You have to check out Danwei's post, entitled, "It's not easy for a migrant worker in the legislature." I don't even want to tell you what it is about, because I see it being about so many things, some of which go well beyond China. You just will have to trust me that this is a must read. Beijing musical traditions
2008-08-31 12:24:00
Park Music Beijing provides many parks for people to escape the confines of their apartments and enjoy a more natural environment while socializing with family and friends. One of the many favourite past times in Beijing parks is to practise music. People can be found playing traditional musical instruments or singing their favourite songs in many of the parks. Amateur and professional musicians can also be heard around some of the famous historic landmarks like the Temple of Heaven. Jingshan Park is awash with mass choirs each Sunday, along with many smaller groups or individuals enjoying their time outdoors. New Hotels in Beijing
2008-08-31 12:23:00
Beijing Hotels Update Beijing continues to have a high rate of new hotels being developed in preparation not only for the Olympics but also for the ever increasing numbers of tourism and business travelers visiting the city. The massive expansion in the hotel industry is not just in five star hotels but includes three and four star hotels along with the slow to develop boutique hotels. Increasing numbers of hotels will continue to be built after the Olympics to cater for growing demands of travelers. Enticingly stylish boutique hotels can be found developing in some of Beijing?s ancient hutongs among the courtyard homes and busy street life that characterizes the hutongs. Other boutique hotels have been newly built and prove more popular with the Chinese market than hotels developed from poverty associated courtyard homes. New Five Star Hotels include: The Opposite House www.theoppositehouse.com Building 1#11 Sanlitun LuChaoyang DistrictBeijing 100027Tel:...

Lost in Beijing
2008-02-24 01:28:00
Lost in Beijing, is a controversial film made in 2006 by Chinese director Li Yu, which is now banned in China. The director and producer, Fang Li, have also been prohibited from film-making for two years. The movie, which is known as Apple in China, is the director's third feature after Fish and Elephant (2001), a lesbian romance story between a Beijing Zoo elephant keeper and a fashion designer and Dam Street (2005), a gritty social drama, set in a small town, and focusing on the relationship of a socially-ostracized woman and a 10-year-old boy.The plot of Lost in Beijing, as the title suggests, sees the main characters, none of them from the city, struggling to adapt to the new social and economic realities in the capital. The storyline of the sexually-explicit movie supposedly came to the director while she was working as a news anchor and involves the twisted relationships of a pair of contrasting husband and wife couples. Young, poor migrant couple Liu Pingguo, played by Fan Bi...

I got my first postal mail in China!Esther, my friend here sent me some curry powder by post. For the life of me, I don't know why I didn't pack the curry powders. I have turmeric, chili and coriander powders but not curry. The rest were ready mix sauces. She posted them on Monday afternoon. They should have arrived for us yesterday but when I walked down to check the box - nothing. This morning we got an early morning buzz by the postman - you've got mail!I had to give my address to her in characters and managed to do it via MSN Messenger by copying and pasting from my Chinese dictionary :) Thank goodness for computer and technology! We referred to the curry powder as 'precious commodity' and I was thankful that she was willing to share her stash with me! This coming weekend we are going to her campus where her 2 student friends from India and Sri Lanka are going to teach us to cook some authentic Indian dishes. It is also good to have friends. We are also hoping to go with them...

China Post
2007-04-07 09:49:00
????????Befitting the Middle Kingdom, China Post has a long history.According to its English-language site, archeological records argue that inscriptions dating from the Yin-Shang Dynasty (14th-11th centuries B.C.) point to the existence of ?communication activities? similar to postal delivery. In the Zhou Dynasty, there were two methods of communication: drum and fire and, second, postal delivery by carriage or on foot. For the second type, delivery was categorized into ?routine? and ?emergency.?The post office as we know it today however was formally set up during the Qing Dynasty.Going back a bit, the "Post Delivery Law" of the Qin Dynasty is believed to be the first attempt at unifying postal service. It had various functions: delivery of government documents and edicts; military instruction; and so on. In order to accomplish this, road construction became a priority.Modern EraWhen China was forced to open up to the world in 1840, as a result of the Opium War, there was of course...
