Are You Ready For Some Throwball???
2008-04-25 16:33:00
This is once again a huge sports weekend and since my wife is out of town for a work related convention, I’ll have the TV all to myself! That means, nothing but sports. In fact, its going to mean doing a lot of flipping back and forth between sports events. I wish I had that ...

Former Chicago Fire Goalkeeper Completes Move To QPR
2008-02-09 04:38:00
Well one of my favorite Chicago Fire players will now suit up for one of the clubs I truly despise. All-Star Goalkeeper Matt Pickens has finalized his transfer to Queens Park Rangers. He will remain with the club until the end of the season but hopes to remain with the squad beyond that point. “I ...

Fire Keep Gutierrez
2008-02-06 03:58:00
The Chicago Fire have re-signed 35 year old Diego Gutierrez for one final season. The gritty midfielder and Fire original will retire at the end of the season. Diego has 12 goals & 42 assists in his MLS career. You can’t measure Diego’s contribution to the squad by looking at just goals. This guy is very tough ...

Site Update: Two New RSS Feeds
2007-11-27 20:21:00
I've added 2 more news feeds so you can get your ...well... news on. Since this is my blog, I'm going to promote MY TEAMS. Seems only right. Anyways, I've added an RSS news feed from Fulham FC's official website as well as a feed from a great Chicago Fire blog. Hope you enjoy them both.I'm going to see I can get my talented wife to clean up the design a bit here at the start of 2008 in order to make this blog a little easier to navigate. I wouldn't expect it until after the holidays though, as she is pretty busy working on projects at the moment.

MLS: New England Ends Chicago's Dream
2007-11-09 15:03:00
Chicago's dream of playing for the MLS Cup was squashed last night as the New England Revolution defeated the Fire 1-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals. Taylor Twellman's "bicycle kick" goal in the 38th minute was the difference in the game. Revs goal keeper Matt Reis also had an oustanding game.Hats off to the Fire. Prior to the All Star game, the club seemed to be dead in the water, but played near perfect soccer in the second half of the season. With everyone back and healthy, I feel Chicago will be considered one of the favorites to win the Eastern Conference next season. New England will now move on to the MLS Cup finals to take on either Kansas City or Houston. Congrats goes out to New England I suppose, but I hope whoever wins out west will show up at RFK next weekend and knock the snot out of you. I hate New England!

MLS: Eastern Conference Finals Tonight!
2007-11-08 14:31:00
The Chicago Fire travel to New England tonight to take on Taylor Twellman & the Revolution. The game kicks off at 7:30pm ET and can be seen on ESPN2.Chicago defeated New England twice this season while the Revs lead the all-time series 13-12-6. New England has eliminated the Fire two straight years in the playoffs. It should be an exciting match. Look for both teams to basically freeze their nuts off tonight, as it is expected to be pretty chilly. Both teams ended the regular season on a roll. New England has the home field advantage and many people feel that will be enough to secure a spot in the MLS Cup Finals next weekend. However, Chicago will look to score early and rely on their defense to win the game. Chicago kills the clock like no other team in Major League Soccer. My Prediction:Fire-1Revolution-0Th-ere is no way New England knocks Chicago out of the playoffs 3 straight years. Plus I'm a Fire supporter who happens to hate the Revs with a passion, so what do you expect?, ...

MLS: Conference Finals
2007-11-05 15:06:00
The final 2 pieces of the Conference Final puzzle were filled over the weekend with New England defeating New York 1-0 and Kansas City advancing on aggregate over Chivas USA. So the MLS Conference Finals are set.Eastern Conference FinalsChicago Fire at New England RevolutionThursday-7:30pm ET-ESPN2I must admit, as a Fire supporter, I would rather see Chicago play New York this week. Right now, New England is the team to beat in the playoffs. Even though D.C. United finished the regular season with the best record in Major League Soccer, I felt New England was on a roll heading into the playoffs. New England is looking to pull off the "double" as they won the U.S. Open Cup earlier this fall.Western Conference FinalsKansas City Wizards at Houston DynamoSaturday-9:30pm-Fox Soccer Channel & HDNetKansas City knocked off the #1 seed out west, while Houston defeated FC Dallas after a very entertaining 2 games + (game finished in overtime). Houston won the MLS Cup a year ago and look to...

MLS: Fire Survive & Advance
2007-11-03 16:36:00
Yesterday I was very busy even though I had the day off work, so I didn't have a chance to discuss the Fire vs United match from Thursday night, so I will do so now briefly.Chicago's Chad Barrett & Chris Rolfe scored goals in the 31st & 33rd minute, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead. D.C. United fought back in the second half to tie the score at 2-2 but the Fire would survive the comeback effort and advance to the MLS Eastern Conference Finals next weekend by defeating United 3-2 (aggregate). I am thrilled to see the Fire pull off the upset.Chicago will travel to either New England or New York next week, depending on the outcome of tonight's match. The Revs & Red Bulls head into leg 2 tied at 0-0.Last night, Houston defeated F.C. Dallas in overtime to advance to the Western Conference Finals.

MLS: Fire Look To Advance
2007-11-01 14:31:00
Tonight the second leg of the MLS Conference Semi-Finals resumes as the Chicago Fire take on D.C. United. The Fire enter the match with a 1-0 advantage after the first leg in Chicago last Thursday. The game will be televised on ESPN2 with a 7:30pm kick off.I must admit, I'm a little bit worried. United is tough to beat at home and the last I heard, they are entering the game 100% healthy. Chicago must come out with the intention to score goals and not simply rely on their defense to secure a 0-0 draw. Yes, a 1 goal lead is a nice advantage, but they are a mere 2 goals away from going home for the winter.Should be an exciting match. RFK stadium is a tough place to win, especially with all the "Screamin' Eagles" bouncing around the entire match. I can't pick against my Fire, so I'll go with a 1-1 draw, which would send the Fire through to the second round.

MLS: Fire Strike First
2007-10-26 15:50:00
The Chicago Fire will travel to Washington D.C. next Thursday on a high note as they took a 1-0 aggregate lead last night over favorites D.C. United. Chris Rolfe fired in a great looking goal in the 14th minute and Chicago's defense was up to the challenge the rest of the night. For Rolfe, it was his first career playoff goal. It won't be easy but I'm confident Chicago will earn at least a draw next week, which would send them through to the Eastern Conference Finals.

MLS: Fire & D.C. Kick Off Post Season Tonight
2007-10-25 14:25:00
Ten years ago during Chicago's "rookie" season in Major League Soccer, they pulled off the impossible when they defeated D.C. United in the Rose Bowl to capture their first MLS Cup. Since then the Fire has won a couple U.S. Open Cups but have failed to win the big one. Tonight the two teams meet again in the Eastern Conference semi-finals as the 2007 MLS Cup Playoffs begin at Toyota Park in Chicago. This will be a two game series based on aggregate scoring. For C.J. Brown, Diego Gutierrez & Chris Armas, this could be their final opportunity to win a championship, as all three of those players were on that Fire team that won it all 10 years ago. Chicago played poorly at the start of the season, hampered a bit by injuries and a coach who couldn't ride the storm out. Replace the coach, get a healthy Chris Rolfe back and add Mexican superstar Blanco and suddenly Chicago caught on...well...Fire.D.C. United enters the game as the holders of the Supporters Shield, which is awarded to ...

MLS: Playoffs Are Set
2007-10-22 15:55:00
It not only came down to the final regular season game, but it came down to the final minutes of the final regular season game before the MLS playoffs were set.Chicago Fire reserve John Thorrington scored in stoppage time to help Chicago secure the final playoff spot with a 1-0 victory over the star studded L.A. Galaxy. The loss sent L.A. back home for the playoffs, so now Becks can spend the off season healing and bangin' his hot pop star wife.So congrats to the FIRE! I was a very frustrated supporter at the start of the season but to see the Fire improve so much during the second half of the season leads me to believe that they could shock everyone and play in the MLS Cup Finals. Here are your playoff match ups. Keep in mind that the first round will be a home & home series, based on aggregate scoring.MLS PLAYOFFS-CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALSFirst LegD.C. 2007-10-15 15:54:00
The race for the 8th and final playoff spot heated up this past weekend and as we head into the final week of the regular season, it's still anyone's guess who will secure the final playoff spot. Here is the updated MLS standing for the FINAL playoff spot:7. Dallas Saturday, Colorado will play host to Real Salt Lake Saturday and the Columbus Crew will travel to Washington to take on D.C. United. Here is how I see the standings for the final playoff spot as we progress through the week, starting with Friday morning.7. Chicago Fire- 37 points8. Kansas City- 37 points*...

MLS: Big Weekend For Bubble Teams
2007-10-13 06:48:00
It's a big weekend for teams either hanging onto playoff spots and those on the bubble. The Kansas City Wizards & Chicago Fire can both clinch the final 2 playoff spots this weekend. It's an easier road for Kansas City, as they simply need a victory. It's a little tougher for the Fire as they will need to beat D.C. United and hope the teams chasing them for that final playoff spot lose.It should be a very interesting weekend of action, with Saturday providing the most excitement. On a side note, David Beckham was expected to play Saturday but will miss the game as he is still trying to recover from that nagging knee injury. Bad for the Galaxy, good for my FIRE!!!MLS This WeekendSaturdayChicago Fire vs D.C. UnitedColumbus Crew vs New England RevolutionKansas City Wizards vs New York Red BullsToronto F.C. vs L.A. MLS: Fire Defeat Revs 2-1
2007-10-07 14:58:00
Chris Rolfe & Chad Barrett fired in goals to pace the Chicago Fire victory last night over the New England Revolution by a score of 2-1.New England scored first in the 24th minute on a Jeff Larentowicz goal, but from that point on, it was all Fire. The home supporters were really into this game from start to finish and seeing as how I was just hoping for a draw, the win is a very sweet. The Columbus Crew lost last night so depending on what happens today with the Rapids & Galaxy, Chicago could head into next week feeling very comfortable with their hold on the 8th and final playoff spot.

MLS: The Race For 8th Place
2007-10-06 06:37:00
When you start the season, you're goal is to be in first place by the end of the season. Four MLS teams are dreaming of an 8th place finish. Why is that so important? Because 8th place will get you in the MLS Playoffs. My Chicago Fire currently hold the 8th spot but keeping the final playoff spot will be a true test of will. I have a feeling the final playoff spot will not be determined until the final week of the season.Currently nipping at the heels of the Fire are the Columbus Crew, Colorado Rapids and the L.A. Galaxy, who will see the return of David Beckham next week. I honestly feel L.A. could go on a tear and when they meet Chicago in the final game of the season, the final playoff spot could be on the line that night. Should make for some interesting drama as the final 3 games of the season play out. Here are the standings for the 8th playoff spot:8th. Chicago Fire- (8-10-9) 33 pts9th. Columbus Crew- (7-10-10) 31 pts10th. Colorado Rapids- (7-12-8) 29 pts11th. L.A. Galaxy- (7-...
