Indira Vikas Patra Is Not A Capital Asset!
2009-08-02 07:00:00 In decision delivered dated 3 April 2009 ,Kerala High Court in case of Dr R. V.Patel vs CIT decided that Indira Vikas Patra is not a capital asset , therefore, maturity proceeds paid by post office is not consideration for transfer of capital asset. As such there can not be capital gains . Read the excerpts The specific contention raised by the assessee is that IVP is a capital asset and therefore interest accrued is profit assessable as capital gains. The Tribunal rejected the claim by holding that IVP is nothing but a deposit with the Post Office which entitles die assessee to a specific rate of interest on compoundable basis and assessee can encash the deposit only for the maturity value which is pre-determined. The assessee has relied on several Courts' decisions for the proposition that IVP is a capital asset. IVP is admittedly a deposit scheme framed by the Government of India for making deposits in the Post Offices. Purchase of IVP amounts to depositing a specific a...

2009-07-14 13:00:00 Gov. Pat Quinn finally signed the $31 billion capital spending bill, with about $900 million set aside for the CTA. It's the first real state capital spending law in 10 years. A total of $2.7 billion will fund (pdf) all Chicago-area public transit over five years, including Metra and Pace. "leveraging up to $2.7 billion in additional federal funds, according to the Illinois Jobs Now Web site.I haven't been yet able to find an updated account of how the dollars would be allocated among projects. Inventus Capital to Fund Redbus.in
2009-07-07 08:45:00 We’ve blogged about redbus.in earlier, and kept you updated on redbus.in and other developments in the non-air travel ticketing sector. Redbus.in is a travel-based startup by young entrepreneurs from BITS-Pilani. Networking with travel-agents and bus service providers across the country, Redbus.in revolutionised bus booking facilities, with Redbus.in offering options to book via credit card or cash, online or offline, among others. Booking via SMS and GPRS has also been introduced. In a recent interview posted on chubbybrain.com, the CEO, Phanindra Sama said that they also aim to target non-Internet users. They do this by providing technology support to bus-ticketing operators who manage heavy volumes. They provide inventory-management SaaS (Software as a Service) to such operators and take a cut on the larger transactions. Pilani Soft Labs Pvt Ltd, the company behind bus ticketing service redBus, has raised second round of funding led by Inventus Capital Partners. Seedfund, ...

Venture Capital Beliefs & Views On Indian Internet Space - (Must Read F
2009-06-10 14:49:00 We had the good fortune of listening to a presentation by Ritesh Banglani from IDG Ventures India at the recently held Startup City event in Bangalore. He pointed out the assumptions and beliefs that their VC firm had on the Indian Internet space. We quite enjoyed the presentation and are sharing his points here. A must read for any internet entrepreneur looking to pitch to a VC. 1) Average monetization per user is 1$ - As a VC they believe that the average per user monetization per year is 1$. Hence they look for companies which can prove that they earn substantially higher per user revenues for them to be interested in investing in the startup. 2) Ad only models dont work - VC’s (IDG ventures in this case) firmly believe that business models online which are supported by purely advertising don’t work. Their assumption is based on the above point of 1$ per user which they feel is too low to support the scaling costs of an online startup with millions of users. 3) E- Co...

Shanghai As World Financial Capital? Maybe Next Century.
2009-05-31 17:59:00 Just finished a fascinating article in Atlantic by Richard Florida, entitled, "How The Crash Will Reshape America." It makes some very interesting points as to why Phoenix and Las Vegas (and large swaths of Florida) may never recover and why New York, Austin, and Seattle (yeah), will do just fine. But within it, and of great relevance to this blog, is a section on why New York will remain as the world's financial capital and why, despite the projected growth of Asia's economies, we should not expect Shanghai, Hong Kong, or anywhere else to usurp it. At least not for an exceedingly long time. At first glance, few American cities would seem to be more obviously threatened by the crash than New York. The city shed almost 17,000 jobs in the financial industry alone from October 2007 to October 2008, and Wall Street as we’ve known it has ceased to exist. “Farewell Wall Street, hello Pudong?†begins a recent article by Marcus Gee in the Toronto Globe and Mail, outlining the po...

2009-05-19 15:19:00 There are a lot of solutions for funding a business beyond dipping into your own personal savings and acquiring venture capital which can not only be difficult but also compromise the amount of control you retain over your enterprise. There are incubator and accelerator programs popping up all over the country. Brian Cork’s Accelerator program and Shotput Ventures are just two examples here in the Atlanta area… Jeff Hilimire of Shotput Ventures will be on Gravity Free Radio this morning and Brian Cork was on earlier this year talking about their programs. Stone Street Capital Mascot Resembles Which Teletubby? CAST NOW!
2009-03-23 16:39:00 Showing its sensitive side Cash Now Pusher Stone Street Capital says: "Some people are critical of annuitants who choose to solve their financial problems by selling some of their structured settlement payments. This criticism is unfair; we should admire those who recognize that they need help with their financial situations, and are responsible enough to realize it’s time to ask for help instead of keeping creditors in limbo and continuing to get into more and more debt. The secondary market’s goal is to tailor each transaction to the annuitant’s specific needs and, in turn, put them into a better financial situation when their transaction is completed".Generally the criticism is of the cash now pushers not the annuitants. Meanwhile a playful diversion. First check out Stone Street Capital's web site and take at look at it's goofy Blue "Cash Cow". The Future of Venture Capital Funding in High Tech
2009-03-03 01:44:00 Like almost every aspect of the current economy, Venture Capital Fundings of High Tech and Software startups are way down. There is pressure on virtually every segment of our economy, and the worldwide financial system is in by far the greatest disarray of our lifetime. The preferred exit strategy for Venture Capitalists, the IPO, pretty much shut down quite a while back. Financial returns at Venture funds have taken a hit like everything else financial, and VCs are definitely not in good position to attract new capital in the near term--given the current frantic flight to quality by investors. Things look dire in the VC business. There are even suggestions by many people, including some prominent VCs, that the long running and revered Venture Capital business model is "broken", and that it will cease to exist as we now know it.So what really is going to happen? Is the end of the world near? (well?maybe, based on the news headlines every day). Will a software or technology entreprene...

The Venture Capital Fund Structure
2009-02-19 23:55:00 Private Equity funds (including Venture Capital funds) are largely structured under a “2 and 20″ business model. This will run through a quick example about how it works from the Limited Parter and General Partner perspective. Limited Partner (LP): Invest money in the fund and include: pensions, investment managers, high-net worth individuals, etc. General Parter (GP): Select companies for investment and manage the portfolio until exit is realized (IPO, strategic sale, recapitalization) The 2/20 model says that the GPs receive a 2% management fee on committed capital (in this case, $100m) and 20% of any realized capital gains. The LPs, on the other hand, invest $100m into the fund and receive their initial investment plus 80% of the gains. These percentages can change, but they are fairly standard in the industry. The management fee is used to keep the lights on and pay salaries (supposedly) and the “carry” or 20% gains is the profit share. Now, in our exa...

Collapse of the Capital Markets.
2009-01-30 04:02:00 Image by wallyg via FlickrOver the past six-eight years the MildGreens have often made the claim that were illicit drugs to be globally legally regulated, the capital markets would collapse. (cf: Narcodollars for Dummies, introduced to NZ's SCOOP by the MildGreens). While our comment was aimed at the fiscal risk created by pump and dump when black money is laundered, the destabilised banking markets we see today are inseparable. In a ringing endorsement of that claim the following headline substantially agrees.U.N. crime chief says drug money flowed into banksReutersSunday, January 25, 2009VIENNA: The United Nations' crime and drug watchdog has indications that money made in illicit drug trade has been used to keep banks afloat in the global financial crisis, its head was quoted as saying on Sunday.Vienna-based UNODC Executive Director Antonio Maria Costa said in an interview released by Austrian weekly Profil that drug money often became the only available capital when the crisis...

Crisis Investing - A Three-Pronged Working Capital Model (WCM) Strategy: Pe
2009-01-23 03:36:00 One of the great things about being a professional investor is the opportunity one has to apply his or her long-term experience to the investment environment that is unfolding (or coming unglued) in the present. If nothing else, most successful investors develop a consistent strategy that allows them to take advantage of short-term changes and the opportunities that they create in a somewhat unemotional manner. You can always tell a "newbie" by a "let's see how you do for a year" comment, or a "what's hot" question.Wall Street would like us to ignore the fact that the stock market is a cyclical beast that changes direction periodically, and almost never at the turn of a calendar quarter or year--- cycles vary in length, breadth, and direction. Inevitably, less experienced investors get caught with their portfolio egos unprepared for market realities.Similarly, Wall Street would like investors to look at income securities (bonds, CEFs, preferred stocks, etc.) with the same analytica...

The Investment Gods Are Angry- Working Capital Model (WCM)
2009-01-12 17:46:00 The Working Capital Model (WCM) is an historically new methodology, but with roots deeply imbedded in the building blocks of capitalism, and financial psychology--- if there actually is such a thing. The earliest forms of capitalism sprung from ancient Roman mercantilism, which involved the production of goods and their distribution to people or countries around the Mediterranean. The sole purpose of the exercise was profit and the most successful traders quickly produced more profits than they needed for their own consumption. The excess cash needed a home, and a wide variety of early entrepreneurial types were quick to propose ventures for the rudimentary rich to consider. There were no income taxes, and governments actually supported commercial activities. The investment gods saw this developing enterprise and thought it good. Working Capital Model Investing? Investing Rules Of Engagement-The QDI
2009-01-03 15:00:00 Crash! The 2007 thru 2008 financial crisis halved 401(k), IRA, and Mutual Fund values in a matter of months. For many, retirement dates had to be pushed back; for others, new jobs had to be found. The tragic flaw? No income allocation in the investment program. Market value builds egos; income pays the bills.Few employers cautioned Savings Plan participants that 401(k)s are just not defined benefit programs. Few mutual fund distributors suggested to benefit departments that their programs were missing something of critical importance.Throughout the meltdown, all investment securities fell in market value. But the vast majority of income securities, including closed end income funds (CEFs), have continued to pay interest and dividends. Market value builds over-confidence; income pays the bills. The Working Capital Model (WCM) is a comprehensive system for investment management that is based on uncompromising rules of engagement. The investor's focus must remain centered on the develo...

What Will Obama Do With Capital Gains Taxes?
2008-12-18 00:43:00 Dow Jones Newswire reports that President-elect Obama's plans include:Exempting seniors earning less than $50,000 from income tax.Increase the top two marginal tax rates from their current levels of 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent, respectively. Based on 2009 income thresholds, that would result in a tax increase on singles making $171,550 or more and married couples making $208,850 or more.Taxpayers in those brackets also face increased taxes because President-elect Obama plans to restore phase-outs of personal exemptions and itemized deductions. This means that high-earners would not only face higher tax rates, but they would also lose some or all of their personal exemptions and itemized deductions.Obama has also proposed raising the tax rate on capital gains income from 15 percent to 20 percent for single taxpayers making more than $200,000 and for married couples earning more than $250,000 annually.Of course, nothing is set in stone yet and some of the...
