2010-10-16 23:11:00 Two-time HSBC Champions winner Phil Mickelson has helped to unveil the new trophy for the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions: 'The Old Tom Morris Cup', reports Tim Maitland. Photo:Getty Images The new cup and name are in keeping with the other three World Golf Championships events, which also boast similarly-designed Wedgwood trophies named after golfing legends. The World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship awards The Walter Hagen Cup to the winner, the World Golf Championships-CA Championship offers The Gene Sarazen Cup, and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational winner holds aloft The Gary Player Cup. “I am really fond of the original trophy, which can happen when you win something more than once,” says Mickelson, who lifted the 2007 HSBC Champions and then became the first winner of the tournament following its elevation to World Golf Championships status in 2009. “But the new trophy has...

International Tree Climbing Championships come to Chicagoland!
2010-07-22 22:25:00 On tonight's WGN News, I'll be getting a preview of the International Tree Climbing Championships. And no - they don't climb like you did when you were a kid. These are professional arborists. When trees are dying, in need of pruning, or require some maintenance after a storm - they climb all the way up and finish the job. It can be dangerous work, which is why most of the competition is based on safety techniques and efficiency.PHOTO GALLERY: Tree climbers prep the scene for the big 2010 International Tree Climbing Competition at the Morton Arboretum......
Bad pitching loses championships - Minnesota Twins & Detroit Tigers are
2010-07-14 08:40:00 It usually only takes one witnessing of the Chicago White Sox trotting up Juan Pierre and Omar Vizquel as their 1 and 2 hitters to realize that they probably don't have the best offense in the AL Central. The Twins and Tigers have perpetual MVP candidates on their lineups in Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Miguel Cabrera, whereas the best hitter on the White Sox might not get re-signed after this season. But little more than a cursory look at the Detroit and Minnesota rosters reveals that both are sorely deficient from a starting pitcher standpoint. While the swan-diving Twins at least have two studs in Carl Pavano (serial killer mustache and all) and Francisco Liriano, the Detroit Tigers have Justin Verlander accompanied by a group of starters who have been bad enough to give the rotation a losing record, even though the Tigers are 10 games over .500. Now that's impressive...-ly bad.
2010 World Quizzing Championships
2010-06-03 15:51:00 On Saturday, over 1000 contestants in 28 countries will be participating in the 8th annual World Quizzing Championships. Several American cities will have outposts of the competition, including Chicago, where trivia mavens will be gathering at noon at the Sulzer Regional Library, 4455 N. Lincoln Avenue. Lest you think this is merely a glorified bar trivia night, keep in mind the scope: there'll be 240 questions in eight categories, and you'll have two hours to answer them. Here are some sample questions from years past: What did Ramon Mercador use to kill Lev Bronstein? Which action performed with the cape in bullfighting takes its name from an incident which occurred as Jesus of Nazareth was led to his crucifixion in...

Champ Serena Williams Heads To China Open, Sony Ericsson Championships
2009-09-23 14:44:00 By Kelly Jad'on Within this last week we’ve seen a side of Serena Williams that’s been long forgotten emerge from the dark side of international competition. Though hotly criticized, it pales in comparison to Mike Tyson’s ear-biting episode against Evander Holyfield or the attack on Nancy Kerrigan by Tonya Harding’s ex-husband’s friends. Williams, a tough competitor on the line, apologized and will return another day to battle it out on the court. Serena has fought against difficult days in her past as well. Usually she bites her tongue, staves off anger and calls upon her inner strength and faith to see her way through a game. The youngest of five daughters, Serena found her way onto the tennis court, propelled by her father, encouraged by her mother, and trailing her older sisters. The entire family coalesced on the courts, practicing daily. Venus and Serena really excelled, and were finally allowed to participate ...

Sauna World Championships
2009-08-09 19:53:00 It's the event where competitors work up more of a sweat than anyone at the Olympic Games, just by sitting still. The 10th annual Sauna World Championship took place in Heinola, Finland, over the weekend, with 160 men and women from 23 countries trying to tough it out in the heat for as long as possible.Given that their country gave the sauna to the world, it wasn't too much of a surprise to see the Finns dominating.Competitors concentrate as they bear the intense heat during the men's semi-finals of the World Sauna Championships.Finnish Timo Kaukonen won the men's event by staying in the sauna for three minutes, 46 seconds. And Tatyana Arkhipenko from Russian took the women's title with a time of three minutes, nine seconds. If those times sound unspectacular, bear in mind that the saunas were heated to 110c, and half a litre of water was poured on the sizzling stones every 30 seconds, making it far more gruelling than the average relaxing sauna, which is 70-80c.'It wasn't fun ...

World Toe-Wrestling Championships
2009-08-09 18:01:00 Competitors literally went at it toe to toe last weekend at the annual World Toe-Wrestling Championships in Ashbourne, England.Competitors literally went at it toe to toe last weekend at the annual World Toe-Wrestling Championships in Ashbourne, England. The competition is now in its 14th year and the rules are pretty self-explanatory.After being checked for foot hygiene, two bare-footed competitors cross toes before trying to force each other off the "toedium".Although more international competitors have been making the pilgrimage recently, including some from Australia and the US, this year's main event was between two locals - defending champion Paul "The Toeminator"' Beech and veteran Alan "Nasty" Nash. The contest was so tight, in fact, that it had to go to a judges' decision. He concluded that Nash had the more "toe-tal" package, and he would walk away with this year's trophy, and his fifth World Championship.

This could be the asterisk world championships
2009-07-25 15:34:00 By PAUL NEWBERRYROME--If every record is broken at the world championships by swimmers wearing suits that will soon be illegal, what should we make of all those astonishing numbers?Should they be accompanied by an asterisk, as one prominent coach suggested? Or should they just be viewed as the products of a different era, a target that will seem out of reach at first but surely will fall someday. No matter what, these are a world championships like no other."A lot of us are joking that this might be the fastest we ever go," American backstroker Aaron Peirsol said. "We might as well enjoy this year."Swimming's governing body, FINA, finally stepped up Friday to pass a rule banning the sort of high-tech...

Cyclist With Two Testicles Says He Can Win 14 Tour de France Championships
2009-06-02 17:22:00 (Tampa, FL) Professional cyclist Greg Dorvman, 23, is about to compete in his first Tour de France, and he has a message for Lance Armstrong. “Stay home…Retire, again…Do not ride in this year’s Tour de France. Your one testicle will be no match against my two testicles.”Starting this year Dorvman plans to win 14 consecutive Tour de France championships, because in his mind if Armstrong can win 7 with one testicle, then he should win 14 with two testicles.

Bet365 Euro Championships promotion
2008-06-17 02:22:00 Bet365 Euro Championships promotion I must admit that I have been enjoying the Euro 2008 football tournament even though England have not qualified. But luckily I always have my default team of Holland to rely on and they have been absolutely brilliant in every way. Tonight I watched Germany qualify for the quarter final even though they played a very mediocre game. However, I have seen quite a few exciting and fast flowing matches and last night?s late minute win by Turkey was a cracker. There was so much passion and spirit that it made for a wonderful end to a fascinating game. And now you can make the championship even more exciting and enjoyable with Bet365 and their fabulous Champions of Europe casino promotion. So, if you think this tournament is great already you can heighten your enjoyment of the tournament with this great promotion that runs in the casino with each game that is played. The promotion runs from the start of the tournament on June 7th to the end of the tourname...
Dorset Championships results
2008-06-08 11:36:00 We made it to Dorset after a VERY late submission of our entry forms. It's quite a drive from where we live, and my wife decided to use that excuse to take the whole family down to stay in a hotel which meant we were better rested before arriving for weigh in on the Sunday. The competition was as big as I'd expected - there were something like 300 competitors there and the place was packed out. The competition was confined to a single large hall, but the sports centre had people wandering around in Doboks & sparring gear just about everywhere you turned.James didn't fare very well at this one unfortunately - he seemed to be phased by the size of his opponent who was a fair bit bigger than him. He also seems to have a bad habit of looking at the scoreboard, or at me throughout the round. Had some harsh words with him about that! He lost by a single point, and I'm sure we can get a better performance next time from him.I fared slightly better winning my first bout with a techn...

2008 World Hockey Championships: Medal round.
2008-05-17 18:05:00 The 2008 World Hockey Championships will be completed this weekend as the final two matches of the tournament will be played at the Colisée Pepsi in Quebec city. The two hockey super powers, Canada and Russia, will play the gold medal match on Sunday. Both teams have gone thru the whole tournament without suffering a single loss. Russia needed to go thru a shootout session twice during the tournament; once against Belarus and once as they faced the Czech Republic. But both times, the Russian team claimed the victory. Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and veteran Sergei Fedorov lead Russia's offense with 10 points each.On the Canadian side, the team went perfect all tournament long. All the games were won during regulation time even if a couple of games were very disputed. Yesterday's 5-4 victory against the Swedes in the semifinal match was everything except an easy one. Also, a surprising 2-1 result over Norway during the group phase helped raise some doubt about the team's cap...

Pac-10 Rowing Championships May 18th
2008-05-16 21:13:00 The Pac-10 final for men's and women's rowing is this weekend (Sunday) on Lake Natoma near Sacramento, CA. My daughter Carly's WSU Cougars are seeded 2nd after Cal and are currently ranked 4th in the nation. Winning won't be easy, but could set up a national championship run. Wow. I never dreamed I be the parent of an NCAA Division 1 athlete, let alone a potential national champion. If you want to see the races you can get the schedule at the WSU Cougars link above and get live streaming at Pac-10.org, but you have to register. I don't know if there's any other way, sorry. Good luck Carly and Go Cougs (that hurts to say as a Washington Husky). On another personal note, my 8 year old, Ryan, qualified for the 2nd round of the local Pitch, Hit & Run competition and will be testing his pitching skills at Garfield High School on Saturday the 24th. Isn't succeeding vicariously through one's children great?
