U.S. Census Bureau Motorcycles
2008-05-21 15:00:00
Few things are said to be as exhilarating as riding a motorcycle with its sense of unencumbered freedom and the feeling that the vehicle is an extension of the rider. With the summer season starting, more and more bikers will take to the road. There are about 150,000 accidents involving motorcycles each year. While this number is down almost three- quarters since 1980, these accidents still result in 4,600 deaths of motorcycle riders annually. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov LATER Technorati Tags: RilySi,Ride it like you stole it,Motorcycle Riding,Motorcycle Commuting,FlatLand,Florida

Interracial marriages forming at unprecedented rates: census
2008-04-09 04:10:00
TORONTO — Four decades after Hollywood's first interracial kiss in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" shocked mainstream America, Canada's multicultural society is increasingly showing signs that love is colour blind. The latest census figures released Wednesday by Statistics Canada show that, on this side of the border, mixed unions are forming at unprecedented rates. There were 289,420 mixed-race couples, married and common law, in 2006 - one third more than in 2001, the last time the data was collected.Yet there was a time in North America's not-so distant past that marrying someone of a different race wasn't just taboo, it could land someone behind bars. Before a 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision ruled it unconstitutional, 16 states still had laws banning interracial marriage.Since Sidney Poitier's landmark smooch, Hollywood continued the tradition of big-screen portrayals of interracial romances. Kevin Costner hooked up with Whitney Houston in "The Bodyguard" and Spike Lee brou...

Pencil-Pushing Census Bureau Dumps Portable Tech for Pencils [Paper Trail]
2008-04-06 17:30:00
To our friends at Treehugger, please look away as we report that the Census Bureau is ditching plans to go digital and will return to its sinful pencil-pushing, paper-crazy roots. Originally, the Bureau planned for workers to use 500,000 wireless handheld devices from Harris Corp. as a replacement for the paperwork used to collect information from Americans who do not respond to the census. The $1.3 billion program looked great on, well, paper, but was ultimately derailed by hardware issues and incompetence. The biggest issue with the Harris handhelds was that they were more paperweight than PDA. They were too big (slightly larger than a cell phone), didn't transmit data very well, and at one point during testing there were 417 outstanding technical requirements not being met. "Reverting back to paper, which we've done in the past and know we can do, lessens the risk," says Stephen Buckner, a Census Bureau spokesman. The silver lining to this story? The Bureau will still take del...

New Zealand and Italian marine scientists began a two-month voyage to Antarctica's northern coast Tuesday as part of the first-ever census of Antarctic marine biodiversity, Prime Minister Helen Clark said. The census of Antarctic marine life is a multinational research project "involving 23 countries and 11 coordinated voyages to survey marine ecosystems and habitats in waters surrounding Antarctica," she said. The 26 scientists on the research ship will collect samples of sea life and capture images of the sea floor down to depths of 13,000 feet in previously unexplored areas, Clark said in a statement. The data collected by surveys of areas not previously explored will "assist decision-making on environmental issues such as climate change and its effect on Southern Ocean ecosystems," she said.Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the voyage would provide essential information about the biodiversity and functioning of the Ross Sea ecosystem off the north Antarctic coast that would he...

The Charleston Daily Mail mines the latest Census Bureau estimates to report that "West Virginia has gained population for the sixth consecutive year."But with a growth rate of 0.2%, the 2006-2007 increase (of 3,336 residents) "puts it among the nation's slow-growth states," the newspaper found. " Nevada is the fastest growing, with an estimated population increase of 2.9 percent this year," the article said, while " Michigan and Rhode Island lost population this year."The article also compares the Mountain State's estimate with its neighbors, and offers a graphic as well.

More than half the Americans who might have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversaries since 2000 were either divorced, separated or widowed, according to a census survey released today. For the first time at least since World War II, married people had a less than even chance of still being married 25 years later. The latest survey by the Census Bureau confirmed that most Americans eventually marry, but they are marrying later and are less likely to be wed only once. Those trends continued, although the proportion who have ever been divorced, about one in five, remained constant. “Basically, it looks like we’re pretty much holding steady,” said Rose Kreieder, a Census Bureau demographer. “There are not radical differences.” Among people ...

Author: Eric Subject: When did the Luke 2 Census Occur?Posted: Thu Sep 06, 2007 11:46 pm (GMT -4) When did the Luke 2 Census Occur? Daryl E. Witmer Alleged Biblical Problem How can the Bible be correct (Luke 2:2) when claiming that the great census decreed by Rome's Caesar Augustus about the time of Jesus' birth circa 4-5 B.C. occurred "when Quirinius was governor" if Quirinius (or Cyrenius) didn't even become governor until the year 6 A.D.?! Isn't this a clear case of the Bible being in error on matters of history? Sensible Solution No so fast. Critics used this text for many years to make their case for a Bible that is unreliable. But no more. Today, there are a number of reasons for giving Luke the benefit of the doubt. Over and over (in references to 32 countries, 54 cities, and 9 islands) the doctor has proven himself to be a reliable historian, as demonstrated by famed scholar and archaeologist, Sir William Ramsey. A Census Calamity
2007-08-29 22:19:00
Between the war, Katrina, and the prospect of Mikey Fitzpatrick returning to the spotlight once more, I know I?m just full of bad news today (sorry, but I?m not done yet). The New York Times had twin doses of disillusionment concerning the latest census report, including the following excerpt from this editorial?Sputtering under the weight of the credit crisis and the associated drop in the housing market, the economic expansion that started in 2001 looks like it might enter history books with the dubious distinction of being the only sustained expansion on record in which the incomes of typical American households never reached the peak of the previous cycle. It seems that ordinary working families are going to have to wait ? at the very minimum ? until the next cycle to make up the losses they suffered in this one. There?s no guarantee they will. The gains against poverty last year were remarkably narrow. The poverty rate declined among the elderly, but it remained unchanged for peo...

Census Bureau Asks That Immigration Raids Halt for 2010 Count
2007-08-19 00:22:00
I heard about this on the radio yesterday and was dumbfounded. I could not believe one department of the federal government was asking another department to purposely not enforce the law. But as Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies says: "If you don't enforce your laws, this is what you are going to get, one agency asking another agency to subvert the law".Absolutely astonishing. How broken must our immigration system be to allow this sort of thing to happen? Can you imagine the IRS saying donÂ’t collect taxes so they can figure out what people really owe. Or how about the FBI saying they arenÂ’t going to track down rapists and murderers so they can find out how many there really are. I know that sounds ridiculous but isnÂ’t that exactly what the census bureau is asking? The Bush administration has been worse than lax in enforcing the law they are actively discouraging our own Border Patrol agents from doing their sworn duty. If you doubt that ask ex Borde...
US: Census Won't Deter Immigration Raids
2007-08-18 17:55:00
Immigration officials sharpened their message a day after being coy about whether they would agree to halt enforcement raids during the 2010 census. "We won't entertain any request to scale back our efforts," Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Kelly Nantel said Friday. Census officials had planned to speak with immigration agents about curbing enforcement during the population count, the Census Bureau's second-ranking official said in an interview earlier this week. Raids during the population count would make an already distrustful group even less likely to cooperate with government workers who are supposed to include them in the headcount, Deputy Director Preston Jay Waite had said. When asked Thursday if the immigration enforcement agency would consider suspending raids during the census, spokeswoman Pat Reilly said, "If we were, we wouldn't talk about it." "We're an investigative agency," she added. "We don't talk about how we target our enforcement activitie...

2007-08-17 17:23:00
WASHINGTON ? Census workers know it will be difficult counting illegal immigrants for the 2010 population tally and even tougher if those immigrants are hiding from enforcement agents. “If you have federal officials going door to door trying to count people, and federal officials going door to door trying to deport people, it doesn’t work,” said ...

U.S. Census Bureau income data, deficient?
2007-06-27 23:04:00
In some aspects, definitely. For example, the U.S. Census Bureau does not provide a table detailing the distribution of per capita household income - that is the distribution of households depending on the amount of gross income they are able to allocate to each member. Per capita household income is, however, more meaningful than gross total household income. For example, a household of two making $75,000 will likely have a higher standard of living than a family of four living on $105,000. The former has a higher per capita household income (37,500) than the ladder ($26,250) and, therefore, is able to spend more on each person, leading to a higher standard of living. This is precisely why the U.S. government uses per capita household income to assess eligibility for well-fare and student aid. Yet, not one table exhibiting the distribution of household by household income per household member is available on the Income Statistics forum. Only a mention of the median income per house...
