2008-04-08 04:21:00 Chery has apparently been given the go ahead from authorities in Beijing to start building a new homegrown hybrid car based on their compact A5 sedan. The A5 hybrid is expected to go into production late in 2008 at a price that should start somewhere around $18,500. That sticker would put it well under a Prius or Civic Hybrid which run about $35,000 or more. Other than a 1.3L engine nothing else is known about the Chery hybrid system. Chrysler-Chery production deal may finally be near completion
2008-03-10 21:53:00 The ongoing saga of Chrysler's attempted partnership with Chery Automotive of China may finally be close to a resolution. According to business publication Information Times, a final deal for a joint venture may be near. The American and Chinese companies would each have a fifty percent stake in the manufacturing venture at a new plant with a capacity for 250,000 cars a year. The venture is expected to produce rebadged versions of the Chery A1 (pictured above) and A3 mini cars with Chrysler putting up cash for the deal and Chery providing land and technology. It's not clear if these cars will be offered in the U.S. market but if they are, then Chrysler will be taking a different approach to the low end market from Ford. Ford will be marketing the new Fiesta as a stylish, well-equipped small car that's expected to be profitable for the company. The A1 will be built at Chery's Wuhu plant and exported to Mexico. The A1 is expected to cross the boarder into the United States sometime in 2009, as long as the sub-compact can pass U.S. safety and emissions regulations. The Detroit Free Press reports that the A1 sells for around $7,100 in China, but will have to come with more features and safety equipment to succeed in the United States, likely bumping the price to about $10,000. The least expensive car currently sold in the U.S. is the Chevrolet Aveo5, which starts at $10,560 and includes side-impact airbags as standard equipment. The Aveo5 is built by GM Daewoo in South Korea. The Chery A1 is a similar-shape five-door hatchback. The Dodge version of the A1 is expected to be the first Chinese car sold in the U.S.

The intrepid Chinese automaker Chery has announced that it will introduce a Chrysler variant of its A1 supermini at the Shanghai auto show in April.Developed under the code name S12 and introduced at the Istanbul auto show as the Kimo last autumn and later at the Beijing auto show as the A1, this new minicar will be the successor to Chery's most popular model, the QQ. The QQ was surrounded by much controversy as General Motors threatened to sue Chery, claiming the hatch looked too much like its own Chevrolet Spark. But the two settled the case.The A1 is 145.6 inches long, seats five and is powered by Chery's own 1.3-liter four-cylinder Acteco engine, developed in cooperation with Austrian engine specialist AVL.According to Chery spokesman Wang Wei, Chery will sell the A1 only in its domestic market. 2007-03-14 09:59:00 Chery Automobile, the Chinese auto manufacturer and one of the largest independent Chinese automobile manufacturers and one of the fastest growing automakers in the world, has announced recently its collaboration with a South American company to build bulletproof sedans which its assembly will be based in China.The cars will be produced in conjunction with the Eastern midrange sedan and are intended for export delivery worldwide.
