2009-08-05 00:35:00 Today President Barack Obama turns 48. Let's pretend, for a moment, that he doesn't have an endless list of extremely important things to do and can actually take the time to go out and celebrate. What should he do? If you were President, how would you celebrate your birthday? What would be the best way for Obama to incorporate Chicago pride into the festivities? Goose Island beer? Chicago-style hot dogs? A trip back home to do as so many other celebs do and hit up Rush Street? Let us know!...
Celebrate My New Baby With Free Coffee and a Taco
2009-07-13 22:36:00 So, I had me a baby. So far, everything he has eaten has been free, so I'm liking him just fine. But if your kids are not eating free at the old mammary buffet, you can feed them for free tomorrow, as long as they like fish tacos. Long John Silver is giving away free fish tacos Tuesday, July 14, from opening until 2:30 p.m. And if you're a new parent like me or just sleep like one, don't forget that today's a free mocha Monday at McDonld's. Celebrate!
2009-07-12 07:33:00 There are times blogging is not about food, travels and the pursuit of all things sweet. It's about the people. How they come to have a special place in your heart no matter how far away they are or how frequent the interactions may be. Yes, I will post plenty of sweet recipes next week but today I want to stop and celebrate. The picture above is dedicated my dear friend Barbara of Winos and Foodies to celebrate the end of her chemotherapy. I've entitled it "Reach". A couple of years ago, Barbara posted a picture of her dancing shoes on New Year's Eve and these words "Dance like no one is watching" while she was still going through life with cancer, its ups and downs and all that it affects. It inspired me. It moved me. It was "so Barbara". Strong, funny, witty. I shot this one thinking of her dancing shoes. She inspires me to stay strong, focused and to try to reach new heights everyday.Today a few of us are also reaching out beyond our screens to extend a virtual hug to Barbara ...

Blackhawks gather to celebrate promise and questions
2009-07-09 19:05:00 Just a week left before the Blackhawks convention puts a serious strain on the available alcohol resources in the Loop. So there is no time like the present to start jotting down those sobering questions you might forget later in a vodka/whiskey/beer/scotch/schna-pps haze to ask Rocky Wirtz, John McDonough, Dale Tallon, Joel Quenneville or your player of choice. Stream of consciousness questioning has always been one of my strengths, because you never need to focus longer than it takes to down a shot and you expect to be lied to. And you can always make up your own answers if you don't like the stammers you get. Let's begin with some scattershot queries that should pepper the proceedings at...

This Weekend: Celebrate Fairfax
2009-06-04 18:38:00 For those of you that live in the DC area (or elsewhere), it's time for my annual post about why you should attend Celebrate Fairfax . If you are unfamiliar with the festival, here are the basics: Celebrate Fairfax, Northern Virginia?s largest community-wide celebration, takes place this weekend, June 5-7, 2009, at the Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax, Virginia. The festival features dozens of live concerts on five stages, an interactive SciTech Center and Children?s Avenue, fireworks Friday and Saturday night, hundreds of exhibitors and crafters and more. This year?s headliners (which I mentioned in March) include Blues Traveler, The Fixx, Phil Vassar and The Old Skool All-Stars (Tone Loc, Naughty by Nature and The Sugar Hill Gang). Plus, there?s lots of great food options (mmmm; funnel cake!).I wrote about this when the discounted tickets went on sale, but I think it is worth repeating. If you are 11 or older, you will pay $12 at the gate for admission to the festival....

How did you celebrate Mother’s Day? Did you go to a Swine Flu party, com
2009-05-10 14:14:00 In the category of “signs of the time”:1. The CDC is not only concerned about the outbreak of the swine flu, they are concerned about the sudden outbreak of “swine flu” parties. It seems that several moms have decided it is best to expose their children to the current mild (?) case of swine flu, allowing little Johnny to build up immunity now. Later this year when a more virulent form of the virus surfaces (?), their child will be protected. Maybe the children need protection from mom! Imagine the Mother’s Day card: Thank you mom for exposing me to the virus! I can tell you care!By the way, the CDC actually has a recommendation about swine flu parties on their website (www.cdc.gov)."Swine flu parties" are gatherings during which people have close contact with a person who has novel H1N1 flu in order to become infected with the virus. The intent of these parties is to become infected with what for many people has been a mild disease, in the hope of having natural immunity t...

Celebrate Fairfax Tickets
2009-05-07 14:43:00 So I totally missed the fact that there is a great deal on tickets to this year?s Celebrate Fairfax through today. Adult admission tickets for the June 5-7, 2009 festival are on sale at Celebrate Fairfax?s website for only $7. That?s right, $7! When was the last time you paid $7 to see a concert? Ticketmaster fees alone are generally much more than $7. For $7, you can see Blues Traveler on Friday, June 5th or Phil Vassar on Sunday, June 7th. You can also spend $7 to see the Old Skool All-Stars of Tone Loc, Naughty by Nature and Sugar Hill Gang plus The Fixx on Saturday, June 6th.*Plus, there is much more to Celebrate Fairfax than just the headliners including dozens of local artists, nightly fireworks, approximately 400 exhibitors, vendors and crafters and an interactive SciTech Center. If you happen to read this after today (Thursday, May 7), don?t worry. There are still discounted tickets available prior to the festival, just not as good as $7.* The Fixx is not part of the...

INK BLAST | AFRO-LATINAS TO CELEBRATE DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
2009-02-27 22:05:00 About half way through this month, it hit me that I had not ever considered whether Black Latinos, some of whom prefer to be called Afro-Latinos, are or should be part of the celebration of Black History Month. (Might be because I, myself, am what Dominicans affectionately call jaba [?high-yellow? might be the vernacular translation]. I am, therefore, uniquely unqualified to discuss the nuanced particularities of being Afro anything.) No matter. Despite not having any cultural connoisseurs or hip historians to consult, I decided to add my own small, but meaningful celebration to this auspicious month. Let?s hear it for my Afro-Latina sisters doing their damn thing!

What a Great Time to Celebrate Black History!
2009-02-02 16:04:00 I agree with a lot of people who don't really get why Black History is relegated to one month. Black history is a huge part of American history and really should be recognized as such. However, it is such a beautiful time right now to celebrate Black history when so many Black people are currently making history! Barack Obama, Pittsburgh Steelers young coach, Mike Tomlin, *UPDATED* Eric Holder as the first African American Attorney General, and even though I don't agree with many of his views, Michael Steele was recently elected as the first African American RNC Chair, making history. But none of these people would have even had the opportunity if it hadn't been for the ones that went before. The countless ones who went before us fought hard to make the world a better place for future generations.Black History Month has added meaning in 2009 [USA Today]

The Best Holiday That Eventually We Won't Really Celebrate At All.
2008-11-11 15:19:00 Ah, Thanksgiving. The forgotten middle child of the holiday season.Last night, I saw a commercial for, of all things, Thanksgiving. The commercial even managed to imply that there was a little more to Thanksgiving than simply eating a lot -- the basic purpose of the holiday, as Jim Gaffigan has so hilariously pointed out in the past. There's not many commercials for Thanksgiving, especially if you don't count (as I don't) commercials from grocery stores that simply use Thanksgiving as a launching pad for trying to sell you two-for-one bags of potato chips; over the next two weeks, grocery stores will tell you to make your Thanksgiving extra special by buying potato chips. Then Christmas will need a boost via the magic of almonds. Then you'll see an advertisement telling you that it's time to "Inaugurate a new snack habit with beef jerky from Sentry."In fact, the commercial that I saw last night-- which was very food-centric but not totally food-centric -- was the only Thank...
Papalote Students Celebrate the Festival of San Martin
2008-11-09 01:45:00 Every November, closely following Dia de los Muertos, the students of El Papalote School participate in a traditional celebration of San Martin. This festival, also known as Martinmas, recognizes Martin, originally a soldier in Roman army in the 4th century. The legends tells that one freezing winter night he came upon a poor beggar, half-naked and suffering in the cold. Martin took off his own heavy cloak and cut it in half with his sword, giving half to the shivering beggar. That night, Jesus appeared in Martin's dream, wrapped in the same piece of cloak that Martin had given the beggar, and said to the angels: “Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptised; he has clothed me.” From that moment on, Martin dedicated his life to serving God and helping those in need. He ultimately became the patron saint of beggars, drunks and outcasts, dedicating his life to caring for those on the fringe of society...
