVILLE, Texas ? Texas has executed a man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend nearly a decade ago. Where the Candidates Stand on Capital Punishment
2008-04-25 20:22:00
News Update 04.25.08 North Carolina In this week’s Democratic NC gubernatorial debate, both candidates said that they support the death penalty if it is applied fairly. Beverly Perdue, unlike Richard Moore, supports a moratorium and further study of the issue. In the Iredell and Alexander County district attorney race, all three candidates have made clear that they ...
Is This What a Supreme Court Justice Is Supposed to Do?
2008-04-17 09:44:00
Justice John Paul Stevens, noted liberal member of the United States Supreme Court, was a dissenting voice in yesterday’s ruling that Kentucky’s death penalty was fine and dandy. In his dissent, he wrote: “[Capital punishment is a] pointless and needless extinction of life with only marginal contributions to any discernible social or public purposes.” He also wrote: “the risk of executing innocent defendants can be entirely eliminated by treating any penalty more severe than life imprisonment without the possibility of parole as constitutionally excessive.” It seems to me that he was just supposed to write about the Constitutionality of the act, but he has given his personal opinion, and maybe a way for it to be stopped. This isn’t about whether capital punishment is right or wrong, but whether Supreme Court Justices should be activists for a particular point of view. I think Justice Stevens is out of line and once again stepping outside...
Death Penalty Is Too Easy For These Two Monsters
2008-04-09 18:09:00
The death penalty. I have supported capital punishment in the past, and support it now, but I still wonder if I am right in my position. There are times, however, that my first and only thought is, “Kill ‘em.” This is one of those instances: It was clear from the bruises and other injuries on the little girl’s body that Sunday was not the first time she had been abused, Dauphin County coroner Graham Hetrick told WGAL-TV. He said it was one of the worst cases of child abuse he has ever seen. Baez, 19, called for an ambulance Sunday and said Johnson had brought the unconscious child to her, limp and wet from an attempt to revive her in a bathtub, a police affidavit said. Johnson, 26, acknowledged beating the girl with a video game controller but did not say why, police said. Baez said Johnson had abused the girl in the past and that she heard the girl scream after Johnson beat her Sunday, according to the affidavit. The child’s name was Darisabel Baez....
All Three Canidates for Capital Punishment!
2008-04-02 14:18:00
All Three Candidates for Capital Punishment! Unhappily all three of our presidential candidates still support capital punishment. One assumes lingering anxiety about offending the law and order nuts who see killing as a solution for crimes — or at least for soothing the bruised feelings of friends and relatives of murder victims. Ironically ...

Supreme Court Looks At Death Penalty For Child Rape
2008-01-04 23:23:00
The Supreme Court agreed Friday to decide whether a state can execute someone convicted of raping a child, one of the few remaining crimes that does not require the death of the victim to result in capital punishment. Patrick Kennedy, 43, was sentenced to death for the rape of his 8- year-old stepdaughter in Louisiana. He is ...

The Institution of Vengeance
2007-12-18 17:06:00
By Jared GableNew Jersey up and abolished the death penalty in that state yesterday. Some other states, Tennessee included, have established the same type of Legislative Committee used in New Jersey to study certain aspects of capital punishment within each state. Tennesseans should be interested in seeing what this committee has to say about the implementation of capital punishment in this state. It has always been interesting to me the way many Christians defend the use of the death penalty. I understand that many people think this country was founded on some kind of Judeo-Christian morality, whatever that means. If that is true, then I am compelled to ask the question, "Where in the teachings of Jesus is there any support for institutionalized vengeance?"
Is Deportation Akin to Capital Punishment?
2007-12-16 23:41:00
Should Canada be deporting people when the act is akin to nothing more than a death sentence? Hussein Jilaow was a violent criminal and a member of a local street gang here in Winnipeg known for its extreme brutality. The gang is largely comprised of African immigrants. Since coming to Canada in 1999 as a 14 ...

Kenneth Foster and Capital Punishment
2007-08-30 17:14:00
Yesterday, hours before his scheduled execution, Kenneth Foster was granted commutation by Texan Governor Rick Perry. Foster's sentence was controversial because he was convicted under the Texan "Law of Parties" statute, which makes no distinction between a perpetrator and an accomplice. The reprieve has rekindled the ongoing debate on capital punishment. Although many vocal citizens oppose it, Americans are still statistically in favor of the death penalty.
A Brief History of Capital Punishment in North Carolina
2007-08-29 20:17:00
Early America Colonists brought the practice of capital punishment with them from England. Many of the crimes that had been death-eligible in England - robbery, burglary, arson, counterfeiting, theft, and of course murder ? were quickly made capital in the common law. The colonies also executed people for other crimes, including witchcraft, aiding a ...

Capital Punishment Abortion Is Murder
2007-07-06 21:44:00
Recent comments from a post about legalized licenses to kill brought up some questions. For me, comparing the death penalty to abortion is absurd. Yes, we are all created equal, but it is what a man does in his life that determines whether he is righteous or wicked. Psychology, Anthropology, & Sociology :: Reasons for Capital Punishment
2007-06-28 04:28:00
Author: Eric Subject: Reasons for Capital PunishmentPosted: Wed Jun 27, 2007 10:28 pm (GMT -4) Reasons for Capital Punishment Gregory Koukl There's a reason both the Old and the New Testaments promote capital punishment. That reason was applicable then and still applies today. Apparently, Jesse Jackson made some comments on "Meet the Press" this morning referring to the possibility of capital punishment for Timothy McVeigh. He said, allegedly, that executing McVeigh would just be a trophy that the people of Oklahoma City would like to get in their trophy case to make them feel better. Jackson should have been ashamed of his comment. To refer the punishment of a man who is a convicted killer of 168 citizens of Oklahoma City by those who are deeply interested in justice as simply a quest for trophies is an insult to every person who lost a loved one in that explosion. It's an absolute insult, and it should be an insult to every clear-thinking American. Cap...

The Growing Crisis In The Adminstration Of Capital Punishment
2007-03-30 20:37:00
As I was researching the pros and cons abouth the Death Penalty, I came across this in The Congressional Record. For people who are visiting my blog for the first time. I decided after reading the book Journey Toward Justice, Author Dennis Fritz, to join his Journey Toward Justice. I started this blog to bring about Public Awareness of major issues in his book. This is one of them. I do wish Dennis Fritz a Wonderful Journey in his Journey Toward Justice. He was in prison for a unwarranted prosecution and wrongful conviction and spent 12 tortuous years in prison as a innocent man. Please pass my blog along and join My Journey. Here is what I read: Since it is from The Congressional Record I can Post the entire text.[Page: S198]Mr. LEAHY. Mr. President, I wish to call attention to a growing national crisis in the administration of capital punishment. People of good conscience can and will disagree on the morality of the death penalty. But I am confident that we should all be able to agr...

Catholics Against Capital Punishment.CACP strives to insure that members of the clergy and laypeople -- both Catholic and non-Catholic -- are aware of, and understand the seriousness of, Church teachings on capital punishment. It seeks to instill in elected officials the courage to resist the temptation to support the death penalty as a politically-expedient way of promoting themselves as "tough on crime."Its newsletter, CACP News Notes, disseminates news about Catholic-oriented anti-death penalty efforts to its individual members, diocesan social concerns offices, members of the hierarchy, and others.Write at:CACP, P.O. Capital Punishment - A Jewish Perspective What The Torah Clearly Says
2007-02-11 05:59:00
Capital Punishment - A Jewish PerspectiveThe Torah clearly says that there are crimes, which deserve the punishment of death. However, Jewish tradition makes it equally clear that only under the most exceptional circumstances can a human court be so certain of the guilt of the accused that an execution can be carried out. These restrictions include the requirement of two eyewitnesses of unquestionable character and the prohibition of circumstantial evidence and of self-incrimination, even confession. These and other rules make a death sentence virtually impossible in a Jewish court. The procedures and rules governing capital cases in the judicial system of the United States is entirely unacceptable according to Jewish tradition.Book Recommendation - Journey Toward Justice Author Dennis Fritz On Amazon Here

Response From a Reader Concerning the Capital Punishment
2007-01-02 02:49:02
The following is a response from a reader in the comment section.  His words are in blue, while mine shall remain in black. Pope John Paul II made significant errors within his Evagelium Vitae, with regard to the death penalty and, as a result, those teachings should not have been enterred into the Catechism. Please review. I am not a theologian, so I won’t be able to go into Evangelium Vitae extensively.  However, I do find it puzzling that those who are for a more liberal use of the death penalty by the state tend to say that Pope John Paul II was absolutely in error in the writing of the encyclical, and thus we do not have to take his words as authoritative.  Or better yet, that an encyclical itself is not infallible, therefore we don’t have to follow it’s teaching.  I would remind my fellow Catholics that, although an encyclical is not necessarily an infallible declaration, it is still very much authoritative.  Pope Pius XII states...
Capital Punishment, Cardinal Martino and the Catholic Church
2006-12-29 18:56:01
I had said I would be taking a break from blogging during the holiday season, but having returned from vacation I couldn't help but take an interest in an ongoing debate on Evangelical Catholicism, beginning with " A Catholic response to the sentencing of Saddam" (Dec. 28, 2006), being in part a rebuttal to Jimmy Akin's criticism of Cardinal Martino (November 09, 2006). In his original criticism of Cardinal Martino, Jimmy Akin asserts that "The death penalty is not a crime legally, nor is it one in principle morally," and that "even if we assume that "killing for vindication" is a crime -- an assumption that can be subject to extreme challenge -- it does not follow that Saddam's execution is simply killing for vindication." Michael disagrees, and charges Jimmy with "negligence" in presenting the Church's teaching on the issue:Akin . . . neglected to note the important fact that clear and crisp sections of John Paul II's Evangelium vitae were interpolated into the 1997 Latin ed...
