Why Do We Love to Work at Companies Where We Don?t Have to Work?
2012-02-01 14:12:00 Employee engagement on the web and in business articles has almost reached parody status. I’m waiting for a Stephen Colbert character to emerge as the voice of engagement. Incentives May Not Trump Culture
2012-01-25 13:41:00 Why did your incentive program fail? Maybe because you focused the program on ?sacred values.? Company/corporate culture is a hot discussion these days. SOTU: Obama?s last chance to change tone
2012-01-24 19:18:00 Four years ago, Barack Obama ran for the presidency promising a new era of hope and change. He would bring us together with a new kind of politics that transcended partisan differences. Since starting working in the Oval Office, however, he has adopted a much different tone. When a Republican Senator challenged the Democratic ...

When ?Mobile? Recognition Makes Sense
2012-01-23 14:27:00 Last week I posted that ?mobilizing? employee reward and recognition programs was a red herring. My thought process was that recognizing employees isn?t a function of ?location? but a function of effort on the part of managers. Many in the incentive industry are launching ?mobile? apps for their incentive and reward platforms selling it from ...

Football Pitch-Sized Batteries Could Change the World of Renewable Energy
2012-01-10 15:55:00 2011 saw huge advances in solar, wind and other renewable energy sources, and these advancements will continue into 2012. In fact 2012 could be the year that renewable energy sources start to seriously compete with traditional fossil fuels, at least that is the hope in the battle to reduce carbon emissions and our dependence on dwindling oil stocks. However a major problem with renewable energy sources is that they can rarely provide consistent power levels, due to a myriad of factors outside of human control. Eric Wesoff, an industry analyst with Greentech Media, explains that, "A wind farm only works when the blades are spinning. It might have a nameplate capacity of 100 megawatts, but it never puts out that . . . → Read More: Football Pitch-Sized Batteries Could Change the World of Renewable Energy

Change is hard
2012-01-08 13:45:00 Organizational change is hard – like the way a diamond is hard. So, don’t try to change the organization. It’s too big anyway. Instead, focus on changing one person at a time – that’s hard enough. Don’t necessarily take the “one person as a time” too literally, though. You don’t need to completely and utterly have one person won ...

NFL Playoffs - Time to Change the Rules: Overtime's Playoff Modification
2012-01-06 23:04:00 The NFL released a reminder this week about the modified post season rules. The league changed the rules before the start of last season, trying to prevent a first possession field goal from ending a playoff game. However, the rule was not needed last year. This year, it could be. Essentially, the rule prevents a team from winning the game on the first possession, unless they score a touchdown. A touchdown will always end overtime. However, if a team kicks a field goal on that first possession, they then have to kick off and allow the opponent an opportunity to possess the ball. At this point, the team to get the ball second will either lose by not scoring, tie the game and continue playing, or win the game with a touchdown. If both teams have had a chance to possess the ball on offense, the game will end on the first score. And, just to throw this one in there, any defensive score (interception return, fumble return, safety) ends the game as well. Does that all make sense? ...

How To Change Your China Employer AND Keep Your Work Permit
2011-12-29 16:48:00 My law firm does not generally handle visa/work permit matters in China as it typically is not worthwhile to pay lawyer rates for this. The other day, I got an email from a loyal reader I know, asking me how she could go to work for a new China employer, without having to relinquish her existing work permit. I told her that I did not know how to do that and asked her to report back to me if and when she found out. This morning I got an email from her, very nicely setting out the steps one must go through to switch China employers while hanging on to a China work permit. Neither I nor anyone in my firm has confirmed that these are the right steps, but they certainly sound right to me. Here goes. The most important factor in keeping your work permit is getting a letter of release from your current/old employer company. Technically, as long as the employee has not violated its contract, the employer company is required to provide this release letter. However, as you can imagine, peopl...

Culture-Con Preview: 8 Ideas For Enhancing Culture Via Positive Change
2011-12-16 15:58:00 In the nearly five years I’ve been at Dyn, I’ve seen a lot of change. We’ve gone from offering DNS and email services to home consumers and small businesses to supporting some of the biggest names on the web in our evolution into a true Internet IaaS leader. When you’re employee #16, you and everyone else wear a lot of hats. But as you grow, you start bringing in more specialists and you have to learn to give some of those hats away. If you’re not careful, you can isolate employees and leave them feeling undervalued. With the first Culture-Con coming up in January, I wanted to pass the microphone to Bob Faw from the Matchbox Group, Chief Ignition Officer and one of the co-organizers of the event, for some thoughts on how to move forward with change in a positive way. - Chris Widner, Director of Culture & Talent Development Bob Faw -- Matchbox Group Every change your company goes through is an opportunity to enhance the culture. Apple To Change iPad Name Or Face Heavy Fine In China
2011-12-08 07:59:00 Apple Inc, one of the most trigger happy companies around when it comes to lawsuits, may finally be getting a taste of its own medicine. While their tablet, the iPad, may be leading the market in terms of market share, apparently its name as ‘iPad’ cannot be used anymore in the most populated country in the world: China. Apparently, the name ‘iPad’ was already copyrighted in 2000 by Proview Technology (Shenzhen), a subsidiary of Hong Kong Proview International Holdings Limited. Apple had purchased the right to use the name in Taipei by paying them $35,000, but according to the lawsuit they did not have the right to use it in Mainland China. Says Huang Yiding of the Hejun Vanguard Group,”Apple’s actions are strange. They had not obtained the rights to use the ‘iPad’ trademark when they began to sell the iPad on the Chinese mainland in September last year. Their copyright infringement is very clear. The laws are still there and they sel...
