That's why there are loud protests over the owner's plans to tear it down.During the 70's and early-80's, the pair lived in the home, wrote many of their biggest hits within its walls and it's where Karen had her fatal heart attack. It was even enshrined on the cover of the group's Now and Then album.Unfortunately, it's a tourist attraction for fans when they visit Downey, California and current owners Manuel and Blanca Melendez Parra are a bit tired of the traffic it generates. Amongst my immediate family’s family traditions is the shamelessly white bread Carpenters Christmas Portrait album of 1978. We have heard this tape on a loop so many times that my brother and sisters have alternative lyrics (”It looks like snow and smells like snow”), profound questions (Is there a subversive message in the lyrics “Fill the bowl and roll out the barrel, have ourselves a fling”) and even a little choreography. This is not just a series of Christmas songs. Read this post as pissing off those branches of the Taste Police who would prosecute their Carpenters-loving colleagues.It is a little odd that the same members of the Taste Police who will defend the Carpenters are quite prepared to heap scorn on far edgier acts -- for lacking edge. Let's face it, you can't really screw to the Carpenters ("Song For You" and "This Masquerade" being exceptions), they were mostly a cover act, and fans of the Carpenters are likely to like James Blunt as well.
