CARICOM-U.S. Initiative to Combat Illicit Trafficking In Small Arms and Lig
2007-12-05 05:28:00
The United States and CARICOM Member States have pledged to enhance regional cooperation to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons in the region.Illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons poses a serious threat to the security of the Western Hemisphere because this thriving black market provides weapons to terrorist groups, drug traffickers, gangs, and other criminal organizations. The US-Caricom Partnership outlined concrete and practical measures they will undertake to address illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons throughout the region. The initiative is a follow-on to the agreement between the CARICOM Foreign Ministers and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on March 22, 2006, which called for cooperation to combat illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons. This commitment was reaffirmed during the US-CARICOM Heads of Government Summit during the June 2007 Conference on the Caribbean in Washington...
Will CARICOM Governments Have To Spend More Money On The Recently Construct
2007-10-11 01:57:00
Recently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) which is the governing body for World Cricket, instituted some changes to the playing conditions, effective 29 September 2007. The BU household, like most West Indians, was concerned about the huge sums of money which the region spent to support CWC 2007. Six months later, we remain steadfast in our view that money which were spent to prepare for CWC 2007 does not match a realistic expectation of returns. The much touted legacy benefits are yet to be realized. We hope, for our children’s sake, that we are wrong and the debt created by CWC 2007 is not recorded as the biggest white elephant the region has ever seen. (more…)
CARICOM Leaders Making Sport At The Health Of Our People~Chronic Non-commun
2007-09-20 12:36:00
In other parts of the world, bullets, the sword, or other forms of violent persuasion are used about as often to interrupt the courses of leaders while leading their countries. But the cynics would once again point out that these same leaders have a track record of leaving Caribbean shores for treatment overseas when personally affected by the CNCDs, while suggesting that their people have access to the “best affordable” health care locally. Caribbean people have become accustomed over the last two decades of promises from our ministers responsible for health of “improved health provision”. The optimists can suggests that a 21-year wait between identifying health areas for priority consideration and finally getting some action is “reasonable”. The weeks, months and years ahead will determine whether the cynics, accustomed to the No Action Talk Only (NATO) approach by our ministers responsible for health to many health issues that wreak havoc in ou...
Canada And The Caribbean Community (Caricom) In New Economic Deal
2007-07-23 03:41:00
Canada, Caricom in new economic deal: By RICKEY SINGH, The Jamaica Observer - BRIDGETOWN, Barbados ? A new "economic partnership" is in the works between Canada and the Caribbean Community (Caricom) which could effectively replace the expiring one-way free trade pact known as CaribCan. That was the essential message sent at a news conference yesterday morning shared by visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Barbados' Prime Minister, and current Caricom chairman Owen Arthur. Speaking to the media at the Sherbourne Conference Centre ahead of a working lunch meeting with Arthur and other Caricom leaders, including Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, who arrived between Wednesday and yesterday morning, Prime Minister Harper admitted to "a period of neglect" by his country to the Caribbean. He said Canada was now looking forward to bringing a more meaningful dimension to a "shared commitment for a new economic partnership" which he had the opportunity to discuss...

CARICOM Chair Says Bahamas Could Still Play Role In CSME: By Candia Dames - BRIDGETOWN, Barbados ? Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meeting here this week are expected to receive a special report which could serve as the roadmap for the implementation of a Single Economy in the region. While Bahamian government officials are sitting in on meetings in this regard, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham - who is absent from the conference - has already made it clear that The Bahamas has no interest in the Single Economy or the Single Market, which was established in the region last year. Barbados Prime Minister Owen Arthur, chair of CARICOM, said that after an unprecedented process of consultations involving all the relevant stakeholders across the region, heads should approve the report of the special taskforce: "Towards A Single Economy and a Single Development Vision." The plan is to have the Single Economy fully operational by 2015. "The creation of a Single E...

CARICOM Leaders Drew The Line In The Sand On Cuba and Venezuela At Their Re

CARICOM Draws Its Line In The Sand On Cuba and Venezuela: By Tameka Lundy - Nassau, Bahamas: Make not mistake about it. While CARICOM leaders were courting a mature relationship with the United States, they were determined to hold fast to their collective dignities and sovereignty, according to several Heads of Government who met with US President George Bush. For instance, despite the US being on the other side of the fence on the matter of Cuba and Venezuela, Caribbean Community leaders said they made it quite clear at that recent meeting that they were not prepared to acquiesce to that nation?s subtleties on the issue. Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham was also in the meeting with President Bush last week in Washington DC. "We made it clear to them that we are not anybody?s stooge," said Dominica?s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerit. "We are not bribed in any way by any government of the world and we are principled leaders representing the interest of principled citizens a...

Hardt Reports On ?Successful? CARICOM/US Conference: By Kendea Jones - Nassau, Bahamas: Charge D?Affaires at the U.S. Embassy Dr. Brent Hardt said on Friday that last week?s meeting of CARICOM countries and the United States was successful because it focused on the people and how to improve the relationship among the countries. "I was amazed at the turnout for the conference," Dr. Hardt said at a press conference at the embassy in Nassau. "I think it exceeded the expectations that everybody had. It was a unique event in the sense that unlike a lot of summits where you have a government organizing a government to government event, the focus here was on people." Among some of the topics discussed at the conference were the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, OPBAT, health, immigration and education. "Altogether the meetings were very, very positive and very constructive," Dr. Hardt said. While noting that the Bahamas government is not willing to join the CARICOM Single Market an...

CARICOM Continues To Fail The People Of The Caribbean

CARICOM Secretary-General, Edwin Carrington Caricom blasts Suriname’s atomic plans Suriname’s proposed construction of a nuclear power facility has continued to come in for fierce criticism. The move could also split members of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) which has traditionally opposed the passage of nuclear waste through its waters. A ground-breaking ceremony for the smelter and power plant, estimated to cost ($30 million), is reportedly scheduled for August this year. However, up to two weeks ago the issue had not been raised at the level of Caricom. Caricom Secretary-General, Edwin Carrington, said that like many other persons, he had read about the Dutch-speaking country’s plans in the media. He added that it had not been discussed at the level of Caricom, nor had anyone brought it to the attention of the 15-state grouping, of which Suriname became a member in 1995. As such, he was not able to comment further. Caricom has, over the years, consisten...

Caricom allegedly has an agency for handling security matters, it's known as IMPACS: The Implementation Agency for Crime and Security {Ed's Note: With IMPACS breakdown of its acronym, instead of FOR I'd've used AGAINST, as I would not want some sarcastic wag like yours truly sallying forth some pithy comments in light of Woolmer's strangulation}the head of that particular arm of the regional grouping is Leonard Robertson based in Port Of Spain, and he issued a statement in light of Bob Woolmer's hit-contract....We of the Caribbean Community deeply regret the death of Mr. Robert Woolmer and the tragic circumstances surrounding it. We extend our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Woolmer and her family at this most difficult time. This is a loss that has been felt by the entire world of cricket and by the Pakistan cricket team in particular. We fully support the Jamaican authorities in their investigation of this tragic death and we are confident that they will do everything in their p...
