Chinese New Year 2009
2009-02-09 22:38:00
It was fortunate that the height of the Chinese New Year celebrations were not spoiled by the onslaught of snow that hit London later that same night. The air was bitterly cold and it began to snow in sporadic sessions here and there, but it was not enough to cripple the celebrations as yet. Gerard St in London's Chinatown was packed with revellers, all with cameras at the ready. I never felt so less out of place with my camera in hand and it was more a question of who didn't have their camera than who did. Here's a few pics of what went down that day:Dragon's Beard candy in the making. It can be likened in texture to Fairy Floss (Cotton Candy) or Pashmak, a confection that is traditionally made using honey and rock sugar. There were two of these stalls demonstrating how apparently easy it was to make the candy. A little rolling, a little rubbing, then some pulling and a little slight of hand and there you have yourself some Dragon's Beard candy. It was like a magic trick. They ...

An Important Chinese New Year Message
2009-01-26 22:08:00
Well, it's a new year, there's a new president, and I'm a new uncle. That's right, uncle, like all those Disney castratos. Michele's sister gave birth to a boy last week, making me an uncle, except we're not married so I don't know if that's an official title or like a gray area. Anyway, to go along with all this newness, I guess I owe a new post. Or at least a new-ish one. Tuesday I was at Harvard Vanguard Kenmore for most of the day. When I made the appointment in early December, they set up a blood test, and two ultrasounds; one for my heart and one for the abdomen. Hold on, quick question: What do you call a snowman body without a head? highlight for answer the abdominal snowman Sorry. I needed to fast for the abdominal one, so I made the appointment for 11:00 AM, then I could have lunch, and go to the cardio scan at 1:30. That way I get get it all done and out of the way in one day. Less to remember that way. It turns out that somehow, even that was too much to reme...

Chinese New Year/Imlek and Cap Go Meh 2559
2008-02-25 01:22:00
Since the year 2000 public celebrations of Chinese New Year in Indonesia have been legally permitted however in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, the mayor of the town issued a special decree, No 127/2008, forbidding any staging of barongsai and liong, or lion and dragon dance parades, to mark the New Year.Mayor Buchary Abdurrachman said any lion/dragon processions would cause traffic jams and might create social-ethnic conflicts among the people. We?re not telling people they can?t celebrate Chinese New Year, they can have lion/dragon displays but only in specified places [the Sultan Syarif Abdurrachman soccer stadium], not on the street/in kampungs. City authorities also instructed people to celebrate the New Year in a simple fashion.Related: Cap Go Meh in SingkawangIndonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Chinese New Year Traditions
2008-02-24 10:52:00
Chinese New Year Celebration is based on the start of the Lunar Year. As the year starts, there are a lot of activities Chinese practice to welcome the year with ,luck, fortune and prosperity. Back in China, there were a lot of temple fairs and fireworks during Chinese New Year’s Eve. Scheduled huge fireworks were anticipated especially in the central area of Beijing. We had our own celebration in a traditional Chinese restaurant called Hua Jia Yu Yuan. It was a feast literally as we devour ala carte orders that was a set for Chinese New Year. In Beijing, the streets are almost empty as a lot of people who came from different provinces went back to their home to celebrate this holiday. It was expensive to rent a van this time of year as they would not wait for you until the wee hours since the drivers will also celebrate with their families. Back in the Philippines, we celebrated Chinese New Year but not so much as Christmas or New Year. We had our usual tikoy (sticky ri...

Bye Bye Chinese New Year
2008-02-20 08:40:00
2 more days to go and CNY coming to an end. This year, CNY came and gone and I celebrated it in daze.  Seriously, I wasn’t aware how close it was when hubby asked me how many packs of ang pow he should prepare. Being a procrastinator as I always am, I was telling myself in the heart “why so early go prepare ang pow” and then without me realizing it, it’s already the eve. Many people would have keep track on the date, but I have lost count since baby’s arrival. All my energy and time has been focusing on the children. In order to welcome the festive, by right there are many things to do and prepare, but since I don’t celebrate at my own home, there’s actually nothing much to prepare. No need to bake cookie…just go back my in-laws house and grab from the hampers. No spring cleaning though hubby did ask the maid to take down the curtain to wash sometime back (isn’t that suppose to be my job to tell the maid what to do??? I forgot!...

We Care Charity Dinner @ Aljunied GRC (Eunos)
2008-02-19 17:12:00
Tuesday 19th February 2008 Attended We Care Charity Dinner @ Aljunied GRC (Eunos), Bliss Garden Restaurant, Singapore Expo at 7.30pm. The event was organised by Eunos Citizens' Consultative Committee. Of all the Chinese New Year Dinners, this one would rank the best in terms of food. The emcee for the event was an actress. "Alamak" Hui Ge also humoured the crowd with his impromptu Malay translation of the Chinese song "Xiao Wei". Mayor Zainul took almost the whole night to finish toasting everyone by stopping at every single table (more than 100). The finale was a group singing by the VIPs of the song "?????", a song which Mayor just sang one night ago at the Eunos Zone 3 RC Chinese New Year function.

Chinese New Year Dinners

17 February 2008Today the Istana was open to all Grassroots leaders for a Chinese New Year Garden Party in conjunction with Chinese New Year (of course). Faizah's Father gave us a ride to the Istana, since we both live in the same block.Traffic police lined the road leading to the Istana. We were fortunate to be allowed to drop off there since it's double-zigzagged yellow lined road. We came early as we had a RC dinner later in the evening. However, we were not allowed entry since our MPs wouldn't be here yet. Anyhow, we went to Plaza Singapura for a cup of Mocha Frappucino at Starbucks. We chatted for a while with most part talking about her life teaching in Bedok North Secondary School. When time came, we queued up at Istana for security clearance and then boarded the shuttle bus.A symphonic Chinese Orchestra was performing for the crowd. Chinese Calligraphic Society members were writing for free. Other cultural groups were offering their services as well. Food was laid buffet s...

A Lucky start to an Auspicious New Year
2008-02-11 17:07:00
Day 3 of Chinese New YearWent to pray at ??? (tuo ta yuan), a temple situated at Geylang. While waiting for my turn to pray to ??? for blessings, some droplets of red ink sprinkled upon me. 2 drops, each landed on my elbow, with an additional drop on my offerings. Apparently the priest, while stoking the brush in my direction, caused it to happen. The strange thing is no one got it, and when it was my turn to go to the front to listen to the chanting, no red ink either. Could this be good luck (Red = luck)? The fortune cookie that I ate at the temple revealed a message predicting good fortune in investing in blue-chip stocks this year. Cool!My Family later went to Loyang Tua Bek Gong Temple where upon entering, the staff handed to us free copies of newspapers, featuring but of course the sensationalised scandal of Edison Chen. After the prayers, visited Gordan house. Since everyone was playing BlackJack, I caved in to please them. Beginner's Luck is awesome. At my peak, my ROI was 1...

Chinese New Year with family
2008-02-11 08:15:00
Last night I went down to the in-laws home to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Aside from my 4 month old being handed off to people I didn't know, the night went fairly well lol. We ate a variety of Chinese food which included curry noodles, some form of crispy lo-mein type of noodle, a tofu and veggie platter, and a couple of other dishes. My mother-in-law is a vegetarian so there wasn't anything that contained meat...although I must admit..I was hoping for some Sweet N' Sour Chicken!Throughout the evening my son was handed traditional red envelopes commonly called "Red Pockets". The kid made out like a bandit with them! They are given out by adults who are friends and family to all of the children and are filled with cash (Normally ranging from $1 to $20 in each envelope). I'm going to be putting it away into his college fund. Over all the night was pleasant..and to top it off the weather has cooled off again! Yey! No more having to run the air conditioner in the winter!Gong Ha...

Chinese New Year At Jonker Walk
2008-02-10 10:03:00
Jonker Walk is the glittering jewel of the historical town of Malacca. You should go to Jonker Walk when you are visiting Malacca. Otherwise, it's just like leaving a jewelry shop with empty hands.Jonker Walk was decorated with numerous of lanterns during Chinese New Year. Visitors started flocking to Jong Walk when the sun began to set. The night of Jonker Walk bustled until the excited crowd left Jonker Walk at midnight. Before becoming a popular tourist attraction, Jonker Walk is a narrow street with a few antique shops. It's totally different now. Jonker Walk is a busy street during daytime. Tourists stroll along the pedestrian walkway in front of the shops. Jonker Walk turns into a bustling street at night from Friday to Sunday. Hopefully it would be seven nights a week in future. The stuffs that available at Jonker Walk range from local delicacy, souvenirs to antiques. If you are in Malacca, remember to witness yourself the night fever of Jonker Walk.

Lunar Chinese New Year 2008
2008-02-09 09:59:00
Chinese New Year Eve saw some packing of the house. Reunion dinner was as per normal. I was quite sick of the steamboat for it happened more than just once each year, and every time I had to feast on it for numerous continuous days.My plan to comb down the pasar malam at Chinatown for cheap goodies was killed once again. It was quite stupid to go down early and thus I did not join my family members earlier. I went down at 3am but unfortunately, met them at the junction. Both my brothers wanted to go home but my mum decided to tag on to me.I did not have much time and I would not want to waste any. I just wanted to speed up in all the crowded alleys and get whatever was cheap, in the shortest time. My pace was usually swift and far beyond your imagination, but this time, I knew I was grounded. I gave up on everything. Other than my preparation being trampled, I had to endure on the wastage of time and boring journey.Basically, I allowed my mum to lead the way and she was basically fa...
