Al Gore?s carbon footprint
2008-06-10 17:24:00
Tuesday 10: Being thankful can sometimes feel like pandering to some capricious deity. Yet I am thankful, often, and, often for intangible blessings. Like inner strength. Life is reasonably good for me, but then my satisfaction levels have always been set rather high. All the more reason to be thankful that life?s challenges never reduced ...

Was Fred Flintstone's carbon footprint small enough for Portland?
2008-06-03 16:50:00
We got another goofball flyer from Sam the Tram and Transportation Sue yesterday, telling us about our "options" in getting from Point A to Point B. We don't know how much the City of Portland is paying people to create these glossy mailers, but whoever it is must not get paid enough for any new ideas. Here's the cover photo on the latest one: Here's the cover photo on the one we got last fall: Hey, Sam, that's pretty shallow, even for you. Give it a rest. But after drying our eyes from that belly laugh, we opened the four-page brochure to behold a sight that stopped our heart. For years, we have been searching for that single image that epitomizes the arrogance of the Portland city government. Today it arrived. Maybe some day something better than this will come along, but for now, this picture is worth a thousand words: Yes, there you have it. When it comes to delivering transportation services to its residents and visitors, Portland says, "Get off your butt a...
Data Centres Set to Overtake The Aviation Industry?s Carbon Footprint
2008-06-02 22:49:00
Tideway Systems – It?s often hard for people outside of the slightly specialised world of Distributed Computing and Data Centres to get their heads around quite how critical and complex they have become. So I was it was a bittersweet moment to find this article in the Economist last week. Buy our stuff, save the planet. My shoes don't fit my carbon footprint
2008-05-27 04:09:00
Yeah. When I was in 7th grade, I competed in a smarty pants team sport -- Creative Problem Solving. Instead of scoring goals, we won "creative points" working in teams to solve the world's problems. Our team rocked -- a super nerdy scientist-type, a whiz kid literature quoter, the pop culture guru, and me -- the freak artist. We won several competitions (and cool ass multi-tiered trophies), going to state the final year we competed.Oh yeah, we were that cool. The issue we worked with in 7th grade was global warming. I remember being completely repulsed by the deforestation of Brazil by American companies like McDonald's. I was amazed by how the ice shelf was melting, how the food chain has been disrupted, and how people were causing chaos in the natural world.I was amazed, repulsed, and creatively solving the problem. In my team. For a trophy.I have to admit, my concern did not make a huge impact on my life at the time. It took about 20 years to sink in and Al Gore to poke me before ...

Intended to inspire an awareness of and an appreciation for  the Earth's environment, Earth Day is celebrated today at it has been each April for the past thirty eight years.  A grassroots campaign initiated back then served as a wake up call of sorts to help people to realize the impact of our actions on the planet and give the environment a national spotlight.  A movement was born and today Earth Day is celebrated not only in America but in countries all over the world.  But are we really doing right by our dear Mother Earth?People take to the streets celebrating, organizing rallies, staged marches on political institutions, speeches, concerts and festivals.  One can don their favorite "Be Nice to Your Mother" t-shirt pack up the ice chest and Styrofoam plates with plastic sporks, maybe even the hibachi, and head off to the park with thousands of other like minded enlightened to listen to your favorite bands perform their favorite tunes at ear bleed...

Biofuels: A Threat and a Cause of World Hunger
2008-04-13 20:37:00
Cross-posted by Maggie at Maggie's NotebookIn an op-ed dated April 10th, the The New York Times says that the world is getting hungrier because corn, wheat and soy prices are through the roof.Last year, the food import bill of developing countries rose by 25 percent as food prices rose to levels not seen in a generation.Corn doubled in price over the last two years. Wheat reached its highest price in 28 years....The United States and other developed countries need to step up to the plate. The rise in food prices is partly because of uncontrollable forces ? including rising energy costs and the growth of the middle class in China and India....Now, any country with a growing middle class...well, that's good news, but still yet, the NYT tells us, the problem is that old familiar culprit - the "rich world," which has been arrogant enough to produce biofuels. "...industrial nations are not generous" and "rich countries' energy policies helped create the problem."The unnamed editoriali...

Warning, Carbon Footprint Controversy Ahead
2008-03-27 20:38:00
I'm a regular customer of some years, and am writing to ask you to remove from your website the erroneous information regarding CO2. You have been duped. You think you need to charge people more, just like the eco-conspiracy wants to TAX people more, for CO2 emissions. The Al Gore slide show you refer to in Carbonfree Shipping is pseudo-scientific baloney. Below is a statement, issued March 4th 2008 and signed by nearly 100 leading environmental scientists from around the world, testifying to this fact.

Tools to track your carbon footprint
2008-03-18 11:48:00
This weekend I watched a polemical documentary on the global warming debate called The Great Global Warming Swindle. The makers claimed that the entire man-made global warming debate was a sham and that the whole process was very natural. The theory was that it was nothing more than an attempt by governments and corporations to extract more money out of people through carbon taxes. The documentary was certainly persuasive although I couldn’t help feeling that surely, even if we’re not directly responsible, the amount of CO2 that we produce can’t be helping - or at least is speeding-up the process to an unhealthy extent. Whatever your take on the matter, what can be said with certainty is that it surely can’t hurt to reduce your carbon footprint. Last year I wrote about MakeMeSustainable which is an online project to track your carbon footprint online. However, having had my interest re-stimulated in the debate, I’ve recently discovered a few more sites ...

There seem to be no limits to Radiohead's cultural impact; all the headlines for the name your own price album, the upcoming New Year's concert on Current TV and Johnny Greenwood getting critical aclaim for his soundtrack to the movie of the moment, PT Anderson's "There Will Be Blood". In additon, to all this the band has recently undertaken an audit of its touring practices with the objective of reducing the band's carbon footprint.(the audit can be downloaded here) Here's what they found.Fan travel and consumption made up 86% of the Theatre tour and 97% of the Amphitheatre tour. Of the band’s touring impact – Travel and energy use accounted for 60% (Theatre tour) and ~40% (Amphitheatre tour) International travel accounted for a further 34 – 40% of impacts.Short of no-one coming to see us, we’d like to share with our fans some ways of reducing this – our early research suggests that how you come to our shows can significantly reduce the tour̵...

European scientists have devised an online application to measure how much greenhouse gas people emit from the way they travel, light their homes, choose dinner or watch television."The idea is to help people be aware of the impact that their personal behavior can have," said Antonia Mochan, a spokeswoman for the European Commission, whose scientists came up with the new application. "Climate change seems such a big story, people think 'Where can I start?' This can help," she said. The application, which requires users to input information on their behavior, is available via Web site http://mobgas.jrc.ec.europa.eu- and is free of charge.10 Hot NotebooksMusic NewsOutdoors & Nature Books

Bali Carbon Footprint
2007-11-28 01:10:00
The IPCC Conference on Climate Change is taking place this Dec 3-14 in Bali, Indonesia. The conference will have about 12,000 participants from 189 countries, and since Bali is in the middle of nowhere we can assume that the average participant flies 1/4ths of the Earth's circumference to attend, or about 6,000 miles.Passenger air travel costs 0.18 kg CO2/passenger-mile, for long-distance flights. Of course, many participants will be taking private jets, which will throw this calculation way off.So the total carbon emissions for travel to-and-from the conference are 26 MMT CO2 (million metric tons).by David Appell Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Women reduce carbon footprint by having abortions.
2007-11-27 05:01:00
From Debbie at Right Truth You read that title correctly, women are having abortions to save the planet. I couldn't make this up in my wildest imagination. Women are not just having abortions, but having themselves sterilized permanently. I think these women are CRAZY. What kind of world would this be without HUMANS??? Didn't God make the world FOR his ultimate creation -- mankind? I doubt these women (and men) even have any faith in something higher than themselves. Had Toni Vernelli gone ahead with her pregnancy ten years ago, she would know at first hand what it is like to cradle her own baby, to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel a little hand slipping into hers - and a voice calling her Mummy. But the very thought makes her shudder with horror. Because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief she was helping to save the planet. Desperate measures: Toni Vernelli was steralised at age 27 to reduce her c...
