Pitchers and Catchers Report
2009-02-15 01:16:00 Spring Training 2009 has officially begun for the Giants as pitchers, catchers and various other position players reported to camp on Saturday. There wasn't much going on as today was just the reporting date and the first official workout isn't scheduled until Sunday, but there were a enough tidbits to come up with a small post on reporting day.Apparently Noah Lowry isn't 100 percent healthy after all as he has reported some shoulder stiffness upon arriving in Scottsdale. The lefty was supposed to be on schedule to take part fully in pitchers workouts on Sunday, but his recent set-back will likely limit any throwing he may do. However, Lowry thinks he'll be fine in due time and also adressed the the questions regarding the starting rotation. He hinted that he would expect a move of some kind if everyone is healthy come April, even a possible trade. There have been whispers of Lowry possibly starting the year off in Fresno as he still has a minor league option left, but I wouldn...

Why do they insist on carrying three catchers
2008-06-04 15:09:00 Raul Casanova was placed on Bereavement leave and before saying anything about baseball, my condolences to him and his family. While Casanova is away from the team he will be replaced by Robinson Cancel. The Mets appear to be fixated on carrying three catchers even though it's an unnecessary roster spot. As I've said before Willie insist using his catchers regularly as pinch hitters and when they are there a liability on the base path due to their lack of speed. Granted Cancel played some 1B and LF but other then an emergency situation I wouldn't be comfortable putting him out there. The Mets have the three outfielders in New Orleans and any of them would have made more sense to call up.The Mets announced after Tuesday night's 9-6 win over the Giants here that Robinson Cancel is being recalled to replace Raul Casanova for the next three days source NY Post

Top 11 Catchers By VORP
2008-05-20 10:35:00 Following Geovany Soto's inside-the-park HR last night, I was curious to see whether or not he is now the top catcher in fantasy baseball. I used Baseball prospectus' VORP statistic to rank the catchers so far this season. The case can be made that Soto is the best. My Take on Carty?s Take on Fantasy Catchers
2008-03-02 19:53:00 One of my favorite columns in this year’s Seamless draft kit—now available over at Roster Magazine—was an interview we conducted with Derek Carty (of THT Fantasy Focus fame). The conversation covered topics ranging from ace starting pitchers to rookie outfielders, but the segment I enjoyed most was a dissection of the fantasy backstop. Friday at THT, Derek’s ...

2008 Fantasy Baseball Catchers Rankings: Keeper League Draft Values
2008-02-04 12:09:00 In between posting various iterations of prospect lists (John Sickels' book shipped yesterday so I am not close to finished!), I am begining to list players at the various their position-eligible positions for 2008 fantasy baseball auction drafts and assign dolalr values. These values represent nothing you will see anywhere else. As a result, i expect disagreement and disparagements of my fantasy acumen. These are based on my draft experiences in AL- and NL-only 4x4 keeper leagues with 14- or 15-man protect lists and up to five minor league protects. Therefore, they must account for expected inflation. And by "expected", I mean a general sense based on past experiences. For example, last year Vladimir Guerrero and Dave Ortiz went for $46 in my AL-only and Jose Reyes went for $52 and Albert Pujols went for $46 in my NL-only. However, this doesn't mean every player fetched a 33-50% inflation premium. There are roster limitations that will result in $14 shortstops going for $4. Once ...

Inge To Report With Catchers
2008-01-28 12:43:00 This is more of a no-trade rumor. Brandon Inge will report to Spring Training as a catcher. If he can get back into the swing of things, he could take over as the starter for Ivan Rodriguez in 2009. The average AL catcher hit .254/.318/.395 in 2007, while Inge hit .236/.312/.376. Maybe he can get his power back up to previous levels and call a decent game. If so, the $19.1MM owed to him over the next three seasons is more palatable.

2008 Fantasy Baseball Catchers Rankings
2007-12-19 04:35:00 Here is a list of catchers based on the weighting of the past three seasons with the most recent contributing 60%, 2006 at 30% and 2005 at 10%. Each player then has his score in each of the five traditional fantasy baseball categories ranked relative to his position peers and averaged to arrive at a composite score - the lower the better. I did not change where some players ended, but I could not leave catchers like Jarrod Saltalamacchia behind so many mediocrities. So I added an "up" or "down" to some of those whose ranking looks to change significantly in 2008. Comments are welcome and encouraged. Switching catchers
2007-10-30 19:12:00 The Denver Post today takes a look at the Rockies free agents. The Rockies post-season, star catcher is a free agent and his playoff performance may have priced him out of their league. If the Rockies loss Torrealba they may go after Lo Duca. The reports have been that Torrealba has a bad throwing arm shoulder and is easy to run on, not many steal attempts during the playoffs to notice whether that was true or not. The Mets seem to be viewing Lo Duca as a last resort, tired of his negative impact. I totally disagree and wish Paulie was back but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. The Post also looks at Left handed reliever Affeldt who I think would be a great pickup.Catcher Yorvit Torrealba, as much any Rockie, raised his profile this fall even as he insisted Monday "that nobody knows who I am." Not exactly. The Mets and Marlins do and have interest in the free agent. The Rockies would like to have Torrealba back, depending on his price tag. Colorado will pursue Paul LoDuca...

The Teacher is In: Orioles 2007 Season Grades - The Catchers
2007-10-04 05:45:00 Well, I'm going to play teacher this morning and assign grades the best I can to the Oriole players on the squad. Some are going to like what I have said, and the grades I have issued, some are not. That being said, let's begin. We all know that the Orioles have more or less sucked this season, and this winter will be nothing short of critical in charting the course of the franchise in the future.Today, I'll be doing the catchers...*** Ramon Hernandez, Catcher2007 Numbers: .258 AVG, 9 HR, 62 RBI, .333 OBP, .382 SLGGrade: C-Granted, Ramon was injured and suffering through a few ailments, mainly an oblique issue (boy, we have had a lot of those); saying he had a down season would be an understatement. Hernandez obviously did not follow up on his successful 2006, and at times, he became part of the problem.Along with struggles at the plate, there were times when he was catching that I was completely disturbed. I sit behind home plate on Friday nights and there have been a handful of ti...

Mack speaks on catchers
2007-08-27 19:13:00 Mack had one of the best sites on the net in regards to minor league players (Macks Mets), since retiring his site he can often be found contributing to Fushing University along with numerous other forum sites. I find Mack to be a treasure trove of minor league information and often ask him about players I am not familiar with, he has always been kind enough to respond to my inquiries. He was his respond today in regards to the Mets 2008 catching situation;Mack, I was looking at the catcher situation for next year and there doesn't appear to be a solution. Lo Duca is an injury risk, the free agent market is weak, the trade front doesn't look promising and Castro in my opinion is a backup/platoon at best. Reyes and Pena aren't ready and I don't see another prospect catcher in the org. since Jesus Flores left. Michele Abreu started as a catcher and was later moved to first, I was thinking maybe he could be moved back. He did well in ST, I know he had the Visa problem but is he sti...

The Catchers
2007-08-13 01:46:00 There may become a situation with the catchers position. Paul Lo Duca was placed on the DL, Lo Duca fought through the hamstring injury earlier this month and after convincing the staff that he was ok he re-injured it on Saturday. Lo Duca wasn't happy to be placed on the DL, but the club had very little choice but to force the issue. In today's game Ramon Castro had to leave with back pain. Castro is listed as day-to-day. Mike DeFelice was recalled to fill Lo Duca's spot and finished out today's game. DeFelice is an up-grade in calling a game, he has stayed with the team over the past two years because of his "Crash Davis" status. DeFelice is credited with working with numerous pitchers in AAA and helping them with their maturation. However, he is an offensive liability and if Castro isn't available for several days the club may need to carry a third catcher. The only option unless the team looks to the waiver wires is Sandy Alomar Jr. , he still has a good bat but I'm not sure...

Where Did All These Great Catchers Come From??
2007-06-20 21:16:00 Those of you who haven't been playing this game for a long time may not be aware of how bad this position used to be. If you were in an NL or AL only league there were years when there were only one or two good catchers in the entire league. I should point out, however, that though there are lots of good catchers out there, in my high stakes league I have Rod Barajas and Miguel Montero in the NL and Dioner Navarro in the AL (in addition to one of the guys below). Ugh. I cannot recall when there have been this many good fantasy catchers out there, and we are NOT even including Joe Mauer, Brian McCann, Ivan Rodriguez or John Buck, who do not merit this discussion at least so far this year. Here are the top contenders for this season:Russ Martin-.292/.361/.404 8HR 43RBI 11SB. Many analysts think he is the most valuable fantasy catcher, and it isn't hard to see why. 11 SB from the catcher position? He is John Wathan with actual hitting skills. It is hard to imagine that he will continu...

The catchers
2007-04-20 04:52:00 As I stated in the recap of the game, Paul Lo Duca was not in the line-up tonight due to the hand injury he suffered in Philly on tues. It appears the decision was Willie's alone and that Lo Duca will be difficult to keep off the field.Lo Duca, meanwhile, is considered day-to-day for Friday's series opener against the Braves at Shea Stadium. Randolph played Lo Duca on Wednesday when the backstop told him he felt good enough to try, despite taking a foul tip off his finger on Tuesday against the Phillies. But then the manager saw him struggle in the game, taking atypically weak swings en route to going 0-for-5. source Charles Nobles MLB.comRamon Castro has played admirably so far this season, as Lo Duca's backup. In tonight's game he broke it open with a two out, three run homer. In 14 plate appearances, Castro is batting .357 with six RBIs and two homeruns, his Slg. percentage is .667 with a .455 OBP. Seriously, is there a better backup catcher in the game? The guy sits on the b...

Three Sleeper Catchers
2007-04-06 20:23:00 If you're in a single catcher roto league, and you don't have a top 5 catcher, it's pretty much anyone's guess as to who among the rest will finish in the top 12 for the year. The recent injury to Baltimore receiver Ramon Hernandez both supports that point and makes the question more relevant for those looking for a replacement. Here are three options that may not yet be tapped in your league.1. Gerald Laird, TEXUPSIDE: 500AB, .280, 20HR, 65RBI, 85RLIKELY: 450 AB, .270, 15HR, 50RBI, 75R2. Catchers - They Ain't What They Used To Be
2007-03-06 10:32:02 CATCHERS: It wasn?t that long ago that Mike Piazza and Ivan Rodriguez warranted early round picks, due to the scarcity at the catcher position. But last year marked a definite change with as many as 8-10 backstops performing as bona fide fantasy assets, not just players who ?won?t hurt you?. New faces such as B.McCann, K.Johjima and Russell Martin now afford you the security on draft day to know if you miss out on a top 5 catcher, there is still plenty of value in the deep end of the talent pool. Ranking Catchers and Second Baseman
2007-03-04 10:28:02 I have compiled some catcher rankings and second base rankings. To me, the catcher position is like the tight end in football. Take one of the top 3. After that its truly a crap shoot and even if you find someone good, they are likely to be inconsistent and at best, still not give you great value. So let me get the catchers out of the way so we can move on to bigger and better things. And some words of advice: In a snake draft, if you can get value by drafting Mauer in round 5 or higher, take him. If you can get Victor Martinez in round 7 or higher, take him. If you can get McCann in round 7 or higher, take him. Otherwise, wait until, lets say, round 23 and select a number of these sleepers who may end up being the #4 or #5 catcher when its all said and done:David Ross He hit 20 hr last year in limited action. At this thin and unpredictable position, take a flier on him. I already have in one draft in round 22. (Why take Michael Barrett or Jorge Posada 10 rounds earlier?)Josh Bard .3...
