Baby Carriers
2008-06-05 06:07:00 I've got a baby strapped to me!I am testing out all the different carriers that have been passed down to me. This is a product review of sorts and so that I can document what works for me.Yesterday I took Micah out to a shopping mall and he was strapped to me with the sarong sling. This traditional method has been given a modern twist! Instead of a piece of cloth to tie baby to your body, this sling now comes in fancy fabric or prints, nicely sewn with pockets and also made with 2 rings for easy fastening.Micah is still a bit too young to be left without any support on the sling. His neck isn't that strong yet so I had to support his neck with one leaving only one hand free. It was tiring after a while and hot! His body heat was making both of us uncomfortable. It is, however the simplest to use among the other carriers I have and most compact.I actually tried the Evenflo Snugli first but Micah didn't seem to like it very much. It was also not snug enough despite it's name! His...

Rural wireless carriers file FCC petition opposing handset exclusivity

Rural carriers complain to FCC about iPhone exclusivity
2008-05-21 19:22:00 Many potential iPhone customers in the US have been irked by Apple’s exclusive deal with AT&T, but that marriage is now coming under pressure from another source: small, rural cellphone providers. At issue is the the fact that AT&T does not offer the iPhone for sale in many rural areas where they only offer roaming service. And, since the exclusive deal prohibits the local cell providers from selling the iPhone, that means that inhabitants of those areas—like much of Vermont, and rural areas in 15 other states—will not be recipients of the iPhone love. So it is that the Rural Cellular Association, a trade group of 80 small rural providers, plans to petition the FCC to look into the legality of exclusive deals such as the one between AT&T and Apple. According to the Wall Street Journal, most of these small carriers serve 500,000 people or fewer, though those numbers do add up. Ars Technica highlights the case in Alaska, where residents had trouble le...

Small Carriers To Petition FCC On Exclusive Deals
2008-05-21 01:31:00 For the many people living outside AT&T's coverage range, they are left to chose between an iPhone with no service or unlocking, the latter of which Apple tries to prevent. They're not the only ones left out in the cold, however. The many small carriers that offer service where AT&T does not are left with no iPhones on their networks, and they're letting the FCC know what they think about it.

Subs vs. carriers — Part 2
2008-04-10 00:33:00 Similarly, neither U.S. policymakers nor the American public realize the vulnerability of giant aircraft carriers to torpedo attacks from modern fast submarines was demonstrated in 1968 when a fast Soviet nuclear-powered attack submarine matched the USS Enterprise at top speed in the Pacific Ocean. That moment, vividly and thoroughly discussed in Patrick Tyler’s “Running Critical,” was as epochal a moment in the shift of the strategic balance at sea as Billy Mitchell’s sinking of Ostfriesland. Breast cancer gene carriers? risk ?amplified? by additional genes
2008-03-21 11:22:00 Many women with a faulty breast cancer gene could be at greater risk of the disease due to extra ?risk amplifying? genes, according to research published in this week in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Cancer Research UK scientists, including lead author Professor Doug Easton at the University of Cambridge, have found that common versions of two genes ? FGFR2 and TNRC9 ? known to increase breast cancer risk in the general population - also increase the risk in women carrying damaged versions of the BRCA2 gene. Around one in eighteen women will develop breast cancer by the age of 65. On average, half of women carrying a faulty BRCA2 gene will develop the disease by the age of 70. This study found that particular combinations of the FGFR2 and TNRC9 genes modify the breast cancer risk in BRCA2 mutation carriers. Around twenty percent of the BRCA2 mutation carriers have the lowest risk combination of the FGFR2 and ...

T-Mobile Snubs Nokia's Ovi
2008-03-03 19:30:00 In August of last year, Nokia announced a new service initiative called Ovi. Through this branding and portal, Nokia made plans to offer games, music, mapping, GPS and other services to their phone users. This move would skip right past the network operators who really enjoy cashing checks each month based on those exact services. You see, companies like Verizon and AT&T love to force users to go through them to get access to internet, news, music, and whatever other services they can bottleneck you into. It was only a matter of time before the carriers started fighting back. Word is spreading that T-Mobile is dumping all of the Nokia handsets with Ovi software services. It's not known whether it specifically will affect T-Mobile Germany or if the move is part of a larger worldwide initiative. Not only are they dropping Ovi phones, but it's also being reported that they are offering 10 Nokia handsets in all as opposed to the 15 they offered a month ago.Source: Wirtschaf...

Sprint Quietly Offering $89.99 Unlimited Plan
2008-03-03 15:38:00 With everyone talking about the $99 unlimited plans being offered by the 4 major carriers, Sprint has one-upped the competition. For $10 less than the competition, you can get unlimited voice, messaging, and push to talk use from the #3 carrier. Although it doesn't offer any data use or other goodies such as Sprint TV or GPS navigation, it still bests T-Mobile's unlimited talk/text plan. Will any of the other carriers respond? Do they even need to? T-Mobile is picking up customers left and right where Sprint seems to be losing them at a pretty modest clip.AndroidGuys | The most trusted site for Google Android news and opinion.

Sprint to have WiMAX Phones in 2008
2008-02-29 19:20:00 New CEO, Dan Hesse mentioned yesterday that later this year Sprint will introduce dual-mode CDMA/WiMAX devices. This is a good thing for them as they need to do what they can to be the first company dropping 4G on us. Another great headline in a short span of days for the third ranked company after announcing their Simply Unlimited plan earlier this week. If they end up signing a slew of new customers with their rate plan, they'll need to build up the network to support it and WiMAX sure would help!Kind of ironic to think about #3 doing so poorly and thinking ahead to 4G technology while company #4 keeps reporting better numbers all the time and they have yet to launch their 3G stuff.AndroidGuys | The most trusted site for Google Android news and opinion.

Sprint Answers The Bell
2008-02-28 15:48:00 Sprint has upped the ante in the bidding wars for your cellular business. A week after Verizon and T-Mobile matched their offering for unlimited rate plans, and in T-Mobile's case bested it by offering text as part of the package for $99, Sprint counters by including everything but the kitchen sink. They call it "Simply Everything," which includes Voice, Data, Text, Email, Sprint TV, Sprint Music, GPS navigation, Direct Connect, and Group Connect. A key to the store will also be given to the first 500 customers that sign up. After hemorrhaging another 1.2 million customers the company is pulling out all of the stops in an effort to slow down the bleeding. Now if they could only address their customer service issues.
