Spring Training 2011 Mega Preview: Carlos Zambrano
2011-03-16 03:22:00 I assure you it is only by accident that I have written three articles about a Cubs player named Carlos. Pity Carlos Pena, who is like an Oreo frosting of sanity smooshed between two chocolate cookies of loco el crazio that is Carlos "too fat to fail" Pena and Carlos "ME GRITAN COSAS LOCAS EN ESPAĆOL" Zambrano. Speaking of the Crazed Rambler......
Carlos Silva does his best Carlos Zambrano Impression
2011-03-02 22:55:00 Apparently, Carlos Silva didn't get the memo. After Carlos Zambrano got suspended and nearly sabotaged his career for fighting with teammates over their play on the field, the Chicago Tribune reports that Carlos Silva was involved in a dugout scuffle after the Cubs committed 3 errrors leading to 6 first inning runs.Carlos Silva is no lock to make this team and maybe he's feeling the pressure, but he didn't do himself any favors by taking out his frustrations on his teammates. The Cubs seem more than willing to take a chance on youngsters for the open spots in the rotation and Silva's behavior won't resonate well on a team that has grown tired of teammate Zambrano's shenanigans over the years.Pitchers...
The Chicago Cubs Should Trade Carlos Zambrano... And Might Be Able To!
2010-12-14 06:55:00 If you went to bed early on Monday night, you missed a number of pretty major pieces of sports news. The Baltimore Ravens blew a 21-point lead in Houston, but took an interception back for a touchdown to win in overtime. The Chicago Blackhawks lost one of the most ugly, pathetic all-around (lack of) efforts in recent memory in Denver. Derrick Rose has a sprained ankle and wrist, but the Bulls can't lose. And Cliff Lee reportedly turned down somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million to go back to the Philadelphia Phillies. Yes, you read that correctly. A professional athlete turned down $50 million. But this might create the best opportunity for the Chicago Cubs in years to correct a...
Ozzie Wasn't Kidding: Dinner with Carlos Zambrano Last Night
2010-06-26 17:30:00 White Sox manager wasn't kidding when he was talking about having dinner with Carlos Zambrano last night. Check out this tweet: Good luck to the Cubs in trying to deal Zambrano. It's not going to happen unless they eat about 80% of his contract or take on some awful contract in its place.h/t: Wow: Carlos Zambrano Really Did Have Dinner With Ozzie Guillen Last Night [Bleacher Nation]...
Carlos Zambrano Meltdown Video
2010-06-26 17:20:00 Since MLB hasn't yet figured out new media and how it can help promote their sport for free, there's no telling how long this video will be available. But here is the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano meltdown video. The most recent one....
Carlos Zambrano Is Untouchable As Any Chicago Cub.....
2009-12-30 17:48:00 Checked out this article in today's New York Post from Joel Sherman (twitter.com/nyp_joelsherman).- Near the end of the article, Sherman talks about a Carlos Zambrano rumor and if it could be a possible trade idea for the New York Mets. "The Mets determined a power bat was their number one quest this off season, but that should have paled to finding a high-end compliment to Johan Santana. Two AL officials say the Cubs are definitely dangling Carlos Zambrano, who has three years at $53.75 million left. The same officials say Zambrano, for comfort reasons, has no desire to waive his no-trade clause and leave Chicago. But in Santana, Francisco Rodriguez and Kelvim Escobar, the Mets have three pitching friends from...

Zambrano Signs Extension With Cubs [David Stefanini]
2007-08-18 03:24:00 It looks as if one of the biggest names in free agency this upcoming off season has been taken off the market. Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago Cubs have agreed on a 5 year extension worth roughly 91 million dollars. Here is MLB.com with more:Carlos Zambrano's long wait paid off. The Chicago Cubs' talented and emotional ace agreed Friday to a $91.5 million, five-year contract extension that features a 2013 option that could make the deal worth $110.75 million over six seasons. Zambrano skipped a shot at free agency and its lucrative payday to stay with the only club he's ever known. "Not everything is about money, you know," Zambrano said. "I know if I got to free agency there were a lot of things that would come to me and offer me. I feel comfortable here. I feel good here and my family feels good here."http://img68.imageshack.u-s/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5-wj.gif

Cubs Sign Carlos Zambrano To Extension
2007-08-17 16:01:00 According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs have inked Carlos Zambrano to a five-year, $91.5MM contract extension. The deal also has a $19.25MM player option for a sixth year, so you might as well call it 6/111. By waiting, the Cubs cost themselves at least $11.5MM. It's unclear as to whether the original 5/80 deal Zambrano almost signed had a player option. The new contract carries Zambrano through his age 31 season. This is a home team discount, but $18.3MM annually guaranteed is still pretty hefty. The discount is that the Cubs are on the hook for five or six years instead of seven or eight. And sure, Z probably could've gotten $20MM on the open market. The deal would look a lot better for the Cubs if the 2013 option was the club's. As a player option, Zambrano will basically only exercise it if he's in bad shape. I've been back and forth on my opinion of a huge Zambrano extension, kind of like the pitcher's up and down season.&nbs...

Roy Oswalt outpitches Carlos Zambrano as Astros beat Cubs 8-2 to complete s
2007-08-09 05:14:00 Roy Oswalt pitched six shutout innings and Craig Biggio and Lance Berkman hit solo home runs off Carlos Zambrano as the Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. Luke Scott added a two-run triple and Mike Lamb had a two-run double as Houston snapped a four-game losing ...

Zambrano Wants To Sign With Cubs
2007-08-05 19:52:00 Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano says he's ready to sign; the Cubs just need to put a reasonable contract offer in front of him. He'd sacrifice the chance to hit the open market after the season. It appears that five years and $90MM would get the job done. Zambrano would be likely to exceed Barry Zito's 7/126 on the open market, so this is a discount. He'd still be the highest-paid Cub. Back in April, it was five years, $80MM. The Cubs have cost themselves $10MM by waiting, and that amount will continue to increase if Zambrano finishes strong and/or actually gets to free agency. Zambrano has bounced back from a lousy start, and now his numbers are in line with career marks. I have to admit that in May I suggested that even 5/80 was a bad idea for the Cubs. Has Zambrano's performance since then changed my mind? It certainly makes the decision tougher. I don't have a good answer here; it depends on what the Cubs would do with ...

Zambrano Expects To Stay With Cubs
2007-07-17 06:24:00 Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune has some quotes up today from Carlos Zambrano, and they strongly indicate he'll sign a contract extension to stay with the Cubs once the season ends. Specifically, he said there's a "90% chance" he re-signs. Negotiations may not have re-opened, but Z is certainly positive about the situation. The Cubs are likely to pay extra for waiting. Signing Zambrano might put the Cubs in a position to enter 2008 with the exact same rotation they have now - Zambrano, Rich Hill, Ted Lilly, Jason Marquis, and Sean Marshall. That group will almost certainly regress from where it is now, but it still looks like a better than average staff to me. Time to put on my fan cap and speculate about some moves I'd like to see for 2008 (if you hate this sort of thing, just stop reading. No complaints about too much Cubs stuff.) For the catching situation, I'd just turn it over to Geovany Soto and Henry Blanco. They s...

Rosenthal's Latest Video
2007-06-03 08:36:00 Ken Rosenthal reeled off a slew of sweet trade rumors in a couple of videos today, which you can watch at FOXSports. Let's discuss. Rosenthal says the Cubs won't trade Carlos Zambrano unless they fall out of contention or the big righty requests a trade. Rosenthal finds neither scenario likely. He says Zambrano still has a good relationship with Jim Hendry, and the Cubs still intend to sign him. The contract remains on hold. Interesting, but not surprising to see that the Cubs are still veering towards this mistake after what we've seen this year. Lots of good Jermaine Dye stuff from Rosenthal. About ten days ago, the White Sox kicked around the idea of sending Dye to the Yankees for Bobby Abreu. The Yanks covet Dye's right-handed power, and Ozzie loves Abreu, his countryman. Rosenthal says the White Sox like the option of keeping Abreu for $16MM in '08 if they so choose. That option comes with a $2MM buyout attached. ...

Layeth the Smacketh Down... The Cubs Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett
2007-06-02 22:38:00 The Cubs spent $300 million dollars in the acquisition of talent in the off-season and right now, it's looking like a train wreck. In light of Sweet Lou Piniella blowing up and Alfonso Soriano forgetting how to swat homers, it's become a powder keg in Cubbie-world.Friday, 'Big Z', Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett tussled in the Cubs dugout, and Big Z decided to channel "The Rock", Dwayne Johnson. He whooped up on Barrett and sent him to the hospital with six stitches to his lip, along with swelts and bruises. The two men put the incident behind them and were fined. When Lou Piniella left Tampa Bay, he thought his fortunes would be better; however, he's finding out in Chicago, there's a reason why the Cubs are the Cubs...Thanks to the magic of the Internet and Yotube, you can see the action as it is...

Video: Zambrano, Barret in Fist Fight [David Stefanini]
2007-06-02 05:56:00 The Chicago Cubs are a team in complete disarray. The ace of the staff, Carlos Zambrano has done nothing good all year. The good news is, he finally hit his mark; only it was the chin of a teammate.http://img68.imageshac-k.us/my.php?image=amerlegendslo-go5wj.gif

Carlos Zambrano
2007-05-21 17:10:00 The Cubs are going to move their closer, Ryan Dempster, into the starting rotation for a reason that is not yet dislosed. 5th starter Angel Guzman is being moved back to the bullpen after three starts in which he pitched 15.1 innings and allowed six runs, 22 runners and 13 strikeouts. Does this make sense? Ryan Dempster is 9-10 in save opportunites and hasn't started a game since the early part of the 2005 season. He ended up saving 33 games that season and saved 24 last year. None of his starting numbers are more impressive that the small sample of what Guzman has done this season. So I ask why? I am going to guess that there is a pitcher currently in the Cubs' starting rotation who is pitching with an injury that will soon be revealed. If I were a Cubs fan, I'd be too afraid to even contemplate taking a guess who that starter is, but I am not a Cubs' fan. However, I'm not enamored of schadenfreude so much that I want to do it. I...

Rosenthal On Zambrano
2007-05-12 06:01:00 Ken Rosenthal says of Carlos Zambrano: "Imagine him wearing another uniform next season. Barring a sudden, unexpected twist, that's where this is going." He goes on to run through various Zambrano suitors for the upcoming offseason: the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Astros, Angels, Dodgers, and Tigers. Rosenthal throws the Rangers, Orioles, Mariners, and Phillies into the mix as well. Might as well include the Blue Jays on that list as well. As a lifelong Cubs fan, obviously it would be hard for me to see Zambrano depart. The biggest blunder in Cubs history was letting a 27 year-old Greg Maddux become a Brave. Still, I do wonder whether unlike Mad Dog at the time, Z's best years are behind him. His climbing walk rate is scary, and you can't help but question the long-term health prospects for a power pitcher with his mileage. What can we expect from Zambrano's age 27-31 seasons? I really like the Mark Gubicza comparison. Both are bi...

Carlos Zambrano Close To Deal?
2007-03-19 05:15:00 Carrie Muskat of MLB.com quoted Carlos Zambrano today saying the he was "close." Apparently, he meant close to signing a contract extension before Opening Day. This despite Muskat reporting no formal talks between Zambrano's agent and Cubs GM Jim Hendry lately. Opening Day is Big Z's deadline; otherwise he will "wait until after the season when [the Cubs] win the World Series." That'd be something. If that happened the Cubs would probably hand him a blank check.

Carlos Zambrano: Wild Thing
2007-03-08 22:48:02 Carlos Zambrano allowed two unearned runs on two hits over three innings in Wednesday?s win over the A?s. The Cubs ace also walked three and struck out three. Zambrano led the Majors with 115 walks allowed last season, so the wildness is nothing new. At the least, he seems open to exploring ways in which to get his overpowering stuff under control. "I think I was trying to do too much, and my left shoulder was too open," Zambrano said. "I learned from the experience. If you open your shoulder with your fastball ... the other pitches were working good, so you use the other pitches.? If Zambrano is able to cut back on the free passes and subsequently lower his WHIP, then he?s capable of surpassing all other NL starters in production.Source: MLB.com
Cubs To Resume Talks With Carlos Zambrano Today
2007-03-04 10:28:02 According to Carlos Zambrano himself, his agents and Jim Hendry will resume talks about a contract extension today by phone. Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Chicago Sun-Times says the parameters are five years and an AAV between $14.6-18MM. Makes sense, and I imagine a full no-trade would be in there too. Zambrano had a lot to say yesterday, promising a Cy Young for himself a World Series title for Chicago. He later qualified that last one by saying he's "almost sure." As a Cubs fan, I enjoy the bravado. I once attended the 1998 Cubs Convention. That ended up being a playoff season for the Cubs, their first since 1989. I had the privilege of meeting Kevin Tapani. I told him I hoped he'd win 20 games that year (I thus take most of the credit for his career-high 19 wins despite his 4.85 ERA). Tap told me, "it'd be a great season if that happened." It was an appropriate response for a past-his-prime battler. ...
