Does (Spam|Phishing) Filtering == Email Censoring?
2009-07-14 15:32:00 I was reading about the Gmail Labs option to display a key icon if the sender's domain is signed using DKIM and the sender is eBay or PayPal. This allows you to quickly verify if the email is legitimate by looking at the icon. Now it apparently takes some work for a domain to be ...

China's Internet Censoring. Hate To Say I Told You So, But I Told You
2009-06-30 17:07:00 Back when the media was getting all hot and heavy (sexual reference intended) on China's plans to require internet filtering software, I did a post, entitled, "Two China Things Of Which We Dare Not Speak (And Sex Is Not One of Them)." In that post, I explained why we virtually never write about proposed laws and why I had not written anything on the filtering software. I gave the following reasons: I do not like writing about proposed laws for the following reasons: 1. There are so many laws already on the books and being enforced that need coverage more. Laws on the books will impact you right now. Proposed laws may or may not ever come into being. 2. China has a very real habit of saying it will institute a new law and then never doing so. It floats new laws to gauge reaction. If the reaction is negative, the law oftentimes never comes into being. 3. China has a very real habit of instituting new laws and then never enforcing them. This often happens when the new law is neg...

Everything you wanted to know about online censoring and filtering
2008-05-26 17:53:00 Even wonder what you?re not getting access to on the internet? New technologies and new powers that be are increasingly capable of filtering websites from online use. A new book from MIT Press Access Denied gives the skinny on internet censoring strategies and motivations. From a review at neural.it: Ten OpenNet Initiative (ONI) researchers were involved in this seminal report for a few years, focusing on general internet filtering strategies and motivations, and analyzing the filtering conditions and legal/ethical tactics state by state .. Every sensitive country has its own mix of motivations and consequent strategies. So, showing a warning or a disguising error web page is a political choice, directly reflecting the government policies, as well as using passwords, IP classes or entire services (Skype) as the censorship technical targets. Scanning the different filtering politics is like viewing a social and political atlas, revealing what a formal territory fear most. And t...

PHOTOBUCKET SAYS IT ERRED IN CENSORING DIAPERED BABIES
2008-03-13 23:09:00 Wow, that was fast! I contacted Photobucket parent Fox Interactive early Thursday to find out why the site censored a bunch of photos of babies in diapers posted by diaper company Good Mama Diapers. In separate e-mails, a Fox spokesman and Photobucket customer support said the hundreds of photos were deleted because they depicted "nudity" in violation of the site's terms of use. Hours later I received word from Good Mama Diapers that Photobucket admits that it erroneously dumped the photos. "My team has reviewed the images that were tossed in your account and it was determined that the images that were removed from your account should not have been removed. We have the images available to restore and are currently in the process of restoring them. Please accept our sincere apologies for the error," writes Monica M. Massad, content moderation manager at Photobucket, in an e-mail. "It is true that we reviewed our content moderation guidelines to make sure it was in line wi...
Forbidden Words: Taboo and the Censoring of Language
2008-03-06 08:09:00 Cambridge University Press (November 20, 2006) ISBN: 0521525640 PDF 314 pages 1,9 MbMany words and expressions are viewed as 'taboo', such as those used to describe sex, our bodies and their functions, and those used to insult other people. This book provides a fascinating insight into taboo language and its role in everyday life. It looks at the ways we use language to be polite or impolite, politically correct or offensive, depending on whether we are 'sweet-talking', 'straight-talking' or being deliberately rude. Using a range of colourful examples, it shows how we use language playfully and figuratively in order to swear, to insult, and also to be politically correct, and what our motivations are for doing so. It goes on to examine the differences between institutionalized censorship and the ways individuals censor their own language. Lively and revealing, Forbidden Words will fascinate anyone who is interested in how and why we use and avoid taboos in daily conversation. ...
Censoring The Whistle-blowers
2008-02-19 22:44:00 Hey, why not kick them off the internet too? According to yesterday's article by the BBC, a court in California just ruled that all traces of a website called Wikileaks be removed from the internet. The website was founded in 2006 as a means for whistle-blowers to "anonymously post government and corporate documents." It claims to have published more than 1.2 million. Though there seems to be clear potential for abuse, especially when it comes to the security of government documents, the site had equal potential as a positive watchdog endeavor. The circumstances surrounding the site's shutdown are especially dubious. The case was filed by Julius Baer, a Swiss banking group. Wikileaks recently posted several documents which "allegedly reveal that the bank was involved with money laundering and tax evasion." Wikilinks did not have an attorney present at the hearing, nor were they there themselves. The reason? Apparently they were only given a few hours notice. By e-mail. How outrage...

Florida Republican Debate: MSNBC Joins Media Censoring Ron Paul
2008-01-25 06:50:00 We couldn't have been more thoroughly disgusted by tonight's Republican debate in Boca Raton, Florida. MSNBC broadcast a live, 90-minute debate with Republican candidates Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Ron Paul, and Mitt Romney. And we put that in alphabetical order, though you will probably never see it written that way in the mainstream media.

Skype censoring certain computer activities
2007-12-01 05:20:00 As far as I can see, this is one of the most serious accusations addressed to Skype as the president of Dynamic Internet Technology accuses the application of censoring certain computer activities. Bill Xia is a provider of specialized software which helps the local Internet consumers bypass thegovernments' filters and access the restricted websites. In case you didn't know, the Chinese authorities are very exigent when it comes to the content accessed by the local users so they are trying anything it is possible to restrict certain websites. Sometimes, the government demands the help of the Internet pages or software solutions in order to do that, Skype being only one of those selected.Bill Xia sustains Skype supports the government in censoring the content and moreover, it installs a hidden process on users' computer which blocks certain words from being sent over the Internet. Is Facebook Really Censoring Search When It Suits Them?
2007-11-23 09:32:00 Earlier this month I wrote a blog post showing that a search for presidential candidate “Ron Paul” in Facebook Groups yields zero results. Facebook blamed the problem on a bug, which was corrected. But a new issue may be harder to explain. On Tuesday, scores of mainstream press organizations (see WSJ, NYT, LATimes, CNET, AP, etc.). and bloggers reported on a privacy issue around part of Facebook’s new advertising platform. MoveOn.org was leading the charge, and created a petition to demand Facebook not disclose personal information about a user without their explicit consent. But now a side story is developing around the issue that relates to search censoring, again, at Facebook. Naturally all the press on the issue led people to go to Facebook to find the group MoveOn set up to organize their opposition to Facebook’s current privacy policy on this issue. The group, which now has over 12,000 members, could not be located via search. Yesterday a search in Facebook ...

censoring bullshit from blogrush
2007-11-21 18:01:00 I cannot believe it. Blogrush really didn't put my last post about them on the network. That is such bullshit! I should be able to write about whatever I want without them censoring what they put on the widget. Who cares if I said something about them? They shouldn't be able to just skip over the posts they don't want to display. This isn't the first time they've skipped over my posts either. Every time I use a title that is too risque' they omit it from the network. I was waiting to take the widget off my site because I wanted to see if they really were going to leave it out and they sure as hell did. When I get home today, it's gone. Blogrush SUCKS.

2007-10-13 16:30:00 "Censoring speech, to me, is a crime of Orwellian proportions. There is never a reason to do it, other than, you know, shouting fire in a crowded theatre, blah blah. And yes, I understand not allowing talk on a blog is not the same as denying someone's first amendment rights... but if you are going to compare calling someone a nazi to suppressing their entire rights to speech, I gotta say... well, WOW. "Thak you, Daisy. The million justifications for censorship have really been getting to me too. Stunting speech is not a feminist value. (Or if it is somehow necessary to hold these views in addition to views that women should be respected in order to be a feminist, fuck feminism, as far as I'm concerned.)

Microsoft Censoring .info domains in MSN Messenger
2007-08-05 18:45:00 As most regular readers know, I own CSS3.info, and because of that, I talk quite a bit about it on MSN messenger. Recently, I started getting problems when I was sending links with css3.info in it to my contacts. Tonight, after doing a bit more research, I found out that ALL .info domains are being censored in Messenger. For some silly reason, Microsoft seems to think that all .info domains are bad. .biz domains don’t get censored though…Now it has been known for quite a while that MSN censors URL’s, as covered here for instance, but I had not ever heard of them censoring out complete TLD’s… This is, IMHO, insane… Come on Microsoft, stop doing this sort of nonsense!Source: JoostdeValk
Daily Kos Tries to Explain Censoring Soldier
2007-08-05 17:43:00 It took them a couple of days to get the spin together, but we now have an official position on the incident at the ‘Military and Progressives’ panel at YearlyKos, from an employee of VoteVets, whose founder shouted down and threatened that soldier: Daily Kos: What Really Happened at the YearlyKos Military Panel. It’s apparently their job to enforce military regulations—when it suits them, anyway. The bottom line is this: The sergeant in uniform was completely out of line as far as the military is concerned. The fact that he did what he did reflected on the entire Army and I think that’s what upset Jon the most. With obligatory “chickenhawk” slurs—the logically empty argument they never seem to get tired of. The conservative bloggers who’ve tried to make Jon look bad over this—like Michelle Malkin, Matt Drudge, and others—have no concept of this. Just like they have no concept of war in general. None of them has e...

Strawpoll08.com censoring some politics
2007-05-02 21:52:00 So, I got an email from a libertarian friend who supports Ron Paul for president. I'm nowhere close to deciding who I'll support, but I like to keep an open mind. Apparently not everyone does. Go check out http://www.strawpoll08.com, where virtually every nutcase in the country is listed on the poll for president except Ron Paul. No big deal, I guess, except that their chat script goes in every couple minutes and deletes any mention of him. So I went to check it out, and it was true. People would type his name in on a comment, and a moment later -- poof! Any item that had the words Ron Paul in it disappeared. Here's a screen shot: As you can see, I brought it to the attention of the moderator. A moment later, here's what I got: Now, I'm not a huge fan of Ron Paul. I'm an even smaller fan of people who set up forums that are supposedly open, then delete specific points of view. The fact that they were so obvious just indicates that they are comple...

2007-03-08 19:44:00 Author: Eric Subject: 9th Circuit Endorses Censoring Christians Posted: Thu Mar 08, 2007 1:44 pm (GMT -5) 9th Circuit Endorses Censoring Christians Ruling says 'family values' is hate speech that scares city workers A ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has concluded that municipal employers have the right to censor the words "natural family," "marriage" and "family values" because that is hate speech and could scare workers. The ruling came in a case being handled by the Pro-Family Law Center, which promised an appeal of the drastic result. "We are going to take this case right up the steps of the United States Supreme Court," said Richard D. Ackerman, who along with Scott Lively argued the case for the Pro-Family Law Center. "We are simply unwilling to accept that Christians can be completely silenced on the issues of the day – especially on issues such as same-sex marriage, parental rights, and free s... |
