Remains of two children found in Calvert County residence
2008-09-30 00:28:00 A Calvert County, Maryland woman told investigators in a child abuse case that the remains of two adopted girls were in a drop-in freezer in the basement of her home. Renee Bowman of Lusby, Md. was charged with child abuse in the beating of a third adopted daughter. According to a Calvert County sheriff's office press release, the investigation of Bowman was triggered after her seven year old adopted daughter escaped from a locked bedroom. Bowman subsequently confessed to beating the one adopted daughter and the storage of the other two children's remains for seven months since her move from Rockville. Any charges for the deaths of the other two children would likely come out of Montgomery County, notes the Washington Post. The freezer has been transported in whole to Baltimore for state forensic examination. The three children were adopted by Renee Bowman out of the District of Columbia. City officials have claimed that all proper procedures were followed but the Bowman tragedy i...

The Children of Low Wage Immigrants are Criminals
2008-09-25 03:41:00 Updated September 24:The male children, at least. This has been true at least in the past 150 years or so. We went through Hell for decades already with the Sicilians, the Irish and the Jews. After some time, they've all comfortably made it to middle class America and beyond. The Irish, Jewish and Sicilian ghettos of yore are nowhere to be found. We are seeing it again with Hispanic illegal immigrants from Mesoamerica and the Dominican Republic and with unscreened immigrants from US colonies in Puerto Rico and Western Samoa. The first generation of illegal or unscreened immigrants produces criminal children, which then produces a criminal culture. In some cases, it ends right there and the newer generations assimilate well. In other cases, as with the White ethnics above, you end up with decades of Underclass Hell before they finally climb aboard. In other cases, the criminal children of the first generation may produce a permanent Underclass. Look at the Gypsies in Europe. They've b...

Warm Biscuit Bedding Company Giveaway
2008-09-13 10:00:00 I met Vicki Mote Bodewell, founder of Warm Biscuit Bedding Company, at BlogHer last July but it wasn't until I started wandering around her website that I realized what a great online store she had.The story goes that her grandmother would say "It's time to crawl into your biscuit" when it was time for bed and that homey, comfortable, cozy metaphor is perfect for describing what Warm Biscuit Bedding Co. has going for it.There are of course lovely bedding products because you couldn't have a bedding company without them--the Paper Doll themed fabric and room decor is my favorite, it's just adorable--but it goes beyond that where they carry art supplies and kits, toys, jewelry, apparel and gobs more.I don't know if you're already thinking about holiday gifts but if I had a child on my list I would start with Warm Biscuit because there's got to be something there that a kid would love, the fairy castle pictured below is just what I would have wanted for Christmas 30 years ago. ...

Lana's Little Darlins Giveaway
2008-09-06 10:00:00 I don't know about you but I've never really outgrown having a favorite blanket. Mine is a green quilt that I keep at the foot of my bed for some extra protection against chilly Alaskan weather and each of my kids has a favorite flannel quilt of their own.Lana's Little Darlins has beautiful handmade blankets that are the kind that are sure to become a Favorite Blanket--the kind that gets dragged everywhere and loved to death. They're soft and comfy and some like the super soft pink minky have embossed stars and moons along with these beautiful ruffled edges. (My children used to absentmindedly play with the edges of their blankets as they sucked their fingers and drifted off to sleep at nap time so these blankets are making me rather nostalgic). Some of Lana Roerkohl's designs are in modern giant polka dots, some in nubby soft polka dots but they're all beautifully made and machine washable, ready for loving.Of course there are bibs, burbies and aprons as well, the store is ...

Children of older fathers more likely to have bipolar disorder
2008-09-01 18:45:00 Older age among fathers may be associated with an increased risk for bipolar disorder in their offspring, according to a report in the September issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Bipolar disorder is a common, severe mood disorder involving episodes of mania and depression, according to background information in the article. Other than a family history of psychotic disorders, few risk factors for the condition have been identified. Older paternal age has previously been associated with a higher risk of complex neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia and autism. Emma M. Frans, M.Med.Sc., of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues identified 13,428 patients in Swedish registers with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. For each one, they randomly selected from the registers five controls who were the same sex and born the same year but did not have bipolar disorder.
Get Ready for Kindergarten Giveaway
2008-08-30 10:00:00 Cedar Valley Publishing is a company started by Stacey Kannenburg, an educator, author, speaker and mom was looking for books and curriculum to prepare children for their educational careers. The result is Cedar Valley Publishing and the Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten series (which includes Let's Get Ready for First Grade) and the soon-to-be-released Spanish editions of both books. The books are a little different because they're in an easy-to-read storybook type format rather than a workbook where children can practice saying letters, numbers, identifying shapes and colors and other early learning skills. According to the website they've won multiple awards and are in use in 350 schools around the country. To quote Kannenburg:Thirty-eight states are discussing all day 4 year-old Kindergarten because kids are not coming to school prepared. But where are the public service announcements telling parents the 7 things they need to know for Kindergarten testing: the alphabet all ...

The King's Children, Ring Of The Interstellar Ark
2008-08-23 23:29:00 The Wild Swans & Princess Elisa from Interstellar Ark in description of the corolla of a vast ring?"? ?? ????"?Lughnasadh 23I am pleased to report the plot (from Wikipedia) of a fairy tale my friend Herbalpagan brought to my attention today called The Wild Swans, about twelve siblings - the holy (whole) witch, wise prophetess Princess Elisa (who foils the dastardly plan of an Evil Witch), and her eleven princely brothers (who foil the dastardly plan of an Evil Archbishop):In a faraway kingdom, there lives a King with his twelve children: eleven princes and one princess. One day, he decides to remarry. He marries a wicked Queen who is actually a witch. Out of spite, the queen turns her eleven stepsons into swans and forces them to fly away. They carry their fifteen year old sister Elisa to safety in a foreign land where she is out of harms way of her stepmother. Behavior Modification VS Medicating Hyper Children
2008-08-12 14:55:00 Today is Lily' s fifth day of Kindergarten. She is doing great at school. The first few days she wasn't really able to settle down enough to communicate with me. Now she is back to her old self. I wonder if kids with ADD or ADHD are always like that? I mean for days Lily couldn't settle down enough to listen or talk, I knew she was in there but I couldn't get a connection. Some of the things I did which seem to have helped Lily settle down: I put us on a schedule. I used only a soft patient voice, even though she was driving me crazy and I wanted with every fiber of my being to scream, "knock it off". I gave her a physical outlet for her extra energy, like going for a walk or wrestling with me. I also get her up for school about an hour before we need to leave for the bus, that gives her enough time in the morning for a lea surly breakfast and time to goof off and not be in a rush. Finally she started to come out of that hyper place and was our Lily again. I hope the sam...
