THE HEALTHY GEEZER - CHEWING GUM CAN CONTRIBUTE TO GAS PAINS
2008-04-21 11:00:00
Q. I get a lot of gas and someone told me it would help if I stopped chewing gum all the time (ex-smoker). That sounds like bunk to me. What do you think?A. It’s not bunk. When you chew gum, you swallow more often and some of what you're swallowing is air. In addition, artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol that is found in some gums can give you gas. But, what exactly, is gas? Most people produce between a pint and a half-gallon of gas each day. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen from swallowed air make up a large part of gas or “flatus.” Fermenting foods in the colon produce hydrogen and methane as well as carbon dioxide and oxygen. The unpleasant odor of some flatus is the result of trace gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, indole, and skatole, which are produced when foods decompose in the colon. We release gas upwardly by belching and downwardly by flatulence. When we swallow air and don’t release it by belching, the air will work its way down and out the rectum. About half...

Sever weight loss caused by chewing gum
2008-01-13 04:39:00
In this week?s BMJ, doctors warn of excess sorbitol intake, a widely used sweetener in ?sugar-free? products such as chewing gum and sweets.Sorbitol has laxative properties and is poorly absorbed by the small intestine.Their advice follows the cases of two patients with chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain and severe weight loss. Although extensive investigations were carried out, final diagnosis was only established after detailed analysis of eating habits. On questioning, both patients admitted consuming substantial amountsof sugar-free gum andsweets. The first patient (a 21 year old woman) chewed large amounts of sugar-free gum, accounting for a total daily dose of 18-20g sorbitol (one stick of chewing gumcontains about 1.25g sorbitol). The second patient (a 46 year old man) reported chewing 20 sticks of sugar-free gum and eating up to 200g of sweets each day, which together contained around 30g sorbitol. After both patients started a sorbitol free diet, diarrhoea subsided, normal bowel ...
Sweetener in Chewing Gum Can Damage Your Health
2008-01-11 06:03:00
A sweetener used in sugar-free chewing gum, some toothpastes and thousands of other products could be a severe health risk, doctors warned.Sorbitol, also known as E 420, can trigger severe weight loss, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.A report in the British Medical Journal today highlights the cases of patients who lost up to a fifth of their bodyweight. The cause was eventually traced to excess intake of sorbitol - one was eating 14-20 sticks of gum a day.Dentists recommend chewing sugarfree gum to increase saliva production, which reduces cavities and strengthens teeth.Wrigley, which owns many of the brands sold in the UK, has seen its sales in Europe grow by a third since Sorbitol is also used in sugar-free sweets, some cereals and foods aimed at diabetics. But gastroenterology experts in Germany say many consumers - and even some doctors - are unaware of the laxative side-effects of sorbitol, which can also hinder the absorption of nutrients into the small intestine.Professor Herbert...
Walking and chewing gum at the same time
2008-01-06 11:32:00
The following appears at the beginning of an article in The Telegraph about the burden of e-mail:In the London Library, the natural habitat of the London writer, there are two main rooms where people work. In one, the Reading Room, people do exactly that - read.In the other, the Computer Room, they tap away on computers.Over the past couple of years, I've noticed an odd thing. The really prolific and distinguished writers - A N Wilson, Sir Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett - tend to sit still, reading in the Reading Room. to which I responded:The reason "the really prolific and distinguished writers" have so much to write about is that they do exactly that. It's the old principle from Ecclesiastes 3 that there is a time for everything. They have learned what our parents tried to hammer into us that you can't do two things at the same time to which we responded by sticking a piece of chewing gum in our mouths and walking out the door taking care to slam it behind us of course.Oh we knew i...

This journal of mine is to basically prove myself wrong, where I gave a 5 mins lecture to a friend regarding the damages caused by Chewing gums without any research, so as just to check up my blind research I did some real research on this one and to my surprise I was WRONG. So I thought to share it with U guys what I actually found and yeah I want to clear this to my friend that ?Excess of Everything is BAD??For me it was a misconception that chewing too much gum was bad for health and yeah indeed it is when it comes towards the case of sweetened gums, as it causes cavities and certain gum diseases, but yet Scientists are finding evidence that gum chewing may be good for our health. It may even help boost test scores. Meantime, I even read that these days companies are also experimenting with adding vitamins, minerals, medicines, and other substances that could give gum the power to cure headaches and fight everything from serious diseases to bad breath. Chewing Gum Stuck In Your Hair
2007-12-03 04:26:00
Although chewing gums are banned in Singapore, my cousins managed to "smuggle" some in. When I was young, I was chewing some gum while massaging my mom's head. Being a naughty child, I placed the gum onto my mom's hair, and I got panicked! *^@#$!!!I can't remove them at all! So I grabbed a nail clipper, and start cutting her hair.Mom: "What are you doing?"Me: "Errr....nothing."Luckily the gum was at the ends of the hair. If it was at the roots, she would have one bald patch =P Sorry mommy... (She still doesn't know about this situation yet...sshhhhh!) If you are experiencing this similar situation, all you can do is to apply a generous amount of peanut butter and rub the gum till it comes out. Easy, and all you need is patience!According to 1st-time-mom.com, you can also apply salad oil other than peanut butter.

Non-stick chewing gum!
2007-09-19 00:52:00
Wouldn't it be great if gum never got stuck on your shoes, carpet, in your kids hair? Gum is popular, especially with kids. So if you have a kid, chances are your kid has chewed gum, whether you let them or not, and chances are you have had gum stuck in the strangest of places."Revolymer, a Bristol University spin-out company, claims that it has created a new material which can be added to gum that makes it much easier to remove from surfaces.""The material is formed from long chains of molecules, called polymers, which have both water-loving (hydrophilic) and water-hating (hydrophobic), and therefore oil-loving, properties. The polymer's affinity for oil means that it can be easily mixed into the rest of the ingredients needed to create chewing gum; but it is its attraction to water that gives it its non-stick abilities.Chief Scientific Officer of Revolymer, Professor Terence Cosgrove, said: "The hydrophilic coating means that you always get a film of water around the gum and th...

British Scientists Develop Non Stick Chewing Gum
2007-09-14 12:35:00
LONDON (Reuters) - British scientists have developed a non-stick chewing gum that can be easily removed from pavements, shoes and clothes. The new gum, the result of polymer research at the University of Bristol, could be launched commercially in 2008, its backers said on Friday."The advantage of our Clean Gum is that it has a great taste, it is easy to remove and has the potential to be environmentally degradable," said Terence Cosgrove, a professor of chemistry who helped found a company called Revolymer to commercialize the technology.Today's chewing gums are made from synthetic latex, which is resistant to the weather and is strongly adhesive. The new gum adds a special polymer to modify its properties, making it far less sticky. In two street trials, leading commercial gums remained stuck to the pavement three out or four times, while Clean Gum came away naturally within 24 hours in all cases, Revolymer said.
Look out MacGyver! New Non-stick Chewing Gum Discovered
2007-09-14 10:25:00
Apparently things are happening over in the UK as British have developed a new type of chewing gum. Normally gum will stick to the pavement, and then it gets stuck on your shoe. As you struggle to get the fiendish goo off you inadvertently get it all over your shirt and once you realize that this has been in someone's mouth you drop it back on the pavement for the next lucky winner. No more thanks to Clean Gum from Revolymer. The advantage of our Clean Gum is that it has a great taste, it is easy to remove and has the potential to be environmentally degradable, said Terence Cosgrove, a professor of chemistry who helped found Revolymer. In researching this I've discovered that most gum contains a form of latex. This new formula introduces a polymer that modifies it's normally properties, thus, no stick'em. The company preformed various tests and the regular gum will stick to the pavement 3 out of 4 times. Clean Gum was always able to be removed within 24 hours. It also app...
