Why is Casanova on the roster
2008-06-03 02:07:00 I have nothing against Raul Casanova, but it's a waste of a roster spot to have a guy who is strictly a pinch hitter. There is no need for three catchers, none of them play a second position and all are very slow on the base path. Willie isn't using Castro as an early game pinch hitter and late in games if either Casanova or Castro get in scoring position a pinch runner is used. Casanova is a third catcher who should be in New Orleans waiting for a call-up when one of the full time catchers go on the DL. Both Tatis and Easley have practiced catching and are considered the emergency catchers which would get you by until the next day when Casanova could catch-up to the club.....The Mets need to fill the spot with an outfielder, Tatis and Easley can get plenty of playing time between Castillo knees and Delgado's bat. 2008-05-23 03:06:00 Raul Casanova did a decent job as the back-up catcher when Ramon Castro was down to start the year but that doesn't justify why he would be brought up with Alou going on the DL. The Mets need a right handed bat and Casanova can provide that but only as a pinch hitter. The team now has three players for one position and none of them can play an alternative position. It's a questionable move when you only carry a five man bench and Easley is gone on leave for his son's graduation. Especially with 1B/OF Val Pascucci hitting .291 with a .646 Slg. pct., the right hander could help in the outfield, give Delgado a day off and provide a power righty bat. If it turned out that he can't hit major league pitching, then Pagan should be returning soon and at least the team wouldn't have redundant positional players.The Mets have officially placed Alou on the DL and activated Casanova. source Daily News

2008-05-14 21:10:00 With so many injured catchers throughout the league, there was a risk that Raul Casanova would be claimed off waivers but the journeyman catcher made it through and will report to New Orleans. I'm glad we were able to keep him, as the back-up to the back-up Casanova did a decent job and with Castro on the team I'm sure he'll see more time with the big league team.Casanova, 35, will join the Zephyrs on Thursday after clearing waivers this week. The veteran catcher was designated for assignment by the Mets on Friday to make room for Ramon Castro, who had been activated from the disabled list. He won't throw for at least three months, so his season is essentially over. There's no word on whether he'll undergo surgery. I remember hearing over the winter that Neshek was having elbow problems. Not that we didn't pretty much know this already, but Yovani Gallardo has confirmed that he'll have surgery on his torn ACL. My fantasy team weeps. With Ramon Castro coming off the DL, the Mets have DFA Raul Casanova. The best bet is that he'll clear waivers and head to AAA. Over the past two seasons Paul Lo Duca and Ramon Castro have assumed the Mets catching responsibilities. No other position on the field is as physically challenging as that of the catcher. During those seasons the club has gone four deep to make it through the season. In 2006 Mike DiFelice played in 15 gms and Kelly Stinnett 7 gms when Lo Duca/Castro were down with injuries. Last year DiFelice returned and played in 14 gms while Sandy Alomar Jr. was in 8 gms. DiFelice who was credited with being a "Crash Davis" type catcher by developing younger pitchers in the minors while coming up for brief stints in the majors has moved on to Tampa Bay. Alomar Jr. has retired and joined his Dad on the bench. Castro has returned as the backup catcher and Lo Duca has been replaced by Brian Schneider.
