Childhood obesity

Childhood obesity are we taking this problem seriously?
2008-06-06 14:05:00
Childhood obesity is either a major problem or is already under control according to which report you read according to a recent report in Scotland one in five boys and one in ten girls in Scotland are obese. But this is just the tip of the iceberg this same report also states that by 2020 the figure is anticipated to have increased to 50% or more which is likely to put a massive strain on health services in the future. Medical experts blame the sedentary and almost couch potato like existence of children today who get little exercise in the home environment and most only exercise at school.
Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity, a serious problem in the United States for the last 25 years, may have hit its peak. A report published in the May 28 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that the epidemic may have leveled off during the past eight years. Researchers say that the number of overweight children is still three times what it was back when I was a kid though (in the 1960s and 70s). This is interesting for a few reasons. It could mean that a certain percentage of the population of US children is simply immune to obesity. That’s one of my extremely non-scientific guesses, and was not suggested by any of the research. Researchers didn’t draw any conclusions from the data, but there will no doubt be much study. Is it possible that a segment of US citizens just eat right and exercise and teach their children to do the same? What are your thoughts?
Green Tea and Chocolate Milk Reduce Childhood Obesity

Giving children green tea and flavored milk to drink may reverse the childhood obesity epidemic, presenting a healthy alternative to soda and HFCS sweetened pseudo-juices. Obese and overweight Japanese children drinking high catechin green tea experienced significant improvements in waist circumference, blood pressure, and LDL cholesterol.  The researchers found that green tea was safe and beneficial for children. CHILDHOOD OBESITY STUDY HELPS YOUNGSTERS
2008-04-06 15:02:00
Children at an Exeter school are feeling happier and healthier after researchers working on a project to tackle childhood obesity helped them change the way they live.Instead of watching TV or playing video games and snacking on fizzy drinks or sweets, pupils at Whipton Barton now join in sports and eat fruit. The success of the project, by a team from the Peninsula Medical School, means it might be copied in hundreds of other schools across the UK.Researchers have spent two years working in schools in the city to develop resources for teachers to help convince children to be healthier. Children at Whipton Barton took part in rugby sessions with the Exeter Chiefs and drama and dancing sessions to help them understand the benefits of eating properly. Jenny Lloyd, in charge of the project, ran events for mums and dads to explain what the children were being taught. "We hope to get funding from the Government and the British Heart Foundation to go into more Exeter and Plymouth sc...

Rising Childhood Obesity and Vending Machines
2008-03-28 17:00:00
image by Joe 13 Childhood obesity trends are horrifying. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have noted that in the 70?s childhood obesity rates were less than 6% while studies done today are showing a trend upwards of around 20%. In other words, in a single classroom, instead of there being just one child picked on for being overweight, we now have two or three kids. When considering the fact that childhood obesity leads to serious health consequences, one starts to wonder why it is steadily increasing and what is being done to slow it down. While there are many factors affecting the obesity rates in the US, one huge area to be addressed are the school vending machines. In an educational and supposedly safe environment for children, it is difficult to understand why junk food or high calorie yet nutrient deficient foods are allowed into our schools. Some might argue freedom of choice, but for children who often cannot make the right choice; it is up to adults ...

But, it seems that many parents feel ‘guilty’ ...
Childhood obesity: things need to know

Do you know when to be concerned about your child's weight? Of course, all children gain weight as they grow older. But extra pounds ? more than what's needed to support their growth and development ? can lead to childhood obesity.Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start kids on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.Being an overweight and an obese teen in the past, Dr. Kal's understand clearly health problems of childhood obesity. He has written a post about overweight children. 'It's not just about eating well and exercising' Meagan Fitzpatrick, The Ottawa CitizenIs your neighbourhood making your child fat? A new study suggests that children growing up in Canada's poorest neighbourhoods are more likely to be considered overweight or obese than those raised in higher- and middle-income areas. "Obesity is very complex," Lisa Oliver, the study's main author, said in an interview. "It's not just about eating well and exercising, but how do the environments in which you live influence your ability to engage in physical activity or eating healthy?" The study suggests that in the fight to reduce childhood obesity, policies should target those environmental influences.   "Residing in a disadvantaged neighbourhood may promote weight gain through access to a less healthy food supply, limited access to recreation facilities and increased safety concerns," the study notes. It did not go in depth, however, ...
Bill addresses childhood obesity, fitness in schools
2008-02-16 11:09:00
SUSAN C. INGRAM Tenth District Delegate Shirley Nathan-Pulliam recently introduced a bill aimed at improving fitness for school-age children whose health may be compromised by obesity.A nurse by training and a health-care business owner, Nathan-Pulliam was motivated by the increase in childhood obesity to sponsor a bill encouraging more physical fitness programs in public schools. "What prompted it is the growing number of children with type 2 diabetes, with the sedentary lifestyles and diets," she said.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of overweight children age 6-11 more than doubled in the past 20 years from 7 percent in 1980 to almost 19 percent in 2004. For adolescents 12 to 19, the numbers shot up from 5 percent to 17.1 percent in the same time period.Sixty-one percent of those overweight children also have at least one heart disease risk factor, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, according to the CDC. They are more...
More Sleep, Less Childhood Obesity
2008-02-15 03:13:00
kimping on Sleep May Make Children More Likely to Become Overweight or Obese   By Miranda Hitti WebMD Medical News   Getting more sleep may help children avoid becoming overweight or obese. That's according to a new review of 17 studies on sleep and childhood obesity. The studies stretched from Europe to the U.S. to Asia. And around the world, the pattern was the same: Kids who didn't sleep enough were more likely to be overweight or obese. Reviewer Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, an associate professor in the Center for Human Nutrition at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health, offers these tips for parents: Remove the TV, computer, and video games from kids' bedrooms. "Therefore, children can have more time to sleep rather than be tempted to engage in these activities," Wang tells WebMD. Set earlier bedtimes for kids. Wang suggests reading to young kids to help them get to sleep earlier. Beat the morning rush by preparing the nigh...

Oprah Spotlights Childhood Obesity
2008-02-04 17:48:00
I am so upset that I forgot to Tivo today's episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show. It was about childhood obesity. I was an overweight child and an obese teen. I am also a huge Oprah fan, so I really wanted to see this episode.I didn't see the episode, but I read this article from CalorieLab. Based on this article, I have some strong feelings about today's guests.Allowing your child to undergo weight loss surgery is insane. Why can't parents simply take away their child's money and only keep healthy foods in the house. The thirteen year old and her parent(s) did not seem to learn anything. I'm all for eating anything you want in moderation. However, the fact that she refers to how much hamburger and the number of french fries her stomach can hold is disheartening.I agree with Dr. Farmer. It is rare that obesity is the cause of any significant morbidity or mortality in children. Weight loss surgery should be a last resort. At only 13 years old, I'm sure her parents have not tried ...

Causes of Childhood Obesity
2008-01-28 14:13:00
Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. Today over nine million children over the age of six are considered obese. Childhood obesity is caused by many different factors including environmental, social and genetic. This article will discuss each of these causes and what you can do as a parent to prevent obesity in your children. The environment in which your child lives could contribute to childhood obesity. Today many streets, towns and suburbs are designed to discourage walking and other physical activities. Only about 1 child out of every 5 in the US will participate in some form of extra-curricular physical activity outside of school. The slowing down of the US economy and the rise in gas prices is forcing families to cut expenses. One expense that more and more families are cutting back on is their grocery bill. They are purchasing more convenience foods that are high in fat and have very little nutritional value. These foods are usually easy to prepare...
Playground gets daily workout to curb childhood obesity
2008-01-14 05:02:00
Associated Press - January 13, 2008 1:15 PM ET WOODWARD, Okla. (AP) - A western Oklahoma community has become a pioneer in the use of a play system designed to keep children playing longer with more physical exertion to fight childhood obesity. City officials in Woodward considered data from Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy when they planned a $25 million makeover for Crystal Beach Park. The city decided to install the Evos-brand play system. City Manager Alan Riffel says the new playground offers a choose-your-own-adventure-type- play experience. ACS Playground Adventures owner Clint Pitzer says the Evos equipment builds more strength and increases agility - there's more climbing, traversing nets and webs, and it has gliders, which replaces the slide with a new concept that requires more balance.

Avoiding Childhood Obesity In Your Child
2008-01-02 14:44:00
America’s children are getting fatter and fatter, just go out in public and you’ll know what I mean. It can be a tense subject, but there is no denying that the size of America’s children has been steadily growing in recent years, and this trend has dangerous implications on these children’s health. When you consider how a child’s body works, you know that they have very fast metabolisms, burn a lot of energy, and generally have no problem maintaining a healthy weight. It takes some very bad habits for a child to become obese, yet this is growing more common as time goes on. The first step in solving this problem is recognizing who’s to blame. It’s not the children – they are never going to be concerned with their health, and don’t know any better. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child is being raised with healthy eating and exercising habits to reduce their risk of unnecessary illnesses in their lives. By ma...

Lifelong Effects of Childhood Obesity

Thursday, Dec. 06, 2007 By TIFFANY SHARPLES   Judah Passow / Getty   Doctor, firefighter, astronaut. These are the things kids want to be when they grow up. Obese 35-year-old with type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease? Not exactly. But according to two studies published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), that's where our children are headed, unless monumental ? and immediate ? changes are made in the effort to curb childhood obesity. "This is a public health problem, and public health problems require policies that actually reinforce positive choices," says Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo of the University of California, San Francisco, a principle author of one of the NEJM studies. "We know that healthy nutritious foods and physical activity are really the keys to preventing excessive weight gain in childhood. We need a concerted effort at the federal, state and local level ? across government and industry ? to ensure that...
???????Childhood obesity increases adulthood heart disease risk
2007-12-07 10:35:00
BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study found that obesity in childhood will substantially increase future risk of heart attack and other cardiac events, media reported Thursday.     The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the greater the increase in the children's weight, the higher their risk of suffering heart disease in their future life.     The study also said that the obesity ratio would increase by 5 to 12 percent for the boys who are overweight now and 2 to 12 percent for the girls by 2020 in the United States, which means more heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure at a younger age.     "I-f we don't take steps to reverse course, the children of each successive generation seem destined to be fatter and sicker than their parents," said David Ludwig of Children's Hospital Boston in a commentary in the New England Journal of Medicine.  &nbs...
Childhood Obesity
2007-12-07 01:22:00
It's no secret that Americans are getting fatter and fatter. Children are the newest victims and here is a news story that illustrates the way of things to come.Bariatric surgery has become a lot of hospitals new cash cow and it looks like there will be plenty of business in the years to come. It won't be long before they start adding pediatric bariatric programs. When I was a child a large Coke was 16 ounces. Now you can get one that is 48 ounces at McDonald's. Fries came in one size, what is now the small. There were no Whoppers, Double quarter pounders, just the regular hamburger and cheeseburger. Mom's didn't work so there was a home cooked meal on the table most nights. Now mom has to work and it's easy to pick up fast food on the way home. Portions are growing and growing. Children are suffering from obesity related problems like high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. I won't be surprised to see life expectancy rates start to fall. How sad is that?

New findings on childhood obesity
2007-09-27 17:35:00
New research has found that obese children are more likely to spend time watching television and have a mother who is overweight.   The finding came from Auckland researchers who tracked children from birth to seven years of age.   Nearly 600 children were part of the study, which looked at the factors causing childhood obesity.   The research reveals that obese 7-year-olds were also obese as preschoolers. Professor Ed Mitchell from the University of Auckland says that fat is being laid on very early on, and is not just puppy-fat that is going to disappear.   One significant factor found was the weight of the child's mother, although at this stage the importance is unclear.   The research found that mothers that were overweight were much more likely to have children that were as well.   Poor diet, genes and lack of exercise have all been attributed to childhood.

www.bestsyndication.comBy Mark BaroneA group of studies were reported in this week?s supplemental issue of the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. The journal compiled a number of studies that showed the different pressures that cause children and teenagers eat the wrong foods, and may be the reason for obesity epidemic.Researchers from the University of Michigan found that there were several factors that influence children into eating unhealthy food choices. One discovery is that most middle and high schools across the United States have contracts with the soft drink industry. The study reports 67 percent of the middle schools and 83 percent of the high schools will have soft drinks available for children to purchase. These kids have easy access to sugary drinks when they attend school. Why would the schools allow this? They do this for the extra income. The schools earn on average $6,000 per year or $6.48 per student at the high school level and $500 per year on average or ...
Is There A Way to Stop Childhood Obesity?
2007-09-25 15:17:00
Is there a way to stop or prevent childhood obesity? It's very discouraging to read about how our children are barraged with advertisements for junk food. They have limited opportunities for playing outside and for physical education. As a society, we are seeing what is happening to us all. I can't help but believe that television was the start of our downfall and that it has caused health to spiral downward ever since its growing appeal in the 1950s. People stopped playing outside as much and even in my lifetime, children's abilities to just get out and play have dropped 500%. I used to be able to ride my bike, away from home, for hours and hours every day. My children now never leave my sight.Am I being too overprotective, given the sensational headlines about kidnapping and sexual offenders? Have any of you read the novel, Little Children, and seen how the author Tom Perrotta works this in to great effect in the story of "typical" suburban family life? The characters, like most...
Elevated Blood Pressure In Youth Linked To Rise In Childhood Obesity
2007-09-11 17:39:00
Science Daily ? A Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) researcher is the lead author of a new study that finds that after decades of decline, blood pressure (HBP) levels in children and adolescents are increasing. "General obesity, called 'overweight' in childhood, increased over time in all racial and ethnic groups," said Rebecca Din-Dzietham, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., lead author of the study and associate professor of community health and preventive medicine at MSM in Atlanta, Ga. "The prevalence of childhood obesity drifted slightly and steadily higher after the 1963 survey and increased significantly during the 1976-1980 survey period with a sharp rise after that time." Din-Dzietham said that each one centimeter increase in waist circumference raised the likelihood of high blood pressure by 10 percent and the likelihood of pre-high blood pressure by five percent. The study is based on an analysis of national health surveys between 1963 and 2002 publish...

DEFEAT CHILDHOOD OBESITY
2007-07-10 09:23:00
In the last few years childhood obesity has shown to be an issue of critical and increasing importance. A little boy is considered obese if he exceeds his ideal weight by 25%; the threshold is set at 30% for little girls. A child’s ideal weight can be easily calculated on the base of BMI (body massive index). If you want to check your child’s weight you can visit the website: http://www.cdc.gov/ and write "BMI" in the search engine.Childhood obesity is frequently a consequence of an unbalanced nutrition, more and more based on fat and caloric food, lacking in proteins and nutritive value. Children often eat casually and prefer snacks and soft drinks. Parents tend to buy ready-to-eat products rather than cook themselves with natural ingredients. Purchase decisions in our consumer society are influenced by marketing and misleading advertising, which affect nutrition and deploy its biggest effects on youth. We lead an inactive life, too.
