You Can Claim Donations to U.S. Charities in Certain Cases
2008-03-11 03:03:00
Normally if you want to claim a donation to charity and have that donation eligible for the charitable donation tax credit as an individual, the donation needs to be made to a registered Canadian charity or other qualified donee. However, there are a few exceptions in which you can receive tax advantages for donations made to U.S. charities. If you live and primarily work in Canada you can claim donations made to U.S. charities if that type of donation is recognized as a charitable donation in the United States and only to the extent that the donation represents no more than 75% of your U.S. income. So in other words, it would only be of use to you if you had income originating in the United States. If you live in Canada and work primarily in the United States (and most of your income is earned in the United States), than you will be able to claim charitable donations made to U.S. charities up to 75% of your total world income. So if you earned 60% of your income in the United States,...

Why the Boim Ruling is a Pyrrhic Victory for the Islamic Charities

The waning days of 2007 saw the Seventh Circuit reversing the $156 million judgment granted against various Muslims and Islamic organizations to the family of David Boim, who was killed by Hamas in Israel in 1996. Now that the holidays are over and I have had an opportunity to review the opinion, I am convinced that it is not the victory (or defeat) is has been made out to be. The Boims are rightly disappointed. I would be too, if something I worked hard towards - and which was quantified by such...(read more)

Charities Embrace Blogging
2007-12-03 18:10:00
There was a survey conducted among 76 largest US charities as whether they use blogging as means to raise funds and make their prospective contributors aware of what they are doing and why their support is necessary. Over one third of those charities have already embraced blogging and even more are expected to join soon. Three in four of them use at least one of the social networking tools available on the internet market today. It looks clear that the future of blogging is bright and shiny as more and more bloggers and readers choose to undergo this activity. On the other hand the competition among bloggers is raising too, so it is up to you how many of readers you are going to attract to your blog.

Charities update

As a quick update: The Desert Bus for Hope event has finally finished, after 4 days and raising over $22,000. Congrats to everyone who donated, and hopefully we'll see more events like it in the future.Child's Play is having their fundraiser in Seattle, on Dec. 11. If you can go (I wish I could, but it's smack in the middle of exams), you should check it out. They're auctioning off a pair of tickets on Ebay for a table at the dinner with Gabe and Tycho, as well as Wil Wheaton. You can also buy tickets directly. Dinner menu looks pretty sweet, and the auction looks pretty sick, plus almost 2/3 of it is tax deductible.

Greatest Charities Ever
2007-11-27 04:34:00
In the thanksgiving spirit of giving back, (yes, even as a law student), I've recently donated to two charities. Child's Play, which allows you to buy toys and video games that can be shipped directly to children's hospitals across the country, and is hosted by the good folks at Penny Arcade (Which you've probably seen me reading in Contracts); and a new one called Desert Bus for Hope. Desert Bus is a new charity, and it took me a little while to figure out what it was. Basically, there is a game that came out called Desert Bus. To play it, you have to drive a simulated bus in real time from Tuscon to Las Vegas, which takes approximately 8 hours at a maximum of 45mph. You can't pause it, and you can't automate it, because just like a real bus, it swerves randomly. If you crash, you get towed back to Tuscon, again in real time and start over. Once you reach Vegas, you have a few seconds to choose to turn around and head back, or it's game over.Sounds like torture right? Well, ...
