Caucuses

End the Tyranny of Caucuses!
2008-04-03 14:04:00
Let's look ahead to November's general election and assume, as is now likely, that Barack Obama wins the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. But let's also make one further assumption: Obama loses to John McCain and the Democrats blow their best chance to recapture the White House in twelve years. Be honest: it could happen. The polls are pretty much dead even right now, and the Republicans have an undeniable Electoral College advantage.I'm not predicting an Obama defeat, you understand. Obviously, unfavorable economic news on top of foreign policy failure typically bodes poorly for the incumbent party and its nominee. And John McCain is perceived by many as an old guy who knows less about economics than the average eBay bidder. Plus, Obama is eloquent, inspiring, he's the choice of a new generation (or was that Pepsi?), etc., etc., etc.Still, the scenario by which Obama loses remains fairly easy to envision, even without a new and devastating terrorist attack. While t...

Clintons, Caucuses, and Superdelegates: Connect the Dots
2008-02-13 00:42:00
Dan Drezner writes: Over the past few days, the Clinton campaign has made the following two arguments: a) Caucuses don’t really count as much as primaries because, “the caucus system is undemocratic and caters mostly to party activists.” b) The superdelegates — which consist only primarily of party activists — ...

Markos Moulitsas, founder of the Daily Kos website, has one of the savviest political minds in the liberal blogosphere. He recognized the transformative potential of the internet while most party pros were still learning to master their Hotmail accounts. Moulitsas knows his way around electoral politics and quite obviously recognizes the difference between a primary election and a caucus. Sunday afternoon, however, he made the following statement:"Obama should win [the Maine caucuses] by double digits which would be a stunning defeat for a Clinton campaign that by all reports should've been able to replicate its New Hampshire success in this state."New Hampshire, of course, held a primary election—not a caucus—last month in which Hillary Clinton shocked the pollsters by defying their predictions and defeating Barack Obama rather handily. Had Maine, which shares its western border with New Hampshire, decided to inaugurate its own primary, Moulitsas's comparison would have been ...

Caucuses? just like blogging? but face to face
2008-02-10 04:45:00
Today I headed down to the local Elks Club to Caucus in Washington State’s 25th Legislative District. I have never felt so patriotic in my life. The cars were lined up in the street, with people parking their Dodge Ram’s in ditches and hopping through mud puddles and blackberry bushes in order to make it to the 1:00pm event. ...

Ron Paul has a shot at winning Maine caucuses
2008-02-02 01:01:00
Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has a couple of things going for him at this weekend's Republican caucuses: a band of highly motivated supporters and a natural appeal to Maine's like-minded independents. His stop in the state earlier this week also made him the only presidential contender from either party to visit before the caucuses. "I think that (because) he's paid attention to Maine, he'll be rewarded," R. Kenneth Lindell, Paul's campaign coordinator in Maine, said Thursday. Ron Paul certainly has a very large following on the internet, however, it hasn't translated into votes, and that's something that no politician can do without.  With Barack Obama having a big surge in popularity, I doubt Dr. Paul will be in the race for the Republican nomination much longer.  Although, Dr. Paul has said in the past that he would consider running as an independent.  I certainly respect his years of military service as well as his years as a physician, however,...

Clinton and Romney win Nevada caucuses
2008-01-20 01:41:00
Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney won the Nevada caucuses today. For Clinton, who won as a Democrat, this is a major push forward, but for Barack Obama, her chief rival, this is a major blow. Mitt Romney’s Republican win is being called an “easy win,” mainly because his rivals were busy campaigning in South Carolina.

Tin blobs, Iowa caucuses, Presidential election
2008-01-07 01:40:00
My faith in the universe has been restored. I found the Finnish tin blob! I see this as a good sign - a sign of a happy, productive, and seek-and-ye-shall-find year.Bring it.I'm hungry as the dickin's (?) (dicken's). (Where the hell did that saying come from?)Here is a photo I took of Daisy in Oregon. Why? Because I like it:In other random news:My parents were ROCKSTARS! on CSPAN on Tuesday night. Perhaps you saw my dad in all of his Iowa caucus splendor? This is a photo of him in his office to jog your memory. Yes, there is train paraphernalia (this is what the spell checker told me, but I don't believe it) everywhere. I watched the Presidential debates last night. I love this shit. At one time I was a political science major because I love this shit. The debates did nothing to sway me. If anything, I'm less enthused by some of the candidates I thought I might support. It has been confirmed, however, that Mitt Romney is Satan.I will definitely not vote for a Republican. Take th...

Sports and politics, are they really that different. Do they not both make the average man feel more important than he actually is, do they not both get relentless media coverage, do some women not understand either(just joking). You look at the presidential primaries and the NFL playoff picture
