Tuesday 16: Plans changed. Cancelled. Slept like a rock but the inflammation is still there, and it would be daft to freeze on a railway station or in the meeting hall ? especially since with the latter I would be unable to move. Anyway, there is much still to do. But first the chemist for ...

Captive-bred carnivores less likely to survive if released in the wild
2008-01-21 10:43:00
A new study has found out that captive-born carnivores have a low survival rate if they are released in the wild, with only one in three able to survive.   The study carried out at the University of Exeter, UK, reviewed 45 case studies, involving 17 carnivore species, and found that only 30% of captive animals released survived.   Over half the deaths were caused by humans in incidents such as shootings and car accidents. The animals were also more susceptible to starvation and disease than their wild counterparts and less able to form successful social groups.   According to Kristen Jule, lead author on the paper and University of Exeter PhD student, “Animals in captivity do not usually have the natural behaviours needed for success in the wild. Their lack of hunting skills and their lack of fear towards humans, for example, are major disadvantages.”   “We have suspected for some time that captive born animals fared less well than wild animals...

Carnivore heaven
2007-12-22 08:02:00
Now that we?ve discovered where to get many of the foods we enjoy, we aren?t suffering from the lack of variety nearly as much as we were when we first got here. Now with my latest discovery of farm fresh meat, carnivores have a lot to be jealous about. For about $5, I ...
Prehistoric Sea Monster-Protosphyraena ,8 foot long carnivore
2007-11-10 17:23:00
Protosphyraena ProfileProtosphyraena was a medium-size predatory fish of the Late Cretaceous seas with a long swordlike snout and bladelike teeth positioned to stab fleeing prey. What's more, one of these ancient fish had long, bony pectoral fins with leading edges serrated like saw blades. While the exact purpose of these sawlike fins is a matter of scientific debate, no doubt this fish was armed with lots of potentially offensive weaponry.Fully grown adult Protosphyraena averaged between six and nine feet (two and three meters) long, an unremarkable stature in oceans ruled by mosasaurs and plesiosaurs that grew more than 35 feet (11 meters) long.Complete skeletons of Protosphyraena are rare, which may suggests that either scavengers devoured them or the corpses drifted as they decayed and fell apart. Like some Late Cretaceous sea monsters, Protosphyraenamost likely went extinct 65 million years ago.Fast FactsType: PrehistoricDiet: CarnivoreSize: Length, 8 ft (2.4 m)Protection sta...
A Carnivore With An Appetite For Carbohydrates
2007-10-08 23:05:00
An animal with sharp pointed teeth, designed to kill and tear apart the meat. Jaw muscles strong enough to crack bones and eat those too. An animal with a short digestive tract that is unable to digest plant material. Yes… I?m talking about a dog ? Dogs are classified as carnivores because of their ...

Giraffe 1: Carnivores 0

Alternative title: Don't learn this one from the animals.I saw this entry on the Maggid of Bergenfield and I had to post it here. What a fantastic story!Re'eh: Just Like ChickenThe Society for Exotic Kosher Cuisine met once a year at a local restaurant in Teaneck, usually a steak emporium. Its goal was obvious: the members ate the kosher but unusual. If the Torah allowed it, they wanted to taste it. Many in the community found their objective abhorrent, or at least decadent, but at one thousand dollars a plate, and a large membership, the SEKC raised a lot of money for local charities (appropriately, most of the proceeds went to feed the hungry). In past years, bison, gazelle, and venison (a polite word for deer, or as my son once exclaimed, "Hey! They're eating Bambi!") were popular, if noncontroversial choices. Last year, the theme of their annual banquet was game birds. The SEKC dined on pheasant, goose, partridge, and quail, all considered kosher according to Jewish law. The s...
Vegansexuals : No Sex With Carnivores
2007-08-02 20:18:00
The vegan diet excludes animal products. It also excludes animal by-products. Most vegans shun leather, fur, ivory, snake skin and any other fashion artifact that owes its existence to the killing of an animal. Vegans are very conscientious people when it comes to their values. They are also, according to a recent report, beginning to sign-off on sex with meat eaters.According to a vegan who volunteered an opinion on the subject, there is something deeply repulsive about engaging in sexual activity with someone who eats "dead bodies". Others voiced similar opinions about the hazards of getting it on with with people "whose bodies are made up of dead meat". A female vegan said she just couldn't imagine kissing the lips of someone who regularly chews on chunks of dead animal.Vegansexuals appear oblivious to the fact that vegans themselves own and operate bodies of flesh that are dying by increments. The vegan lifestyle risks becoming a new type of elitism that views their highly spec...

4×4?s and Carnivores
2007-05-29 16:59:00
Don’t get confused but even though cars produce dramatically LESS CO2 than livestock farming, we still need to reduce the amount we use our cars/trucks/planes. Burning fossil fuels produces a number of toxic chemicals that there is no doubt our atmosphere and the air we breathe would be better off without. (Environment Agency - Air Quality and Emissions) But according to ...

Carnivores @ The Kibble Palace
2007-04-14 04:30:00
These set of flower & plant photos are quite different from the previous ones.. Most of them have strange looking flower-like and hair-like structure which actually give them the ability to adapt to low nutritional habitat.. u might not be able to recognize most of them.. but these are carnivorous plants that devour insects in their deadly "traps"..Sundew aliciae from S. Africa - It does look quite big in this photo.. but its actual size is just a "wee" bit thicker than our hair.. these curly hairs are one of deadliest to flies..Flowers of the Yellow pitcher plant..Sarracenia flava - Yellow pitcher plant.. A good fly catcher.. ever wonder if its in giant size & you are the one that drop into the plant?!Sarracenia courtil - Red coloured trumpet pitcher's flowers..So, how am I gonna adapt to the working in an hospital after graduation? Will i be able to evolve like a pitcher plant and turn into a carnivore?!!p/s: photos taken in The Kibble Palace @ Glasgow Botanical Gardens
Cats are carnivores, and their digestive systems need plant
2007-01-16 21:45:01
Cats are carnivores, and their digestive systems need plant fiber, too, yet most commercial cat foods contain minimal amounts of meats and veggies. The average cat eats 10 to 20 small meals a day. That could keep you quite busy in the kitchen! Sauteed Liver for CatsHeat 1 teaspoon corn oil in a pan.Add 1/4 pound beef liver and fry on both sides until cooked but not dry inside. Add 1/2 cup water to the pan and mix it up with all the brown bits. Grind the liver in a blender, using the pan juices.Breakfast for Cats1 Tbsp. nonfat dry milk3 medium eggs3 Tbsp. cottage cheese2 Tbsp. grated veggiesMix together the milk powder with a small amount of water; add the eggs and beat well. Pour into a small non-stick frying pan and cook on medium low until done. Flip over and spread the cottage cheese and veggies over half the top. Fold like an omlet. Cool and cut to bite-sized pieces to serve.
