Protests, Catholic schools, & Juan Rangel
2012-01-17 16:28:00 Welcome back! School closing protests and a Catholic school enrollment increase dominate today’s news (including some items from over the weekend).  There’s also a fascinating look at Juan Rangel’s political ascent. Protesters vow to ‘save’ school from take over by ‘politically connected’ operator Sun Times:  More than 200 protestors used the tune of “We shall overcome... Read more »

2011-11-28 20:16:00 Touching story of holocaust survivor reuniting with the Catholic family that saved her. Via The Blaze: An 83-year-old Holocaust survivor reunited last week with the Catholic family that rescued her and her family, hiding them from the Nazis in Lithuania. The Thanksgiving reunion was 66 years in the making, but Mary Katz Erlich, now a grandmother of nine, had no trouble recognizing 81-year-old Aurimas Ruzgys or his 83-year-old sister Egle when she met them at the airport.

Wonder why the Catholic Church says marriage is only for a man and a woman?
2011-11-15 02:43:00 If you want to be closed-minded about it, then skip the rest of this. America’s Catholic Bishops have established a new website, “Marriage: Unique for a Reason,” to help explain the church’s position. You might not agree, but at least it will explain a position that in today’s culture is considered to be divisive, if... Read more »
Being Catholic, gay and celibate: Reflections of a faithful Catholic
2011-11-05 15:51:00 I don’t think I’ve ever read a more thoughtful article about being gay and Catholic than the one I read in Our Sunday Visitor on November 3.  Most people seem to choose their sexuality over any religious beliefs, so Steven Gershom’s article about being gay, celibate AND Catholic was refreshing. We all struggle with our sexuality... Read more »

Deliver us from Evil Priests: On Cases of Child Abuse in the Catholic Churc
2011-07-11 02:48:00 Deliver us From Evil When the documentary Deliver us from Evil came out, I shunned it at first for two reasons. I knew that it would affect me emotionally, so I was reluctant to go through it. Child abuse is a touchy subject and especially in a documentary you cannot pretend it did not happen or that it is a work of fiction. My second reason was that I did not want the documentary to stain the image and respect I have for the institution of the Catholic Church. Despite its various shortcomings, I could not help feeling admiration for its traditions that have managed to exist and last for about two thousand years. Needless to say, I was in a state of shock and torpor after watching the documentary. No, I do not believe it is merely a ?witch hunt? or propaganda against the Church, since those were real children affected by the horrific actions of various priests. I was mainly appalled by the statements of Father O' Grady. He took everything so lightly and did not seem to realize the...

2011-05-22 18:04:00 Roxanne M. MartinoIt did it by appointing to its board of trustees Roxanne M. Martino, a campaign contributor to political candidates who are strongly opposed to the Church’s teachings on life. The Cardinal Newman Society revealed her history: A review of Martino’s contribution history on City-Data.com (see here and here) revealed that she gave a total of $16,150 to the pro-abortion group EMILY’s List between 2005 and 2008. On its website, EMILY’s List states that it is “dedicated to electing pro-choice Democratic women to office.”...
Kaitlyn is Being Catholic ... Really
2011-05-07 15:00:00 My name is Kaitlyn and I'm in second grade at Mackeben Elementary School. In RE (religious education), I learn how to be Catholic in many ways. I will tell you some ways. You can pray to Jesus and Mary and Joseph. They can help you fix your problems. If you believe in them, they will talk to you. When you are Catholic you are kind and you are supposed to act like Jesus. On April 30th, I made my First Holy Communion. I was scared but it was fun. I wore a pretty dress. It was white with a veil. First Communion means you receive the Lord. We sang a special song. I felt happy because now I can receive the Lord by myself. ...

Everybody is Guilty when They Are Catholic
2011-04-24 01:50:00 A reprint of my Easter Blog from last year ~ the message timeless. I've added a few pictures from past Easter celebrations when I was young. Easter was always a holiday we looked forward to. We got a new outfit, dinner was served at Grandma's house, and following dessert we were given clues written in Gram's best handwriting that led us to our Easter basket. Happy Easter to you and your family!
Catholic Or Jersey Shore?
2011-03-12 15:00:00 When our god child made her First Holy Communion, my husband and I gave her a beautiful rosary. I thought it would look pretty around her neck for the professional pictures that were being taken, but when her mother brought her to the photographer, one of the teachers made her take it off. She was only allowed to hold it in her hand for the photographs. Her mom and I were not happy, but we decided this was not a prudent time to discuss the matter.I thought of this the other day as I was running around doing errands and I saw several people (men and women) wearing rosaries. I wanted to ask if they were Catholic and if they...

It is a .pdf file. The address covered a lot of ground and not only about the present state of the Catholic Press in America and worldwide. One issue which he focused on was the decline in knowledge about the faith. His remarks were quite startling. They seem to echo what has been said in other conferences, media and events, not only in the United States but also in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe. He said: "[W]e now have two generations of Catholics who have been significantly under-catechized in their own faith. Institutional Sex Corruption: Plight of Roman Catholic Church and Sathya Sa
2010-09-19 01:00:00 In the face of far too powerful, worldwide exposure of endemic Roman Catholic Church corruption, Pope Benedict XVI has called for reconciliation. Only at this chronically late hour, and in the face of terrible and universal threat to his institution's survival, does he begin to treat sexual abuse as a reportable crime, and make apologies, and require his officials to take meaningful actions against the sexual abuse that the world now nows is rampant in his Church. It is the year 2010 and yet official communiques coming from the Vatican and other official sections of the Roman Catholic Church almost make it sound as though decades of sexual abuse complaints involving priests all over the world were something new. There may be contrite tears now, and official cries for reconciliation. But where were these down the decades of victims' anguish? The Sathya Sai Organization still has not come to this point. It too has lain low. It too has turned a hard heart of the cries of individua...
Is NPR anti-Catholic?
2010-08-26 03:59:00 An extreme anti-homosexual bill was introduced in Uganda last fall that seeks lifelong prison sentences for single acts of homosexuality and shorter terms for those who fail to report it. Human rights supporters are afire, western nations have put pressure against the bill and even the Catholic Church has distanced itself from the bill's author, David Bahati. The story ran today on NPR and has met criticism from some Catholics who claim the story itself is the latest in an ongoing anti-Catholic agenda put forth by the NPR news organization. Highlighting a bill that would be considered hate by western standards in a nation that is 52% Catholic seems, to some, an attack by association. Extreme anti-homosexual measures are not...

Note that the student did not argue the merits or demerits of natural law philosophy versus utilitarianism, the point that the professor, Kenneth Howell, was making. The university was so impressed with the student's (il)logic that it spring into action and, as a certain sports announcer might say, "He gone!"Details of this unbelievable infringement on free...
U of Ill. Instructor Fired Over His Catholic Beliefs
2010-07-10 16:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston A University of Illinois instructor of the school's Introduction to Catholicism and Modern Catholic Thought course was fired at the end of last semester because he had the temerity to send a student an email that explained the Catholic doctrine against homosexuality. In the email, professor Ken Howell of Champaign wrote, "Natural Moral Law says that Morality must be a response to REALITY. In other words, sexual acts are only appropriate for people who are complementary, not the same." The thought police at U of I decided that no teacher that taught Catholic theory had better EVER be a real Catholic that actually holds Catholic beliefs. Why, it would be unseemly, don't you know?...

Everybody is Guilty when They Are Catholic
2010-03-28 19:28:00 Like anything associated with the Catholic Church--there are many rules. No meat on Fridays is a big one--as Catholic kids we suffered through tuna fish casserole or grilled cheese and tomato soup for the six Fridays during lent. Usually these were rotated every other Friday, although my Mom reserved the right to shake things up a bit and serve tuna less the macaroni on burned toast points (she scraped most of the charred remains off before serving and always opened the windows to clear the smoke--and it wasn't the operator's fault in case you're wondering--we were told our toaster never worked properly).
Catholic Church Reforms?
2009-12-08 16:56:00 The Roman Catholic Church does many good things, but sadly at its most recent major conference, Vatican II, its reform disposed Pope died and the Church has since been a major enemy of vital human rights, particularly those of women and gays. Manifestly women need all the protections they can get against venereal diseases. Gays ...
Annulment catholic church and Domestic Violence
2009-11-17 14:27:00 I came across an article called, 'A new theology of divorce'. Mike Sweitzer-Beckman is the author, and he was speaking about he was one of the statistics when it comes to children of divorce. He isn't one of those that seemed all that harmed by it as he speaks of his parents, and later their new marriages and his new step siblings. He spoke of a number of different circumstances of annulment that people he knew from the Catholic church had gone though personally. I'm not Catholic myself, but I have heard about the process a number of times from people I know. I wanted to point this article out, because it seems one of my most popular articles on this blog from the past was Marriage Annulment Grounds in the Catholic Church. There was a lady in my Domestic Violence group that was seeking an annulment due to the emotional abuse, verbal abuse, among other things that torn the marriage to pieces. I will never forget her husband for one reason! ...

2009-10-22 05:02:00 I have been looking forward to CNN's "Latino in America" for months, but while watching tonight's episode and hearing both sides of the divide in St. Ann, Missouri's Holy Trinity Catholic Church (nicknamed Holy Trinity Hispanic Church), all I could do was shake my head. Neither group seems to be making a great effort to know the other--the Latino side because some are uncomfortable that they aren't fluent in English and the English side because they feel like Latinos should learn English. I disagree with both. They both need to meet in the middle. English is not the official language in the United States, and we're constantly bragging about being a big melting pot but then contradicting ourselves by...
Catholic church in 'stunning' move
2009-10-20 23:59:00 The number of Bingo players could grow sharply as the result of the Vatican's epochal decision today to add another free space to Bingo cards. At press conferences in Rome and London on Tuesday, Vatican officials also announced that any time anyone makes Bingo on 0-67 that the winner will receive an autographed baseball from former White Sox catcher Ron Karkovice, who used to be urged by the announcers to "hit a little bingo," and indeed he was hitting for an average of .067...BINGO! "It's a stunning turn of events," says Lawrence Cunningham, theology professor at Notre Dame University. "At the very least, it takes our mind off the fact that we were never really in the USC game on...

Bashing Obama Yet Again With ?The Catholic Crutch?
2009-04-15 23:10:00 (And also posted over here.)As many of us are aware, we observed the most important day of the Christian calendar last Sunday in commemoration of Easter. And if you guessed that that has ushered in yet another round of pundit idiocy about how President Obama is supposedly losing the support of Catholic voters, then you win a free picture of Bill Donahue suitable for mounting on a dart board or insertion into the bottom of your cat?s litter box.The most recent culprit if Amy Sullivan, ?religion correspondent? for Time Magazine here (and I have an issue with reporters from our corporate media pretending to write about faith generally, usually because they use it as an excuse for their own twisted brand of pontificating ? The Catholic Church?s ACORN Inquisition
2008-11-13 23:00:00 (By the way, I also posted over here today.)This CNN story tells us?The Roman Catholic Church is cutting off funds to the community organizing group ACORN, citing complaints over its voter registration drives in the November 4 election as part of the reason. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development froze its contributions to the group in June amid allegations that Dale Rathke, the brother of ACORN founder Wade Rathke, had embezzled nearly $1 million. This week, as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops met in Baltimore, Maryland, the campaign's chairman said it was cutting all ties with the group."We simply had too many questions and concerns to permit further CCHD funding of ACORN groups," Roger Morin, the auxiliary bishop of New Orleans, Louisiana, told his colleagues in a letter to the conference.I guess it was too much trouble for auxiliary bishop Morin to do a little investigating into this and found out what I discovered here, notably? The head of a foundation that has funne...

Biden loses Obama the Catholic vote
2008-09-19 18:16:00 I’ve often wondered how Catholics could elect Democrats in the last 40 years or so. That would seem to have been rendered a moot point this cycle, as Gerald Warner observes: Missed it by THAT MUCH Remember, you read it here first: on September 11 this blog reported a mounting backlash from Catholic bishops against Biden, Barack Obama’s “Catholic” pro-abortion running mate. At that time I estimated eight bishops had come out to denounce Biden; the total is now 55. Beyond that, Biden is being trashed across every state of the Union by Catholic newspapers, TV and radio stations, and blogs. It is a tsunami of rejection. The story has now hit the secular media. Last Saturday Time magazine asked: “Does Biden Have a Catholic Problem?” By Wednesday the issue had moved onto the front page of the New York Times. Joe the Jinx has blown it, big time. Biden has only himself to blame: he started this war, with his notoriously undisciplined mouth. He knew t...
