Mixing it up
2008-05-28 14:10:00 *Disclaimer: I received this bottle of wine as part of a blogger trial of Bottlenotes. The bottle was a 2006 Catello Banfi Le Rime Chardonnay-Pinot Grigio. I can't say I have ever seen such a mix before, but I was intrigued and couldn't wait to try it. In fact, delinquent blogger that I am, I tried this wine months ago and simply let the notes get lost among the now well over 500 posts on Wannabe Wino. The wine hails from Tuscany, clocked in at 12% alcohol by volume, and can be purchased from Bottlenotes for $10! I don't think the wine saw oak, though I did see some creamy tendencies in it...maybe it went through a little malo or it's just the influence of the Chardonnay? On the nose I found creamy vanilla, lemon, tropical fruit, and pineapple. The nose was very light, and it took some serious sniffing on my part to tease out some flavors. In the mouth the wine was crisp and light, it showed a little lemon, peach, pineapple, and tropical fruit. I sort of expected it to be oaky...

Melville 2006 Estate Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay
2008-05-10 22:28:00 Melville Vineyards and Winery puts out a good quality Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir year after year. The Melville 2006 Estate Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay is no exception. It has a light golden straw color with a hint of green in the glass. The nose displays light citrus, pear, and tropical fruit. The aromas are elegant and subtle in character. (I suspect my wine is a smidge to cold as well...)The palate is round and soft with creamy citrus, light green apple, tropical fruit, and a light note of caramel at the mid palate. Slightly round mouth feel from 10% malolactic fermentation, but remains soft, crisp and fresh. The acidity is sufficient, but I would have wished for just a tad more to accentuate the crisp and fresh side of the wine.Despite a relatively high alcohol level of 15.3% there is no trace of heat on the palate, which definitely is a big plus.Over all a nicely balanced, very good quality wine that is sure to please many palates. Especially if you like me prefer the not o...

Wine from Connecticut
2008-03-14 13:51:00 Despite having lived in Connecticut for the vast majority of my life, I had never had a chance to taste wine from the state before this Christmas. While spending a lengthy holiday visiting my family, Matt and I decided to hit up a vineyard in the town next to my parents' house to see what CT wine is all about. Now, I've heard of others reporting back on CT wine, even Dr. Debs on the west coast has had some! So it was high time I got my act together. We went early one morning to visit Chamard Vineyards in Clinton, Connecticut. Chamard is one of the oldest vineyards in CT, and benefits from the cooling effects of Long Island Sound in growing their grapes. They also source some of their fruit from Long Island. One of the bottles we brought home was a Chamard 2003 Chardonnay American Table Wine. It clocked in at 12.5% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure, and cost usOn the nose of the wine I found pineapple, toast, cedar, and lemon. The wine was oaked, but that was not the pr...

2006 PARDUCCI CHARDONNAY
2008-02-28 00:39:00 A good, affordable wine that goes well with anything, or all by itself. That is my quest and the 2006 Parducci Chardonnay from Mendocino Wine Company perfectly fits the bill. Lots of fruit aromas on the nose with lots of apple and vanilla flavors on the palate and an absolute perfect balance of oak. A hint of dryness with a very smooth finish made this a very enjoyable wine to partake of. In my quest to find out more about this wine, I had never even seen it before my purchase, I found the Mendocino Wine Company website and learned that they were the first carbon neutral winery in the United States. Now I'm not a so-called "tree hugger" by any stretch but do think we can do more to preserve the earth's bounty for future generations. It is nice to know that a company is doing their part and making great wine. I bought this one for $10.99 and gave it 4 Corkscrews as it was an overall enjoyable and tasty wine. Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Drink Wine!

Virginia Chardonnay
2008-02-23 17:45:00 The wine for the evening was a Linden Vineyards 2005 Avenius Chardonnay. It clocked in at 12.8% alcohol by volume and had a real cork closure. This was a gift from a guest at our PS tasting back in December. On the nose of the wine I found pear, oak, butter, and toast. Or perhaps buttered toast. In the mouth the flavors were entirely of pear and apple. The wine had a slightly oily mouthfeel, and the flavors were smooth.Overall I thought this was a well done VA white. It was not overpowered by the oak and butter that I found on the nose, but seemed to have just enough oak to give it a full body.I served the wine with spaghetti carbonara, a recipe I was trying for the first time. I'm not sure if it was the recipe, or if I did something wrong, but it was quite dry. I don't expect my carbonara to be creamy per se, but this was just dry. I got the recipe from my Silver Spoon cookbook. I don't think I'll try that one again, but I will keep looking for a good recipe, carbonara is...

Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards wine tasting
2008-02-02 22:36:00 Spending the weekend in Santa Barbara I decided to go to the Alma Rosa wine tasting at East Beach Wine Company last night. Stepping into the shop the place was packed and it took a minute before we reached the counter and could pay for two tastings and get our glasses. To our delight the owners, Thekla and Richard Sanford was there themselves, with their daughter Blakeney, to pour and talk to the customers. Nothing beats the opportunity to talk to either the owners or wine maker as you taste a winery's wine. Both Thekla and Richard where very nice and pleasant, and spent quite a bit of time with us. It was a true pleasure to talk to them, and you could tell how passionate and excited they are about their wines.A short bio: Richard Sanford was the first to plant Pinot Noir in Santa Rita Hills in 1970. 1981 him and Thekla started Sanford Winery, and after parting with it in 2005, they founded Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards at the location of their old winery. All grapes are grown org...

Not so sure
2008-01-02 13:22:00 Why we bought this bottle of wine. Dutcher Crossing was the first winery we stopped at on our honeymoon, so it might have been sheer excitement, or the notion that we had to buy at least a bottle or two from every winery we stopped at, or that we thought this was how Chardonnay was supposed to be. While we were big wine drinkers before we went to Sonoma for the first time, we honestly didn't drink a lot of California wines (how ironic given how many we drink now) and we mostly stuck unoaked white wines....So we bought this bottle of 2005 Dutcher Crossing Chardonnay from Castello Vineyard for$26. It clocked in at 14.3% alcohol and had a real cork closure. On the nose it was all oak and butter at first and that took a while to blow off to reveal any other aromas. After a bit of time, I found lemon, vanilla, green apple, and a touch of pear. However, it was heavily dominated by the butter and oak. In the mouth I got flavors of lemon, pear, and oak. The wine was buttery overall...

5 Tips For Choosing A Chardonnay
2007-11-02 16:05:00 Selecting a chardonnay is a fundamental challenge for any white wine drinker. We all know chardonnay, the undisputed champion of white wines. However, many of us would like to know a little bit more about the qualities and characteristics of chardonnay that would help us select this wonderful creation. This article will focus on 5 elements of chardonnay that will help in the selection and enjoyment process. The most fundamental characteristic of chardonnay is that it should be served COLD! Chardonnay served at room temperature, while palatable, is far too bold. The intense flavors at room temperature tend to overwhelm us and any food we might be consuming. As it decreases in temperature, the flavors are toned down, and the flavors are more easily differentiated. So, the colder the chardonnay, the better. It is important to determine the flavors you prefer in your chardonnay. Younger wines tend to be less complex than older varieties. It seems to take time for all the complexities of t...
