Should You Monetize Engagement?
2012-05-25 14:12:00
Sometimes the headline says it all.   I saw a headline in my feed in my reader that said:  “Monetizing Employee Engagement.”   Nothing wrong with that on the surface but as a I was watching the slide show about how engaged employees drive profits, drive innovation, drive almost anything you can put in a ...

Obama?s continues to support Washington?s sclerotic status quo
2012-05-22 21:27:00
On Saturday, Michael Barone linked a Weekly Standard piece by Yuval Levin which he described as a “must read”, adding that “the Romney campaign should definitely read the whole thing, and act on it.” Having read the lengthy essay, I agree. Yuval offers a sound means for Romney to approach the issues facing the country ...

Obama?s gay marriage decision: 60% say it won?t change their vote
2012-05-11 23:20:00
Six in ten Americans say President Barack Obama's historic shift to embrace same-sex marriage won't affect how they vote in November, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll. Still, more independents said the move made them "less likely" to vote for him than "more likely," Gallup said, making the decision a "net minus" for the ...
WWE Making Major Change To NXT Tapings Beginning Next Week
2012-05-11 21:42:00
WWE NXT will be graduating to its own tapings, combined with WWE developmental Florida Championship Wrestling starting on Thursday 5/17 at 7 PM. The tapings will be held at Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL (near Orlando) at the Full Sail Live gym. Tickets for the tapings will be free to FSU staff and students with ID as long as they reserve the tickets in advance. No word yet as to how the general public can attend. I am told one of the reasons the tapings, which will be branded as "WWE Superstar Showdown", are being moved are to make it easier to integrate WWE developmental talent into the mix for NXT. The hope is that the University feel will give the show a chance for better crowd reactions as well as help upgrade FCW TV to a "grander" look than the FCW Arena in Tampa can provide. The plan is to upgrade NXT and give it more attention as opposed to it being a secondary show on the Smackdown tapings. HHH is behind the moves and will be very involved with the tapings. He wa...

How Time Can Affect Your Ability To Change Behaviors
2012-05-11 15:14:00
I’ve posted before about something called temporal discounting ? the effect time has on our perception of value.  The further out in time a reward is the less value we think it has.  We value rewards we earn sooner more than awards we can earn later. To me it is one of the big reasons ...
An Underground Fossil Forest Offers Clues on Climate Change.
2012-05-11 03:01:00
They've discovered a veritable time capsule! In the clammy depths of a southern Illinois coal mine lies the largest fossil forest ever discovered, at least 50 times as extensive as the previous contender. Scientists are exploring dripping passages by the light of headlamps, mapping out an ecosystem from 307 million years ago, just before the world's first great forests were wiped out by global warming. This vast prehistoric landscape may shed new light on climate change today. "Effectively you've got a lost world," said Howard Falcon-Lang, a paleontologist at Royal Holloway, University of London, who has explored the site. "It's the closest thing you'll find to time travel," he added. Simply amazing....
65% of Americans want action on Climate Change.
2012-05-11 03:01:00
Sustainable Business is reporting that a large majority of Americans want to take action to combat Climate Change: 62% of Americans now believe that man-made climate change is occurring, according to the biannual National Survey of American Public Opinion on Climate Change, commissioned by the Brookings Institute. That's up from the low of 50% in spring 2010, but it's still far down from the 75% who believed it in 2008. A majority of Americans (65%) also want mandatory controls on greenhouse gas emissions, but there's still a partisan divide. 82% of Democrats favor it, but only 50% of Republicans do, according to the latest Gallup poll. The conclusion: The GOP is not representing the public in its outright denial of climate change and related action. GOP lawmakers oppose carbon emissions controls much more than their constituents. Indeed, the GOP (aka Republican) representatives are not properly representing the 50% of their constituents who want to take action to combat ...
Will Obama?s gay marriage pander hurt him politically?
2012-05-10 21:25:00
Interesting how today, both gay conservatives and leftists see through President Obama’s pander yesterday on gay marriage, coming as it did following a week when the Democrats was facing questions for his stand on gay marriage. The president may claim that Vice President Biden’s recent comments on gay marriage forced the timing of the announcement, ...
Ex-Rep. Tom Davis: GOP stance on gay marriage may have to change
2012-05-10 18:41:00
One day after President Barack Obama announced his support for gay marriage, former Virginia Republican Rep. Tom Davis said that while the GOP's opposition to gay marriage may not hurt them now, it's "not a comfortable place" for the party in the long run.

How will Obama's change of heart affect his re-election campaign?
2012-05-09 20:58:00
President Barack Obama's history-making embrace of gay marriage could send far-reaching political aftershocks through a presidential campaign defined by voter concerns about the economy but likely decided by slivers of the electorate in a handful of battleground states. "The politics, it's not clear how they cut in some places that are going to be pretty ...

Manmade climate change theory continues to be battered by reality
2012-05-08 17:25:00
Commentary by James H. Shott   Two of the major concerns of environmentalists are manmade climate change, and in response to this theory, the absolute necessity of green energy sources to replace the relatively inexpensive conventional energy we now get from coal, oil and natural gas.   Although our air is cleaner today than at any time in the last hundred years or so, it?s not clean enough for the environmental zealots inside and outside of government agencies. Hardly anyone would argue that if the activities of humans seriously damage the Earth?s atmosphere and raise its average temperature, it just makes sense to move away from fossil fuel energy toward non-polluting green energy. All they need is a plausible scenario that human activity is indeed warming the planet to dangerous levels, and people will accept moving to green energy.   However, as time passes more and more evidence comes forth weakening the case for manmade climate change; the data no lon...

How To Change The Login Logo in Xubuntu
2012-05-01 09:00:00
This one took a while to find, but I finally found it. Although I really like Ubuntu and Xubuntu, those bastards are getting trickier at hiding their logos and artwork to keep people from changing them. Not sure if it's on purpose or not, but that seems to be the case. In fact I decided to switch to Xubuntu for the base of bauer-Puntu 12.04 because vanilla Ubuntu is becaoming a logo whore! Anyway, Xubuntu is way easier to customize I am finding, but there is one logo that I had a problem getting rid of. That is, unti now. That is the little Xubuntu logo one will find at the Lightdm screen. Here is a screen shot of Bauer-Puntu 12.04's login screen where I've replaced the Xubuntu mouse logo with an Anonymous logo:I tried looking for the image in all the usual places, /usr/share/pixmaps, /usr/share/unity-greeter etc, but none of the images I replaced were the ones being used. After some digging I finally figured out where that bastard was hiding! If you want to replace that log...

Ever wish you could escape your troubles by changing your name and moving away? Dyn Culture: When Change Comes, Will You Be Ready?
2012-04-30 16:25:00
“Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” – John Maxwell This quote brings me back to a conversation I had as we were setting up for a DynTini in Las Vegas a few years ago. I was amazed by the growth and change we had at Dyn up to that point so I asked two of our VPs, “Is it normal for things to change so often?” “Chris, it’s fine. In fact, it’s good. If you’re not growing, you’re dying.” I had no problem with the changes I was seeing, especially considering the opportunities they had provided me. I found it to be thrilling and it satiated my appetite for new experiences and things to try. However, I had some people around me warning me of impending doom. To them, change was a bad thing. How can two people view the same change in a completely different manner? Only some people realize the opportunity for growth that change provides. In fact, the harder the change, the more opportunity for growth. When it comes to ch...

Obama: better to be cool than accomplished?
2012-04-27 06:18:00
Yesterday, Ann Althouse, reminding us that his predecessor gave up golf when he was chief executive, wondered as the president’s latest effort to appear cool: Does a slow jam with Jimmy Fallon send the wrong message? Or do we not think about the mom whose son may have recently died anymore? (Obama has no Cindy Sheehan ...

Liberal pundit wonders what Obama has planned for 2nd Term
2012-04-19 08:37:00
As the president focuses on his campaign for reelection, he seems less focused on doing his job than he is on attacking his partisan adversaries.  He hasn’t put forward plans to address the nation’s pressing fiscal problems, the burgeoning federal debt and the coming insolvency of entitlements. And he hasn’t really specified what he plans ...

Do postpartisan healers call their partisan opponents Social Darwinists?

Whatever happened to hope and change? Yet Obama?s response hardly advances ...
Mr. President, You?re No Bill Clinton

Mr. President, I observed the presidency of Bill Clinton. I marveled at his ability to co-opt partisan adversaries’ ideas and spin them as his own. Bill Clinton was a political genius. Climate Change will sink the coastal U.S.
2012-04-05 08:14:00
It's just a matter of time: About 3.7 million Americans live within a few feet of high tide and risk being hit by more frequent coastal flooding in coming decades because of the sea level rise caused by global warming, according to new research. If the pace of the rise accelerates as much as expected, researchers found, coastal flooding at levels that were once exceedingly rare could become an every-few-years occurrence by the middle of this century. And which state is the most prone for massive disruption along the coast because of Global Warming? By far the most vulnerable state is Florida, the new analysis found, with roughly half of the nation's at-risk population living near the coast on the porous, low-lying limestone shelf that constitutes much of that state. But Louisiana, California, New York and New Jersey are also particularly vulnerable, researchers found, and virtually the entire American coastline is at some degree of risk. Climate Central has the skinny, along...
