Why Aren?t National Media Descending on Chicago?
2008-09-25 21:37:00
Recall how the national media swarmed to Anchorage after John McCain tapped Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. They were looking into every nook and cranny of the Last Frontier to find anything this good woman had done in her sixteen years on the public stage–and even before. They’ve made an issue of her ...

Post-pwnd Game Thread: Chicago Cubs @ Houston Astros, TBD
2008-09-12 18:00:00
So there was supposed to be a game today between the Jason-Marquis-led Chicago Cubs, and the Houston Astros.  Unfortunately, the game has been postponed due to horrible weather- Hurricane Ike is expected to make landfall sometime tonight or Saturday morning. So I'm turning this into an off-base diary. In Hartford, Hereford, and Hampshire, Hurricanes Hardly ever Happen First Base A perhaps new-ish version of Will It Blend? Second Base This man deserves a high-five from all of us! Now, I don't want to say I'm personally biased in favor of Mike Fontenot because he and I are approximately the same height, because that would be a lie.  I'm personally biased in favor of Mike Fontenot because I made a sign for him that I forgot to bring to the game, so I feel guilty. But Mike Fontenot deserves some recognition for how well he has played. He has a higher VORP than Kosuke Fukudome, even though he has less than half the plate appearances.  He has a higher OPS than anyon...

5 million in five hours for McCain… In Chicago?
2008-09-09 15:19:00
CHICAGO (CBS) ― Republican John McCain raised about $5 million in Chicago Monday night, or about $1 million for each hour he spent in Democrat Barack Obama’s home town. CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports the only glimpse of McCain the public got came as his motorcade departed. Like every Republican presidential nominee since 1984, McCain appears to regard campaigning in heavily Democratic Illinois a waste of time.   Gee, maybe not, given those numbers. That speaks to me of distatse for Obama… even in his hometown. It seems reasonable to consider the idea that the polling data we’re seeing of late seriously under-estimates how much support Obama has lost. Ya Can't Win 'Em All...Chicago White Sox 4 Boston Red Sox 2
2008-09-01 10:49:00
Sunday in Boston's Fenway Park was beautiful, at least weather-wise. But the Red Sox could not complete the sweep of the Chicago White Sox. They were on the short end of a 4-2 score. Good pitching beat good hitting once again, as Jays pitcher Gavin Floyd survived a terrible first inning (in terms of pitch count and runners allowed on base, not runs scored) but seemed to get stronger as the innings rolled by. Here's what Tito Francona had to say... "We really worked Floyd in the first inning. Then he got comfortable and started throwing that breaking ball. He could throw it at the hitter, he could throw it away, and he could throw it for strikes. We couldn't break through."Peter here, and no, the Red Sox just couldn't get that BIG hit. They left 11 men on base, and that might be the most telling stat of all. Boston had a total of 8 hits, but none of them were clutch hits, hits that score a run or three. Timmy Wakefield had a good outing, going six innings and giving up six hits a...
PEDEY, With Four Hits, Leads The Way Again...Boston 8 Chicago 2
2008-08-31 10:17:00
Dustin "Pedey" Pedroia kept his power show going for the second game in a row. He was 4-4 in Boston's 8-2 rout of the White Sox, their 8th win in the last 11 games. What a great time for this world championship team to get hot, and on fire they are. With Kevin Youkilis out, apparently just feeling "under the weather," Pedey was the clean up batter, and late in the game with Big Papi on third, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen actually walked him intentionally. Now that's a compliment! Here are two more kudos...?This guy right now is on fire,? Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. ?No matter what you throw there, he?s going to get it.?We did a good job,? Jason Varitek said, ?led by our little man."Right you are, Ozzie and Jason. And here's what Pedey's manager said about placing him in the cleanup spot of the order...?I?ll never hear the end of this,? said Francona before the game about batting Pedroia fourth. ?Pedroia said this was long overdue and Ortiz said he was retiring.?Peter ...
Pedey & Daisuke Fuel Sox Win...Boston 8 Chicago 0 ***BECKETT'S ELBOW OK***
2008-08-30 10:41:00
Good news galore for Boston Red Sox fans the world over on this early Saturday morning. First up is last night's Fenway Park win, an 8-0 shellacking of the Chicago White Sox. Daisuke Matsuzka pitched his finest game of the season, going 8 innings and allowing only 2 hits while walking only 2 (that's way low for him!) and striking out 7. He was in command from first pitch to last. Mike Timlin pitched a clean and meaningless ninth. I've said many times so far this year that if Daisuke can begin a game with his control, which sometimes is so lacking, and maintain that ability to put the ball in the zone, he would have an amazing start. And that's just what he did. Great job, Daisuke. Now on to the Red Sox offense. Dustin Pedroia continued his unbelievable 2008 season by going 4-4, Big Papi had a 3 hit game and Jason Bay had a bases-clearing double. The Sox banged out 15 hits in all, and they controlled the ebbs and flows of this one. Dustin Pedroia is getting respect from all aroun...
A Study In Blues: From Delta To Chicago To Texas

To evaluate almost a century of blues recordings and narrow it down to thirty albums takes much thought. First and foremost, you must include recordings that were important for their wide influence. Early Delta musicians like Charlie Patton and Son House influenced Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, respectively, who themselves started in the Delta and ...

Chicago Notes

Why do people, more specifically, women, dress up to go shopping? I would think that you would want to dress comfortably and wear clothes that are easy to take on and off in case you would like to try on new clothes at the stores. Is this a Pretty Woman thing (meaning that a "nice" store wouldn?t want your business if you?re not dressed well)? I saw a billboard for Chicago?s True Oldies radio station 94.7, which simply stated Monkees, Stones, Aretha. Now I like the Monkees (I?m sure that you are shocked by this statement based on my recent Neil Diamond posts), but they really don?t belong in the same class as The Rolling Stones or Aretha Franklin. The Oldies station may want to include The Beatles on its next billboards. I ate dinner at an Italian restaurant in my fancy Chicago hotel and noticed something odd. There was a living fly stuck inside the parmesan cheese container on my table. I pointed it out to my waiter who looked confused when I asked him to remove the cheese. ...
Greetings from Chicago
2008-08-03 16:16:00
So I?m at my fancy Chicago hotel where internet service costs $13+ per day. On Saturday afternoon, I was talking to my wife on the phone about the day. I tell her that I am waiting in line to talk to the hotel staff about a problem I am having with my room. Her response: "Did you stuff up the toilet?" I love my wife! For the record, my toilet was fine unlike other trips I have taken over the years. Apparently, my upstairs neighbor decided to hang a shirt on one of the sprinkler heads. Not a good idea. When I returned to my room on Friday night, I noticed that the entryway was wet. The hotel?s assistant manager called me about a half hour later to see if I noticed the problem and offered to move me to a new room. Since it was already after 10:00pm, I had unpacked and it really didn?t bother me (as long as I didn?t walk barefoot or in socks to the closet), I decided to stay. The assistant manager said that housekeeping staff and/or maintenance would take care of everything ...

Buying Low: Nick Swisher And The Chicago White Sox Hitters
2008-06-09 13:16:00
From Steve Gardner's chat at USA Today:Sparks,Nevada: Greetings Steve. From this point forward who is more productive. Konerko, Swisher, or C.Pena? Thanks Steve Gardner: I drafted Konerko and Pena on my AL LABR team and I've since traded both of them, so that shows you where I stand to some degree. Of course, I they still have some value since another owner was willing to trade for them, but I don't see how it can go much lower. Konerko seems to be heating up a little (two hits in each of last three games), but his wrist has been bothering him for a while now. With Pena, we just might have to chalk up last season as a fluke since he's back to his old ways, striking out and hitting a handful of homers. I'd be the most confident in Swisher putting up the best numbers from here on out. He's healthy and young enough that he's not set in his ways. Plus, he gets on base. He's also had at least one run scored in each of the past 7 games. I happen to agree on Swisher. As a matter of...
