Via HuffPo, it seems that James Poniewozik of Time Magazine has a problem with Keith Olbermann?s latest takedown, that of Hillary Clinton for her incredibly ill-advised remark about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy taking place in the same month during 1968 that husband Bill wrapped up the Democratic Party presidential nomination in 1992, which would be June (and while that?s factually correct as noted here, we?re talking about two completely different contexts between Bill and Hil). Here is Poniewozik? The substance (or lack thereof) of the controversy notwithstanding?Olbermann is edging ever-closer to self-parody, or, worse, predictability. (As soon as the Clinton gaffe broke, blog commenters were wondering how ballistic he would go, and he obliged, and how.) Even if we concede his argument?that Clinton was at best callously and at worst intentionally suggesting she should stay in the race because Obama might be killed?every time he turns up the volume to 11 like this lately, ...

A Word About Casualties and Proportion
2008-05-01 16:37:00
Much has been made about the media’s grisly casualty benchmarks. They feel the need to point out every time we reach another thousand troops killed, even though it takes months for this to happen. It’s been said before, but the bottom line–still–is that casualties in the Iraq War are nowhere near that of previous wars. ...
Lies At the Top: American, Iraqi & Afghan Casualties Not Counted

US Military Statistics areMisleading and Wrong andDeliberately so.On June 29 2005, the Veterans Administration (an official U.S. body) admitted to the U.S. Congress that while there were over 103,000 U.S. military casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the official figures at the time were showing 13,000 casualties.A senior Pentagon official confirmed on the condition of anonymity that the actual death toll of U.S. service personnel as of 1st May 2006 in Iraq was in excess of 12,000. The real number of casualties ? i.e. those unable to return to active service - is in excess of 150,000. He also confirmed that all reports from the U.S. military in Iraq confirmed that Iraqi resistance to the occupation growing better organized and more deadly by the day. Those Not Counted1. With an estimated 1,000 Mahdi fighters killed, captured, wounded and surrendered, the Mahdi Army has taken an attrition rate of 1.5 to 2.5 percent over the past five days. Casualties of War
2008-03-27 13:00:00
The Winter issue of Perspectives in Biology and Medicine presents a thoughtful overview on war and its casualties. Throughout America's first 145 years of war, far more of the country's military personnel died from infectious diseases than from combat injuries. This only began to change in World War II due to better methods of disease prevention and treatment. The authors suggested that soldier deaths throughout U.S. history can be divided into a Disease Era (1775-1918), during which infectious diseases were the major killer of America's armed forces, and a Trauma Era (1941-present), in which combat-related injuries were the major cause of fatalities. Using the 3,400 U.S. military fatalities in Iraq as a comparison, suicide deaths have become more prevalent than deaths from infectious disease.  Given the rising rate of suicides in U.S. soldiers posted overseas, this trend is not expected to change. Bush Blames The Troops

by Bob Cesca @ 11:10 AM (EST) One of the most remarkable aspects of the Iraq invasion and occupation has been the administration’s–an-d mainly the president’s–predict-ably awful and irresponsible habit of placing the burden of the success or failure of this thing squarely on the shoulders of an already overburdened military. Specifically, President Bush and ...

Fire engulfs Iraqi central bank, no casualties - police
2008-01-29 08:38:00
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A large fire engulfed Iraq's central bank building in Baghdad early on Monday, but there were no reports of casualties and the cause of the blaze was unclear, police said. Police said the fire badly damaged the top four floors of the six-storey building, including the central bank governor's office. The blaze erupted just after midnight and took more than six hours to put out. One bank employee and witnesses said flames ripped through most of the building. "No one can tell you what happened because no one can enter. The fire spread through the whole building," the central bank employee said by telephone from the scene. Guards at the central bank prevented cameramen and photographers taking pictures of the building, which is surrounded by concrete blast walls in central Baghdad. It is not in the heavily protected Green Zone compound, where key government ministries are located. The central bank has had a low profile during the upheaval in Ira...

Fire engulfs Iraqi central bank, no casualties-police
2008-01-29 07:44:00
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A large fire engulfed Iraq's central bank building in Baghdad early on Monday, but there were no reports of casualties and the cause of the blaze was unclear, police said. One bank employee and witnesses said flames ripped through most of the building, which is several floors high. By mid-morning, fire-fighters had extinguished most of the blaze. "No one can tell you what happened because no one can enter. The fire spread through the whole building," the central bank employee said by telephone from the scene. It appeared the fire erupted before anyone had arrived for work. Dozens of fire engines fought the blaze, witnesses said. The building is surrounded by concrete blast walls in central Baghdad. It is not in the heavily protected Green Zone compound, where key government ministries are located. The central bank has had a low profile during the upheaval in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. It announced last week that annual inflat...

Pentagon Fudging Its Casualties Numbers
2007-11-18 11:08:00
by Mike Whitney The Pentagon has been concealing the true number of American casualties in the Iraq War. The real number exceeds 15,000 and CBS News can prove it. CBS’s Investigative Unit wanted to do a report on the number of suicides in the military and “submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Department of Defense”. After 4 months they received a document which showed--that between 1995 and 2007--there were 2,200 suicides among “active duty” soldiers. Baloney. The Pentagon was covering up the real magnitude of the “suicide epidemic”. Following an exhaustive investigation of veterans’ suicide data collected from 45 states; CBS discovered that in 2005 alone “THERE WERE AT LEAST 6,256 AMONG THOSE WHO SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES. THAT’S 120 EACH AND EVERY WEEK IN JUST ONE YEAR.” That is not a typo. Active and retired military personnel, mostly young veterans between the ages of 20 to 24, are returning from combat and killing themselves in record numbers. We can ass...

Iraq Civilian Casualties Update
2007-10-06 05:21:00
I haven't posted on civilian casualties in Iraq since the end of June and thought the end of the third quarter would be a good time to revisit it. There's good news in that civilian casualties in Iraq dropped dramatically during September, a fact which has already been widely reported. The statistics kept by icasualties.org indicate that September's 746 deaths were less than half those in August, when 1,598 deaths were reported. Since the Samarra mosque bombing in February 2006 icasualties has reported only two months with fewer civilian deaths: June 2006 (738) and February 2006 (688). On a daily basis, September's average of 24.9 deaths is almost identical to those two months (24.6 each month). Civilian deaths in Baghdad have dropped in three of the last four months, testimony to the impact the surge of an additional 30,000 U.S. troops has had there. Again, only in June 2006 and February 2006 have fewer deaths been reported in Baghdad since the Samarra mosque bombing....

Pic by Saman Kariyawasam For the past eight days the Security Forces have continued a major thrust from their defended localities near the Western seaboard town of Mannar. Though it is premature to discuss details related to the aims and objectives since the offensive is ongoing, a look at the overall scenario in the North, including the Wanni, reveals a stark picture. The military thrust northwards, along the landmass west of the Giant's Tank and the seas of the Gulf of Mannar began on Monday September 24. The troops are advancing in the direction of Viduthaltivu. Two casualties in the Nablus raid
2007-09-18 22:52:00
One Israeli soldier and a Palestinian gunman have been killed in an IDF raid on a refugee camp in the city of Nablus. Witnesses have reported that heavy fighting went on inside the camp, with Israeli gunship showering over the area. It's not clear how the Israeli soldier died - PFLP and Islamic Jihad are claming that he was killed in an explosion, but the IDF sources are attributing his death to small-arms fire. Also, Al Jazeera is reporting about the incident in which IDF soldiers allegedly used a Palestinian civilian as human shield during the same raid.Read more about the raid and human shield accusations in the Al Jazeera article.

Civilian Casualties, Warlords, Professors and Tricky Dissimulating Jews

August 31, 2007. “Dear RAWA: Yes, we HAVE KNOWN FOR A LONG TIME - and do not need Human Rights Watch to tell us - that terrible criminals are in the puppet Karzai regime. You at RAWA have, for years, been saying this! You have published accurate detailed evidence. I find it very revealing that only when mainstream organizations “report” - like Human Rights Watch which is completely funded by the capitalist financial speculator, George Soros - does the world begin to notice, no? When RAWA spoke about the criminals in government or when Marc Herold reported on civilian casualties, very few mainstream persons listened. In fact, Human Rights Watch launched into unsupported, personalized criticisms of my research and for now close to four years ignored the war criminals in the Karzai regime.” Context to the above passage: In his letter to RAWA, a (Swiss?) associate professor of economics and women’s studies at the University of New Hampshire, Marc Herold, e...

Beyond PTSD: the Moral Casualties of War
2007-06-08 23:19:00
BY CAMILLO ?MAC? BICA6/4/07According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, during the Iraq war, 56 percent of soldiers and Marines (henceforth I will use the term ?soldiers? to include members of all branches, both male and female) have killed another human being, 20 percent admit being responsible for noncombatant deaths, and 94 percent had seen bodies and human remains.[i] According to Colonel Charles Engel, MD, MPH, director of the deployment health clinical center at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, between 15 and 29 percent of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan will suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Because soldiers still on active duty are being deployed longer and more often to Iraq, experts say that the PTSD rate among Iraq veterans could well eclipse the 30% lifetime rate found in a 1990 national study of Vietnam veterans. While these numbers are staggering and should give any rational human being pause, the readjustment difficulti...
Iraqi Civilian Casualties
2007-06-02 18:20:00
I found this post yesterday which lists monthly civilian casualties in Iraq using the same data source I did for two posts last month. Professor Engram, the author, shows monthly data going all the way back to April 2005, and makes the same adjustments to the data which I would for analysis purposes (e.g. not counting the Baghdad Morgue's data in the totals for the only two months they were included in the data). He's also separated deaths by execution from deaths from suicide bombing for the past 8 months. Professor Engram's chart shows a sharp increase in the number of civilian deaths in the wake of the Samarra bombing in February 2006. The number of deaths in February 2006 were higher than for any month prior to that (despite the fact that the bombing occurred three weeks into the month), and the number of months in every month since then has been higher than in February 2006. Since November civilian deaths have been running more than twice the level reported in February ...

Faulty Intelligence and Civilian Casualties
2007-05-12 20:18:00
May 12, 2007. One reporter noted that one of the recent bouts of civilian casualties in Afghanistan might have been the result of deliberate misinformation by “tribal rivals.†Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. I would hope that NATO/US troops are no longer falling for this BS. I’ve heard that they have become quite skeptical about local information and are especially wary of walk-in informers. I imagine that they just don’t have the time and resources to follow up on every report. I would also hope the situation is not as bad as late 2001/early 2002 when on the say-so of some random guy the Americans wiped out a convoy of tribal leaders on the way to a (the?) Jirga. Turns out they were not Al-Qaeda. And once a Shura-yi Nazar commander tried to get the Americans to call in an air strike on…..Americans, plus a few of his regional rivals who were accompanying them.
