Chief Justice High Court Hyderabad Deccan Nazim ud Din Hassan
2009-03-21 08:20:00
Nazim ud Din Hassan was the Chief Justice High Court Hyderabad Deccan. Josh Malih Abadi has reminisced in his memoirs Yadoon Ki Barat some of the ways of Nazim ud Din?s life:The Chief Justice once asked his servant to bring match box, used it and gave him back who put it in the centre of the table. Nazim ud Din fined rupees two to his servant because he had put the match box in the centre of the table whereas he had picked it up from eastern corner.A few youngsters of Lakhnow established a club, named it Muslim Qalb and requested the Chief Justice to inaugurate. Nazim ud Din arrived at the venue but refused to perform inauguration ritual after seeing the plaque. ?Qalb means dog (in Persian). Write Qylab instead and I will gladly unveil,? the Chief Justice said. Inauguration was done after the change.Once Nazim ud Din was shopping in Aminabad Park using umbrella! One of his informal friends saw him and remarked during night, ?Wah, using umbrella at night?? Nazim ud Din answered back,...

Chief Justice Roberts Defends ExxonMobil..Exxon Pleads for Relief in Alaska
2008-02-29 07:03:00
thinkprogress.orgYesterday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on how much money ExxonMobil should be forced to pay as damages for its Exxon Valdez oil spill 19 years ago. The Washington Post's Dana Milbank notes that Chief Justice John Roberts appeared "bothered" that Exxon might have to pay for its destruction:What bothered the chief justice was that Exxon was being ordered to pay $2.5 billion -- roughly three weeks' worth of profits -- for destroying a long swath of the Alaska coastline in the largest oil spill in American history."So what can a corporation do to protect itself against punitive-damages awards such as this?" Roberts asked in court. The lawyer arguing for the Alaska fishermen affected by the spill, Jeffrey Fisher, had an idea. "Well," he said, "it can hire fit and competent people."The spill forced the closure of Alaskan fisheries and killed more than 250,000 sea birds, 3,000 otters, 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles and 22 whales.

Former South Carolina Chief Justice Endorses Obama
2007-11-02 20:01:00
South Carolina's first black Supreme Court justice since Reconstruction said Friday he's backing Barack Obama, a boost to the Democratic presidential candidate in this early voting state. Ernest Finney, a former state Supreme Court chief justice, told The Associated Press that the Illinois senator's views on education helped him make up his mind. ''I waited as long as I could,'' Finney, 76, said Friday, several hours before the two were to appear together. Finney planned to make his support official at a campaign event in Clarendon County. Obama planned to speak at the Clarendon County Courthouse, where families first sued the state over unequal education opportunities for blacks and whites in South Carolina in the 1940s. In South Carolina, blacks comprise about half of the primary electorate and the candidates have been seeking their support. Finney was a successful civil rights attorney before he became one of the state's first black lawmakers. He was elected to the S...

Chief Justice Roberts: Political Parties Are Like Trademarks
2007-10-03 05:08:00
The Associated Press yesterday reported on oral argument before the U.S. Supreme Court in a case that challenges Washington State’s primary system. Currently, voters here must pick a party and then vote for candidates within that party. A new law would replace that scheme, allowing voters to select their favorite candidates regardless of party affiliation. Litigation has prevented the law from taking effect. The AP stated that “Chief Justice John Roberts compared the case to a trademark dispute. The two major parties are trying to protect their ‘brand’ to ensure that only those who agree with the party’s principles are identified with that party, he said.“Under the law as approved, ‘people will be confused,’ Roberts said. Candidates might ‘look like Republicans but aren’t.’”That-’s an interesting take. To the extent voters look at Candidate X, see she’s a Democrat, and have an accurate p...

2007-08-02 04:10:00
I was not aware that there were specific medical criteria to be diagnosed with epilepsy, a very serious and life threatening illness. Two separate seizures are required.  Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts suffered his second seizure yesterday. His first seizure was in 1993. According to the New York Times:"Because the seizure was his second — he had a similar one in 1993 — he meets the criteria for epilepsy, and he and his doctors will have to decide whether he should take medication to prevent further seizures, said neurologists not involved in his care."Despite his quick recovery from the seizure he suffered on Monday, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. faces a complex diagnosis and a difficult medical decision. Can he continue to drive? Is he at risk for epileptic seizures while serving on the highest court in the United States?  These are difficult issues. The decision will involve weighing the risk of more seizures against the risk of side ...

Mr Nayyer Ali’s observations are quite accurate. Chief Justice of Pakistan Case: A Constitutional Deja Vu?
2007-07-14 06:29:00
Guest post by Athar Osama Adil Najam’s post on judicial assertiveness the other day sheds light on a very interesting - and important - aspect of the current judicial crisis in Pakistan. What are the limits of Judicial activism or - to use Adil’s words - assertiveness? This is not something new to the world - or even to Pakistan’s history. Every country that has attempted to establish rule of law and constitution has struggled with trying to find a balance between what can (and cannot) a judge do. In America, where constitutionalism is much more advanced than in Pakistan, the debate has moved to a higher plane in the famous tussle between those who believe in strictly interpretting the constitution and those that only appear to do so. Each side claims that it is interpretting the constitution (or interpretting the original intent of the framers) and accuses the other of legislating from the bench. (more…)
