Cubs In Haiku: Cubs 6, Cardinals 3
2009-09-21 06:06:00 Cubs salvage a winAvoid sweep in St. LouisJake Fox the heroIt looked like another Cardinal walk off. But Matt Holliday was caught breaking the rules with a wide slide, and the Cubs got a double play to end the ninth inning with the game tied. The Cubs failed to score in the 10th, but Esmailin Caridad got the Cards 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning. Then, in the top of the 11th, Jake Fox hit a 2-run home run to give the Cubs the lead. A "drama-less" 11th for Carlos Marmol let the Cubs leave town with a small bit of pride intact as they avoid getting swept by the Cards. ...

2009-09-20 16:30:00 Cubs tie it in ninth But D-Ro scores winning run More salt in the woundEven though these games count only for bragging rights, there's something maddening about having former Cub Mark DeRosa play a key role once again in a Cardinals victory over the Cubs. This time he singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth - after the Cubs tied the game in the top of the inning - and scored the winning run on a Brendan Ryan single off Cubs "closer" Carlos Marmol. ...

2009-09-19 14:55:00 The only thing leftWas to beat the CardinalsA matter of prideIt started out wellBut couldn't have ended worseHolliday walk offThe Cubs arrived in St. Louis effectively, if not mathematically, without a chance of making the playoffs. But beating the Cardinals would provide a little satisfaction by delaying their division title a few more days. It started out great. Three triples gave the Cubs a two run lead in the first. But a Mark DeRosa triple helped the Cards to tie it in the fifth. Then, another mid-season acquisition, Matt Holliday, gave St. Louis the win on a walk-off home run. It was another loss for our bullpen, this one being charged to Aaron Heilman....

2009-07-11 20:49:00 Another day, another game. I watched the whole thing yesterday and it's already moving to Denial Land. One bright spot was Jeff Stevens, who made his Major League debut and was the only Cubs pitcher to throw a 1-2-3 inning. This was a welcome contrast to what is on his Wikipedia page, which talks about a bad pick-off he made to first during the Olympics which eventually led to the winning Korean run....
The Cardinals Will Kick the Tires on Roy Halladay
2009-07-11 03:35:00 Cardinals sources confirmed to me this afternoon at Wrigley Field that they are interested in acquiring All Star pitcher Roy Halladay from the Toronto Blue Jays. Tonight the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper quotes Cardinals GM John Mozeliak on his interest in kicking the tires on a potential trade for Halladay. Should "Doc" Halladay end up in St. Louis you can print the playoff tickets in the Arch City because that will put them over the top in a very mediocre divisional race. The Cubs are 4 1/2 back after today's loss and unless they can turn things around the rest of the weekend you will find a team 7 1/2 back and fading when the dust settles on the...

2009-05-21 00:55:00 Like drug abuse and DUI convictions, stupid facial hair is part of the long and storied history of the St. Louis Cardinals #$@*%$! So okay, here it is: we aren't hitting much right now, and we have to face Chris Carpenter and that surgically-engineered thing he has in place of his arm. The bad news? It's not good to face Chris Carpenter when he's feeling good. The good news? There's a 95% chance he'll do something else injurious to his arm tonight, and we'll be there to see it. It cuts both ways, people. We're now freakin' TIED with the #*$!#$&@#$@ Cards for second in the NL Central, and 3 games behind Vegetable Lasagna and The New Sausage Revue. And seriously, if you lived in Milwaukee and knew that Prince Fielder was coming up on 2 years of being deprived of meat, would you volunteer to dress up and run around as a giant sausage? I submit that you would not. But I digress. Ryan Dempster (3-2, 4.65) will lead the Cubs into battle against the Cardianls and the owner of sai...
Saturday Game Thread: Chicago Cubs @ St. Louis Cardinals 3:10 pm CT/4:10 ET
2009-04-25 20:02:00 Your 2009 Chicago Cubs Why yes, I DO blame Jim Edmonds. Thank you for asking. Today Sean Marshall (GAK!) will take on some guy named Something Boggs (0-0). Let's hope it's Wade Boggs, and we might actually have a shot at winning a game. Cubs.com has taken to calling this lineup: Theriot Fukudome Soriano Someone Lee Soto Fontenot Johnson Pitcher the "New-Look Cubs," as opposed to the "Medically-Necessary Cubs," and I think we should all follow suit. As opposed to a loss, last night's game shall henceforth be referred to as an "Incomplete Win" and the DL will now be referred to as "Nap Time." Don't you feel better? I know I do. Breaking News: According to Gordon Wittenmeyer, Marmol's MRI revealed a slight sprain in his knee. He's expected to throw Monday and possibly be back by mid-week. Ramirez is no worse than yesterday; he and Bradley will not be placed on Nap Time for now. The game is on FOX today, and, if there is a God (and assuming he's not upset about yesterday's mid-...
Friday Night Game Thread: Chicago Cubs @ St.Louis Cardinals (GULP)
2009-04-25 00:56:00 It's been a long week, kids. Just today I've defended my former arch-enemy, Milton Bradley, been persecuted for my religion, been mauled to within an inch of my life by a tiny kitten trying to escape my black lab, and had to look at Ryan Theriot and his mousquetaire every time I click on the LOHO homepage. Anyone else need a drink?* (*a "drink" of course being any frosty beverage of your choice. we here at LOHO recognize our brothers and sisters who may not be able to partake in drinks of an acoholic nature) After all that, it's difficult to feel truly fired up about this series with the Cardinals. I mean, it's not as if we're playing our best baseball right now. Half our team doesn't seem to be playing any baseball at all, but something more akin to an outdoor version of "Family Feud," wherein the contestests step up to the plate, take their shot at picking the most popular answer before retiring back to the sidelines with the rest of their team. Nevertheless, we here at LO...
Game Thread: Cardinals at Cubs; 2:20 ET/1:20 CT: Let's Get It On!
2009-04-16 18:20:00 Signed, sealed, delivered. After just a week and a half of play, the MLB schedulers are pitting these two rivals together six times in the first month. I, for one, love it. On this past week's podcast, Julie and I discussed how Brewers/Cubs was slowly overtaking Cards/Cubs as the top rivalry, but there's still no love lost here. Plus, St. Louis has been playing some pretty decent ball and I think these two teams will be fighting it out in the Central. Today marks the season starting debut of the Cubs newest No. 5 guy, Sean Marshall. Please don't boo me! Marshall had a great spring, and didn't give up a hit in his two bullpen appearances so far. Overall against the Cardinals, the Big Smooth is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA. For the Cardinals, it's Adam Wainwright, who's 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA. Wainwright has a tendency to get a little wild and this is the new patient Cubs, so there could be some more RBI walks, the most boring play ever, but still runs nonetheless. TYC's Things to Watch ...

Cubs vs. Cardinals Game Thread: 3:55 ET 2:55 CT
2008-09-20 21:16:00 Today could be the day. The Brewers lost last night, so the Magic Number is at 1. All that stands between the Cubs and the playoffs is Joel Piniero and the Cardinals. As Umbra said yesterday, the last time the Cubs had back-to-back postseason appearances was 1907 and 1908. We're watching history happen here, folks. Let's put yesterday's game out of our minds. It doesn't matter. Today could be the day. And if we lose again, well, you can always comfort yourself with a whole bunch of booze. Today's game is on Fox. Or maybe not. You may also get to see Brewers/Reds or Twins/Rays. And you can also watch Gameday cartoons.

2008-09-19 18:00:00 With a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and a Cincinnati victory over the Brewers this evening, the Chicago Cubs could win the division in back-to-back years for the first time in...well, ever. It hasn't happened to the Cubs since baseball went to the division system in 1969. Before this, the Cubs didn't win back-to-back pennants since winning it three times in a row in 1906, 1907, and 1908. That's a long time to not be very good at baseball. So for your convenience, I've created a list of things that happened between 1906 and 1908: Things you didn't Know Happened from 1906 to 1908 1. Albert Einstein develops the theory of relativity, writes it on a napkin. It takes two years to make out all the smudges. 2. President Theodore Roosevelt develops the 'Roosevelt Corollary' that says that only America can invade South American countries without provocation. So shove it, Europe! 3. Henry Ford releases the Model T. It runs o...

2008-09-12 00:15:00 Hadn't seen you in a while. How have things been? Is it possible? Putting together back-to-back wins? It's asking for a lot, I know, but crazier things have happened. As seen above, tonight marks the return of Rich Harden (or, for the girls/GD/carl, An ass accompanied by Rich Harden). This is his first start since August 29, and his "discomfort." Hopefully all is well. Cards counter with former Cub/current dummy Todd Wellemeyer. Of course, this game isn't what is on everyone's mind. After the jump, what everybody is worried about. Should be an interesting weekend.

All this is getting kind of ridiculous, don't you think? It's also a little warming/disheartening/funny/sad- that as the Cubs have lost eight of their last nine, during that same span their magic number has dropped eight games. Lilly/Looper tonight. 2008-08-08 18:30:00 Following a 3-6 start after the All-Star Break, the Chicago Cubs have gone 9-2 in their last 11 games and sit atop the National League Central by 5 games. But in case you were feeling complacent, the Cubs face their hated rival St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon, with Ted Lilly on the mound. Ted does his own pitching and the men that play defense for him, work for him and they are men he knows. Ted makes it his business to be there and see to their work.
