2007-11-28 03:36:00 NBC (GE) has decided to go ahead and resume production on "Last Call with Carson Daly," becoming the first network concerning a late-night talk show to do it since the writers strike began. Daly himself isn't a member of the Writers Guild, although that didn't matter to Ellen DeGeneres who has continued taping her show, even though she is a member. So much for solidarity.The network said they'll begin taping new episodes this week, which will begin airing next week; either Monday or Tuesday.What will be interesting to see is if other networks will respond in kind to the move by NBC. If "Last Call" starts to quickly draw viewers to it at the expense of the other networks, there will probably be a response to their move.We can be sure if there is a response, it won't take long to hear about it, as the networks can't afford to get too far behind one another in an already difficult market.

Julia Carson today announced that she will not seek reelection to her Indianapolis-based 7th district in 2008 but intends to serve out the remainder of her term. Carson has been in poor health for quite some time, and it was announced over the weekend that she had terminal lung cancer. Carson faced a tough challenge in 2006 from Republican Eric Dickerson (not the running back) in large part because of concerns over her health. The linked article indicates that Republicans believe they have a real shot at winning this seat, and with an open seat the race should at least start out competitive, but my initial suspicion is that Carson's retirement will ultimately make this seat safer for the Democrats next year than it would have been with a seriously ill Carson running.

The recent step to create a dedicated web site, rather than use the old free wordpress.com site, is a display of how much we each enjoy this blog as a project. This new site uses "Drupal", an open source software. Drupal is not dedicated blog software like Wordpress or Moveable Type. It is Content Management Software (CMS). Instead of being molded into a straightforward blog we have opted for a much more open platform. You can see one of the immediate results of this in our ability to separate our longer more developed "Essays" from our shorter, more immediate blog posts. So, the potential for what the site can do and how it can be displayed is much more open. There are a few drawbacks, of course.
