Catechetical Liturgy and Liturgical Catechesis
2008-05-09 03:17:00
Below is a short, 6-pg paper I wrote for my Methods of Catechesis II class on the relationship between catechesis and the liturgy. If we are going to foster active participation in the liturgy, which is a goal outlined for us by Sacrosanctum Concilium, then we must incorporate liturgical elements into our catechesis and help our audience to learn more from the liturgy. I hope you find this paper to be a helpful and informative treatment of that task.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -Catechesis and the Liturgy?Catechesis is intrinsically linked with the whole of liturgical and sacramental activity, for it is in the sacraments, especially in the Eucharist, that Christ Jesus works in fullness for the transformation of human beings.?? Pope John Paul II, Catechesi Tradendae, no. 23.Catechesis is a demanding enterprise, and for good reason. Since souls are at stake, the Church must demand a great deal from those who set out to catechize Her members. Such catechists must be well-...

Welcome to the Latest Utter Abomination

The following video from the American Life League reports on one of the most appalling things I have seen in a very long time. I exclaimed out loud several times while I was watching this. If this doesn't rouse within you a healthy dose of righteous indignation, then you're dead already. We MUST keep this garbage out of the hands of our children.Beware of the millstone.....Pax Christi, phatcatholic
Three New Handouts on Mary and Our Rule of Faith
2007-10-31 01:23:00
I uploaded three new handouts to the "My Files" application towards the bottom of my sidebar. I used these during recent RCIA sessions and I thought you all my find them useful. The first one, "Mary as the Ark of the Covenant" is basically a chart of the Scripture passages that show the parallels between the Ark of the Old Covenant and Mary. These parallels point to her as the Ark of the New Covenant, and like the ark of old: pure, undefiled, and made of the finest material. The second one, "Scripture and Tradition on the Infallibility of the Magisterium" is pretty self-explanatory.The third one, "Scripture-Tradition-Magisteriu-m" is a short, one-page Scriptural defense of the Catholic rule of faith. We depend on all three, not just on Scripture, and Scripture itself supports this "three-legged stool" (as it is often called).I hope these handouts prove to be helpful.Pax Christi, phatcatholic
New PhatCat Audio Catechesis
2007-10-15 18:47:00
Here is the presentation I gave two Sundays ago during RCIA on the "three-legged stool" of the Catholic Church:Scripture, Tradition, and the MagisteriumI feel a lot better about this presentation than I did about the ones I gave for RCIA last year. It just seems to flow better, and I don't trip over my words as much. I provide it here for your edification....and so a verdict can finally be made as to whether or not I actually have a southern accent. I'll deny it to my grave....Pax Christi, phatcatholicps: You can also find this mp3 in the "Sound of the Trumpet" section of my sidebar.
The Church's Constant Preoccupation
2007-09-13 17:07:00
The following paper is the fruit of the beforementioned "trial" for which I sought your prayers. It's a five-page analysis of one of many themes that could be drawn from Mosignor Eugene Kevane's 75-pg. introduction to Teaching the Catholic Faith Today: Twentieth Century Catechetical Documents of the Holy See (here or here). I'm sure some of you are probably thinking, "5-pages, big deal," but when you struggle with anxiety and perfectionism....it IS a big deal!Anyway, I hope this little paper will increase your appreciation for the role of the catechism in the history of the Church's catechetical activity and that you will come to see how vitally important it is for a proper handing on of the faith.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -The Role of the Catechism in the History and Aims of Catechesis? The Catechism is the constant preoccupation of the Church? (qtd. in Kevane xiii). These words of Pope John XXIII to the pastors of the diocese of Rome illustrate the importance o...
Do It Right the First Time
2007-09-04 22:35:00
Here's a short paper I wrote last night for my Methods (of Catechesis) class. Actually, it was only supposed to be 2-3 paragraphs, so that's really short and it leaves no room to go really in depth on anything. But, I suppose it's a good little summary of what a proper catechetical methodology is supposed to look like.Let's do it right the first time, people, as in, grounded in Catechesi Tradendae and the General Directory for Catechesis.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -A Methodology that Reflects the Aims of CatechesisThrough the combination of various articles from the General Directory of Catechesis (or ?GDC?), one can confidently state that the aim of catechesis is understanding and conversion for insertion into the Mystery of Christ, with the ultimate goal being union with Him. Methodology is basically how one goes about achieving these ends, and only a certain methodology will do. As with the goal of catechesis, the GDC is our guide in characterizing the proper ...
The "Born" Identity....of the Christ Child
2007-08-13 15:35:00
Check out the latest post from UNBORN WORD of the day. It links the "Bourne" movie series to the unborn child and those who threaten his life. I've seen all three movies, but I never made the connection. Pretty creative.I think a lot of what makes a good catechist is being able to find the "catechetical moment" (I just coined that phrase) in every day life. So much of what we see and hear and experience each day can be used to teach people about the faith, you just have to keep your eyes open. When you can tell a story, or relate a doctrine to something that your audience is familiar with, it helps them to grasp the message and make it their own. Movie clips in particular are helpful because they add another sensory experience and they break up the monotony of a 45-min. lecture.Btw, the new movie in the series, The Bourne Ultimatum, is off the proverbial chain.Pax Christi, phatcatholic
"Unless You Become Like Children...."
2007-08-01 17:04:00
Christine from Domestic Vocation has a great post on how to explain the Sacrifice of the Mass to little children. I liked it so much that I couldn't help but provide a little bit of it here: First, to understand how the sacrifice of Calvary is present at the Mass, we must understand that God is outisde of time. Gracious! How on EARTH do I explain that everything in time is an ever-present NOW to God?Suddenly, a picture came into my head: a snow globe.Imagine the people inside the snow globe are real. Inside their tiny world, they can look around and see stuff. But they cannot see everything. We, outside, can see the entirety of the snow globe. In this way, we are like God looking at Man who is trapped in time. He can see all of time all at once, while we can see only what is right in front of us.[. . .]Next was how to explain Jesus offering Himself to the Father daily. Offering, specifically, His Sacrifice on the Cross.Again, I got a clear picture in my mind of my daughters' art w...
Art as Servant: St. Michael the Archangel
2007-06-13 16:33:00
Check out the following drawing of St. Michael the Archangel by David Myers, along with his explanation of the drawing:I have wanted to do this drawing for a long time. It is my answer to every bad representation of Saint Michael that I have ever seen. I mean, is it just me, or shouldn't someone known as "the general of the armies of the Lord" look like someone who can stomp a hole in the devil's hind quarters? Most of the traditional images of St. Michael leave me with a bad taste in my mouth, like I've eaten something with too much sugar in it. I don't want to see some androgynous fairy dancing a ballet on the head of a more manly looking satan, but a butt-kickin' Prince of Angels glorious in his victory over evil!I don't claim that my version is the definitive image of the incorporeal, beautiful Archangel Michael, but I think that it does convey a little more of the strength given him by his Creator. Incidentally, in a funny spiritual exposition, I modeled for both Michael ...
