Institutional Sex Corruption: Plight of Roman Catholic Church and Sathya Sa
2010-09-19 01:00:00 In the face of far too powerful, worldwide exposure of endemic Roman Catholic Church corruption, Pope Benedict XVI has called for reconciliation. Only at this chronically late hour, and in the face of terrible and universal threat to his institution's survival, does he begin to treat sexual abuse as a reportable crime, and make apologies, and require his officials to take meaningful actions against the sexual abuse that the world now nows is rampant in his Church. It is the year 2010 and yet official communiques coming from the Vatican and other official sections of the Roman Catholic Church almost make it sound as though decades of sexual abuse complaints involving priests all over the world were something new. There may be contrite tears now, and official cries for reconciliation. But where were these down the decades of victims' anguish? The Sathya Sai Organization still has not come to this point. It too has lain low. It too has turned a hard heart of the cries of individua...
Priest Abuse. Long-denied Justice Catching Up In Australia
2010-05-17 22:13:00 The gradual, but terribly long-delayed victory of those activists who have spoken out about sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church is happening. Unfortunately, organizations which also have long histories of perpetuating cover up frequently evade scrutiny. The Sathya Sai Organization, with its immense wealth and international outreach, is but one of many. I commend this material from our national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. I have excerpted this article of last night, which is accompanied by video footage. No percipient reader in the world can now doubt that the Vatican is enaged in massive efforts at damage control. It cannot now of course deny its incredibly appalling record. The notion of 'coming clean' - which in certain respects the Roman Catholic Church is beginning to do - becomes the more strange when one considers that the dirt an the hiding of the dirt have been endemic for so long. In this light, the notion that we now live in 2010 becom...
Sexual Abuse Priests. What?! The Pope Never Knew?
2010-03-28 01:37:00 Some international commentators opine that there is a net of terrible revelation closing in on Pope Benedict XVI. One revelation after another indicates that he has for many years known about the endemic sexual abuses, both of children and adults, happening within the Roman Catholic Church. And that he has, all along, failed with any probity to act. To the contrary, he has called, along, for secrecy. (I shall shortly turn to the mounting allegations of massive cover up of sexual abuse by the Boy Scout's of America) If any should think that the Vatican has not been for centuries, and is to this day, a heavy hitter in the murky world of realpolitik, they have not paused to read even the standard historical accounts.
Roman Catholics? Deep Concern At Pope?s Apology. But He Is Way Ahead Of Ind
2010-03-23 04:57:00 It is enormously instructive to watch the unfolding saga of papal apology for clergy sexual abuse. Large numbers of both Roman Catholics and others round the world have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Pope's apology. They say that it goes nowhere far enough, and does not address acute issues of crime and punishment.
Standing Up To Cultic Monoliths. (Sathya Sai Baba Organization Example)
2010-03-16 23:33:00 Confronted by the smallest questioning of Sathya Sai Baba, his defenders commonly refer to instances such as the miracles he is supposed to have performed. Or indeed those phenomena which have happened beyond his physical presence but been related to him in some way. Yet there is much proof that he routinely fakes these performances. Many of his devotees know that he has bungled various "miracles"; however, they take refuge in such notions as that he is only testing their faith. They will not examine the large corpus of evidence that exposes him, as the BBC did with its cameras in 2004. See: BBC Cameras Catch Sai Baba Cheating With Gold Sivalingam. A person who's studied the abuse crisis in the Church as I have, a little, will also realize that abuse occurs, tragically, anywhere authority intersects weakness, and especially where men encounter potential sexual victims (see links below). We all feel for the victims, and nobody is excusing misconduct, so lets get that out of the way. Now, what hurt the Church's reputation is the seeming lack of action on the part of the Church hierarchy- really, if you're a hierarchical institution, the people on top better be good. By not immediately dismissing bad priests and bishops, the Church gave the impression that it wasn't concerned about or that it even condoned what was going on. Pope on the proper relationship between man and nature
2009-12-16 18:25:00 tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.nelsonguirado.com/i-ndex.php/religion/2009/12/16/po-pe-on-the-proper-relationship-b-etween-man-and-nature';tweetmem-e_service = 'bit.ly';As Anne Applebaum notices and Diane Francis' anti-person screed proves, nature worship leads to a diminution of man's place in the world. It's logical, actually: 1. If desiring nature to be preserved as it is now or restore it to a pre-human state is the greatest good. 2. and, if people are just one creature amongst many, without any more natural worth than nature itself. 3. and, if man is using more than his share of resources or damaging the earth so that 1 is impossible. 4. then, man's power to destroy needs to diminish. We can do this two ways, by reducing the number of people or limiting each person's engagement with nature. Christianity teaches us that man is the ultimate physical creation (angels are spirit) and infinitely more valuable than animals by virtue of our being created in God's image, a...

Ireland Acts On Clergy Sexual Abuse. India Does Not Act On Sathya Sai Baba
2009-11-27 00:37:00 My readers may well have a keen sense of déjà vu as they read the piece on Ireland. Inescapably one thinks of Sathya Sai Baba, his key officials in the international Sathya Sai Organization and successive local, state and central governments in India. All have have profoundly covered up in regard to both allegations of Sai Baba's (and some of his servitors') longtime, serial sexual abuse of boys and young men, and many other gravely serious wrongdoings. Ireland's Justice Minister, Dermot Ahern, appears determined to act strongly. The Guardian reports, "Ahern said there should be no hiding place for the abusers even if they wore a clerical collar. "The persons who committed these dreadful crimes ? no matter when they happened ? will continue to be pursued" "Even if they wore a clerical collar"?!
Penn and Teller anti-Catholics
2009-09-02 06:30:00 It's better to be loved than hated. This is only true if you're loved and hated for the correct reasons. Conversely, it's better to be hated than loved if one is hated unjustly and doesn't truly merit love. I take great pride in my Catholic faith when somebody, in order to attack it, has to lie. Such is the case with Penn and Teller's show on the Vatican. The funny thing is that there are some legitimate, if less dramatic, criticisms they could have made. Instead, they went for the conspiracy theorist, "all evil flows from..." angle. Bill Donohue has a response here. I plan on asking for a rebuke of lies (only) from CBS representative Nancy Tellem: nancy.tellem@tvc.cbs.com I don't have time to go over the show, but let me just rebut one: the Church has saved millions of lives in Africa because of her teachings on condoms and chastity. The Obama Candidacy and Race
2008-10-12 10:33:00 Instead of laying out my position on this issue, I will just let a friend of mine lay it out for me. His name is Richard Allinger, and he is a Christian layworker out of Detroit, Michigan. I think he's also a worker at the GM plant there.Richard Allinger works at the General Motors plant in Flint, Michigan. He has a good relationship with the Black religious leadership in the area and he takes regular trips to the Holy Land for Christian reasons.Richard Allinger with some of the local members of the Detroit churches, Black and White. He's also involved with a "peace village" on the border of the Palestinian territories and Israel. I'm not sure what it going on there, but a bunch of Arabs and Jews have moved there in order to live in peace and try to set an example for others that Arabs and Jews can live in peace and harmony. I don't know about the theory in general, but things in the village seem to be working out fine. He's an interesting fellow because he's a very religious Chr...

3 Reasons Why Catholicism is Great
2008-08-12 22:00:00 Being a cradle Catholic/Revert, I've had the privilege of seeing the Catholic Church from many angles, both in support of and against her at times. Overall, I've continually come to appreciate the Church in more ways as I get older. Here are just 3 ideas that come to mind that illustrate why the Catholic Church is, for lack of a better word, great! They are not meant to be exhaustive, or even an argumentative proof, but are just some thoughts aimed at generating mental conversation. Catholicism is Founded on Faith and Reason I cannot count how many times I've spoken to people that assume that Catholics have no concept of logic and reasoning. When discussing an ethical or moral... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Exploring Catholicism: Part 2
2008-05-22 19:22:00 [also see Part 1]I have read some catholic apologetics on this stuff and they always show new scriptures, but I would like to understand how Romans 10 I think it is where it says ? If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.? Or the verse John wrote how he ?wrote all these things that you might know you have eternal life.? Or other verses like it fit into the Catholic idea of salvation. Also any others you can think of, those were the ones off the top of my head.First, we have to keep in mind that we are discussing "Once Saved, Always Saved," not sola fide ("faith alone" saves). Now, you cited Rom 10:9 and 1 Jn 5:13. "Fluffy" added Rom 8:1 and Eph 2:8-9 in her comment on Part 1. Time does not permit for me to respond to every passage that Protestants use to support OSAS, but I can respond to these. I have links to articles that should adequately address the rest.First, chapter 8 of Paul's letter to the Roma...
Exploring Catholicism: Part 1
2008-05-20 19:38:00 I have recently began a conversation, via email, with someone who is considering a return to the faith of his youth, after being away from Catholicism since high school. He has allowed me to post our conversation on my blog, with the hope that others may be able to benefit from it as well. Here is our first exchange.Pax Christi,phatcatholic- - - - - - - - - -What is the plan of salvation according to the Catholic church? again I get mixed up what I have heard from the Catholic church and from anti-Catholics, Is there assurance of salvation? I have heard that there is not, yet I was at a Catholic funeral recently and they were very strongly pronouncing that the deceiced was with God. If there is what is it based on?Well, Catholics believe that salvation is a process of sanctification that culminates in eternal life with God after death. We are not ultimately "saved" until we die in union with Christ. This means that there is no "assurance of salvation" or "once-saved-always-saved" un...
Crosswalking Catholicism
2008-05-16 18:47:00 You all may be familiar with a Protestant website called Crosswalk. Many people, including myself, use their "Bible Study Tools" for Scripture study because they include various translations of Scripture, along with a wide variety of commentaries, concordances, dictionaries, encyclopedias, lexicons, and other reference works. It really is an amazingly helful website. At any rate, I noticed today an article on their homepage entitled, "Why Do Catholics Have a Pope?", by Sarah Jennings (Crosswalk.com Family Editor). Of course, that sparked my interest, so I gave it a read. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it was THE most accurate explanation of the papacy by a Protestant that I had ever read! What a relief!!Honestly, I expected the usual misunderstandings: Catholics worship the pope, the pope thinks he is Jesus on earth, the pope replaces Jesus as head of the Church, everything the pope says is inspired by the Holy Spirit, the pope can do no wrong, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. T...
Catholicism In the 21st century…Everything Old Is New Again!
2008-05-05 20:58:00 TIME magazine is indicating that the recent visit by Pope Benedict XVI has provided the final blow to the liberalist movement in the Catholic Church in the United States. Cleveland Man Incensed Over Catholicism Targeted In The Media
2008-05-03 00:42:00 Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland businessman - Jewish, not Catholic - is fighting mad about the seemingly concentrated effort by the media to disparage the Catholic Church in the United States. The following are excerpts of a speech by well-known Cleveland businessman Mr. Miller at the City Club of Cleveland, given on Thursday, March 6. Even though of the Jewish faith, Miller has been a staunch supporter of the Cleveland Diocese and Bishop Anthony Pilla. It was published in the May-June issue of the Buckeye Bulletin.
Photoshop Contest: Marlboro Product Placement Ad and the Catholic Church
2008-04-25 05:38:00 Catholicism and its traditions have dominated the news following the Pope's recent visit to the U.S (quite justifiably, all kidding aside). So now's the time to roll out the best product placement for the church I've ever seen. Advertising is a bizarre business (believe me I do it every day for a living) and product placements, in my mind, generally are obvious and annoying. That's what's so great about this theater of the absurd Photoshop. Thank goodness the Pope's advance men covered up every single Yankee stadium sign before Sunday's mass.
Catholicism V Scientology
2008-04-19 00:59:00 Who would win in this battle? Well the Catholic Church has the Pope, while the Scientology movement has Tom Cruise. Being agnostic, I would call this a tie. Vatican: Islam Has "Overtaken" Catholicism
2008-03-31 02:42:00 "For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us," Monsignor Vittorio Formenti said in an interview with the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. Formenti compiles the Vatican's yearbook. He said that Catholics accounted for 17.4 percent of the world population - a stable percentage - while Muslims were at 19.2 percent."It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make a lot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer," the monsignor said.Formenti said that the data refer to 2006. The figures on Muslims were put together by Muslim countries and then provided to the United Nations, he said, adding that the Vatican could only vouch for its own data. When considering all Christians and not just Catholics, Christians make up 33 percent of the world population, Formenti said.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Italy: Prominent Muslim Converts to Catholicism
2008-03-24 01:39:00 When will the death threats begin? Also will Italy see the importance of protecting this man? Debbie Schlussel has a great post on this story. love the story of Magdi Allam, the pro-Israel, anti-HAMAS, non-practicing Muslim, who, today, was converted by the Pope to Catholicism. He represents the fact that the only "moderate" Muslims are non-practicing ones and former ones.Magdi Allam is brave, indeed, as his life has already been in danger for his courageous views, but now, he's become the ultimate apostate, converting away from Islam at the hands of the Pope and in a publicly broadcast ceremony:An Egyptian-born, non-practicing Muslim who is married to a Catholic, Magdi Allam infuriated some Muslims with his books and columns in the newspaper Corriere della Sera newspaper, where he is a deputy editor. Scriptural Authority for the Catholic Church
2008-03-16 14:00:00 I have recently been quite taken back by Catholic apologists who try to claim that the foundation of their faith, traditions, and dogma is the Bible. In fact, I have seen these Catholics challenge others to prove that their religion is not based on God's Word. Yet it takes only a casual look at the facts to see that they are not built upon the doctrines and practices outlined in the Scriptures and that the official Catholic Church doesn't pretend to be.?Thus it comes about that the Church does not draw her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Hence, both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honoured with equal feelings of devotion and reverence? (Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Chap. 2, 9, p. 682).Questions For Our Catholic FriendsWhere in the Bible do we find Peter assuming and exercising the role of a Catholic pope? The Catholic Church or The Bible
2008-03-04 13:34:00 Throughout the ages, the Catholic church has continued to evolve into the religious organization that it is today. They have, over time, replaced many of the key doctrines that Christ taught with traditions that counsels and pope's have enacted. The Catholic church has, in general, fallen guilty of the same crimes as the pharisees of Jesus' day. They have crafted a religion based on the philosophies of sinful men rather than relying on the finished work of God's Word. Just as the pharisees, the Catholic Church has fallen hard from where God had once intended."Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men... And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition." ~ Mark 7:7-9The Catholic Church has blatantly replaced God's commandments with their own dogma. For us to make this strong assertion, however, demands that we ...

Neuhaus on Catholicism and the American Church Climate
2008-01-22 14:57:00 Americans are notorious church-hoppers. Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, Presbyterian---it doesn't seem to make much difference to millions of American Christians. Some would say there is nothing 'notorious' about that at all. Don't we pride ourselves on being a free-market society in which consumer choice is king? Why shouldn't there be a free market also in religion---or, as it is said today, in 'spiritual preferences'? Church-hopping is simply church-shopping in search of a 'spirituality that meets my needs.' There was a time not long ago when denominational identity was much more than a matter of individual preference: 'I come from a long line of Presbyterians,' one heard it said. (Or Lutherans, or Episcopalians, or Baptists, or whatever.) Back then, it was not unusual for people to tell you why their church was right and others were wrong about issues such as infant baptism, or the Real Presence of Christ in the Lord's Supper, or about God's predest...

The controversy surrounding The Golden Compass has all but guaranteed block
2007-12-04 21:01:00 I’m an avid reader and movie watcher, and I enjoy the occasional escape into things that aren’t hard to read or understand. This is why I’ve enjoyed the Harry Potter novels and why, when it was suggested to me a number of years ago, I read the entire His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman. The first novel, The Golden Compass, has been made into a movie that officially hits the theaters this Friday. And, if the sheer volume of news about the movie is any indication, it will be the blockbuster of the 2007 holiday season. The reason is that a number of Christian groups (mostly Catholic) have demanded that their adherents boycott the movie, and in so doing have given it a massive amount of free news publicity. Have these people learned nothing? Seriously, the best way to guarantee that people expose themselves to something is to ban, boycott, or otherwise protest it. The more people who hate something and want you to hate it too, the more other people want ...
