Chipper Jones out of lineup (AP)
2008-06-11 01:29:00
Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones, leading the major leagues in hitting at .420, was out of the lineup for a second straight game Tuesday because of a small tear in his right quadriceps. The Braves opened a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. “I’m hoping maybe (to) be back in there tomorrow,” ...
Berkman, Chipper Jones making historic runs
2008-06-10 15:06:00
Many have tried, few have come close, but nobody has done it since 1941. The Braves' Chipper Jones is the latest slugger to flirt with a .400 batting average. The last players to make a serious run at Ted Williams were Rockies first baseman Todd Helton and then Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra in 2000. Both finished the season at .372.In 58 games with 219 at-bats this season, Jones, who batted a career-high .337 last season, is sitting at .420. But he's not too optimistic about his chances. "I don't think I'll do it," Jones told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "It possibly could be done, because I've seen Ichiro (Suzuki) get 260 hits in a season. He is a guy who is going to leg out 50, 60, 70 hits a year. Those are hits I won't get."Jones hit .417 in May, but Houston's Lance Berkman actually topped that with an astounding .471 average last month.Berkman will have to keep besting Jones in that category if he wants to make his own run at history.  His .372 average, second to...

Chipper Jones Prefers To Remain With Braves
2008-06-06 16:39:00
David O'Brien is reporting that Chipper Jones would like to play at least four more years and that he would prefer to spend those years in a Braves uniform."I don't think there's any reason I can't play through 40," he said, "long as I don't let my body go, which is not going to happen. I'm too active year-round to let my body go. "My desire to stick around and play four, five, six more years is strong. I want to accomplish some things here, put up some numbers here as long as the Braves want me."The Braves have an option that would pay Jones $8-11MM in '09 depending on performance, although it is expected that the number would be closer to $11MM. O'Brien believes that if Jones is healthy, he will command far more on the open market after the '09 season, and wonders if a team like the Rangers or the Astros (Jones lives in Texas in the off-season) might pursue Jones with a huge contract offer. However, Jones emphasized that he is not interested in the biggest deal and would ...
Braves slugger Chipper Jones hits 400th homer (AP)
2008-06-06 05:11:00
A threat to hit 400? Chipper Jones is already there. The Atlanta Braves slugger hit his 400th career home run Thursday night and got four hits against the Florida Marlins, raising his major league-leading batting average to .418. Jones singled in the first and third innings before crushing his homer about 10 rows deep into ...
Can Chipper Jones hit .400 this year?
2008-05-30 02:41:00
Well we've been so busy with summer, the NBA Conference Finals, and the Stanley Cup Finals that we haven't been going a lot of MLB posting. So here's something for you!So when do we start the Chipper .400 Watch? The Sports Flow is starting now and so should you! Only three times in the past 50 years has any hitter had as high a batting average as Chipper has now (.418), Rod Carew (1983), Rico Carty (1974) and Hank Aaron (1959). So why not start the speculation?I realize it's been 67 years and counting since Ted Williams hit .400. And it's 28 years since George Brett even became the last man to carry a .400 average into September. But why not Chipper? He's a switch-hitter who's batting .409 left-handed and .431 right-handed. He hit .422 in April. He's stayed hot in May hitting .429. And over the past year, he has had only one month when he's hit lower than .364. This leads me to believe this is no fluke. In fact, if you look back over that year, Chipper batted .376 (with a ....

Chipper Jones Hitting .425?
2008-05-05 15:45:00
The argument for a Hall of Fame bid only gets louder for Braves legend Chipper Jones. Even in a season beset by physical ailments, Chipper Jones appears to be the best player on earth. His average is now at .425, after blasting his 9th homerun and driving home 5 RBI, which now accounts for 27 on the season. Through 113 at bats into the season, it appears that Chipper Jones may challenge Ted Williams...

Chipper Jones’ season is going so well he fulfilled both of his birthday wishes. Fantasy Baseball Weekly Wrap & Awards
2008-04-23 21:04:00
Bat Of The Week: Chipper Jones - .565, 6 R, 2 2B, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 1.773 OPSChipper had a monster week, making only 10 outs on the way to hitting 4 homers, driving in 7 and putting up an OPS over 1.700. Buster Olney thinks that Chipper?s approach at the plate right now is the best it has ever been. I think I would have to agree. Jones? injury history certainly has to scare fantasy owners as naturally none of this means anything he isn?t on the field. Given the gaudy numbers he has put up over the past 3 years (in remarkably quiet fashion) he is simply a risk worth taking at this point. As far as availability I'm guessing he isn't available in most leagues (depending on how deep you league is). If you have him don't trade him away right now. If he cools down substantially or gets a little banged up you could get some worth for him but as for right now definitely keep on riding this.Arm Of The Week: John Danks ? 2 GS, 2-0, 14.2 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 12 KDanks pitched 2 shutouts this wee...

Chipper Jones will try to play Monday
2008-04-21 17:36:00
An otherwise perfect weekend for the Atlanta Braves was dampened only by major-league hitting leader Chipper Jones' early exit from Sunday's game.He doesn't expect his sore right quadriceps to keep him out of the lineup long according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution."I'm going to try to [play] Monday," said the third baseman, who went 2-for-3 and left the game shortly after his fifth-inning double. "But if I wake up sore and it's sore just standing around, how's it going to be playing?"Jones, hitting .458 with six homers and 18 RBIs in 18 games, strained his quad just over a week ago on a cold night at Colorado. It flared again last weekend in Washington, but he said Sunday was the worst its felt since Colorado. He woke with tightness in the muscle and couldn't get it to loosen Sunday.

Chipper Jones irritated his strained right quadriceps while running out a double and left the Atlanta Braves’ game against Los Angeles on Sunday. Chipper Jones Already Injured
2008-03-05 05:54:00
When healthy, Chipper Jones is one of the best players in the game. The problem is that he is rarely healthy. Jones is a future Hall of Famer who is turning 36 this season. When healthy, Jones can still play as well as anyone. In fact, last season he put up MVP-type numbers: .337 average, 29 homeruns, 102 RBIs, 108 runs, and 5 SB. Most remarkably, Jones did this while missing 28 games (nearly...

Judging from some of the talk coming out of the New York and Philadelphia camps, the NL East must be a two-team race. Not so, said Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, who shrugged off the back-and-forth banter between the last two division champions. “I really don’t care what’s being said,” he said. A Sore Losing Clinic
2007-11-11 22:56:00
Chipper Jones may not flub too many grounders during the season, but off the field, he makes plenty of errors:According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chipper Jones is a bit baffled by David Wright winning the NL Gold Glove. "When I find out [Wright won] I was speechless, for quite some time," Jones said. "Certainly the guys with the least amount of errors and best fielding percentage quite obviously didn't win it."Fortunately, Gold Glove Awards aren't necessarily handed out to the guys with the least amount of errors and the highest fielding percentage. Well, OK, pretty frequently they are, but they shouldn't be; we have far more telling defensive stats at our disposal. Jones did have fewer errors and a higher FP than Wright, but he also had a .662 RZR, compared to Wright's .689, and he finished at 1 FRAA, compared to Wright's 5 FRAA. I'm not saying Wright was the best choice; Pedro Feliz, Scott Rolen, Ryan Zimmerman, and Aramis Ramirez all probably had better claims t...
