Carbon sequestering.
2008-06-11 00:00:00
As the country inches towards a renewable energy model which will hopefully wean us from our addiction to oil, the most pressing need will be for more electricity for our plug-in hybrids. But where is that electricity going to come from? Coal - which unfortunately leads to more carbon spewed into the atmosphere unless we find a way to capture it: Capturing carbon from these plants may become a lot more important soon. Emissions from coal-fired power plants already account for about 27 percent of American greenhouse emissions, but as prices for other fuels rise, along with power demand, utilities will burn more coal. And if cars someday run on batteries, a trend that $4-a-gallon gasoline will accelerate, then the utilities will burn even more fuel to generate the electricity to recharge those batteries. It's much easier to control the carbon emitted by a few hundred power plants than from the millions of cars and chimneys cranking out the stuff now. The only problem is that we have...
Al Gore?s carbon footprint

Tuesday 10: Being thankful can sometimes feel like pandering to some capricious deity. Yet I am thankful, often, and, often for intangible blessings. Like inner strength. Life is reasonably good for me, but then my satisfaction levels have always been set rather high. All the more reason to be thankful that life?s challenges never reduced ...

IE partners with American Forests for green Carbon Grove campaign
2008-06-10 01:02:00
Last month, Window's Internet Explorer launched Carbon Grove, a green campaign designed to mobilize internet users to pursue reductions in their personal carbon footprints. Today, we are excited to announce that the campaign is expanding to France, and in partnership with American Forest we are taking steps to make the virtual forest a reality through the planting of up to 250,000 real trees in deforested regions across the globe. Carbon Grove is a carbon footprint reduction reminder service that empowers users to reduce their impact on the environment, and through the use of Windows Internet Explorer 7 with Dynamic Security Protection, users can also help improve the internet environment. Internet Explorer 7 is architected with security features that help defend against malicious software (also known as malware) and better protect against the theft of personal data by fraudulent websites. By participating in Carbon Grove's campaign, internet users nurture a virtual tree seedling...

Was Fred Flintstone's carbon footprint small enough for Portland?
2008-06-03 16:50:00
We got another goofball flyer from Sam the Tram and Transportation Sue yesterday, telling us about our "options" in getting from Point A to Point B. We don't know how much the City of Portland is paying people to create these glossy mailers, but whoever it is must not get paid enough for any new ideas. Here's the cover photo on the latest one: Here's the cover photo on the one we got last fall: Hey, Sam, that's pretty shallow, even for you. Give it a rest. But after drying our eyes from that belly laugh, we opened the four-page brochure to behold a sight that stopped our heart. For years, we have been searching for that single image that epitomizes the arrogance of the Portland city government. Today it arrived. Maybe some day something better than this will come along, but for now, this picture is worth a thousand words: Yes, there you have it. When it comes to delivering transportation services to its residents and visitors, Portland says, "Get off your butt a...

Summer Champ Series at Carbon Poker
2008-06-02 12:22:00
CarbonPoker's inaugural Summer Championships kicked off yesterday . I had meant to post about this poker series over the weekend, but things got a little hectic here around the house and I never found the time to do so. The 30 day schedule has been designed to closely mimic the World Series Of Poker schedule and will feature several championship events, with glory to be had in special tournaments like the Ladies Only, and the Intercontinental and American Championship. This year I notice that all Championship event winners will receive a commemorative chipset and accolade to celebrate the victory. I can tell you that these are some fine chip sets folks, and are of high quality .This years series of events run throughout the month and encompass 33 separate events, followed by the Tournament of Champions $15,000 Jackpot finale. Certain events will award leaderboard points with the players who finish at the top of the leaderboard winning their entry in the Grand Final. However, this...

Graphene set to replace/supplement carbon nanotubes
2008-05-29 05:45:00
In the world of high tech composites and materials carbon nanotubes are the chromed out Cadillac grills of the composite pimp mobile. They do everything from being ultra light to having applications in lubricants. In fact theirs pretty much nothing that carbon nanotube's haven't been seen to be possible to have a great impact on. But the problem is that Carbon Nanotubes are starting to be a possible health problem linked to asbestos like symptoms that affect peoples lungs do the fact the microscopic nanotubes could lodge in peoples lungs causing respiratory problems and other issues like it. Not to mention the fact that carbon nanotubes cost several hundred dollars for a single gram of Carbon Nanotubes. Well it looks like there might be a new kid on the block when it comes to compounds, Graphene based polymer hybrids. The newest Graphene hybrid is developed by Northwestern University and it's biggest draw besides it having most of the benefits of carbon nanotubes, is the fa...
?Every adult in Britain should be forced to carry ?carbon ration cards??
2008-05-29 03:49:00
Control by Carbon. It will hit Great Britain first: Every adult should be forced to use a ‘carbon ration card’ when they pay for petrol, airline tickets or household energy, MPs say. The influential Environmental Audit Committee says a personal carbon trading scheme is the best and fairest way of cutting Britain’s CO2 emissions without penalising the poor. Under the scheme, everyone would be given an annual carbon allowance to use when buying oil, gas, electricity and flights. Anyone who exceeds their entitlement would have to buy top-up credits from individuals who haven’t used up their allowance. The amount paid would be driven by market forces and the deal done through a specialist company. The government decides how much “carbon” you are allowed, and if you exceed the limit, you pay. Is this registering with you yet? This isn’t the first time this idea has been floated out there. In November of last year, the same thing was offer...

Personal Carbon Credits - Are they mad?
2008-05-27 09:21:00
Just when you thought that Labour could not get any more unpopular, up pops the idea of introducing Personal Carbon Credits. I hate this idea on so many levels it's hard to know where to begin. For a start it winds me up when MPs talk about rationing our carbon. Who the hell do they think they are telling us how much fuel we can use? I could understand it if there was a war on and we had a shortage, but this is ridiculous.MPs involved in recommending this madness say it will help fight climate change. I would like to point out that the temperature has actually dropped over the last decade and scientists are now saying it will drop again over the next decade. So do the MPs think that Carbon Rationing will warm the planet up? I'm confused. Then of course there's the cost. Estimated at £2bn to set up (that will be at least £6bn then) and a further £2bn to run each year (again let's call that £6bn). Where is this money going to come from? You guessed it - out of our pockets as bloody...
My shoes don't fit my carbon footprint
2008-05-27 04:09:00
Yeah. When I was in 7th grade, I competed in a smarty pants team sport -- Creative Problem Solving. Instead of scoring goals, we won "creative points" working in teams to solve the world's problems. Our team rocked -- a super nerdy scientist-type, a whiz kid literature quoter, the pop culture guru, and me -- the freak artist. We won several competitions (and cool ass multi-tiered trophies), going to state the final year we competed.Oh yeah, we were that cool. The issue we worked with in 7th grade was global warming. I remember being completely repulsed by the deforestation of Brazil by American companies like McDonald's. I was amazed by how the ice shelf was melting, how the food chain has been disrupted, and how people were causing chaos in the natural world.I was amazed, repulsed, and creatively solving the problem. In my team. For a trophy.I have to admit, my concern did not make a huge impact on my life at the time. It took about 20 years to sink in and Al Gore to poke me before ...

Carbon Nanotubes: the next ?Asbestos??
2008-05-22 14:08:00
The journal Nature has an article about carbon nanotubes, when placed into mice, can cause pleural placques and granulomas of the pleura similar to those seen from asbestos. Carbon nanotubes are structures engineered from single atoms and molecules and scientists say they hold great promise for applications in medicine, electronics and especially new materials. Note: the mice ...

Making Sense of the Voluntary Carbon Market: A Comparison of Carbon Offset
2008-05-20 19:36:00
“Carbon, the currency of a new world order” (Paul Kelly, The Australian, 21 March 2007) Public awareness of the threat of climate change has risen sharply in the last couple of years and an increasing number of businesses, organizations and individuals are looking to minimize their impact on the climate.
The Voluntary Carbon Offset Market
2008-05-19 20:55:00
In December 2006 we launched an inquiry into the voluntary carbon offset market. The voluntary carbon offset market allows companies, public bodies and individuals the opportunity to choose to purchase credits generated from projects that either prevent or reduce an amount of carbon entering the atmosphere, or that capture carbon from the atmosphere.
