The Brazilian Blowout Hoax, Part 3: OSHA Botches Study, Media Blames Compa
2011-11-22 23:42:00
Contrary to recent media reports, the Brazilian Blowout hair treatment is safe for use. You’d never know it, though, because the mainstream media has been perpetuating one myth after another about Brazilian Blowout while ignoring the facts. Last time, I wrote about a hatchet job made to appear as a legitimate study ...

Screengrab: Chicago Tribune online ad, story eerily similar
2009-09-15 20:02:00
I knew there would be a moment at which art and life danced together in the Wonderful World of Corruption we call home. So imagine my surprised when I refreshed the front page of the Chicago Tribune's Web site today and noticed that the story about Christopher Kelly's apparent suicide (via rat poison...really?) was opposite an advertisement for the upcoming CBS series The Good Wife, which shouldn't be seen as commentary on his survivors, since it premieres Sept. 22 and is about the wife of a sex-scandal-disgraced politician (those tend to be from New York) who is who joins a law firm to support her family. What a stretch, right?...
Is Jay Mariotti coming to Chicago Tribune?
2009-08-10 20:18:00
Rumors are spreading like wildfire across the blogosphere and Twitter that the Chicago Tribune will be the new home to Jay Mariotti's weekly sports column starting September 1. However, the Tribune has made no official statement about hiring him. The former Sun-Times sports columnist was known to get a rise out of Chicagoans with his highly debatable content, playing devil's advocate time and time again....
Introducing Lori Waxman, Freelance Art Critic for the Chicago Tribune
2009-07-03 22:07:00
Hey, I just got the link for Lori Waxman's latest review in the Tribune. It can't be found by searching the Tribune.com site. http://www.chicagotribune.com/f-eatures/arts/chi-0703-galleries--reviewjul03,0,4752311.story She's covering the West Loop and does a great job. She actually tackles it, whereas I just hid under the rug and described Secrist's gallery through quotes from the movie "Repo Man". But I took lots of pictures  http://bit.ly/pLXhS, and then a seriously awful panorama shot of Kavi Gupta's exhibit: http://bit.ly/D53LI So combine Lori's review with my pictures and you'll really be cooking with gas. I'm also excited to point out Waxman's work because:  A. she's a hell of an art critic, she's out of New York, and has more art knowledge in her pinky than...

Chicago Tribune "Commercial real estate slump more apparent in suburbs"
2008-05-09 03:00:00
With the plethora of space that is available in downtown Chicago and continues to be built, as well as the high cost of parking and the long travel times, it is interesting to find out that the suburbs have actually felt a bigger slump in commercial real estate. The Chicago Tribune cites to an analysis by MB Real Estate, which found that "the overall vacancy rate for downtown increased from about 11.7 percent in the final three months of 2007 to 12.3 percent in the first quarter of 2008. Those numbers, while not exhilarating, are certainly better than Chicago saw in the early 1990s when vacancies soared. But in the suburbs, MB Real Estate found, the vacancy rate rose from 16.1 percent in the last quarter of 2007 to 17.3 percent in the first quarter of this year." While it is easier to travel within the suburbs, where there is ample free parking, limited rush periods and none of the aggravation that you find in the City of Chicago, the fact re...

Beyond LonelyGirl: Still Searching For A Web TV Smash
2008-04-28 18:18:00
Back in 2006 I wrote a short blog post about Cherub, a then popular internet-only TV series about a vampire with pink bunny slippers. Noting that there had to be more to streaming online entertainment than "YouTube cat-on-rollerskate videos", I mused that the first scripted web TV smash-hit couldn't be far off. Well, two years later -- an eternity by internet standards -- we're still waiting.

It was at a time when a lot of moguls were looking at getting into journalism. I think it was mostly over the Tribune Company, Sam Zell, but also David Geffen and some other people. I suggested that maybe Poynter or Knight or one of the other non-profits might consider doing either a private presentation or seminar for some of these moguls and get them early on and say, ?Here?s the business side, but here?s also the side that you really can?t add up.? And that?s the stuff that you?re talking about that the Miami Herald is in Miami, the Chicago Tribune is in Chicago, and this is what it adds to the community, and this is what goes beyond. Chicago Tribune Reviews PJ Harvey's White Chalk
2007-09-26 14:16:00
"White Chalk" is a different kind of extreme altogether. Harvey has discarded her ravenous guitar and in-your-face growl, at least for the moment. She has replaced them with a piano -- an instrument she had never played before -- and eerily high, haunted vocals. This is above all an exercise in theater, comparable in its audacity (if not its sound) to her 1995 masterpiece, "To Bring You My Love." On that album, she played a red-dressed femme fatale in a seedy film noir."White Chalk" finds her playing a different role: a ghost. Apparitions haunt every song -- the absent lover in "The Piano," the unborn child in "When Under Ether," the narrator's grandmother in "To Talk to You."Read the complete review here.
