Who Would You Rather Have - Carlos Gomez or Derek Jeter
2008-05-14 11:10:00 If Carlos Gomez, Why Not Derek Jeter. - FakeTeamsThe link above is to a post at Fake Teams showing a variety of full-time hitters who have walked as much or less than Carlos Gomez of Minnesota. Included is a poll about who is preferrable to own between Gomez and Derek Jeter, a hitter with the same number of walks (5).Surprisingly, Carlos Gomez is the current leader amongst the voters. I think there is a case there but was surprised to see Jeter doing so poorly nonetheless.Do you agree?

Baseball Notebook: Carlos Gomez Hits For Cycle
2008-05-09 00:45:00 Carlos Gomez became the first person in 22 years to hit for the cycle as a member of the Twins. Carlos Gomez started his game with the Chicago White Sox with one homer and 8 RBI's in 111 at bats, but last night he became the first Twin to hit for the cycle since 1986 when Kirby Puckett

Carlos Gomez: Is His OBP A Threat To His Playing Time?
2008-05-03 15:44:00 Minnesota Twins' CF Carlos Gomez left yesterday's game after being hit in the helmet by Ivan Rodriguez' throw to second base on Gomez' second successful swipe of that bag in the game. That is worth noting. Gomez is so good at swiping bases that he ran on the vaunted arm of Ivan Rodriguez twice. Unfortunately, Gomez is not an OBP type of player and that will always leave him on the cusp of being demoted according to most baseball analysts. His slash stat line is 272/299/379, and the aggregate American league CF has one of 275/348/444. That certainly gives more than enough justification to think he could be sent down. In addition to the Twins' commitment to him, the team itself doesn't take pitches anyhow. The Twins are last in the AL with a .311 OBP and 26th in the majors. (ed: How about four NL teams with a worse OBP than that!) The team's AVG is .266 (5th/10th) and its SLG is .373 (11th/25th). Within the team context, Carlos Go...

Carlos Gomez, Francisco Liriano, Greg Smith And Other Fantasy Notes
2008-04-25 15:06:00 A day after being sat to catcher "a breather", Twins' CF Calros Gomez lead-off the game with his first HR of the season and followed-up with a single in his next AB. Any fear he would be sent down when Michael Cuddyer was activated was allayed, Denard Span was sent back to AAA after yesterday's loss. FWIW, Span acquitted himself nicely with a .258 AVG and three SB. This should keep him on the AAA-to-Majors express for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, SP Francisco Liriano didn't take advantage of the one-run lead Gomez gave him to start the game. Without making it out of the 1st, Liriano allowed six earned runs before being removed for Brian Bass. This outing will likely result in Liriano being sent to the minors. * On the winning side, rookie LHP Greg Smith tossed seven innings of two-run ball for his 2nd win of the season. So far, he has pitched 25 innings allowing 21 hits and walking eight while striking out 16. He is a pitche...

Carlos Gomez And Other Fantasy Notes From Opening Day
2008-04-01 16:48:00 Carlos Gomez was electric last night in the season opener for the Minnesota Twins. He lead-off with a double down the left field line and scored on Joe Mauers single. He bunted for a single in his next AB and easily stole second on a pitchout. His third AB resulted in a walk and another stolen base on a high pitch. After being moved over by a 4-3 groundout by Joe Mauer, he scored on an infield-in single by Michael Cuddyer. A walk and a bunt single? If he does either with regular frequency this season, he is going to be much, much better than anyone thought possible. To boot, he chased down a sure double by Gary Matthews Jr at the RRCF wall. Matthews did not look too pleased. Here is the clip. Judge for yourself. Gomez looks like he is playing at a differen speed. In other Opening Day news: Michael Bourn went 1-3 with a BB and two SB. Jake Peavy and Johan Santana turned in Opening Day gems. Both picked-up Wins. Peav...

Carlos Gomez Is On the Run
2008-04-01 08:26:00 In need of speed? Carlos Gomez played a vital role for the Twins on the same day that Johan Santana starred for the Mets. The centerfielder traded in the off-season blockbuster went 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 stolen bases. He also drew a walk and struck out once. While the stolen bases were part of the team-wide strategy to take advantage of offensive-minded catcher Mike Napoli behind the plate for...

Carlos Gomez (OF-MIN)
2008-03-27 00:06:00 Gomez left today’s exhibition game in the fifth inning with a left hamstring cramp. He ran down and caught a deep fly ball deep in left-center field; afterwards he remained hunched over and grabbed his left leg. He walked off the field, but he had a slight limp and was clutching his leg.

Is Carlos Gomez the next Crawford or the next Gathright?
2008-03-20 00:37:00 Owners seek out category specialists at the end of the draft like drunks seek out women at a bar nearing closing time. All standards are out the window, and the only thing pondered is whether she looks disease-free enough to take home. If it’s a particularly good night, she doesn’t have a snaggletooth. Fantasy Odds: Jeff Baker, Carlos Gomez, Jarrod Saltalamacchia
2008-02-27 19:16:00 Rocky Mountain News reports converting-to-2B Jeff Baker has already emerged as the main competition for Jayson Nix at 2B. I can't help thinking this was the Rockies' hope all along. How can Baker have already surpassed Marcus Giles and Ian Stewart if the organization wasn't already predisposed to having Baker win the job? Recall Jeff Baker was a SS at Clemson University before moving over to 3B for Khalil Greene. I wonder if he wouldn't already be the Rox' 2B if there wasn't such an ingrained progression for power bats to move to the outfield or 1B when they find themselves blocked at a position? * Two days after selecting Rays' LHP Scott Kazmir with my 6th round selection, he walks off the mound with some elbow issue. My very first thought was, "I should have taken a hitter." I don't know who that hitter should have been, but I know it should have been a hitter. Then I forced myself into some dissonance soothing and reminded myself that missing...

Where Will Carlos Gomez Begin the 2008 Season?
2008-02-04 22:48:00 Almost one week later, baseball pundits are still proferring their opinion that the centerfielder the Minnesota Twins aquired in the Johan Santana trade, Carlos Gomez, won't help them in 2008. I am going to continue to disagree. Carlos Gomez will be the Opening Day starter in CF, and he will produce at least one stat, SB, that will have baseball punditry taking notice. To buttress that position, take a look at the Twins' current depth chart: LF Delmon Young CF ? RF Michael Cuddyer BN Jason Kubel, Craig Monroe One of those bench outfielders will DH. That still doesn't leave a good option to play CF. This brings me to an issue that has not been considered (in addition to the Twins' stated desire to get a CF back in the Santana talks.) The Twins currently have three AAA centerfielders: Carlos Gomez, Denard Span and Jason Pridie. While Pridie appears to be capable of moving to a corner position, Denard Span does not posess any power and would essentiall...

Carlos Gomez Denied Permission For Caribbean Series?
2008-01-28 21:23:00 This Impacto Deportivo article is making the rounds tonight. Here it is in Google Translate. The article says that the Mets probably will not give to permission Carlos Gomez to play in the Caribbean Series. Gomez's family does not seem to expect it, at least. I am not sure if this has trade implications or even counts as abnormal. If any native Spanish speakers are able to glean additional details from the article, please let us know in the comments!

Are Fernando Martinez and Carlos Gomez move available then we think
2008-01-13 23:38:00 I'm beginning to think that the Mets have already surrendered themselves to the idea that they will have to give up both Fernando Martinez and Carlos Gomez in a trade for Johan Santana. Please remember as you read this blog that this is purely speculation on my part, I have no sources and don't claim to have any inside information. This is an op-ed blog from one fans point of view, I'm just willing to give my prospective on things as a life long Mets fans who reads everything I can find related to the Mets or players I think would improve the Mets. With that said, it appears that Omar is willing to give up both of his prized possessions for the best left handed starter in the league. Two things lead me to believe that the Mets and Twins are simply in negotiations, rather then a contemplation stage. It appears to me that if they can can get the Twins to lessen the demands, great but if not they've already surrendered themselves to the cost of Johan Santana. First is a report out o...

Twins Willing To Trade Garza
2007-11-08 16:48:00 Terry Ryan hung on to his fine corral of young pitchers, and it's hard to find fault with that. However, new GM Bill Smith is open to dealing one of them for a high impact young hitter. Specifically, Joe Christensen says the Twins are willing to move 24 year-old Matt Garza, who posted a 3.69 ERA this year. The price would be huge - the names the Twins have in mind are Delmon Young, B.J. Upton, and Carlos Gomez. Upton, a favorite of theirs, seems like the least available of the three. Marc Topkin agrees that a Young-Garza rumor has been floating around. If the Twins want to make a lesser deal, teams have also been asking about Kevin Slowey and Scott Baker. But those two aren't chopped liver, and Rocco Baldelli doesn't seem like enough. The Padres want in on the young pitchers, but aren't willing to give up third baseman Chase Headley. There's also word in Christensen's article that the Twins haven't heard back from Torii Hunter and Ca...

Mets Rumors: A-Rod, Kim, Silva, Kuroda
2007-11-08 16:06:00 Plenty of new hot stove talk involving the Mets. Let's get into it. First off, there's the fact that Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras yesterday. Minaya says he talked to Boras about all the players he represents. Besides Mr. Rodriguez, Eric Gagne, Byung-Hyun Kim, Kenny Rogers, and Kyle Lohse may be considerations for the Mets. Indeed, there is some buzz that the Mets could bring Kim in to compete for a rotation spot. So what about A-Rod? He'd cost the Mets a ton of money, plus the #22 overall pick in the 2008 draft. It sounds like the Mets may hear Boras out as a courtesy, and even put in an offer they feel is reasonable. That number might fall far short of what it will take, as did theirs for Daisuke Matsuzaka and Barry Zito a year ago. That said, Mets insiders aren't afraid of the full retail price of Rodriguez. The top priority remains pitching. Carlos Silva, Tom Glavine, Hiroki Kuroda, and A.J. Burnett are on the radar....

Carlos Gomez Makes Mets Future Bright
2007-06-20 16:15:00 (From MetsLifer.com) It's easy to get down about the Mets right now. We haven't won a series since Paris Hilton was thrown in jail. And it feels like nothing can go right. Player Update: Carlos Gomez
2007-06-13 16:03:00 John Klima at Mets.com, writes about Carlos Gomez and his collision into the outfield wall:Rookie Carlos Gomez said he came out fine after crashing hard at the base of Dodger Stadium's left-field wall in pursuit of a James Loney double Monday night. Gomez, who was back in the lineup Tuesday night, said he had some stiffness in his shoulder, but didn't anticipate it affecting his swing.Gomez, pressed into everyday service with Moises Alou on the disabled list for the foreseeable future, said he has benefited from the veteran players in the Mets clubhouse."A lot of veterans have been teaching me how we play in the big leagues," Gomez said. "There's a big difference from the Minor Leagues. My first week here, I was a little confused. I didn't know how to do things. I watched [Carlos] Beltran. He plays the same position as me. I watched what he does on the field and off the field."

Carlos Gomez
2007-05-14 13:40:00 In what was only a matter of time, the Mets placed leftfielder Moises Alou on the 15-day D.L. with a strained quadriceps. To take his place, the Mets recalled AAA OF Carlos Gomez. In NL-only keeper and non-keeper leagues, Gomez should be picked-up immediately. His calling card is speed - or translated into fantasy-speak, stolen bases. With 135 ABs and a .360 OBP, he stole 17. In 2006, he stole 41 bases in 50 attempts at AA Binghampton while improving upon his 2005 OPS by 66 points to .773. This was done after skipping from Low A to AA. FWIW, he stole 64 bases in 2005. Because he does not have the name recognition of fellow propsect Lastings Milledge, he is likely to be available in the free agent pool. Do not allow your leaguemates the chance to learn more about him.
