The cherry blossoms may be over, but the title race is just beginning

The sixth round of the J. League throws up two significant clashes, with the eleventh Tokyo derby competing for headlines along with the eternal classic between Urawa Reds and Kashima Antlers.Fallen giants Tokyo Verdy host their Ajinomoto Stadium co-tenants FC Tokyo on April 12, with Verdy having only just registered their first win in the league since winning promotion back to the top flight. They won away at Vissel Kobe in Round 5 thanks to 18-year-old Hiroki Kawano's volley, but it is the return of striker Hulk that could prove key to Verdy's chances of maintaining their top flight status. The 21-year-old Brazilian propelled Tokyo Verdy to promotion by scoring 37 league goals in 42 appearances in J2 last season, but after failing to settle at Kawasaki Frontale, Hulk has made a permanent switch across the Tama River for a reputed fee of around 500 million yen.On Sunday the highlight clash of the day undoubtedly takes place at Saitama Stadium, when bitter rivals Urawa Reds host de...

Miyajima
2008-04-05 04:39:00
??The cherry blossoms have arrived on Miyajima this week. While this UNESCO World Heritage Site is more famous for its displays of autumn colors, there are plenty of cherry blossoms to be seen along the streets and at Omoto Park and along the nature walk that winds its way along the hills just above the small town. The deer of Miyajima are well known, and to my mind are a lot more "genki" (lively) than the deer of Nara, probably owing to the fact that the Miyajima deer live in the forested mountains and only come down into the town to be fed by the hordes of tourists. From Hiroshima Station, take the JR Line to Miyajima-guchi. It costs 400 yen, and the ride takes about 25 minutes. From there you will take a short ferry ride to the island.Another option is to take street car line #2, which runs from Hiroshima Station past the Atomic Dome and on to Miyajima-guchi, the final stop. It costs 270 yen from Hiroshima, but takes more than an hour.If you are going to be traveling in and around ...
Crofton Maryland’s Own Cherry Blossoms -
2008-04-04 17:18:00
While many people travel to Washington, D.C. from other parts of the country and world to the National Cherry Blossom Festival, we can just travel around Crofton Parkway to see our very own Cherry Blossoms in bloom.  Their initial planting was the brainchild of Crofton resident Kaye Callahan, who spearheaded this project, and generations of Crofton ...
Okazaki Koen
2008-03-31 10:29:00
The cherry blossoms reached full bloom or mankai in Nagoya over the weekend according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency's sakurazensen or blossom forecast.Taking advantage of a day off I ventured to Okazaki Koen,a slow 45 minute,590 yen Meitetsu train ride from Kanayama Station in Nagoya.Once you arrive at Meitetsu Okazaki Koen Mae Station its an eight minute or so walk to the Castle grounds.Reportedly, the park in the grounds of Okazaki Castle is rated as the best in the Tokai Region and is one of the top 100 viewing sites in Japan.Plus I'd never been there before. The castle that currently occupies the site only dates from 1959 and is a five floor, triple roof reconstruction of the original.Entry is 200 yen for individual adults.According to the signboard outside there has been a castle there since the early 15th Century.Okazaki has special historical significance as being the birthplace of Ieyasu Tokugawa and cradle of the Tokugawa Shogunate. With the arrival of the Meiji Re...

Spring Countdown 2008
2008-03-24 09:36:00
Well its almost cherry blossom viewing or "hanami" time again. It seems everything suddenly turns peach or pink be it drinks or postage stamps. The Japanese Meterological Agency announced Saturday cherry blossoms had bloomed in Tokyo and Shizuoka and Kumamoto Prefectures. Here in Nagoya the first cherry blossoms can also be seen.I took this photo in Tsuruma Park early this afternoon.(Monday 24th).In Nagoya the average year on year date for the first blooms to appear is March 28th so these are around 4 days or so earlier than usual. The blossoms reach their fully bloomed state or mankai about a week or so after kaika the date on which the first blossoms appear.Obvivously its difficult to predict when and how quickly the buds will blossom and bloom due to such factors as unseasonable and changeable weather.Cold weather and warm temperatures can affect the flowers.Wind can also play havoc with the tender petals.Another shot over one of the areas in Tsurama Park where hanami parties are hel...

The Korean National Assembly + Cherry Blossoms
2007-04-28 16:30:00
Remember the last time I posted about the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival? Well, it was a case of bad timing because it was the first weekend of the festival and we arrived late in the afternoon--it was screaming busy. I was determined to give it another go but this time I decided to take an alternate route to see the blossoms. After exiting Yeouido station I walked directly towards the Korean National Assembly (which I have yet to see up close and personal). By walking through the National Assembly, I was able to bypass the busy entrance that we tried to enter the first time around. Let's take a look at what I was able to see this time around.Walking towards the National Assembly I passed a bunch of trees growing inside vertical-shaped rectangular blocks. Looks are very important in South Korea and you will see mirrors everywhere, from subway stations to other random parts of the city:These guys were part of a roller blading club that does tricks and other fancy things that normal...

Cherry Blossoms

Yesterday afternoon Andy and I went to the Virginia Beach Cherry Blossom Festival.  We decided this Cherry Blossom Festival was better than the one in DC for several reasons:A.  It was not in DC (DC makes Andy crazy.)B.  It was held at a cute park where Andy I used to hang out when we first ran-away together.  (Other features of said park include a Japanese Garden, a Rose Garden, a Fragrance Garden and a baseball diamond where Andy used to play baseball when he was a little boy).C.  In addition to the live music and beautiful blossoms there was a Samurai sword demonstration.Unfortunately, we missed the sword demonstration.   Although he really wanted to see said demonstration, after an hour Andy said he couldn't take any more of the 'Japanese Hippies' and we left, but not before we got some photos:Cherry Blossoms.More Blossoms...The Japanese Garden.Exhibit of rare Japanese snacks  (you can only get them at the commissary... the grocery stor...

Friday Flash..Cherry Blossoms on the Way
2007-03-16 11:56:00
The Japanese Meteorological Agency has announced that this year will see one of the earliest cherry blossoms seasons on record.Incidentally nation-wide records were first begun in 1953.The Agency calculates blooming times based on temperatures and other factors. This year, the unseasonably warm winter has caused cherry blossoms to flower earlier than usual. The most common cherry blossom tree "someiyoshino" is expected to bloom in Tokyo round March 18 about ten days earlier than normal.Initially an even earlier date was forecast but the recent colder weather caused a revision and todays light snow in Tokyo must also slow down the blossoming buds. Meanwhile in Nagoya the blossoms are predicted sometime around March 20th.Forecast dates for the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions are to announced later this month. The artifical blossoms in the accompanying photo above come from a local Osu shop.
