Online Photo Exhibition--"An Answerless Search?"

For the last 9 months, I have called Chiang Mai, Thailand home. Today--May 12th--a sense of anxious accomplishment fills me as I begin my return trip to America. I wouldn't say I am ready to leave this beautiful country nor am I ready to leave the friends and influential people I have had the pleasure to be with; but, I am ready to return to Wisconsin and try and pass on some of what I have gained from Northern Thailand.I have spent second semester at Chiang Mai University studying Introductory Photography with Ajarn Por. It has been an extremely rewarding experience, and I ended up putting many more hours into it than I had originally anticipated. I am deeply grateful to Ajarn Por for his instruction and encouragement throughout the semester. Through the experience of photography I have had the chance to interact with a number of Thai people that I probably would not have met without a camera in my hand and the courage to ask "????????????? (Can I take your photo?)": street mus...
A Day on the Mekong--Chiang Khong, Thailand to Luang Prabang, Laos
2008-04-06 13:48:00
An American-style Breakfast was waiting for us when we woke this morning at 8:00a.m.at the Namkhong Guesthouse in Chiang Khong (ChiangKhong.com, iChiangRai.com, Wikitravel, Wikipedia, Travelfish.org. The breakfast and a take away lunch were included in the price of the package that we had purchased from Sabai Tours to get us from Chiang Mai, Thailiand to Luang Prabang, Laos. After breakfast a 9:00 a.m. ferry (also included in the package) took us to Laos across the the Mekong River (Wikipedia.com, Mekong River Commission, InternationalRivers.org, InfoMekong.com, MekongRiver.org), World Wildlife Fund). We obtained Lao Visas at the border for $36.00 (only U.S. dollars are accepted), and a taxi (included in the package) had us on our way to the fast-boat docks in by 10:00 a.m.When we saw what we would be riding in for the next 6 hours, Kim, Tyler, Sonja and I all took a second look. The low-riding boats were made to seat 8 (plus a driver). However, there didn't appear to be much leg r...
Chiang Mai to the Laos Border--an Easy Trip
2008-04-05 16:13:00
A few days before Kim and Tyler arrived I booked a tour package from Sabai Tours that would take us from Chiang Mai, Thailand to Luang Prabang, Laos. We had two options: the fast-boat and the slow-boat. I opted for the fast boat which was a little more expensive--2300 baht vs. 1600 baht. In Pai (Pai Town--Accidents and Hippies blog entry) I had met a girl form Swenden, Sonja, who was interested in joining us for part of our trip through Laos, so I had booked four tickets. The first leg of our package was a 5 hour minibus ride from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong (ChiangKhong.com, iChiangRai.com, Wikitravel, Wikipedia, Travelfish.org)--Chiang Khong is located in Chiang Rai Province and is separated from Laos by the 12the largest river in the world--the Mekong River (Wikipedia.com, Mekong River Commission, InternationalRivers.org, InfoMekong.com, MekongRiver.org), World Wildlife Fund).Today, the minibus ride was easy and comfortable. Our driver made a couple of stops along the way, an...

CHIANG RAI (GOLDEN TRIANGLE) - Thailand
2007-12-29 20:38:00
In a region where even the tuk-tuk drivers may address you as "Monsieur", it's tempting to link the French Connection to the mythical poppies in the hidden valleys and the supposed narcotics warlords in the dining rooms of the five-star hotels mushrooming across the notorious Golden Triangle. It seems more likely, however, that north Thailand's multilingual roots lie in the former French colonial presence across the Mekong River in Laos, rather than in the illicit trade routes fanning out across the globe to the world's great metropolises.Chiang Rai's dusty modernity belies its ancient history as an important trading center. It was founded as a walled city by King Mengrai in 1262, over thirty years before his 'New City' of Chiang Mai. Now linked to the outside world by air via Chiang Mai and bangkok, the little town sprawls along the neighbor, although Wat Kok River. It has fewer distinguished monasteries than its southern neighbor, although Wat Phra Kaew is a fine example of ...
Chiang Rai Field Trip
2007-11-02 05:28:00
At 11:00 a.m. on October 19th, 11 people (4 American students, 4 Thai students, 1 professor, 1 staff member, and a driver) climbed into a single van headed for Chiang Rai province. The College Year in Thailand was heading on its first field trip. We drove north from Chiang Mai, through the rolling mountains and valleys. 5 hours and a lunch later we arrived at our hotel in Chiang Khong, located on the border of Thailand and Laos. Our hotel was located right on the Mekhong River and we quickly put our stuff away to get our first glimpse.~our first view of the Mekhong River~~a fisherman on the Mekhong River~~boats, in the Mekhong River, heading south~After relaxing for a bit, we set out for a walk around Chiang Khong. This rather small settlement has a much contested history and is worth a visit. The border has been opened to Laos at this location, in the not so distant past--so tourist can cross at this point. However, the atmosphere remains laid back. We checked out a couple of templ...

Wat Pa Sak : Chiang Rai
2007-06-16 11:15:00
Located outside the city walls, some 200 metres from the Tourist Service Centre, this deserted temple, with ornamental stucco motifs, is regarded as being one of the most beautiful examples of Lanna architecture in northern Thailand. In 1295, Prince Saen Phu built this temple to contain Buddha's relics. He also had 300 teak trees planted in the temple compound. Wat Pa Sak sits on 16 acre of land. There are 22 historic remains on the temple grounds. The main bell-shaped chedi has five tapering spires. The chedi at Wat Pa Sak are considered to be the best physical condition as well as the most beautiful of Lanna Style. The pattern and design on the chedi reflect artistic development in Chiang Saen, revealing its original adoption of Sukhothai, Pagan (Phukam), and Hariphunchai artistric styles. Through the process of cultural transformation, a unique Chiang Saen style was realized. It has since become the prototype of Lanna chedis.Related Tags: Chiangmai/Wat Pa Sak/Wat/thai ...
