Centenary room
2008-08-06 04:09:00 What are you doing on Saturday? Well not you, but that's what Jo, one of my friends from tennis, asked me last week. Luckily I didn't have anything major planned for the day because she had scored tickets to the match day entertainment in the Centenary room at Bellerieve oval for the Devils football game against Williamstown. The Devils haven't been traveling too well this season so I wasn't expecting a great game of football, but I was looking forward to a collar and tie function with good food, good drink and good company along with hearing from the guest speaker Australian cricketer Damien Flemming. The food was OK, but nothing to write home about. The beer was free flowing and available in copious amounts. The company was great, Jo works with a very funny bunch of people and their partners were great fun as well. Damien Flemming was very funny. He is a great speaker and has a lot of funny stories to tell. As expected the football was crap with the Devi...

The Likely Centenary: His Lordship's Greatest Hits
2007-11-06 02:21:00 November 5th, 1856.Remember, remember the fifth of November. Not because of that awful terrorist bastard Guy Fawkes, and his preposterous plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. No, dear readers, the real reason to remember this historic day is that it is the very day that I, Lord Likely, celebrate my one-hundredth journal entry! Hurrah, and indeed, huzzah!Who would have imagined that when I set out to transcribe my thrilling adventures in my trusted journals all those months ago, that I would still be writing them one-hundred entries later?Well, I would have imagined it, of course, as I am cocking-well brilliant.Naturally, to celebrate such a milestone I set about cracking open a fresh bottle of champagne - quite literally, infact, as Botter did a terrible job of opening the bottle himself, leaving me with little recourse but to smash the bottle open upon his wretched skull. Of course, he then whined and moaned and carried on about needing 'several stitches' to his head, but I...

Centenary Diamond: the world's largest colorless, flawless diamond
2007-09-01 23:47:00 The Centenary Diamond was discovered in the Premier Mine on July 17, 1986 using their X-ray imaging system. It is the world's third-largest, modern-cut perfect diamond that possesses 599 carats in rough form. The Gemological Institute of America has certified Centenary Diamond with a color grade as D color. This is supposed to be the highest grade of colorless diamond. The original rough was presented on May 11, 1988 in the Centennial Celebration of the De Beers Consolidated Mines. As then-chairman Julian Oglivie Thompson said, "We have recovered at the Premier Mine a diamond of 599 carats (119.8 g) which is perfect in color ? indeed it is one of the largest top-color diamonds ever found. Naturally it will be called the Centenary Diamond."The Centenary is characterized with 75 faces on the pinnacle, 89 on the base and 83 on the girdle that forms a total of 247 facets. In recent times, the diamond has been placed as an element of the British Crown Jewels. The complete version of the C...

This Is My Now (Centenary Post)
2007-06-22 17:58:00 Once, upon a time, about 9 months ago.. I began my blogging journey with a simple welcome post. I must admit, developing a blogging voice was difficult. Ideas were hard to come by. Thus, it is a bit hard for me to realize that I am actually writing my centenary post!Initially, I wanted to check out what blogging was. It was more or less an experiment that turned out to be hobby! Of course, I had several other reasons for starting a blog. It has been a great experience for me so far. New Bentley Brooklands coupe celebrates circuit?s centenary
2007-06-16 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge This week, as the Brooklands track celebrates its centenary, the most famous of the vintage Bentley racing cars are reunited at the circuit for the first time in the company of the very latest Bentley Brooklands coupe. Bentley?s proud sporting pedigree, forged by the exploits of the immortal Bentley Boys on this famous racetrack in the 1920s and 30s, was the inspiration for the new Bentley Brooklands coupe, capturing all the style, power and splendour of that era. During this period, Brooklands was the scene of some of Bentley?s greatest triumphs, as the Bentley Boys raced their machines on the treacherous Members? Banking. Two of the most successful Bentley racers at Brooklands were Speed Six models with special Vanden Plas bodies, known affectionately as ?Old Number Two? and ?Old Number Three?. These were the only cars created by Bentley specifically for competition purposes. ?Old Number Two? was victorious in its first outing, winning the 193...

2008: A Centenary of a Eucharistic Procession
2007-06-07 22:14:00 International Eucharistic Congress: London 1908 Next year marks the centenary of a Eucharistic procession which was banned and which led to the resignations of two Cabinet ministers in the United Kngdom. The occasion was the International Eucharistic Congress which was held in London from 9th to 13th September 1908 at the invitation of the Archbishop of Westminster, Archbishop Bourne. It was the first Engllish speaking International Congress of the Eucharist in an English speaking country. More importantly, it was the first time that a legate of the Pope (Cardinal Vincent Vannutelli) had been in England since the Reformation. At that time, London was the centre of a huge Empire and the holding of such an event in such a location was obviously important. At the time it was regarded as the greatest religious triumph of its generation. More than three hundred and fifty years had elapsed since a legate from the pope had been seen in England. With him were six other cardinals, fourteen arch...

Good acting: an award and a centenary
2007-05-22 17:44:00 A few months ago we reported that the Cincinnati Arts Association - with their stage adaptation of Jane Eyre - had won the Acclaim Award in the category of Best Touring Production. The Enquirer has an article today about the ceremony and all the winners. Congratulations! Many websites today have articles concerning Laurence Olivier's centenary. We would like to focus our attention on the one from The Guardian. Several renowned actors share their anecdotes of Mr Olivier, Helen Hayes among them.Helen Hayes: Way back in the mid-30s and early 40s, my husband Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht wrote a screenplay for Wuthering Heights. I was staying in California at the time. One day, Charles came back from a tennis game very excited. "I have just seen the perfect Heathcliff, a brooding young man who leans against the wall of a tennis court at the club, waiting for someone to come along who wants a game. He has a startling, dangerous, dark beauty. Come down and see him, Helen, and tell me I ...

2007-01-04 12:48:02 Okay, I won't lie: there's only one place you can truly want to stay when you visit the Isle of Man for the centenary this year. And that's the TT Village! I know, you're loving it already and you haven't even clicked the link yet. Oh no, I'm not trying to sell it to you. Absolutely not. I hate the thought of posting purely for the purpose of selling something to you! That's tantamount to treason! Oh, but this is all blather and bluster! What you need to do is click that link. Or perhaps this one! Or even this one! Whatever. Just check it out.Seriously though, if you're coming over to see the monumentous 100th TT motorbike race in the Isle of Man, this is the place to stay. No joke. Book early to avoid disappointment.
